[Claire Cottrill was born August 18, 1998. She is known professionally as Clairo, and is from Carlisle, Massachusetts. Her fame escalated after releasing “Pretty Girl” in 2017, a lo-fi-produced song that attracted over 35 million views on YouTube. She credited her sudden popularity to the website’s algorithm system. Claire was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of marketing executive Geoff Cottrill. According to her, “Pretty Girl” was inspired by 1980s pop music, and that although she was tagged with the “bedroom pop” label, it was not her intention to make that style of music. After the popularity of “Pretty Girl”, Clairo signed a record contract with Fader. Clairo’s father, Geoff Cottrill, formerly held top positions at Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Converse, and MusiCares a philanthropic organization associated with the Grammy Awards. Between 2015 and 2017, he was president of American operations at MullenLowe Lintas Group. Claire began recording covers at the age of 13 and taught herself guitar from Internet tutorials. During this time, MTV contacted her to record a song to be used as background music for one of their shows, but the song was never used. Under the names Clairo and DJ Baby Benz, she began posting music to Bandcamp while in high school before beginning to post covers and songs in addition to DJ mixes of rap music on SoundCloud. She also maintained a YouTube channel where she would post covers and short films. In 2017, she began attending Syracuse University. Clairo’s “Pretty Girl” was recorded for an indie rock compilation benefiting the Transgender Law Center. According to her, she recorded the track “using the resources around me which were pretty shitty. I used like a little keyboard that I had and I was really into ’80s pop music — my mom is obsessed with it — so it kind of inspired me to do something like that.” The video also became popular on vaporwave-centric Facebook groups. Another video that was uploaded to YouTube a month earlier, “Flamin Hot Cheetos”, garnered 3 million views by July 2018. The success of “Pretty Girl” led to interest from major labels such as Capitol, RCA, and Columbia. Clairo signed a 12-song record contract with Fader Label. According to The New York Times, this was made possible by her father’s connection to Jon Cohen, co-founder of The Fader and an executive at the publication’s marketing agency, Cornerstone. He signed Clairo to the magazine’s associated record label. Clairo is managed by Mike Ahern and Jimmy Bui. “The whole ‘do-it-yourself’ attitude is everything that I’m about. […] I think it’s really important to be genuine and authentic with everything you do.” —Claire Cottrill, 2017 interview with Fader. In October 2017, an article about Clairo was published by Fader, in which she stated that she was most inspired by Brockhampton, and cited their “do-it-yourself ‘attitude'” as her ethos. Some online communities criticized her comments as disingenuous, arguing that her professional career was borne from nepotism, and thus she should not be considered a true DIY musician. They accused her of being an “industry plant”, in other words, an artist who has backing from the music industry to advance or kick-start their careers, but are deceptively presented as an independent start-up. Such discussion appeared mostly on Reddit. One of the widely shared posts lamented that, although the user enjoyed her music and thought she was an “inspiring” songwriter, they could not fathom why none of her articles and interviews acknowledged her father’s significant industry connections. Clairo described the “industry plant” accusation as sexist and denied that there was “a man behind my success”. The Ringer contributor Lindsay Zoladz commented that it would have likely been more difficult for Clairo to get a record contract without her father’s connections, and that “it is impossible to imagine Clairo’s success in a Gen X world, so vital is the internet to her appeal.” On May 25, 2018, Fader Label released Clairo’s debut record, titled Diary 001. In her review for Pitchfork, Fader contributor Sasha Geffen wrote that the EP ought to subside the “legions of naysayers who dismissed her as a one-hit fluke or an industry plant.” By then, “Pretty Girl” had amassed more than 15 million views on YouTube. A piece written by Joe Coscarelli of The New York Times said that the work: “bridges both worlds, building on the coy, understated bedroom pop of ‘Pretty Girl’ and ‘Flamin Hot Cheetos’ toward sturdier numbers like ‘4EVER’ and ‘B.O.M.D.'”. That same month, she announced a headlining tour throughout North America, opening for Dua Lipa on multiple dates. Her July performance at the Bowery Ballroom in New York was a sold-out show. In October 2018, she performed at Lollapalooza. She is scheduled to perform at Coachella 2019.]

