The album’s tracks include monologues in which Ernestine tangles over the phone with Joan Crawford, Gore Vidal (“Mr. Veedle”), Martha Mitchell, and J. Edgar Hoover. It was recorded live at the intimate Ice House in Pasadena, California. The album, Tomlin’s first, won her a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. Tomlin became the first woman to win this award for a solo recording (in 1962 Elaine May won for an album with Mike Nichols; in the years since only Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Griffin among female comedians have won the award.) The album peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums list, the highest charting solo comedy album by a woman ever on the chart.]

16. Jim Nabors – “It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”

[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again. Jim Nabors passed away on November 30, 2017 at 87.]

18. Thelma Houston – “Don’t Leave Me This Way (Single Version)”
from: Any Way You Like It / Motown / December 2, 1976
[George Benson on guitar. Produced by Hal Davis. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was covered by Motown in 1976. Originally assigned to Diana Ross, it was intended to be the follow-up to her hit “Love Hangover” but was reassigned and given to the upcoming Motown artist Thelma Houston instead.” Written by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert. First charting as a hit for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, an act on Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label in 1975, “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was later a huge disco hit for Motown artist Thelma Houston in 1977. The song was also a major hit for British group the Communards in 1986. Thelma Houston was born May 7, 1946. She scored a number-one hit in 1977 with her recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi. Her mother was a cotton picker. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. She is not related to Whitney Houston. In 1969, Houston released her debut album, entitled Sunshower, produced, arranged and composed by Jimmy Webb except for one track. In 1971 she signed with Motown Records but her early recordings with them were largely unsuccessful. Her most notable single during that period was “You’ve Been Doing Wrong for So Long” which peaked at #64 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1974. However Houston’s vocal prowess on that track secured her a nomination for a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 1973 Motown Productions announced a projected biopic of Dinah Washington which would star Houston; however the project was dropped due to difficulties in getting clearance from Washington’s relatives. In April 1974 Houston joined the cast of The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, playing various characters during the show’s skits. The show was canceled in August and for the next several years her work was limited to demo recordings and performing at small venues. Houston took acting classes and received her first role in the 1975 made-for-television film Death Scream. In that same year Sheffield Lab released “I’ve Got the Music in Me” a Direct to disc recording by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker that went on to become a benchmark vinyl recording for audiophiles. The following year she recorded songs for the soundtrack of the film The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings starring Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones. In 1975 Houston appeared on the Golden Globe Award broadcast performing the nominated song “On & On” and also was featured in a tribute to Berry Gordy on that year’s American Music Award broadcast singing “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”. That year Houston’s version of “Do You Know Where You’re Going To” was being set for single release when it was pulled and the song given to Diana Ross to serve as the theme song for the movie Mahogany. In 1976 Houston sang backing vocals for Motown label mate Jermaine Jackson on his album My Name Is Jermaine. Houston released her third album Any Way You Like It in 1976. The first single released was her version of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ 1975 song “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. In February 1977 the track hit Number 1 in the U.S. on the R&B and Club Play Singles charts, then in April 1977 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” won Houston the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys for 1977. Besides its US success “Don’t Leave Me This Way” became a hit in at least twelve countries, including the UK where it reached Number 13 despite the concurrent single release of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes original, which reached Number 5. Also in 1977 Houston teamed up with Jerry Butler to record the album Thelma & Jerry and that November 1977 she co-starred in the film Game Show Models. It was announced in February 1977 that Houston would star as Bessie Smith in a filmation of the play Me and Bessie, to be produced by Motown; after an announcement that December that Houston was set to portray Bessie Smith in a biopic to be produced in 1978 by Columbia Pictures nothing more was heard of the project.]

10:43 – Underwriting

10:45 – “Just say the lines and don’t bump into the furniture.”

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, is Queer friendly, accepting of LGBTQIA, it has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were captivating to me, the lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, is a treat.

After Noel we’ll hear Paul Lynde from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Bye Bye Birdie,” followed by Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in “Bye Bye Birdie” while auditioning for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
Charles Nelson Reilly was playing three parts in Bye Bye Birdie winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical of 1960. How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying won the Tony for Best Musical in 1961 and Reilly won The Tony for his portrayal of Bud Frump.

10:47 – Songs about “Tots,” “Kids” and “Coffee”

19. Noel Coward – “What’s Going To Happen To the Tots”
from: Noel Coward in New York / drg / 2003 [orig. 1957] [Born Dec. 16, 1899 / died Mar. 26, 1973. English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”. Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers including Graham Payn, his long-time partner, and in Coward’s diaries & letters, published posthumously.]

20. Paul Lynde & Marijane Maricle -“Kids”
from: Bye Bye Birdie! (Original Broadway Cast) / / 1960
[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

21. Charles Nelson Reilly – “The Audition”

I heart Local Music is throwing an event during PRIDE month to celebrate the queer musicians in our community. This is open to ALL AGES.

FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM:

Vibralux
Wick & The Tricks
Calvin Arsenia
Cuee
Yanna the supa flowa

There will be performances from drag queens (including MsAmanda Love!) & queer DJs.

I Heart Local Music notes: “As a straight entity, WE WILL NOT BE PROFITING FROM THIS EVENT. The only people who will be making money are the QUEER PERFORMERS and QUEER STAFF (The Jackpot will hire queer audio engineers and bar staff). This event is FOR queer members of our community, and they will be the only ones who turn a profit as a result. We feel this is an important aspect to maintain in Pride events, as many queer readers have messaged us and expressed concern that too many straight entities turn a profit from queer-targeted events. So we curated this festival to rectify that. Because we love you.”

Many thanks to Ladybird Diner, Salon Blush, and Jackpot Music Hall for helping sponsor this event to make sure our queer performers are paid.

25. Supa Flowa – “Supa Flowa”
from: The Supa Flowa EP / R.I.O.T. LLC / May 4, 2018
[Supa Flowa, also known as Yanna, is a multi-media artist and rapper currently based out of Kansas City. The Supa Flowa Ep is a very vulnerable, yet an uplifting play on Yanna’s experience in dealing with anxiety, self doubt, and becoming comfortable with the androgynous, “sunflower dyke” that she is. Her goal is to reach out to queer and LGBTQIA youth; who have endured similar experiences to hers, in finding and cultivating self love and peace of mind.]

