In our first hour, Mark Titus returned to Wednesday MidDay Medley for part two of his Guest DJ Special! Last May, Mark joined us to share music from the Pembroke Hill Glee Club from 1968, music from DMZ, the Boston based punk band, and music from the KC Chorale in Kirkwood Hall. Mark Titus joined us to share stories for his journeys, and musical performances from the past 25 years.

Mark Titus has been involved in the video industry for more than 20 years. What started as videotaping family events led to the creation of Titus Video in 1985. Gradually Mark has expanded his focus to include performance art archiving, training videos, coach and highlight DVDs for high school, college, and professional sports. [We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our April 25 show. Since then they’ve added Stephanie Williams on Drums, and Travis Earndshaw on Bass. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.” Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: that her vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.” Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. An array of floaty textures and chanty vocal harmonies combine with a set of elctronic inspired tribal percussion, to create a synth driven psychadelic soudscape written with pop sensability. Their debut LP ‘In Limbo’ (set for release Aug 28 on Carpark Records) was mixed/produced by Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3), and recorded in Teeny’s childhood friend/former bandmate Maia Ibar’s family barn in rural Connecticut.]

The KC acoustic indie rock trio, Clover Noir are the second band we’ve presented this year that was formed with the help of Craigslist. Ben who writes the bands songs decided to post an ad for collaborating musicians on Craiglist where he met Shylette who brought her improvisational violin playing to compliment Ben’s tunes. With Ben’s encouragement, Shylette brought in a Natasha and the trio was formed. Clover Noir join us to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios. Fresh from their KC Fringe Theatre performances the band is currently getting ready to release their debut full length recording. Clover Noir includes: Ben Rekittke on guitar and lead vocal; Shylette Carson on violin and backup vocals; and Natasha Derakhshanian on violin and backup vocals.

Natasha is also are involved with the Kansas City Kansas Community Orchestra a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization where this year, she was elected President of their Board of Directors. Natasha discussed the orchestra and the new scholarship/mentoring program she has created that will give instruments to students who actively participate in the orchestra. [Grand Island, Nebraska, singer/songwriter, first started playing guitar at 13. He is a self-taught musician who was influenced by bands like Skid Row, Ratt, Guns N’ Roses, and guitarist Steve Vai. Working like a lone wolf in Nebraska, Nick doesn’t play in a band, and in the recording process he creates all of the sounds by himself.]

On Monday, August 27, we lost a good friend, and writer, Tom Ryan, who reached out to so many of us through his kind and thoughtful words, and keen observations. Tom was one of those special people who took the time to connect with so many and offer collaboration and guidance. A veteran of the US Military, Tom lived all over the United States and all over the world, including: Australia, Japan, Nigeria, Ireland.

In Kansas City Tom was the creator o Words For Art, where he wrote about artists and art. Tom also wrote two other blogs, he was working on a play, he was a poet, essayist, he wrote screenplays, columns, and stories. Tom was full of ideas and through the last three years, he identified with so many with his amazing brain and sensitive demeanor.

We closed the show with a new song that musician Jason Beers was saving for his new banjo CD. Jason wrote that it was, “Kind of a dream to have Tom Ryan and Betse Ellis record with me.”

We also played a track from Elaine McMilian’s 2011 release, “The Messenger” which includes a song she co-wrote with Tom Ryan called “Lullaby (For Girls).”

Tom always took the time to connect, and we feel his absence, and we will give extra love and attention to our dear friend Elaine McMilian, who we hold in our hearts at this difficult time. Love and peace to you all.

7. Thom Hoskins – “Still Feeling Bronze”

Thom Hoskins has been a fixture in the Kansas City music scene for 10 years. He is the former lead singer and guitarist for The Buffalo Saints and Black Pool Lights. As a solo artist Thom played Ink’s Middle of The Map Fest in April and this year he released his new EP, “Still Feeling Bronze.” Thom joined us to talk about his music and perform LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Thom Hoskins started playing & writing music with his brothers, when he was 13. Piano, organ, guitar, bass, drums were some of the first instruments Hoskins picked up.