3. Sleater-Kinney – “The Future Is Here”

[9th studio album from Sleater-Kinney, formed in early 1994 in Olympia, Washington, by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The group’s name is derived from Sleater Kinney Road, Interstate 5 exit number 108 in Lacey, Washington, the location of one of their early practice spaces. Tucker was formerly in the influential riot grrrl band Heavens to Betsy, while Brownstein was formerly in the queercore band Excuse 17. They often played at gigs together and formed Sleater-Kinney as a side-project from their respective bands. When Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 disbanded, Sleater-Kinney became their primary focus. Janet Weiss of Quasi is the band’s longest lasting and final drummer, until after this was released when she announced she was leaving the band. Sleater-Kinney has had other drummers, including Lora Macfarlane, Misty Farrell, and Toni Gogin. Upon Tucker’s graduation from The Evergreen State College (where Brownstein remained a student for three more years), she and then-girlfriend Brownstein took a trip to Australia in early 1994. Their last day there, they stayed up all night recording what would become their self-titled debut album. It was released the following spring. They followed this with Call the Doctor (1996) and Dig Me Out (1997), and became critical darlings. The lineup features: Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and Janet Weiss (for this record on drums).]

4. Mavis Staples – “We Get By (feat. Ben Harper)”

[14th studio solo album from rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. The album’s cover features the photograph “Outside Looking In” by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden. The album was produced and written by Ben Harper. Staples & Harper had previously collaborated on “Love and Trust”, a song from Staples’ 2016 album, Livin’ on a High Note. In a statement, Staples said, “These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.” Mavis Staples has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down.]

[“Believe in the Trees and Bees” was chosen by Rob Thomas be part of the soundtrack for “Veronica Mars” on Hulu. Rob Thomas is a producer of that show. Formed in Austin, Texas in August 2015, Band Members include: Andrew Duplantis, Jacob Schulze, Travis Garaffa, David Garrett, and Mike McCoy. Kansas native and Austin resident Mike McCoy is a man for all seasons. A gifted singer, composer, songwriter, social commentator and conceptual artist from the heartland, McCoy has been making music for more than 30 years, incorporating a whiplash array of styles and genres from country-roots to punk to performance art and power pop. All overlap in McCoy’s world. Mike founded the KC power-pop band Cher UK (Cargo/FistPuppet) & (Red Decibel/Columbia Records) in the mid 1990s and has fronted other quirky conceptual bands (often, tongue planted firmly in cheek) such as the Black Rabbits of Lawrence, Kansas, and two Austin critics’ darlings, the American People and the Service Industry. Mike is also a prolific solo artist whose latest venture, The Death Bus (digital release only), harkens back to his earliest and perhaps most natural milieu — roots/country/balladeer expanding his solo repertoire and he hopes to wrap up the year with a new record. A religion studies and art-history graduate of TCU, fund-raising researcher at Yale, a carpenter/designer in Austin, an online “word contortionist” and a former museum administrator in KC, McCoy’s truest calling is the crafting of songs. He’s a hayseed intellectual-philosopher whose compositions strike the right balance of plaintive and high-brow, sardonic and humble. McCoy brings a singular, poet’s sensibility to the music equation. He writes about a wonderful waitress in a rundown town who has the power to make or break your stay (“if you treat her well, you might get what you want…”), about an immigrant woman whose dreams of America lead her to a lonesome life as a domestic (“feather duster I believe her, no one sees the way I see her…”), about American apathy and how winter is a submarine (“winter is a submarine — I lay inside and I no longer dream…”). In most of McCoy’s songs, there is something deeply wistful, despite the freighted narratives and their dizzying wordplay. He’s a serious guy and he writes about serious stuff. Yet in the lyrics and in the spaces between words and melody, you can almost hear that lone whistle blow in the dark of a heartlands night; you hear a style of writing that combines political commentary and snarky populism with an inextinguishable belief that somehow, with the right blend of gumption and fortitude, we humans might just pull off something good. He’s equal parts punk-rock-Americana — a strange brew of Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, John Mellencamp, Ramones and Burl Ives. Mike McCoy grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. In the early 1990s his band Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City playing with popular themes in punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and plays in his band Mike McCoy’s Trompe-l’œil. Mike has also played in the bands The Service Industry and The American People. Mike McCoy is best known in Kansas City for his band Cher UK. Mike will be stopping by The Vinyl Underground at 7th Heaven to play a few songs from the new album and maybe even a few Cher UK songs.

