2. The Beths – “Future Me Hates Me”
from: Future Me Hates Me / Carpark Records / August 10, 2018
[The Beths are from Auckland, New Zealand. Elizabeth Stokes on lead vocals & guitar, Jonathan Pearce on guitar & vocals, Benjamin Sinclair on bass & vocals, Ivan Luketina-Johnston on drums & vocals. Their debut album on Carpark Records. Elizabeth Stokes previously worked in a folk band. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.” All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y. Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.”]

For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. 00. Bob & Una Walkenhorst – “Time Goes Walking”
from: For Tomorrow / BAT Records /October 12, 2018
[25 year old Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Following the release of her debut album “Scars” in 2014, Una immediately had “new fans. . . coming out of the proverbial woodwork” (AXS). Paired with refreshingly raw vocals, Una’s heartfelt lyrics “will stop you in your tracks (at once beautiful and chilling),” wrote Gilded Palace Radio, as she weaves stories of genuine human experience. Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father can be challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. In January of 2018 Una Walkenhorst returned home to Kansas City from New Orleans. Over the past several years, Una and Bob had performed together at selected events, including Folk Alliance International. This year the father and daughter duo decided to record an album together, where they split the difference, taking turns as songwriters for the album’s songs, written individually, and recorded together, in clear beautiful harmonies, with that extra special shared musical DNA, that can be heard in the harmonies of The Carter Family or Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. Bob & Una Walkenhorst recently played the Rural Grit Happy Hour at The Brick, Monday, August 13.]

[Una Walkenhorst plays Songs For Justice: A Benefit for the Midwest Innocence Project, Monday, August 20, at 7:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, KCMO, with Instant Karma, and Blue False Indigo.]

5. Bernice – “Glue”
from: Puff: In the Air Without a Shape / Arts & Crafts / May 25, 2018
[Toronto-based experimental soul-pop group includes; robin dann, thom gill, dan fortin, felicity williams, and phil melanson. “Puff: In the air without a shape,” is that band’s airy, minimalist follow up to their 2017 kaleidoscopic maximalist EP. Puff was produced by Grammy Award-winner Shawn Everett). Reminiscent of recent records by Feist and Frank Ocean where soulful vocal melodies take the lead over sparse, airy arrangements, Bernice’s new album attempts to reproduce the playful intimacy of the band’s live show.]

6. Belle and Sebastian – “Fickle Season”
from: How To Solve Our Human Problems (Parts 1-3) / Merge / February 16, 2018
[A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/vocals) brought in the delicious ‘The Same Star’, which marries Belle and Sebastian’s melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). “We’d met Leo in February of 2016, and I’d say that meeting and the recording of ‘I’ll Be Your Pilot’ were the first tangible steps of this EP project,” Martin says. “We didn’t have a stack of songs to play him, but we liked him and he became a part of the plan from that point – and when I’d got to a point with ‘The Same Star’ where it just needed to be recorded, I thought it could benefit from having a producer to steer things, and fortunately we had a slot in the diary marked ‘Leo’ coming up. It’s not a song we’d labored over playing for months – it fell together quite quickly thanks in large part to Bob’s [Bobby Kildea, guitarist] enthusiasm and Stuart’s willingness to dismember an old song and repurpose the break, so that it wasn’t just the same three chords over and over and over.” There’s one big reason why 15 songs are coming out on three EPs, rather than one album. “We’d made a couple of LPs, Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister, within the space of six months,” Murdoch says, remembering the early days of the band’s career, and how that fed into their decision-making this time.- from amazon.com]

7. The Internet – “Roll (Burbank Funk)”
from: Hive Mind / Sony / July 20, 2018
[Los Angeles based band with: Syd Bennett, Matthew Martin, Patrick Paige II, Christopher Allan Smith and Steve Lacy. THE INTERNET began as two people – Syd and Matt. Syd taught herself how to record, engineer, and produce at age 15. She also sings, imbuing every song with a sultry, mellifluous, quiet power. Matt produces and plays synths. She’s now 23; he’s now 26. Like all post-modern relationships, the duo initially met on Myspace in 2008, only to meet in-person three years later. THE INTERNET have released two albums previously – 2011’s Purple Naked Ladies, and 2012’s Feel Good. THE INTERNET branched off from the Odd Future collective and started their own band in 2011. Syd had been writing music since she was small; she put this on hold to become OF’s DJ and producer, and picked her songs back up in 2011 to make her first full-length album with Matt. When they play live, THE INTERNET is a band – a six-person outfit whose youngest member is 17. They began playing as a full-band in order to tour behind Feel Good, and the band members all contributed their talents to THE INTERNET’s 2015 album EGO DEATH.]

8. Fantastic Negrito – “A Letter To Fear”
from: Please Don’t Be Dead / Blackball Universe – Cooking Vinyl / June 15, 2018
[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Haunt”
from: Wrong Creatures / Abstrat Dragon – Cobraside – BMG – Vagrant / January 12, 2018
[Rock band from San Francisco, California with: Peter Hayes (on vocals, guitar, harmonica; Robert Levon Been on vocals, bass, guitar; and Leah Shapiro on drums. (2001), Take Them On, On Your Own (2003), Howl (2005), Baby 81 (2007), The Effects of 333 (2008), Beat the Devil’s Tattoo (2010), Specter at the Feast (2013) and Wrong Creatures (2018), as well as several EPs, and live albums. The band was formed in 1998, originally called The Elements. After discovering that another band had the same name, the members changed the name to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, after Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One.]