26. Cuee – “Honey feat. Mich Anne (Clean)”
from: “Honey”- Single / Cuee / November 27, 2017
[Cuee is a Chicago rap artist currently in Lawrence. Fally Afani writes in I Heart Local Music: Your 2017 local queer anthem is here, and we are screaming. Cuee’s “Honey” features local trans songstress Micha Anne, and it’s blasting confidence all over our speakers. LISTEN TO US. This is the track you put on when you’re gussying up for a night of raging on the Replay dance floor. In the song, Micha encourages us to “work it out,” “get sexy now,” and just “slay.” Then, Cuee (always the charmer) pops in, proudly proclaims “I’m brown skinned, I like action” and that she could “pull your girl without askin’.” We’re already a hot mess. 2017 has been such a shit year and we need this unapologetic happiness right now. Together, Cuee and Micha Anne are looking good and slaying. They are our guiding lights in dark times, and we are going to sissy that walk when we follow them into the new frontier. If this is the future of music, sign us up. We are here for it.]

from: Recorded in one-take from a facebook request / Eve Sheldon / May 20, 2018
[Originally recorded by Foolish Sad Robot, a 1990s band made up of Tom Livesay & Ike Sheldon – now Eve Sheldon. Early in the evening on May 20 Eve Sheldon asked “Facebook humans” to request a song of her’s and she would record four of them on the couch and post them. She ended up recording 10 songs in an hour or so, and she wrote to Tim Finn that it “was a fun freakin snapshot of her singing life.” friends chose songs from Foolish Sad Robot, The Wilders, a Trouble In Mind rap. Eve wrote, that the recordings represent her “mellow vocal stylings of this century, and the VERY FIRST song she ever wrote.” (She was was14.) Eve Sheldon called out other singers to ‘get down with this…imagine some 90s cats layin’ down some of their old tunes…and new cats laying down new tunes. i wanna hear!” Eve called out: Mark Smeltzer, David Regnier, Lauren Krum, Betse Ellis, Howard Iceberg, J Ashley Miller…the list is endless…sing for us, y’all!!!!. ]

Cody Critcheloe form the music video “Comeback.”

28. SSION – “Comeback”
from: O / Dero Arcade / May 11, 2018
[“Comeback” is the first single from SSION’s forthcoming LP, O. SSION (pronounced “shun”) is a multifaceted creative project spearheaded by Cody Critcheloe. An art-punk act fronted by flamboyant vocalist/artist Cody Critcheloe, Ssion recorded a series of underground releases during the 2000s, yet were perhaps best recognized for their extravagant live show. Ssion (pronounced “shun”) were founded in Kansas City, MO, by Critcheloe, who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and draw from a range of influences, including the punk spectacle of Iggy Pop and the dance-party new wave of the B-52’s as well as performance art and gay culture. Philip Blue owl Hooser and Chris McCoy Thanks for being with us on WMM.

Torch Song Trilogy — Written by Harvey Fierstein — Presented by The Barn Players,
at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, KCMO, May 31 through June 10.

Torch Song Trilogy is constructed of three moving plays told over three acts: International Stud, Fugue in a Nursery, and Widows and Children First! The life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City is dramatized over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s, through Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and other ground-breaking milestones for the LGBT community. Told with a likable, human voice, Arnold struggles through love, disease, and the challenges of child-rearing. In the tradition of The Normal Heart and The Pride, and one of the pre-cursors for the seminal Angels in America, this award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

Ed – Derrick Freeman
Laurel – Jennifer Loumiet
Alan – Brent Custer
Ma – Elle DeShon
David – Alex Leondedis
Lady Blues – Shelby Bessette & Lynn McCutchen
Ensemble – Sam Hoffman

The award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

The first act derives its name (International Stud) from an actual gay bar of the same name at 117 Perry Street in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 1970s. The bar had a backroom where men engaged in anonymous sex. The backroom plays a central role in the act.

Plot 1971: Arnold (Harvey Fierstein), a New York City female impersonator, meets Ed (Brian Kerwin), a bisexual schoolteacher, and they fall in love. Ed, however, is uncomfortable with his sexuality and he leaves Arnold for a girlfriend, Laurel.

1973-79: During Christmas, Arnold meets the love of his life, a male model named Alan. They settle down together, later spending a weekend with Ed and Laurel in the country, where their relationship is tested but endures. Eventually, they apply to foster a child together with a view to adoption, and their application is eventually successful and so they move to a bigger apartment. However, on their first night at their new home, Alan is killed in a homophobic attack.

1980: Months later, in the spring of 1980, Arnold’s mother comes to visit from Florida, but her visit leads to a long-overdue confrontation. Arnold’s mother disapproves of Arnold’s homosexuality and his planned adoption of a gay teenage son, David (Eddie Castrodad), as well as Arnold’s use of their family burial plot for Alan. They have a series of arguments where Arnold demands that she accept him for who he is, insisting that if she can’t then she has no place in his life. The following morning, before she returns to Florida, they have a conversation where, for the first time, they seem to understand each other. With both David and Ed (who is now more mature and settled) in his life, and a successful new career creating his own stage revue, Arnold’s life is finally complete.

Date premiered – January 15, 1982

1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play
1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)

The central character of this play, Arnold, is a sharp-tongued, nurturing, compassionate, vulnerable, and he is someone who is unable to act normal around his mother, his lovers, and his adopted son because he loves each so dearly. This play allows readers to look beyond the invisible cultural assumptions and make it a comfortable experience. A teacher from a high school in Texas decided to add Torch Song Trilogy in his curriculum. This play was particularly important to teach due to the comfort that society feels in being silent about subjects relating to sexuality. The teacher is convinced that silence can only hurt chances of young adults who are emerging whole during their school years. This play was chosen to educate the students that love comes in all forms. Not only did this play help expand conservative minds, but the play is magically structured so that the audience is invited to build a dialogue with the onstage characters. The writing of this play is innovative and the structure of the play itself is unique that it offers ideas for students to explore and expand their ideas on how to creatively write.

The theme of this play is love, which is a universal language. Although the teacher in Houston, thought that conventional parents would be opposed to the idea that their children are learning about homosexuality, most were open to the idea and spoke about real-life experiences their friends have lived through or they have seen. The student’s parents helped their children to try to understand a world where the heterosexuals were the ones being treated the way the homosexuals were. Some students spoke about their friend’s experiences about various sexual preferences and how this play helped them understand that homosexuality is not something to be afraid of. The risk of teaching this type of story was much less than expected. This play provides a forum to explore the differences between the taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender. The difference between sexism and homophobia is distinguished as well as identifying gender roles and the society’s preconceived notion of what a “drag”, “trans”, “gay”, “lesbian” “questioning”, “a-sexual” might be. Most of these students were a group of twenty-one-year-olds, who are politically correct, but there was concern that arose about teaching this type of literature in a public high school setting.

Fierstein adapted his play for a feature film, released in 1988. It was directed by Paul Bogart and starred Fierstein (Arnold), Anne Bancroft (Ma Beckoff), Matthew Broderick (Alan), Brian Kerwin (Ed), and Eddie Castrodad (David).