A gifted singer, composer, songwriter, social commentator and conceptual artist from the heartland, McCoy has been making music for more than 30 years, incorporating a whiplash array of styles and genres from country-roots to punk to performance art and power pop. All overlap in McCoy’s world.

The band was originally called Cher. First recordings on cassette, the band went through several line-up changes and the band’s name changed to Cher UK and got a record deal with Red Decible Records from Minneapolis.

In 2004 Mike founded the North vs. South Music Festival, as a bi-annual, bi-polar music festival designed to showcase independent rock along the I-35 corridor.

On November 2, 2018 the band released their EP Renditions, with 4 songs written by The Doors, The Beatles, The Cranberries, and Bon Jovi. Robert Castillo is from Kansas City. He went to Northgate Middle School and North Kansas City High School.

He learned piano in 2nd grade, violin in 4th grade, cello in 6th grade, bass in 7th grade. He played in the high school jazz band,

When he was 18 he moved to Chicago and took classes in Jazz Studies at North Central College.

In the Spring of 2014 Robert Castillo moved to rural Oregon where he enrolled in the Americore program and put himself in “Service to America.” He was placed in Fossil Oregon where he worked as a K- 8 grade Music Teacher, (28 students total).

It was during his free time in Oregon that The Sextet began as a band.

Robert Castillo is married to Kathryn Castillo. They have been married for 4 years, and have been together for 10 years.

Robert Castillo is also a painter and his works have been featured at PT’s Coffee, Mattie Rhodes, and InterUrban ArtHouse. He works in watercolor, oils, and acrylics.

Robert Castillo was a graduate of Artist Inc. He was in the same class as Jen Harris.

One of our favorite area bands is Under The Big Oak Tree, an Acoustic Folk, Country Roots from St Joseph, Missouri band formed by: Kristin Hamilton, Doug “Sluggo” Ward, and Simon Fink. We have played music from all three of their albums. Band member Simon Fink who was on WMM on June 5, sharing music from his beautiful book/CD release LULLABIES TIL DAWN that he recorded with The Wires, writes:

Mike McCoy grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. In the early 1990s his band Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City with their their music playing with popular themes in punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and fronts his band the Service Industry. Mike is the founder of The North vs. South Music Festival. This Saturday night, October 20, Cher UK play Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club on Sat, Oct. 20 w/ The Pedajets and Hot Dog Skeletons.

Mike McCoy, Mark Reynolds, talked about the early days of Cher UK and the local music scene.

The band was originally called Cher. Many of their first recordings were released on cassette, the band went through several line-up changes and the band’s name changed to Cher UK.

Mike McCoy talked about his love of metaphor in music and the inspirations Cher UK’s new songs for their new EP.

Mike McCoy talked about the contributions of Mike Stover on guitar for the new recordings and the musicianship of Kyle Dahlquist who contributed on horns.

In 2004 Mike McCoy founded the North vs. South Music Festival, as you call is a bi-annual, bi-polar music festival designed to showcase independent rock along the I-35 corridor. This festival has grown each year.

Matt Kessler discussed the new recordings of The Pedaljets and how the band will release a single in December and their new full length record on vinyl in 2013.

Sneaky Creeps were last with us as Guest Produers / Co-Hosts, on WMM on June 13 when Max joined us live in the studio, and Andrew joined us by phone from Indianapolis, where he was working on an installation.

