11:17 – Interview with Folkicide

13. Folkicide – “Empire of The Ants”
from: Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film / August 15, 2011

[Folkicide plays Czar Sat. Feb. 9 with Ari Lehman the original Jason Voorhees.]

[Folkicide plays Davey’s Uptown, 3402 Main St., Wed. February 13, in an acoustic set, with Rabbit Killer and Major Matt Mason USA.]

“Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film” was the 3rd full length release from KC based singer-songwriter, Folkicide, who has described his music as “despair-core” and writes that his vision of constructive pessimism, he hopes in time, will be recognized as a new acoustical genre, fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Since 2010 Folkicide has released 4 full-length recordings and one EP, writing and arranging and recording over 60 tracks. Folkicide is also a visual artist. His works are currently on display at The Midwestern Musical Co. in the Crossroads. Folkicide plays Czar Sat. Feb. 9 with Ari Lehman the original Jason Voorhees. Folkicide also plays Davey’s Uptown, 3402 Main St. Wed. Feb 13, in an acoustic set, with Rabbit Killer and Major Matt Mason USA

Folkicide translated is death of folk? Folkicide explained his transition from Punk and Rock and Roll to his solo work playing non-electric. The sounds of the acoustic guitar, the expression.

Folkicide would appear to be KC’s own Nihilist anti-hero, truly rejecting all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.

“Empire of The Ants” is one of Folkicide’s songs from a few years ago, that he is adding drums for a future Mikal Shapiro video involving the song.

The titles of Folkicide’s recordings reflect the darkness of his songs and lyrics: Let’s Worship Degenerates, Ultimate Decimation Blues, Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film, The Genocide is Mean.

Last year Folkicide released “The Genocide is Mean” EP in July 1, 2012. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith at his magical tractor shed in Perry, KS.

After four years of tinkering with the idea, Folkicide’s NATO was finally recorded during April through August 2012 by Jonathan Brokow (the Anti-Roy Thomas Baker) mostly in the Folkicide basement via 4 track cassette.

It was engineered and mastered mid-August by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studio.

All songs were originally composed by the various Queen members and then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony intended because he truly loves Queen (well, pre-Hot Space Queen anyway) and NATO in particular.

Even though the songs were written by Queen, the lyrics, especially Bohemian Rhapsody seems perfect for Folkicide’s “pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization.”

Folkicide discussed the challenges of covering an entire record.

11:28

14. Folkicide – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
from: Folkicide’s A Night At The Opera / Independent / September 29, 2012

11:31

Art, the album covers, band posters, Folkicide has works on display at Midwestern Musical Co. in a show titled “Cut and Paste Manifesto” featuring the works of R. Ducan Burnett, Folkicide, Stan Morgan, and William L. Philyaw.

Kansas City native Deanna Hurst, performed in The Rocky Horrow Show at The Unicorn and Forbidden Broadway for Theatre League before moving to Los Angeles in 1990 where she who has worked as a professional actor, singer, and voice over artist. In 2011 Deanna formed the band Wildwood Highway with her friends Periel, and Bradford Lee Stanfield. In 2012 they recorded their self titled debut EP in Nashville.

Deanna Hurst co-wrote the song “Leap of Faith” with Roz Esposito, Deanna talked about the inspiration for the song.

Even though Kansas City is Deanna’s hometown, she worked professionally in Los Angeles and Dallas in the 1980s, and after returning to Kansas City to be on stage in productions at the American Heartland Theatre, The Unicorn, and Theatre League she traveled with the Forbidden Broadway show to Arizona and then permanently moved to LA in the 1990.

Deanna described Her early years in LA working at Aspen Optical, as “living a Bohemian lifestyle.” She worked for several years with The Circle X Theatre Company, (the LA home of our playwriting friend Jeff Goode.)

Deanna worked at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and the Northcoast Repertory Theatre.

Along with theatre Deanna has worked as a vocalist, singer, and voice-over artist, for commercials on radio and television. Deanna has also done several books on tape, including books by Ann Coulter, Teri Hatcher.

Deanna talked about how she ended up getting the same voice over agent as that of the late great “Voice of God” – Don LaFontaine who passed away in 2008, and was an American voice actor famous for recording more than 5,000 film trailers and hundreds of thousands of television advertisements, network promotions, and video game trailers.

Deanna talked about her work in a car commercial that will be air during this weekend’s big Super Bowl broadcast on CBS Television.

Throughout all of this Deanna also got married and became a step-mom.

Deanna met her good friend Periel in the early 1990s at Genghis Cohen, an asian restaurant and bar and one of LA’s hip musical venues.

Deanna met Bradford Lee Stanfield at The Alley several years later.

The three singers helped each other out as solo artists, and in 2011 they decided to form a band.

The band is unique because there are three lead singers, three separate, songwriters, who take turns singing lead vocals.

Bradford Lee Stanfield produced the new recordings for Wildwood Highway. The songs were recorded in Nashville.

The songs were mixed back in LA, it was there that Bill Payne of the famous band, Little Feat, brought his hammond B3 and Piano skills to your songs.

The band is working on releasing a full length recording this year.

2. David Bowie – “Where Are We Now?”
from: The Next Day / ISO – Columbia / Expected March 12, 2013
[We were all surprised to hear the single Bowie released on his birthday, Jan. 8. His 1st new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborating w/ longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination thru civil disobedience and non-violent means.

Quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

A lie cannot live.

A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.

Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.

At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love.

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.

Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the promised land! I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land.

It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.

That old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.

The Negro needs the white man to free him from his fears. The white man needs the Negro to free him from his guilt.

Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows.

We have guided missiles and misguided men.

When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.