29. David Bowie – “Rebel Rebel”
from: A Reality Tour / ISO – Columbia – Legacy / January 25, 2010
[Recorded November 22-23, 2003, Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims. The 2004, live version features David Bowie – vocals, guitars, stylophone, harmonica; Earl Slick – guitar; Gerry Leonard – guitar; Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Under Pressure”; Sterling Campbell – drums; Mike Garson – keyboards, piano; Catherine Russell – keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar, backing vocals. A Reality Tour was a worldwide concert tour by David Bowie in support of the Reality album. The tour commenced on 7 October 7, 2003 at the Forum, Copenhagen, Denmark continuing through Europe, North America, Asia, including a return to New Zealand and Australia for the first time since the 1987 Glass Spider Tour. The tour grossed $46,000,000, making it the ninth-highest grossing tour of 2004. At over 110 shows, the tour was the longest tour of Bowie’s career. Bowie played Kansas City, May 10, 2004, at Starlight Theatre. I was there, seven rows from the stage.]

30. Lou Reed and John Cale – “Small Town”
from: Songs For Drella / Sire – Warner Bros. / 1990
[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

31. The Smiths – “These Things Take Time”
from: The Sound Of The Smiths [Disc 2] / Rhino UK / November 10, 2008
[“These Things Take Time” (12 “b-side of “What Difference Does It Make?”)Included in Hatful of Hollow. The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. NME named the Smiths the “most influential artist ever” in a 2002 poll. In 2003, four of the band’s albums appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the group signed to the independent record label Rough Trade Records, on which they released four studio albums: The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). They have also released several compilations, and numerous non-album singles. They had several singles reach the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart and all four of their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including Meat Is Murder which hit number one. They won a significant following and remain cult favourites. The band broke up in 1987 due to internal tensions and have turned down several offers to reunite. The band’s focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and their fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the then-popular, synthesiser-based dance-pop. Marr’s guitar work, using a Rickenbacker, had a jangle pop sound reminiscent of Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. Morrissey’s complex, literate lyrics combined themes about ordinary people with mordant humour.]

let all and nothing go beyond,
back into

the coffee-clogged drain the red, potted plant

unholy beach celebrated among
the dirt and scum of
all we won
all we won with patience

My Oh My! + Cat Dail + Mikal Shapiro + Instant Karma

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Universal / Dec. 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme]

2. Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Baby’s In The Void”
from: Panic Bloom / Rad Cult Records / May 4, 2018
[American experimental electronic band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have released 6 albums, 7 EPs, and 4 singles. The project is currently composed of frontman, singer, and songwriter Tobacco whose vocals are altered via a vocoder; keyboardist The Seven Fields of Aphelion, who often performs with a classic monosynth; drummer Iffernaut; guitarist Ryan Graveface; and bassist Pony Driver. Former members include keyboardist Father Hummingbird, who typically recorded with a polysynth, and Power Pill Fist on bass. Black Moth Super Rainbow’s music contains elements of psychedelia, folk, electronica, pop, and rock. Their distinctive sound is characterized by analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano and Novatron. A Graveface Records insert included inside the album Dandelion Gum describes them as such: “Deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania vocoders hum amongst the flowers and synths bubble under the leaf-strewn ground while flutes whistle in the wind and beats bounce to the soft drizzle of a warm acid rain. As the sun peeks out from between the clouds, the organic aural concoction of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts to glisten above the trees.”]

3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Melodys Actual Echo Chamber”
from: Don’t Get Lost / ‘a’ Recordings / Februry 24, 2017
[Musical project and band led by frontman Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in the early 1990s. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig!, and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behaviour of leader Newcombe. The Brian Jonestown Massacre have released seventeen albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, thirteen EPs, sixteen singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The band was invented by Anton Newcombe in San Francisco in the early 1990s, shortly after moving there from Newport Beach, CA, where he grew up playing in numerous bands. While there are many legends as to how Anton came up with the group’s name, it is undeniably a portmanteau on Brian Jones, the founder and guitarist of the popular English rock band The Rolling Stones, and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Anton’s reasoning behind this at the time is that there appeared to him to be a lot of overlap between cult leaders and rock stars, but since then the name has taken on a meaning of its own. The Brian Jonestown Massacre music spans multiple genres including psychedelia, electronica, folk music, blues, and experimental music. The group was founded by Newcombe, Matt Hollywood, Ricky Rene Maymi, Patrick Straczek and Travis Threlkel in the early 1990s in San Francisco. The BJM has famously undergone many personnel changes, with Anton Newcombe being the only consistent member. Current members: Joel Gion on tambourine (1994–1999, 2001, 2004–present). Ricky Maymi on guitar (formerly drums & bass) (1990–1993, 2003–present). Rob Campanella on keyboard, organ (and occasionally guitar). (2000–present). Dan Allaire on drums (2002–present. Collin Hegna on bass/guitar. (2004–present). Ryan Van Kriedt on guitar (2015–present).]

5. Wye Oak – “Lifer”
from: The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs / Merge Records / April 6, 2018
[5th studio album from indie rock duo from Baltimore, Maryland, composed of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitars and bass). Their sound has been described as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop” as well as indie folk. Wasner sings lead vocals and plays electric or acoustic guitar, while Stack plays both drums and keyboards, playing the drums with his feet and right hand, and the bass line with his left hand. The band was formed as Monarch in mid-2006,[1] before changing their name to Wye Oak, a reference to the former state tree of their home state of Maryland. They released their first album, If Children, independently in 2007 and subsequently signed to Merge Records in 2008. The label re-released If Children that year; a second album, The Knot, followed in 2009. Their third album, Civilian, was released in March 2011 by Merge in the US and City Slang in Europe, followed by Shriek in April 2014.[7] In 2016, they released the mini-album Tween, consisting of leftover material recorded between Civilian and Shriek.]

6. The Sea and Cake – “Any Day”
from: Any Day / Thrill Jockey Records / May 11, 2018
[11th album from Chicago based indie rock band formed in the mid 1990s. This is also their first new release in 6 years. The group formed in the mid-1990s from members of The Coctails (Archer Prewitt), Shrimp Boat (Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge), and Tortoise (John McEntire); the group’s name came from a willful reinterpretation (as the result of an accidental miscomprehension) of “The C in Cake”, a song by Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997’s The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire almost exclusively plays drums in The Sea and Cake. Current members include: Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire and each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake’s releases are largely paintings by member Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band’s 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design.]

7. Betse & Clarke – “Shelvin’ Rock”
from: River Still Rise / Independent / July 1, 2016
[Full-length debut album, from traditional and future folk duo, Betse & Clarke Betse Ellis on fiddles, violins, viola & vocals and Clarke Wyatt on banjos and cello. Recorded during the Winter-Spring of 2016. Produced by Clarke Wyatt and Betse Ellis. Recorded and mixed by Clarke Wyatt/ Final mix assistance from Chad Meise at Massive Sound. Traditional & future folk inspired by explorers Lewis & Clark showing how Betse & Clarke are trailblazers of sound & vision. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. The process of recording RSR took several months, beginning in early 2016. We made this recording at home.”]

