Julia Othmer & Bill Sundahl of KKFI’s 30th Anniversary
+ Chris Haghirian & Nathan Reusch of Middle of the Map Fest

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980 [WMM’s theme song]

2. Fantastic Negrito – “The Duffler”
from: Please Don’t Be Dead / Blackball Universe / June 15, 2018
[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

[Fantastic Negrito plays Knuckleheads, Wednesday, July 11, at 8:00 PM, with Levee Town.]

3. Rooftop Vigilantes – “Oracle Cop”
from: Let It Be / High Dive Records / July 22, 2016

They have now been signed to High Dive Records. For this new album, most of the songs were recorded in the basement of band member Seth Wiese. They finished the album on tour, and some of the parts were done in NYC, as was the mixing.]

[Rooftop Vigilantes are celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a reunion show of their original lineup and a full stack of their classic tunes, at Voltaire, Friday, June 29, at 11:00 with Drugs & Attics.]

14. Built To Spill – “The Plan”
from: Keep It Like A Secret / Warner Bros. / February 2, 1999
[Members include: Doug Martsch, Steve Gere, & Jason Albertini based in Boise, Idaho. The band has released 8 full-length albums. Guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as original members. In an interview with Spin, Martsch stated that he intended to change the band’s lineup for every album, himself as the only permanent member. After their first album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, was released in 1993, Netson & Youtz were replaced by Brett Nelson & Andy Capps for 1994’s There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. A compilation album called The Normal Years followed, which included recordings by both lineups. Built to Spill Caustic Resin, an EP that features Martsch with the members of Caustic Resin, was released in 1996. Between recording albums in 1995, the band gained exposure by playing the Lollapalooza tour. Also in 1995, the band collaborated on the song “Still Flat” for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered, produced by the Red Hot Organization. Martsch signed Built to Spill to Warner Bros. Records in 1995. The deal the band brokered with Warner Bros. allowed it to retain a large degree of creative control over future albums. Built to Spill produced its first major label release in 1997 with Perfect from Now On. By this time, the band consisted of Martsch, Nelson, Netson, and Scott Plouf. Perfect from Now On was met with critical success and caused Built to Spill to become one of the most recognizable indie rock bands. Before releasing another album, Martsch made Nelson and Plouf permanent members of the band. In 1999, the band released Keep It Like a Secret to continued critical success and for the first time, significant commercial success. Live was released in 2000, and the band’s 5th studio album, Ancient Melodies of the Future, was released in 2001. The band’s 8th album Untethered Moon was released on April 18, 2015. The album was recorded as a trio with Martsch, Albertini, and Gere and was co-produced by Martsch and frequent Built to Spill guest keyboardist Sam Coomes. On Sept. 14, 2017 Built to Spill announced on their Facebook page that they were moving on from Warner Brothers and taking over the management of builttospill.com.]

15. Nikki Lane – “Jackpot”
from: Highway Queen / New West Records / February 13, 2017
[Nikki Lane was born October 17, 1983, in Greenville, South Carolina, and dropped out of high school there. She then worked as a fashion designer for a time, before moving to Los Angeles in 2006 and later to New York City. After doing so, she broke up with a country musician, who left her to record an album in Alabama; this experience inspired her to begin writing country music songs. Lane, who now lives in Nashville, also owns and operates a clothing store called “High Class Hillbilly”. Nikki Lane is an American country music singer-songwriter and artist. She has released three albums: Walk of Shame, All or Nothin’, and Highway Queen. Highway Queen was recorded near Dallas, TX at The Echo Lab from February to June 2016 with Nikki’s boyfriend Jonathan Tyler, as well as the other members of her current touring band. Two music videos were released ahead of the album’s release; the title track, Highway Queen, in which Nikki and friends crush cars with a monster truck, and Jackpot, in which Nikki and Jonathan Tyler successfully try their luck in old Sin City, ultimately resulting in a Vegas chapel wedding..]