In 2005 the band Buffalo Saints in which Hoskins was the primary singer and songwriter released their first and only record the (Walking the dead E.P.) It took over a year to record and release, after a short tour and no label the band decided to go their separate ways.

Thom met Chris Tolle of The Belles. Both songwriters were reciprocal in helping the other perform and at one time both musician’s were a member of the other’s band.

After having met Chris, Hoskins was introduced to Jim Suptic guitarist of The Get Up Kids. The Get Up Kids had just broken up and Suptic’s new band Blackpool Lights were without a lead guitar player and were looking to tour on there new record. Hoskins obliged.

After a summer of touring with Blackpool Lights Hoskins called it quits wanting to focus on his own music career.

After losing his father no more than a couple of years before joining Blackpool lights and meeting his future wife in addition to having two children Hoskins has been through some major life changes, which could be felt by listening to his new release, “Still Feeling Bronze.”

Hoskins is due to release another record this year, a split E.P. with songwriter Doby Watson.

This 6-piece Lawrence based band includes: Austen Malone, Noah Compo, Wayne Zimmerman, Josh Landau, Brook Partain, and Danny Bowersox. The band was formed in 2010 in Lawrence? “Mother Mountain” is the band’s self-released 5-song [EP] and was part of our 111 Best Recordings of 2011, The EP received critical acclaim.

Fullbloods is a rock and roll band pulling inspiration from all corners and time periods of the genre. The band consists of four trained audio engineers who pay respect to conventional rock and roll and aren’t afraid to beg borrow or steal, consulting a smattering of western and surf music along the way.

EVERYDAY/EVERYNIGHT8:00 – 8:30

Everyday/Everynight introduced themselves in the fall of 2009 with a lush, introspective debut record, Moon Phases, and have since continued to turn out mentally and emotionally stimulating indie rock. As the name implies, Everyday/Everynight explore a cycle of human existence; moments of wonder balanced by fits of chaos… From glowing anthems to raging art-punk the sound is nothing short of striking.

COWBOY INDIAN BEAR – 8:45 – 9:15

Members CJ Calhoun, Beau Bruns and Marty Hillard have opened for Peter Bjorn and John, The Appleseed Cast, Murder by Death, and The Republic Tigers. After signing to Kansas City label The Record Machine in early 2010, the band released their full-length debut album “Each Other All The Time.”

THE EMPTY SPACES – 9:30 – 10:00

Formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album by the same name The Empty Spaces have been interpreting Shoare’s song writing since early 2010. Eventually the three piece began to collaborate more with song arrangements and stylistic choices yielding a kind of “retro-punk rock” that is fronted with an energetic, yelping vocal style.

SOFT REEDS – 10:15 – 11:00

Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks’ The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the ’77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, while embracing the richness of American indie rock. Originally started in 2007 as Grimes’ post-TGR solo project, Soft Reeds became a full band in 2009, and released the critically acclaimed ‘Soft Reeds are Bastards’ in 2010.

David Luby, is the Founder and Artistic Director or Gorilla Theatre, he joins us today to talk about Gorilla Theatre’s 21st annual Greek Show, “The Suppliant Maidens by Aeschylus,” to be performed on the South steps of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, this Saturday and Sunday, June 30th and July 1st, at 7:30 AM.

“The Suppliant Maidens by Aeschylus” this play is hardly ever produced outside of a rare academic production, this is the last of Aeschylus plays to be produced by Gorilla Theatre.

The two of you have been making music together for a long time.

One of the area’s longest-running and best-attended community film events, the Kansas City Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, is expanding to seven days for its 13th Annual showcase, June 21-28, being presented at Tivoli Cinemas, in Westport. Brent Husher, is Project Development Coordinator for the festival, and Jamie Rich, is Festival Director, joined us to discuss this year’s festival.