10:42 – Interview with Johnny Hamil, Theresa Scott, and Chris Tady

Pamper the Madman

Johnny Hamil plays nationally and internationally and records music with Mr. Marco’s V7, GAV7D, the Malachy Papers, Mikal Shapiro, and Pamper the Madman. He teaches music, and bass. John graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelors of Music Education. He is also founder and administrator to the Kansas City Bass Workshop, a week-long intensive double bass festival now in its sixth year.

Chris Tady plays in the Cosmic Tady Brothers with his brother Matt Tady, and he also played in the band Dream Wolf.

Pamper The Madman was formed in 1990. Original members were: Theresa Scott, Chris Fugitt, Robbie Wagner, Scott Hassler. Marshall Strong replaced Scott Hassler and joined the band in 1992. Johnny Hamil replaced Marshall Strong and joined the band in 1995. Chris Tady filled in for Robbie Wagner (who now lives in South Korea) and joined the band in 2016 and according to Johnny Hamil, “it’s been magical.”

Johnny Hamil has been writing songs with Robbie Wagner over internet and he will travel to South Korea in July where we will perform the Eric band material and hopefully write some more stuff. Johnny Hamil writes,”Robbie is an incredible song writer and guitar player as well. He and Theresa were the main songwriters in the original group.

Johnny writes: “There were two bass players before me. One that only played the first few gigs. His name was Scott Hassler (he went on to lead the band American Sex Machine). He was awesome (like a Mike Watt type player). Marshall Strong took over and recorded on the demo cassette that some people still have. This was around 1992. Marshall Strong also played on The Pamper The Madman CD that was widely sold in Kansas City.”

Pamper The Madman’s song “I Want It” was included on the Kansas City Misery compilation, released in 1995 on Red Decibel out of Minneapolis.

Nick Spacek of The Pitch wrote on July 15, 2009, “The idea that a Kansas City music collection would come out on a Minneapolis record label makes more sense when you know that the comp was curated by Steve Tulipana, and Red Decibel put out two early Season to Risk 7″s, I’m Pogo the Clown and Mine Eyes. Kansas City Misery is as accurate a picture of the Kansas City scene in the ’90s as you’ll find. It’s loaded with pretty much every band that was making noise at the time: Season to Risk (of course), Giants Chair, Tenderloin, Boys Life, Shiner, Outhouse, Shallow, and even a rare live track from the Sin City Disciples. The only act that was big at the time that wasn’t on the comp would be Sacrifice Isaac. It was even carried at area Best Buys as part of a local distribution network that was attempting to get local releases into big box chains.”

Marshall Strong had to leave the band for personal reasons.

Johnny Hamil took over in 1995. Johnny recorded with the band for their EP, Muter, with original members: Chris Fugitt on drums, Theresa Schloegel on vocals, and Bobbie Wagner on guitar.

Pamper The Madman played their last gig in 1997 at The Hurricane

Johnny Hamil: “Theresa stopped playing because she wanted to raise her family. Now her kids are mostly grown and she needs to play and create again. It’s been amazing for me to create and watch her perform. She is an a rock star, singer, and performer. For me the most explosive performer I’ve worked with. That energy has been put away for too many years and it’s really special thing to hear and see.”

The Band had a series of reunions in 2014-2016

Johnny Hamil: “Theresa moved to Belize but is here in KC most of the time now. Her family has run the Woodyard (a wood company) for many generations. Her father sold Ollie Gates his wood for BBQ and continues to do so. They started their own bbq place there on Merriam drive by chance. This story may be too long to say here.”

“Woodstack is Theresa throwing a party to shine the light on our great Kcmusic scene. We hope to do this every year around Mother’s Day. 8 great local bands bringing in a big PA, Tables of artists set up to have local people showing off their talents there as well. Kid and Pet friendly. 1-10. Great food.”

Johnny continues: “I have one more story I want to tell you just so you know how much I love this band. I was in Wyco in 90 just graduated from Sumner. As you know the town was in full War and I was caught not wanting to leave (flee). I also was just trying to grapple with the idea of being a musician for life. To say it was a burden as a life choice is a good way to say it. For some reason I needed to play music 24 hrs a day. I really didn’t like a lot of the music that was happening. My metal heroes were all starting to suck. Two things happened to me at the time. I saw Sin City Disciples in the warehouse on wood weathers road and soon after I saw Pamper perform their first gig in front room of davy’s uptown. Both shows made me realize I were life changing for me. I was done apologizing for wanting to be an artist that didn’t want to become some kind of super star bullshit pipe dream.”

John says, “My message to Theresa the whole time she was not singing was that her music matters more than just the selfish aspects that making music entails.”

Woodstack 2018, this Saturday, May 12 at Woodyard BBQ, 3001 Merriam Lane in Kansas City, Kansas, with SopChoppy, The Sleazebeats, Betse & Clarke, Wyco Low Riders, Erica Joy, Claire Adams, and The Almighty Trouble Brothers.

Paper Magazine calls Cody Critcheloe, “an insanely talented master-of-all trades (he sings, paints and directs), has refused to play by the rules since he began, manufacturing full-fledged, DIY music-visual experiences. SSION has garnered a cult following, both as an artist and music video director, and now counts pop icons Robyn and Kylie Minogue among his fans.” The new SSION album, O is out Friday May 11 on DERO ARCADE.

Cody Critcheloe form the music video “Comeback.”

(Mark Interviewed Cody Critcheloe at KKFI 90.1 FM om April 26, 2018)

Cody Critcheloe – artist, painter, music maker, songwriter, singer, film maker, musician, Music Video director video , DJ, model, sex symbol, Queer hero, make up artist, photographer

Cody told Noisey at vice.com – “SSION is not really a band, I started it when I was in high school, in Kentucky, and then it sort of mutated throughout the years and right now I’m really the only remaining person. It’s spelled that way because, well, it was a joke—you know words like mission or passion or transgression. I was actually looking at a Mission of Burma record, and I thought, “Oh, I should just call the band SSION.” I thought it was really funny, like, if you shun something…I was like 16, so it was really clever to me. But I actually still like the way it looks! I like that no one knows how to pronounce it.”

SSION (pronounced “shun”) is a multifaceted creative project spearheaded by Cody Critcheloe, consisting of music, videos, art and live performance. It began as a punk band in Kentucky where Critcheloe is from, spent formative years in Kansas City, where it grew into the New York and Los Angeles based project it is today.