New & MidCoastal Releases + Doby Watson
+ Witch Jail + Kadesh Flow

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Universal / Dec. 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme]

2. Beach House – “Dark Spring”
from: 7 / Sub Pop Records / Expected May 11, 2018
[th studio album from American dream pop band from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2004. The band consists of vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist, keyboardist, and backup vocalist Alex Scally. Unlike with previous records, Beach House took their time with the recording process of this album. Instead of one long studio session, they recorded when inspired by batches of songs, which resulted in five mini-sessions over the course of eleven months. All of the songs on the album began in the duo’s home studio in Baltimore, and were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles. The band stated that their goal throughout the recording process of the album was “rebirth and rejuvenation,” continuing: “We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically, we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the album’s feel.” The band also stated that 7 didn’t have a producer in the traditional sense, which let the ideas drive the creativity and not any one person’s process. The band’s touring drummer since 2016, James Barone, plays on the entire record. They also worked with Peter Kember, known by the stage name Sonic Boom, who helped “in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection. Thematically, 7 often deals with “the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny.” The album’s title itself simply represents it being the duo’s seventh studio album, saying they “hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album,” although they later mentioned that the number 7 represents some interesting connections in numerology, which further inspired them in naming the album as such. The band cited the “societal insanity” during 2016 and 2017 as a deep influence on the creation of the record, elaborating: “there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and perfect moments, was an endless source.”]

3. The Get Up Kids – “Maybe”
from: Kicker EP / Polyvinyl Record Co / To Be Released June 8, 2018
[Matt Pryor on vocals & guitars, Jim Suptic on guitar, Rob Pope on bass, James Dewees on keyboards, Ryan Pope on drums. On March 29, 2018, Polyvinyl Records announced on their Instagram account that they had signed the band and that new music will be coming soon. The Get Up Kids are an American rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. Their second album Something to Write Home About remains their most widely acclaimed album, and is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the second-wave emo movement. However, like many early emo bands, The Get Up Kids sought to dissociate themselves with the term, as it was considered dismissive to be seen as an “emo band.” The band departed heavily from their established style with the release of their 2002 album On a Wire, which saw the band take on a much more layered, alternative rock sound. Years later, guitarist Jim Suptic even apologized for having the influence they did on many of the modern third-wave emo bands, commenting that “[t]he punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now … If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” Due to internal conflicts, the band broke up in 2005. Three years later, the band reunited to support the tenth anniversary re-release of Something to Write Home About, and soon afterward entered the studio to write new material. In early 2010, the band released Simple Science, their first release in six years, followed in 2011 by the full-length There Are Rules. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams.]

[On June 14 The Get Up Kids will launch a 20 city month long US Tour]

4. Shy Boys – “Keeps Me On My Toes”
from: Shy Boys / High Dive Records / January 17, 2014
[On April 3, 2018 it was announced that Shy Boys had been signed to San Francisco based, national label, Polyvinyl Records. Hailed as “The Beach Boys on Robitussin”, Shy Boys (brothers Collin & Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little & Ross Brown) were bred in the dankest basements of Kansas City, MO as a group of ill-fitting squares in a scene of punks and weirdos. We find these great friends now, still living & loving in KC, trading instruments while creating melodic, happy-sad tunes to make your heart swell. Shy Boys’ sophomore album will arrive later this year on Polyvinyl Record Co., bringing with it big, melancholic vocal harmonies of a past’s present, amidst these strange and bittersweet future daze. This was the bands debut release. Brothers Collin Rausch, Kyle Rausch, and friend and roommate at the time Konnor Ervin, created this record. Collin and Kyle’s father was a High School band director and music teacher. Konnor Ervin was the lead singer and songwriter of The ACBs, where Kyle also played drums. The 10 song release had two singles premiered by Stereogum. “Keeps Me On My Toes” was a song Collin wrote in 15 minutes while his girlfriend was in the shower. Wednesday MidDay Medley has been a big fan of The Shy Boys and all of the ACBs recordings. In 2011 we started playing songs from The I’ms, a duo made of up Collin and Kyle, who posted 6 of their self recorded songs on their facebook page. We included this informal release in our Top Ten of The 111 Best Recordings of 2011. 3 of the songs from The I’ms recordings ended up being re-recorded for Shy Boys. The album was recorded at West End Studio, over two-weekends.]

[On Saturday, April 14 Shy Boys launch their 15 city US tour at Replay Lounge, in Lawrence Kansas, with Cocordion, Fraydee Cat, and Fullbloods.]