This year’s festival features over twenty-five new and emergent films will be featured including the heartland premiere of the biography of legendary civil rights activist Vito Russo (author of THE CELLULOID CLOSET), a fresh take on the screen classic HAROLD & MAUDE with a gay twist, and a road-trip comedy starring Oscar® winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker.

Two KC raised filmmakers return this year to present their latest projects. Lexington, MO native Nick Corporon is back to share his 2011 love story, EMPIRE, and offer a hometown preview of his latest short, BARBIE BOY. He’ll join Jackson Country raised Steven Tylor O’Connor who will present his just-completed comedy, WELCOME TO NEW YORK, in the LOCAL HEROES showcase on Monday, June 25.

• A record six films the 2012 were funded via KickStarter.com including this year’s Directors Showcase honoree ELLIOT LOVES. The film’s Latino director, Terracino, will be in attendance to introduce his film and be honored at the festival’s KickStarter reception before the screening.

• The national AIDS Story Project film, STILL AROUND will have its Midwest premiere on Wednesday, June 27. This cinematic survivors quilt is co-presented by the Good Samaritan Project, the KC Free Health Clinic, Hope Care Center and SAVE, Inc

• To uncover even more past and presents stories from the community, the newly-formed Gay & Lesbian Archives of Mid-America ( a joint initiative of the Kansas City Museum and UMKC) will be welcoming public donations of artifacts and documents to become part of the archives. Items can be brought to the Tivoli throughout the festival.

This year, the KCGayFilmFest is also marking the launch of its OUT HERE NOW Short Film Project which will produce and distribute films gathered from the LGBT stories of Kansas City. Kip Niven recently appeared in the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s production of August: Osage County. He has appeared on Broadway, Off Broadway, in regional theatres,, features films, network television and comercials. In Kansas City he has appeared at Starlight Theatre, New Theatre Restaurant, The Coterie Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, Musical Theatre Heritage, and Kansas City Actor’s Theatre. Kip is projext coordinator for EARTh, Equity Actors Readers Theatre, and serves as vice president of Equity’s Kansas City Area Liasion Committee. Kip Niven plays Henry in Spinning Tree Theatre’s new production of “The Fantasticks.”

Julie Shaw is know for brinbging down the house in musical numbers performed at The Quality Hill Playhouse. She has worked on stage in productions at The Unicorn Theatre, Chestnut Fine Arts Center, Musical Theatre Heritage, The Coterie and The Folly. This summer Julie will star in The Coterie Theatre’s production of “Once Upon A Mattress.” Julie Shaw plays Hucklebee in Spinning Tree Theatre’s new production of “The Fantasticks” running May 10 thru 27, Thursdays, Friday, Saturdays at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM, at Crown Center Off Center Theatre (Level 3) 2450 Grand Blvd. KCMO. The Fantasticks premiered at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, a small off-Broadway theatre in New York City’s Greenwich Village, on May 3, 1960. The production closed on January 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. It is the world’s longest-running musical and the longest-running uninterrupted show of any kind in the United States. Does it feel like theatrical royalty being part of this little show. 42 years is a long run, to what do you credit to the long life of this show?

With music by Harvey Schmidt, lyrics by Tom Jones, The Spinning Tree Theatre’s production features Jakob Wozniak as the pianist and Associate Musical Director, Peggy Friesen on Harp, w/ Krista Lang Blackwood as Musical Director, Resident M.D. of Spinning Tree Theatre. Most know the song, “Try To Remember.”

The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play “The Romancers” (“Les Romanesques”) by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud and erecting a wall between their houses. The fathers then hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, settling the supposed feud and securing their fathers’ blessings (which the young lovers have really had all along). When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity.
Elements of the play are also drawn from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

Wednesday MidDay Medley participated in 90.1 FM’s biggest band auction ever, with more than 100 area bands. Listeners can called to place bids. The highest bidder at the end of each segment received a 2-hour concert for their upcoming birthday, anniversary, block party, Quinceanera, company picnic, or bar mitzvah. The band auction supports 90.1 FM.