Now Toronto wrote: “SSION started during his high school years in Kentucky, SSION evolved into a collective of artists when he moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and began creating elaborate DIY music videos and stage shows with friends just as YouTube was becoming a thing. He gained a rep in the queer underground – he first performed in Toronto at the Pride edition of late promoter Will Munro’s beloved Vazaleen party 10 years ago – and fashion circles, but when Bent didn’t take off, he shifted focus to the visual side of SSION”

Growing up in Kentucky Cody had to drive 30 minutes to go see a movie. Cody talked about the Riot Grrrl movement being an influence in his musical formative years; Bikini Kill, Brat Mobile, Sleater-Kinney, Kathleen Hanna. Cody was also obsessed with the band Hole and Courtney Love.

Cody Critcheloe studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and SSION draws from a range of influences, including the punk spectacle of Iggy Pop and the dance-party new wave of the B-52’s as well as performance art and gay culture. in Kansas City SSION gained a reputation for amazing videos and live stage shows. Kansas City has remained a favorite location for Cody to shoot videos.

Cody Critcheloe

Cody currently lives in New York New York, he told The Lowdown (Jan. 4, 2012): “I officially moved to Brooklyn in June right after the SSION show at PS1. I spent the prior year living out of a suitcase and couch surfing, going back and forth between NYC, Kansas City and L.A. Then right before the show at PS1 I got evicted from my loft in KC, which was a bummer because it was such an amazing space — 3,000 square feet and my rent was $1,000 a month. Anyway, I had been wanting to change things up so I sold most of my possessions and moved to NYC within a week. It’s been a surprisingly easy transition mostly because I’ve stayed so busy making videos, working on music, playing shows and traveling. Maybe that still means I’m not really living anywhere.”

Cody told Paper (Dec. 14, 2017): “There were a couple of years where I thought I wouldn’t do music again, which is funny to me now. I think in some way I wanted to “grow up” and be taken seriously, whatever that means, and I thought being a director was a serious thing to do. I also got tired of looking at my face and hearing my voice and I just felt like I didn’t know what to say or how to say it — it all felt defeating. I never quit making music or writing songs, I just felt less urgency to put it out into the world. I think in the back of my head I knew it would eventually come back. Right now I can’t think of doing anything else. All I wanna do is SSION 24/7. It feels electric again.”

Cody told From Now Toronto: “It sounds cheesy, but turning 30, you get this idea of what you’re supposed to have accomplished,” he says. “The punk in me left for a bit. I was questioning: should I be a director? People don’t take my music seriously. I should be behind the scenes so I can be taken seriously. But then I was like wait, what? Who gives a shit? Why was I on that trip?”

New SSION Album O will released on DERO ARCADE May 11, 2018.

Now Toronto wrote: “Critcheloe worked on it with several collaborators including Nick Weiss (Teengirl Fantasy), Sam Mehran (Test Icicles) and MNDR. Part of what makes O so much fun is hearing all his queer and nerdy references in music that doesn’t separate punk or pop into silos, or force them into some sort of contrived hybrid format. The songs sound messy and loud, and also hooky and bouncy. Whether the mainstream embraces SSION this time around or not, you can tell he feels good about it.”

Cody told Now Toronto. “This record is a dream come true for me,” he says. “I just want to listen to it from beginning to end.”

The first SSION video from O features “Comeback” filmed in Kansas City with appearances from Beth Barden as a waitress at Chubby’s, and a scene shot at Mills Record Company.

Fader (November 20, 2017” writes, “SSION is back, back, back! A new short film, premiering on The FADER today, previews the first two songs from pop genius and video director Cody Critcheloe’s forthcoming new SSION album, “Big As I Can Dream” is a late-night lullaby, the kind you might sing to yourself in your head; a mantra set to music. “Comeback,” on the other hand, is a bright and ballsy singalong of a single that twists and turns from pop to industrial glam rock and back again.”

Cody Critcheloe

From Pitchfork: “Ssion, the pop music project of the painter and filmmaker Cody Critcheloe, is proudly campy and cult, skirting the lines between DIY punk, rock opera, and synth-pop. His last album, 2011’s Bent, was a frenzied trip through neon-lit sex clubs and nights spent cruising. “Comeback,” the first single from his forthcoming album O, doubles down on Ssion’s theatrical, in-your-face production. From its opening bars of bubbling, vintage synth chords and disco fingersnaps, “Comeback” is an upbeat romp of 1980s dance vibes. But the song avoids mere revivalism: Critcheloe and co-producer Nick Weiss (of Teengirl Fantasy) use tricks like extravagant mock-EDM beat drops, wittily deconstructing modern pop tropes. The lyrics are ironically vapid, mimicking bygone Top 40 love songs (“I always knew you’d come back to me/So come back, come back to me”) while Critcheloe’s singing is soaring and flamboyant, making for a performance that’s not just fun, but clever and cutting. A minute before it closes, the sweet instrumentals darken into crunchy noise, and Critcheloe launches into a short but devastating cover of Germs’ “Forming,” in a nod to his glam-punk roots. It’s a risky way to close out what is ostensibly a disco-pop hit, but Critcheloe has more than enough daring to pull it off.”

Critcheloe’s artwork graces the cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Fever to Tell (2003) and the video for Liars’ “There’s Always Room on the Broom” (2004). Besides Critcheloe, Ssion’s membership includes, among others, backup vocalists Taylor Painter-Wolfe and Shannon Michaels, who respectively create costumes and stage props for the act’s live shows. Critcheloe made his recording debut as Ssion in 1999 with Fucked into Oblivion, a self-released cassette/CD-R. I Don’t Want New Wave & I Don’t Want the Truth, another self-released CD-R, followed in 2001. In 2003 Ssion made their label debut, releasing the Minor Treat EP and the Opportunity Bless My Soul album on Version City Records. Next, following a self-released album, Glory Hound (2005), and EP, Street Jizz (2006), Ssion signed to Sleazetone Records. In 2008 the label released the Fools Gold album and the accompanying Clown remix EP. ~ Jason Birchmeier

11. Downtown Boys – “Violent Complicity”
from: Cost of Living / Sub Pop Records / August 11, 2018
[Downtown Boys are a punk band formed in 2011 in Providence, Rhode Island. Downtown Boys formed after What Cheer? Brigade tubaist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met vocalist Victoria Ruiz while working at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island. DeFrancesco famously quit the hotel by handing in his letter of resignation accompanied by his What Cheer? bandmates. The footage of the resignation went viral. In 2014, Downtown Boys released a 7″ single on Washington D.C.- based Sister Polygon Records to wide acclaim. Downtown Boys released second LP, Full Communism, on Don Giovanni Records on May 5, 2015. The album’s lead single, “Monstro”, drew critical attention from Pitchfork, Stereogum, and the broader music press. Rachel Brodsky of Spin wrote of the single: “Bravely combating, as their press release reads, “the prison-industrial complex, racism, queerphobia, capitalism, fascism, boredom, and all things people use to try to close our minds, eyes and hearts,” Downtown Boys do what their finest punk-rock forefathers did before them: challenge long-held ideas.” The group performed on news show Democracy Now! and was interviewed by host Amy Goodman. Rolling Stone featured the group and dubbed them “America’s Most Exciting Punk Band.” The New Yorker described the group’s live performances, noting that “[t]he tracks speed by with hardcore kineticism, but Ruiz’s lyrics squeeze your hand through the pit: she’s lucid and blunt, celebrating cops, traders, and any other impediment to justice that she can spot. There’s something distinctly post-punk about the Boys, … [i]t could be the saxophone, but it’s probably the spirit.” In 2015, Ruiz and DeFrancesco launched the online magazine Park Mag in collaboration with grassroots advocacy group Demand Progress. The site aims to feature underground and radical artists and connect fans to organizing work.]