Doby Watson

Singer-Songwriter Doby Watson has just released his new EP, Family Mattress Deluxe, a collection of songs written by Doby and co-produced with Zack Hames. Doby Watson was born in 1986. Instead of attending college, as Richard Gintowt wrote for The Pitch in 2009, “Watson spent his young-adult years touring the country with a guitar and a box of Clif Bars, one for lunch, then a real meal for dinner, and a bunch of sad and beautiful homespun songs that are as sparse and haunting as those of Leonard Cohen or Jason Molina.” In 2009 Doby released Twenty Two. In 2013 He released Watson & May an EP in collaboration with Margo May that was produced & engineered by Lennon Bone. Double Shift Music released Doby’s album Live-In Son in 2014, and the EP collaborative: Swearengin, Watson & May in 2016. More info at: http://www.dobywatson.bandcamp.com

10. Doby Watson – “In Rows” (Live)
This song was on Doby’s album: Live-In Son / Double Shift Music / October 17, 2014
[For the record: Watson performed the songs live, while being recorded, in Ross Brown’s basement in KCMO. The next day, also in Brown’s basement, Grant Buell (Rhodes), Jerad Tomasino (vocals) and Hannah Jensen (viola), having never practiced with each other or Watson, improvised their parts over the live recordings of Watson. Richard Gintowt added additional vocals at his home in San Francisco, CA. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings & auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. Mastered by Cory Schulz in Milwaukee, WI.]

We are talking with Singer-Songwriter Doby Watson who has just released his new EP, Family Mattress Deluxe, on February 23, 2018, on Error Records.

From Doby’s own words: “When I was a kid I played guitar in some hardcore bands. When I found myself without a band, at the end of high school, I started trying to sing and write songs. Falling on the moniker “Boo Hiss” (something a class mate of mine said in place of swear words). I put some songs online and got asked to be on a small DIY label from Ohio called Tract Records. Around that time, I befriended touring DIY artists’ such as Viking Moses, Real Live Tigers, Manipulator Alligator and a young man named Joseph Murphy (who was in tons of bands), as well. Through these connections I was encouraged to tour and became involved in the Midwest’s various DIY communities, making countless friends.”

“Rather than go to college, I chose to focus solely on DIY touring and releasing music (for much of it taking my good friend, then KC native, and amazing songwriter, Austin Swearengin with me for most of these tours). ”

“Around that same time, I made an attempt to be taken more “seriously”, dropped my moniker and unsuccessfully released a mini-album under my own name. After some rather chaotic and unorganized tours for the album, I became depressed and disillusioned with music. I set music aside as a priority, moved to Lawrence, KS and tried to assimilate to what I thought was a ‘normal’ life. ”

“I went to college, got a day job, and wound up generally hating life. This new ‘normal’ path inevitably didn’t work out for me – I moved back in with my parents and held various dead end jobs and sank deeper into a depression, completely ceasing to make any music.”

“I (Doby) performed the songs live, while being recorded, in Ross Brown’s basement in Kansas City, MO. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings and auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. The results were mastered by Cory Schulz in MIlwaukee, WI. ”

The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings & auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. Prior to her solo project, Michelle Zauner fronted Post Post, an indie pop band with students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, then started the Philadelphian emo band Little Big League. Zauner fronted the band between 2011 and 2014, before returning to her hometown of Eugene, Oregon in 2013. Zauner made the trek back home in the wake of her mother being diagnosed with cancer. While at home, tending her family in Oregon, Zauner began recording solo music. Zauner described the project as having much more to say following Tropical Jinx, the 2014 studio album by Little Big League. Originally, Zauner had begun to record early samples of music as a self-meditative and “instant-gratification” feeling.[3] Two years later, the solo project itself eventually became the work of Psychopomp the debut album by Japanese Breakfast. The name of the band, according to Zauner is a juxtaposition of Asian exoticism and American culture. Despite the name, Zauner is not of Japanese descent, but Korean descent.Zauner described the debut album as quite “dark and heavy-handed”, although she had a desire to make the music, urgent and “sonically upbeat.” On June 23, 2016, the Japanese Breakfast project was signed to the Dead Oceans label.]