For today’s show Andrew Erdrich joined us live in the studio. Andrew is a graduate of The Kansas City Art Institute, who with Sean Starowitz, founded: BREAD! KC, an art project that celebrated their 2nd year of creating funding for local artists by hosting a dinner, where for a $10 donation, diners are served a bowl of fresh soup, fresh baked bread, and a ballot. Three different creative projects are presented, and diners vote for one to receive the money collected from the evening. In under a year, BREAD! KC has awarded over many thousands in micro-grants to area writers, gardeners, bands and artists. Andrew Erdrich has also been part of the Urban Culture Project and works at Vahalla Press.

[Chicago band consisting, for most of their career, of David Grubbs and Jim O’Rourke. Between 1993 and 1998 they put out seven albums. Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait and Bastro, formed the band in Chicago in 1991. They released their first album, The Serpentine Similar, in 1993. This early lineup saw Grubbs joined by Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire, both members of Bastro’s final incarnation, on bass guitar and drums respectively. In 1994 Brown and McEntire left to join Tortoise and guitarist, composer and producer Jim O’Rourke joined.]

[Born February 28, 1939 – Died February 22, 2001. American fingerstyle guitarist and composer who played the steel-string acoustic guitar as a solo instrument. His style has been greatly influential and has been described as the foundation of American Primitivism, a term borrowed from painting and referring mainly to the self-taught nature of the music and its minimalist style. Fahey borrowed from the folk and blues traditions in American roots music, having compiled many forgotten early recordings in these genres. He would later incorporate classical, Portuguese, Brazilian, and Indian music into his sound. Fahey spent many of his later years in poverty and poor health, but enjoyed a minor career resurgence with a turn towards the more explicitly avant-garde, and created a series of abstract paintings during the last years of his life. Recorded live at the Cooler Studio in Kansas City, Kansas, with Chad Meise, and mastered by Collin Jordan at the Boiler Room in Chicago, using both vintage analog and modern digital technologies. Antony’s first record, “Antony and the Johnsons” was released in 2000. “I Am A Bird Now” was released in 2005. The album featured guest appearances by Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, Boy George and Devendra Banhart and received the Mercury Award for the best UK album of 2005. “The Crying Light” was released in January 2009 and peaked at number 1 on the European Billboard charts. “Swanlights” was released in October of 2010. West Plains, Missouri native, Marideth Sisco is a journalist, teacher, author, musician, and creator of Elder Mountain Press, publishing stories of Ozarks culture. You can hear her essays “These Ozarks Hills” on public radio, ksmu.org. Discovered by producers of the Academy Award Nominated film, “Winter’s Bone” who asked her to be a part of the film and to serve as music consultant. “Winter’s Bone,” ended up winning best picture and best screenplay at Sundance Film Festival, it was honored at the Berlin Film Festival.

After the film festivals, the band that created the music for the film, completed a 27-city, “Amazing Geriatric Hillbilly U.S. World Tour” to promote the Winter’s Bone soundtrack, and then almost as quickly released their own critically acclaimed full length recording,”In These Ozark Hills,” from Light in The Attic Records.

Marideth Sisco and The Blackberry Winter Band return to KC to perform this Saturday, August 18, at 8:00 PM, at The Historic Folly Theatre, in benefit for the Bright Futures Fund.

“June Carter,” is from Blackberry Winter’s “In These Ozark Hills.” June Carter Cash was such a force of talent and spirit. Marideth talked about seeing June Carter and her sisters perform, when she was a young girl.

Even if Marideth had never met the producers of “Winter’s Bone,” I would still be impressed by her work as a writer, publisher, radio contributor, musician, storyteller. The film and the soundtrack received so much critical acclaim that they given her another platform to share these Ozark Stories. Marideth talked about being in a band and traveling around the world performing her songs.

The Blackberry Winter Band debut solo release: “In These Ozark Hills” contains several traditional songs one would expect from this band, along with several beautiful original songs, but the recording also includes several re-interpretations of songs by Tom Waits, Natalie Merchant, and a fantastic version of Buffy St. Marie’s “Cod’ine.” The reinterpretations seem like original songs when Marideth sings them, especially, “Who Will Watch The Home Place?”