Kansas City, MO – This week, volunteers are turning in hundreds of thousands of signatures to the Missouri Secretary of State’s office to place two citizen-driven initiatives on the November ballot – raising the statewide minimum wage to $12/hr by 2023 and reforming Missouri’s pitiful campaign financing and ethics laws. Coupled with last year’s drive to include on the ballot a citizen’s veto of the disastrous, freeloading “right-to-work” law the legislature passed in 2017, it is clear that working people are FED UP with corporate power running their government (and their lives), and they are FIGHTING BACK!

To celebrate the work of thousands of volunteers, union members and concerned citizens throughout the region, we are throwing a WORKERS’ REVIVAL FEST May 11 and 12 at the recordBar in Kansas City. The festival will celebrate work in all its forms and teach one another how to stand up to corporate power, support working people, and come together to demand higher pay and a better quality of life.

“This festival will help us change how we talk about workers’ rights,” said Justin Stein, from festival sponsor Missouri Jobs with Justice. “We can move away from the dangerous right-wing narrative that has eroded pay and working standards and toward the truth – that organizing is the only way to ensure working people are bargaining and not begging for better wages and benefits.”

Sponsored by Jobs with Justice, Black Site Records Cooperative, the Greater Kansas City AFL-CIO, ULLICO (formerly known as Union Labor Life Insurance Co), 90.1-FM KKFI, and Pipefitters Local 533, the WORKERS’ REVIVAL FEST will feature a wide range of music from national, regional and local bands including hip hop (Ebony Tusks and NuBlvckCity), Americana/roots (Austin Lucas), Latin/Trad. Central American (Baracutanga), indie rock (Scruffy & The Janitors, Lovergurl) and potent political punk rock and roll (Downtown Boys, Friendship Commanders and Red Kate).

3. Cymande – “Anthracite”
from: Second Time Round/ Cherry Red / 1973 [Reissued by Mr. Bongo 2018]
[Cymande (See-man-day) was a British funk group that released several albums in the early 1970s and reunited in 2014 with a European tour and a new album released in 2015. The group was formed by Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson in 1971 in London, England, along with musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent. The name Cymande is derived from a calypso word for dove, symbolising peace and love. The group developed a subtle and complex, deep funk style influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, American soul and UK rock of the time. By the mid-1970s the band members were going their separate ways, and the group disbanded in 1974. It was not until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Cymande’s original albums are still widely sought-after by DJs and funk aficionados. Perhaps the band’s best known recording is the soulful dancefloor filler called “Bra”, which was later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul and used as a breakbeat record by Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash. Cymande was accidentally discovered by English producer John Schroeder in a Soho, London club where they were rehearsing. He was there to see a rock band but the gig had been cancelled, and he stumbled upon these West Indian musicians. He soon signed the band and recorded their initial single “The Message.” The single was released by Janus Records, a division of Chess Records. The track reached #20 on the US Billboard R&B chart. This set the stage for Cymande’s self-titled release in 1972. Cymande traveled to New York after the success of the first album, and began a tour of the US with Al Green. They shared bills with Latin funk ensemble Mandrill. They played The Apollo, and played a gig on Soul Train. The band released 3 LPs for Janus. However, their final album, Promised Heights, was not released in the US, where Cymande had achieved their initial success. Promised Heights included “Brothers on the Slide”, “The Recluse” and “Promised Heights”. The tracks “Brothers on the Slide” and “Bra” also were staples of the rare groove scene that developed in London and NYC nightclubs during the 1980s.

5. King Britt & Sister Gertrude Morgan – “Living Bread”
from: King Britt Presents: Sister Gertrude Morgan / Ropeadope / 2005
[Reissued 2018]
[King Britt is a DJ, composer & record producer from Philadelphia. He is a 1986 graduate of Central High School (Philadelphia). In 1987 he started working at Tower Records, as a buyer for the singles/import section. His extensive knowledge of dance music made him an in demand buyer in the company. He went on to make many connections in the music community, bringing in records and new labels from all over the world. King attended Temple University. He produced King Britt Presents: Sister Gertrude Morgan in 2005. A recreation of self-proclaimed bride of christ, Sister Gertrude’s original Preservation Hall album gets new life. The record goes on to be included in the Michael Mann’s 2006 film Miami Vice, on the AdBusters compilation, Live Without Dead Time and the HBO television show True Blood. Sister Gertrude Morgan (April 7, 1900 – July 8, 1980) was a self-taught African American artist, musician, poet and preacher. Born in LaFayette, Alabama, she relocated to New Orleans in 1939, where she lived and worked until her death in 1980. Sister Morgan achieved critical acclaim during her lifetime for her folk art paintings. Her work has been included in many groundbreaking exhibitions of visionary and folk art from the 1970s onwards. In 1957 Sister Morgan received another revelation from God. Dreaming, she heard a voice that told her she was the Bride of Christ. She then discarded her black missionary attire in favor of an all-white ensemble made up of a nurses’ uniform, peaked nurses’ cap and matching white shoes. Music was another tool of Sister Morgan’s ministry. In the early 1970s, Let’s Make A Record was recorded in order to capture Morgan singing and playing her tambourine. In 2004 the original album was re-released on the Preservation Hall Recordings label. In 2005, Ropeadope released King Britt presents Sister Gertrude Morgan, which took the a cappella/tambourine recordings of Let’s Make A Record and added contemporary beat programming and instrumentation. The album received rave reviews and created a new, young audience for Sister Gertrude Morgan. The album artwork featured her paintings.]