Bass Guitar: Ben Garner. Keyboards, Organ, Piano & Percussion: Johnny Gentile. Fender Rhodes on “I Don’t Want To Wake Up”: Warren Pash. Additional Background Vocals: Leah Korbin. Special thanks to Noam Chomsky for graciously allowing use of his words in “Black & White World.” Black & White World is dedicated to those with the courage to speak truth to power. All Songs Written & Arranged By: Salar Rajabnik / BMI / 2017. Salar Rajabnik is a product of time spent in lots of seemingly contrasting places. Born in the Atlanta area, he was immersed in the world of southern American roots music. The strong Persian cultural influence of his father, an Iranian immigrant, was just as evident at a young age. This was strengthened by time ispent living in Iran. From the beginning this unexpected amalgamation of cultures began to create the foundation that would define him as a musician and person. A move to Kansas City at the age of 12 prompted Salar to pick up his first instrument, the bass guitar. Between the clubs, streets, festivals, churches, basements, bars, arenas, schools, & studios, playing bass, drums, or guitar, he took every opportunity to play that he could. While his influences seem conflicting on the surface level the underlying and unifying principles and themes are strong. Whether he was dancing to Persian music with his family in Iran, learning Motown basslines in his room while his friends listened to boy bands, or jamming in the historic 18th & Vine district with jazz veterans till sunrise, for Salar it’s always been about playing with heart, soul, and honesty. Salar has set out to venerate those who have and continue to respect the gift of music and it’s important role in life, regardless of any classification or style. After years of playing in bands and as a live & studio musician Salar relocated to Nashville, Tennessee & formed a backing band in 2014 & released a debut EP, both dubbed “Moon Age”. Leaving Nashville as a homebase & the Moon Age moniker behind, Salar recently relocated back to Kansas City to release his full length album.]

Additional recording at The Wormhole, Goodwin House, and Cat Parrie’s apartment by Pat Goodwin and Dylan Hanwright. Mixed by John Goodmanson. Mastered by Paul Gold of Salt Mastering. Great Grandpa began in Seattle in 2014 when guitarist & vocalist Patrick Goodwin recruited bassist Carrie Miller, drummer Cam LaFlam, and vocalist Alex Menne to form a humble rock band. Inspired by the pop-sensible alternative rock of the 90’s, and offset by a mutual love for noise and math rock, the group set forth to write and record their first EP. During recording, guitarist Dylan Hanwright joined the group, solidifying the lineup. Great Grandpa began performing in the Seattle area in late 2014, frequenting the city’s DIY venues. In March of 2015, their debut EP Can Opener was released on Broken World Media. The EP was met with considerable praise, and has been described as “warm, slightly off-kilter grunge pop”, and “knotty, twisted, and warm rock music that’s as melodically satisfying as it is, at times, confounding.” Great Grandpa began writing their debut LP soon after, and found themselves touring the western US and performing extensively in the Seattle area. Written in 2015 and 2016, Great Grandpa’s debut LP Plastic Cough continues to explore the sonic territory visited in Can Opener, exhibiting infectious melodies across a range of backdrops, from quiet bedroom-pop to explosive, anthemic rock.]

Produced by Bowie and mixed by Tony Visconti, it was recorded on the Diamond Dogs Tour in September 1974, some material from which appeared in the BBC documentary Cracked Actor. The full show spans across five sides of vinyl, with the sixth featuring an etching of Bowie. The album differs from the first Bowie live album, David Live, recorded on the same tour. It features a different and more R&B-oriented lineup, including long time collaborators Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar, as well as, backing singer Luther Vandross. The setlist also includes material recorded for The Gouster, an album which later would turn into Young Americans.] Pitchfork wrote: “This live album is culled from a show late in David’s Bowie’s 1974 tour. It’s heavy on material from Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane and finds a drug-addled Bowie in a moment of transition.”]

Aaron Rhodes wrote in the July 8 issue of The Pitch that, “Iddy Vice is a Kansas City rapper with a distinctive appreciation for grime — Britain’s most successful hip-hop movement. Vice’s debut EP, Christflow, contains the hurried flows and slick production made popular by artists like Skepta and Jme.” Aron also wrote in Shuttlecock Muaic Magazine: “Iddy Vice is a problem. The young and highly capable Kansas City rapper released a small handful of impressive singles over the course of 2016, but without much warning, just dropped his EP in its final days. “Christflow” is six songs long and not one is worth skipping.”