The Blackberry Winter Band includes: Marideth Sisco and Linda Stoffel – Vocals, Dennis Crider – Guitar, Van Colbert – Banjo, Tedi May – Upright Bass, Bo Brown – Mandolin & Dobro. Tell us how The Blackberry Winter Band was originally formed?

The harmonies, banjo, fiddle, bass, dobro, mandolin, & guitar all are anchored by Marideth’s honest, clear vocals. One could say, “clear as gin,” as she sings in the opening track,”In These Hills.”

When she was 19, singing allowed Marideth enough money to pay her way through a year at Missouri State University, (then known as Southwest Missouri State College) majoring in music, but she was told that she “would never make it in performance, composition or orchestration, because she was a woman and would never make a living at any of those jobs.

Marideth left college and went West, landing in San Francisco, then Santa Cruz, then Los Angeles, playing plenty of music but always trying to maintain a day job, with limited success. Marideth came to Missouri to help her Aunt Juanita and Uncle Leonard move home, and somehow just never went back. She returned to school instead attending Southwest Mo. State University, and got a BFA in photography and minor in writing, and took a job as a journalist, finishing a 20-year career in that field in 2005. After heart surgery, she retired.

“Winter’s Bone” gave new found recognition to her voice and allowed Marideth to continue her passion of music.

Missouri is a big state, that many consider and smaller version of the entire country, with border coasts on the east and west, a north that is very different than it’s south. West Plains, Missouri, the county seat of Howell County, sits in the middle of Missouri’s southern border with Arkansas. West Plains is the birth place of Porter Waggoner and Dick Van Dyke, and the home of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Marideth talked about what she loved best about the Ozarks, the smells, the feeling of the air.

Originally formed in 1994, The Kansas City band The Brannock Device includes: Jason Beers on Bass & Vocals, Bernie Dugan on Drums, Marco Pascolini on Guitar, and Elaine McMilian on Vocals.

The band is getting ready to release their new album, “Into The Witness Chamber,” and will be participating in the Sonic Spectrum Tribute to the Minutemen, Sunday, June 24, at 8:00 PM, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Road, KCMO, with Troy Meiss, Uft!, Robot Monkey Madman, Jorge Arena Trio, and Chad Rex.

Jason Beers, along with his work as a soloist, playing the saw at the Folly with The New Century Follies, or The Fishtank, or the recent Beatles tribute, or his work with other bands, has kept this band alive for nearly 20 years, having formed the band in 1994 with guitarist Jeremy Schutte and Bernie Dugan.

Jason Beers and Marco Pascolini also play together in the band Dead Voices with Mike Stover, Matt Richey and David Regnier. We’ll be hearing from David Regnier in our second hour when we play Ruddy Swain. Marco Pascolini also plays in the band Mr. Marco’s V7 with Mike Stover, Johnny Hamil, Kent Burnham, and Kyle Dahlquist. Marco Pascolini also played in the band Expassionates with Scott Easterday, Sam Platt and our guest in the second hour, Richard Burgess.

Bernie Dugan also plays in the band The Quivers, and in the band, Cher UK with Mike McCoy & Mark Reynolds. Cher UK and The Quivers will both be putting out a new music soon.

Richard Burgess played live on our show, several years ago, as bass player with the beloved KC band Expassionates. Richard joined us today to discuss his new solo release, “Midwestern Wind,” and to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Richard Burgess will be in concert, Saturday, June 23 at 7:00 PM in a special CD Release Party at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Road.

Pendergast frontman, and film maker Tony Ladesich wrote that Richard Burgess is, “the best bass player ever, seriously, Rich “tennis racket” Burgess. Rich has, to my calculations, never EVER played a note that didn’t need to be played. He is a master of economy and soul. Always in search of a deeper truth musically and never afraid to lay down the law.”

Richard spent 15 years playing with the band Hadacol.

Richard grew up here in the midwest, graduated from Raytown High, graduated from Rockhurst University, the 12 songs on Richard’s new recording were all written by him, and seem timeless.

Expassionates were an interesting combination of many different genre of music, including country. “Midwestern Wind” seems to continue with some of those americana themes.

Krystle Warren’s new album came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the double vinyl release. ]