6. Nina Simone – “I Can’t See Nobody (Daniel Y. Remix)”
from: Nina Simone Remixed & Reimagined / Legacy /2006 [Reissued-Legacy RCA 2008]
[Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933. She died April 21, 2003. She was was a singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Simone employed a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born in North Carolina, the sixth child of a preacher, Waymon aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown of Tryon, North Carolina, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Waymon then applied for a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was denied admission despite a well-received audition. Waymon became fully convinced this rejection had been entirely due to racial discrimination. In 2003, just days before her death, the Curtis Institute of Music bestowed on her an honorary degree. To make a living, Eunice Waymon changed her name to “Nina Simone”. The change related to her need to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play “the devil’s music” or “cocktail piano” at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She was told in the nightclub that she would have to sing to her own accompaniment, and this effectively launched her career as a jazz vocalist. Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue, and 1974. She had a hit in the United States in 1958 with “I Loves You, Porgy”. Simone’s musical style fused gospel and pop with classical music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied expressive, jazz-like singing in her contralto voice.]

7. Thievery Corporation – “Music to Make You Stagger”
from: Treasures from the Temple / Eighteen St – ESL / April 20, 2018
[10th album from Thievery Corporation was formed in the summer of 1995 at Washington D.C.’s Eighteenth Street Lounge. Rob Garza and Lounge co-owner Eric Hilton were drawn together over their mutual love of club life, as well as dub, bossa nova and jazz records. They decided to see what would come of mixing all these in a recording studio, and from this, in 1996 the duo started their Eighteenth Street Lounge Music record label. The duo drew attention with their first two 12-inch offerings, “Shaolin Satellite” and “2001: a Spliff Odyssey” and with their 1996 debut LP, Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi. The duo has publicly stated their fondness of the Brazilian culture in interviews and liner notes of their releases, especially of the 1960s Bossa Nova music movement. Some of their earlier recordings even had specific artwork paying homage to classic releases by bossa nova artists like João Gilberto (His self-titled 1973 album) or Tom Jobim (Stone Flower). They also released “Sounds From The Verve Hi-Fi” in 2001, a ‘best of’ compilation of 1960s–1970s material of Verve Records that includes Jazz, Bossa Nova and Latin Jazz works from artists like Cal Tjader, Wes Montgomery, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Luiz Bonfá, among others. Their 1997 debut album is also dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who died three years earlier.]

9. Bettye LaVette – “Person to Person”
from: Strange Angels: In Flight with Elmore James / Sylvan Songs / Jan. 26, 2018
[Bettye LaVette was born Betty Jo Haskins, on January 29, 1946. She is an American soul singer-songwriter who made her first record at sixteen, but achieved only intermittent fame until 2005, with her album I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise. Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel, and country music. LaVette was born in Muskegon, Michigan, and raised in Detroit. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she did not begin singing in the church, but in her parents’ living room, singing R&B and country and western music. She was signed by Johnnie Mae Matthews, a local record producer. In 1962, aged sixteen, she recorded a single, “My Man — He’s a Lovin’ Man”, with Matthews, which became a Top Ten R&B hit after Atlantic Records bought distribution rights. This led to a tour with rhythm and blues musicians Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, Barbara Lynn, and then-newcomer Otis Redding. She next hit the charts with “Let Me Down Easy” on Calla Records in 1965. This led to a brief stint with The James Brown Revue. After recording several singles for local Detroit labels, LaVette signed to the Silver Fox label in 1969. She cut a handful of tracks, including two Top 40 R&B hits: “He Made A Woman Out Of Me” and “Do Your Duty”. The Memphis studio musicians on these recordings have since become known as The Dixie Flyers. In 1972, she signed once again with Atlantic/Atco. She was sent to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama to record what was to be her first full-length album. Titled Child of the Seventies, it was produced by Brad Shapiro and featured the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, now known as The Swampers, but Atco chose not to issue the album. The mid 1970s saw a brief stint and two 45s with Epic, and in 1978 she released the disco smash on West End Records “Doin’ The Best That I Can”. In 1982, she was signed by her hometown label, Motown, and sent to Nashville to record. The resulting LP (her first album actually issued), titled Tell Me A Lie, was produced by Steve Buckingham. The first single, “Right In The Middle (Of Falling In Love)” hit the R&B Top 40. She briefly gave up recording for a six-year run in the Broadway smash Bubbling Brown Sugar, appearing alongside Honi Coles and Cab Calloway. After LaVette had played her own personal mono recordings of Child of the Seventies for Gilles Petard, a French soul music collector, he sought the master recordings at Atlantic, whose personnel had previously thought they had been lost in a fire some years back. In 1999, he finally discovered the masters and then licensed the album from Atlantic and released it in 2000 as Souvenirs on his Art and Soul label. At the same time, Let Me Down Easy — Live In Concert was issued by the Dutch Munich label. Both albums sparked a renewed interest in LaVette and in 2003, A Woman Like Me (produced by Dennis Walker) was released. The CD won the 2004 W. C. Handy Award for “Comeback Blues Album of the Year”. In an interview, LaVette identified A Woman Like Me as the first album in the second phase of her career and said her 2012 autobiography was named after the album.]

13. Matador! Soul Sounds – “Get Ready”
from: Get Ready / Color Red Records / March 12, 2018
[Matador! Soul Sounds is a band loosely based on the concept of Spanish bullfighting. A common misconception in America is that bullfighting is a feat of one man versus one bull—in reality, bullfighting is largely a team effort by a matador and his cuadrilla. Born from the vision of Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds) and Alan Evans (Soulive) their fierce cuadrilla consists of keyboardist Chris Spies and bassist Kevin Scott (Jimmy Herring) as the band’s “banderilleros”. Adding a feminine energy to the band are Adryon de León and Kimberly Dawson (Pimps of Joytime) on vocals. Combining the dynamism of each band leader, the music they have created is brand new, hard hitting and drenched with their shared musical passions – jazz, funk & soul. The band made their official World Debut at Live for Live Music’s Brooklyn Comes Alive 2017 and will be touring in the spring of 2018 behind their first full length EP “Get Ready”]

14. The New Mastersounds – “Chicago Girl”
from: Renewable Energy / One Note Records / April 13, 2018
[The New Mastersounds are a British four-piece jazz fusion and funk band from Leeds, England. Over the last 16 years, they have issued ten studio albums, two live dates, two remix collections, and a compilation album. In the late 1990s, guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts was running a club night in Leeds called “The Cooker.” When The Cooker moved into a new venue with a second floor in 1999, there was space and the opportunity to put a live band together to complement the DJ sets. Simon Allen and Roberts had played together in 1997 as The Mastersounds, with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds music scene, Pete Shand and Bob Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively, establishing The New Mastersounds. Their first rehearsal produced the release for Blow it Hard Records on two limited-edition 7″ singles in 2000.]