[4th full-length studio album from Sunderland, England band, recorded in their newly-built studio. The band’s core consists of brothers David & Peter Brewis, who played drums for fellow Sunderland band The Futureheads. Plumb was released on plum-colored vinyl. David Brewis told DIY magazine, “I love the fact that the English language has so many homophones. I think it’s one of those unique things about the language which really informs the English sense of humor. It tickles me that we can colour all of the album text and the vinyl plum.” The album’s cover art is a collage assembled by Peter Brewis and based on the painting “Standard Station” by American pop artist Ed Ruscha, a print of which hung in Peter’s bathroom.]

Beautiful Bodies have been compared to Blondie, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Runaways. Fronted by the playful and charismatic Alicia Solombrino on Lead Vocals; with Thomas Becker on Guitar & Back-up Vocals; Luis Arana on Bass; Aaron Crawford on Drums, Beautiful Bodies have been playing live since 2005 and have shared the stage with Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Chemical Romance, Cake.

Beautiful Bodies play Beaumont Club, March 12, at 7:00 PM in an all ages show, with Company of Thieves.

The band takes its name from one of Solombrino’s favorite books, the Beautiful Bodies by Laura Cunningham.

Alicia Solombrino was born and raised here in Kansas City and she explained the moment when she knew that she wanted to be a musician. It was when she was in kindergarten. “I saw Madonna on the (1990) MTV (Video Music) Awards performing Vogue,” she said.

Along with being Lead singer, Alicia is also known as a videographer, director, photographer, promotions manager, and web designer, she has been able to put her talents to use in many different ways and with many different venues. Alicia has created videos with many bands including The Republic Tigers and Alacartoona.

Guitarist Thomas Becker, is a Harvard Law graduate. (in Miami, representing victims of a Bolivian massacre in a civil lawsuit against the country’s former president.)

Beautiful Bodies have been playing and touring since 2005, sharing the stage with bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Chemical Romance, Cake. Har Mar Superstar, Shny Toy Guns, and others.

Beautiful Bodies released the single “You’re A Risk” Oct. 12, 2010?

Over the past few years the band has been writing new songs and now have the opportunity to record these songs with multi-platinum selling producer John Feldmann who has worked with The Used, Panic at the Disco, Good Charlotte, Neon Trees and Hilary Duff. How did you all meet up with John Feldman?

The band will be traveling to Los Angeles and recording for about a month. And have started a Kickstarter grant to help complete the recording of their new record. This past Saturday, February 25, Beautiful Bodies were in concert for their Album Kickstarter Party at the Riot Room, with Mute the Idol, Bears & Company, Last Nights Vice. Beautiful Bodies are one of 26 area bands chosen to represent KC at the MidCoast Takeover at SXSW. This is their third year participating in the MidCoast takeover in Austin.

Sneaky Creeps were originally formed by Artists: Max Crutcher, Andy Davis, Andy Erdrich who all met while going to KCAI. Andy Davis moved away, making the Sneaky Creeps a duo of Max Crutcher on Drums and Yell/Talk, and Andrew Erdrich on Guitar and Yell/Talk.

Max Crutcher moved to KC from Tulsa, Oklamoma.

Andrew Erdrich you and Sean Starowitz, both recent graduates of The Kansas City Art Institute, founded: BREAD! KC, an art project conceived in 2010 that creates funding for local artists by hosting a dinner, where for a $10 donation, diners are served a bowl of fresh soup, fresh baked bread, and a ballot. Three different creative projects are presented, and diners vote for one to receive the money collected from the evening. In under a year, BREAD! KC has awarded many thousands in micro-grants to area writers, gardeners, bands and artists.

Andrew Erdrich, besides playing with Sneaky Creeps, organizing and conducting Bread KC events each month, also works as the pressman at Vahalla Studios.

Andrew Erdrich is part of the Urban Culture Project.