15. Grouper – “Parking Lot”
from: Grid of Points / Kranky / April 27, 2018
[Grouper is the solo project of US-American musician, artist and producer Liz Harris. She has been releasing material on her own label and other independent labels since 2005. Grouper released the critically acclaimed Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill in 2008, followed by five more records, including a two-part album, A I A, and the piano-led album Ruins. Her eleventh album, Grid Of Points was released on April 27, 2018. On March 8, 2018, the song Parking Lot from the forthcoming album was released via her BandCamp. She has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Xiu Xiu, Jesy Fortino (Mirrorring), Roy Montgomery, The Bug, Lawrence English (Slow Walkers), and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (Raum). Harris was born in Northern California and grew up around the San Francisco Bay area. She grew up in a Fourth Way commune there which was inspired by the philosophy of George Gurdjieff. The community was known as “The Group”, which would later serve as some inspiration for the moniker Grouper. According to Harris, the kids called each other and the parents ‘groupers’ sort of as a defiance. She says: “It was us making our own identities inside a pretty controlled environment, and sort of lashing back maybe… When I had to think of a name I felt annoyed at nothing sounding right. I wanted something that referenced me without referencing ‘Me.'” According to her, she “felt like the music was at its barest just a grouping of sounds, and I was just the grouper.”]

16. Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Breathe in, Breathe Out”
from: Bon Voyage / Fat Possum Records / June 16, 2018
[Melody’s Echo Chamber is the main project of French musician Melody Prochet. When Prochet’s previous project My Bee’s Garden supported Tame Impala on their European tour in 2010, Prochet collaborated with Kevin Parker to produce her new solo material as Melody’s Echo Chamber. The material was recorded in Parker’s makeshift studio in Perth, Australia and Prochet’s grandmother’s seaside home in the south of France. The self-titled debut album was released on Fat Possum Records in the Fall of 2012.]

17. Lou Johnson – “Rock Me Baby”
from: Sweet Southern Soul / Water Music Records / 1969
[Reissued by Run Out Groove Records 2018]
[Born 1941, in Brooklyn, NYC. He is a soul singer & pianist who was active as a recording artist in the 60s and early 70s. He started singing in gospel choirs in his teens, before studying music at Brooklyn College. He learned keyboards & percussion, forming a gospel group, the Zionettes, who recorded for Simpson Records and achieved some local success. Johnson then formed a secular group, the Coanjos, with Tresia Cleveland & Ann Gissendammer, recording “Dance the Boomerang” before Cleveland & Gissendanner left to become the Soul Sisters. In 1962, Johnson signed as a solo singer with Bigtop Records, run by the Hill & Range music publishing company in the Brill Building. There, he met the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, who wrote Johnson’s 1st single, “If I Never Get to Love You”. Neither that song nor his 2nd record, “You Better Let Him Go”, were hits, but his 3rd single, “Reach Out for Me”, also written by Bacharach & David and this time produced by Bacharach, reached # 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1963. However, as it rose up the charts, the record company collapsed, limiting the record’s success. Johnson signed to its successor label, Big Hill, and continued to record Bacharach & David songs. In 1964, his original version of “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me”, with backing vocals by Doris Troy, Dee Dee Warwick, and Cissy Houston, reached # 49 in the US charts. In the UK, a cover version by English singer Sandie Shaw rose to #1 on the British singles chart. Johnson also recorded the original versions of several other Bacharach & David songs that later proved to be bigger hits for other musicians. “Reach Out for Me”, “Message to Michael (Kentucky Bluebird)” (originally “A Message to Martha”), and “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me” were all American hits, also produced by Bacharach & David, for Dionne Warwick. Several of his records reached the Cashbox R&B Top 20 including “Always” peaking at # 12 and “Reach Out” at #15. In the UK, Johnson’s version of “A Message to Martha” was his biggest hit, reaching #36 in late 1964, but was outsold by Adam Faith’s cover version. In 1965, working with the team of Bill Giant, Bernie Baum & Florence Kaye on the reactivated Bigtop label, Johnson recorded a vocal version of Sidney Bechet’s instrumental hit of a few years earlier, “Petite Fleur”, entitled “A Time to Love, A Time to Cry”. He appeared on the UK TV program: Ready Steady Go!, but neither it nor its follow-ups, a version of the jazz standard “Anytime” and then a version of “Walk On By” co-produced by Allen Toussaint, were successful, and the record company’s choice of songs distanced him from his earlier audience. An album, called Anytime, went unreleased as the record company again collapsed. Johnson recorded two albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The first, Sweet Southern Soul, for the Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion, was produced by R&B producer, Jerry Wexler, at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals. Allen Toussaint produced the 2nd, With You in Mind, at his New Orleans studio for Stax’s Volt label, but neither proved successful. After moving to Orange County, CA, Johnson became a nightclub entertainer. He sometimes performed in a latter-day version of the Ink Spots.]

18. Sir Stanley – “I Believe”
from: Eccentric Soul: The Saru Label / Numero Group / March 23, 2018
[20th volume of our flagship Eccentric Soul series has all the boxes checked: Gun-toting, skip-tracing record producers, child stars, rip-offs, the “World’s Greatest Bail Bondsman,” swindles, soaring falsettos, and a dwindling rust-belt cityscape offering mere glimpses of hope before the record industry escaped for the coasts. Helmed by the O’Jays Bobby Massey, Saru was a creative vortex that pulled Cuyahoga County’s greatest talent in, making a strong case for Cleveland to contend with Detroit, Philly, and Memphis as America’s soul music’s capital. Deluxe compact disc includes 25 obscure and unknown sides from the Out of Sights, the Elements, Pandella Kelly, David Peoples, Sir Stanley, the Ponderosa Twins + 1, Ba-Roz, Bobby Dukes, and of course, the O’Jays.]

19. Miles Davis & John Coltrane – “Round Midnight (Live from Olympia Theatre, Paris)”
from: The Final Tour: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 6 / Columbia-Sony Legacy / March 23, 2018
[The latest entry in the award-winning Miles Davis Bootleg Series focuses on the final chapter in the landmark collaboration between Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane: their last live performances together, in Europe in the spring of 1960. Miles and Coltrane first collaborated in 1955, when Davis recruited the tenor saxophonist alongside pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. This “first great quintet” made their Columbia Records debut in 1957. Those early recordings showcased the stunning contrasts between Miles’ spacious, melodic lines and Trane’s cascading high-energy solos, famously described by the critic Ira Gilter in 1958 as “sheets of sound.” While the quintet disbanded shortly after the release of ‘Round About Midnight, Coltrane was back in Miles’ ensemble in early 1958. A year late, the Miles Davis Sextet (Davis, Coltrane, Chambers, saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, pianists Bill Evans or Wynton Kelly, and drummer Jimmy Cobb) recorded the historic Kind Of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. And for this final tour the rhythm section of Kelly, Chambers and Cobb backed Miles and Trane. These historic performances marked Miles and Trane’s last outing together and showcased both musicians’ incredible influence on the changing sound of jazz. The beautiful music they made together is presented here officially for the very first time. The 4CD set The Final Tour: The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 includes concerts recorded in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm.]