10. Emily Otis – “drunk and anxious”
from: Poor Traits / Self Released / February 12, 2017
[Singer songriter Emily Otis is originally from Cedar Falls, Iowa who is now based in Kansas City. She calls herself. “mildly abrasive, musically eclectic and wistfully sarcastic.” “Poor Traits” is a audio-biographical work about my loveless experiences. The album is a collection of actual songs and found recordings. “Poor Traits” features the talents of Amy Wonderlin, Graham Howland, Michael Bowman, and George Patti. Recorded at Rama Studios Waterloo IA & “The White House” Cedar Falls IA. Mixed by Emily Otis. All songs written by Emily Otis except “Bad Romance”]

11. Super Elcados – “Tambourine Party”
from: Togetherness Is Always a Good Venture (Tambourine Party, Vol. 2) / EMI / July 6, 1976 Reissued on Mr. Bongo / 2018
[Official Mr Bongo reissue of the ultra-rare album by ‘Super Elcados’. A fusion of heavyweight Nigerian funk, soul & disco, originally released by EMI Nigeria in 1976. The ‘Super Elcados’ (and ’Elcados’ on other recordings) recorded three albums in the mid and late-70’s, this is their first. It was followed by ‘This World Is Full Of Injustice’ and ‘What Ever You Need’.]

12. The Souljazz Orchestra – “Lufunki”
from: Under Burning Skies / Strut Records / September 22, 2017
[The Souljazz Orchestra is a Canadian musical group based in Ottawa that has toured Canada, the United States and Europe. Their music is a fusion of soul, jazz, funk, Afrobeat and Latin styles. The band has six members: Pierre Chrétien on electric piano, clavinet, organ, guitar, bass, percussion, vocals; Marielle Rivard on percussion, vocals; Steve Patterson on tenor sax, percussion, vocals; Ray Murray on baritone sax, percussion, vocals; Zakari Frantz on alto sax, flute, percussion, vocals; Philippe Lafrenière on drums, percussion, vocals. The band signed to London-based Strut Records, a UK record label that focuses on dance music and afrobeat. Other musicians signed to Strut include “Ethio-Jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Motown guitarist Dennis Coffey and Ghanaian highlife singer Ebo Taylor, to name a few.” According to AllMusic, the band’s “overtly political 2006 single “Mista President,” off second album Freedom No Go Die (Do Right!), really increased their audience, [as it was] voted to the number nine spot in the 2006 Top 30 of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide programme. In 2012, the band completed two US tours that included stops in cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Chicago. Their Resistance album release tour of Europe, all October/November 2015, sees them among others in London, Liverpool, Zurich, Paris, Lyon, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Cologne, Vienna, Prague, Athens, Marseille.]

13. Hand Habits – “Actress”
from: Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void) / Woodsist / February 10, 2017
[“Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits, is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Upstate New York. She has been putting her time in on the road and in the studio over the past two years with pacific northwest band Mega Bog, and the Kevin Morby Band, making an impression on everyone she comes across with her natural charisma and uncharted talent as a multi-instrumentalist. But let Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) be her open invitation to the world to step inside and take a much deeper look into who Duffy actually is. Tracked in an Upstate New York living room, then finished in her current home in Los Angeles – it is appropriate that this album was recorded by Meg herself – for Meg, who has an acute ear for detail, has touched every corner, has seen every vision ’til its end. Because of this, Wildly Idle feels incredibly intimate, like a secret between her and the listener. It hits soft, like warm water, and before you know it it is all around you – a bath, and Meg’s whisper has made its way inside you. Like many bedroom-debuts before it (Microphones, Jessica Pratt, Little Wings, Grouper) let this be the first of many to come, for Meg has music in her touch – and this is only the beginning. But let us not look to the future now, but instead stand alongside her, our trust in her will, both humble before the void, with her first chorus as the mission statement; ‘hold you like a flower, hold you like an hour glass’.”- Kevin Morby”]

14. Vive la Void – “Red Rider”
from: Vive la Void / Sacred Bones / May 4, 2018
[Vive la Void is the new solo project of Sanae Yamada, co-founder and keyboard player of Moon Duo. Yamada wrote and recorded the self-titled debut album over roughly a two-year period, during windows of downtime in Moon Duo’s substantial touring and recording schedule. The dense, shape-shifting atmospheres of the seven songs grew out of late-night basement experiments in the layering of synthesizer tracks, a process that also led to meditations on the changeable nature of memory and perception. The result is an undulating blend of ethereal swirl, low end thrumming, and electric crackle, buoyed by Yamada’s understated but captivating vocal melodies and her striking lyrics. “The lyrics were a way of reckoning with my own memories and also of trying to process my reactions to the human situation,” Yamada explains. “I wanted the voice to have a kind of ghostly quality, to emerge from and recede back into the song, or to pass over it like weather. It’s one of many layers of sound, which are meant to blend together in such a way that on one listen you might hear one thing, and on another listen you might hear something else, so the music seems to change even as it stays the same.” Yamada has spent the last decade as a working musician, moving between semi-permanent home bases whenever she isn’t living in a tour van. In some ways, then, it feels inevitable that Vive la Void became a meditation on the strange rhythms of long-term touring, constant relocation, and the accompanying stream of brief but compelling encounters. It’s a testament to her empathy and creativity that these songs feel both specific and universal, familiar yet tantalizingly unknowable. “I feel like the movement of life in the sphere of consciousness is this process of trace-leaving,” Yamada reflects. “Wherever we go, whomever we interact with, whatever we touch, we leave and absorb these invisible traces, this residue of memory that lingers. I wanted the sonic textures of this record to explore that state of being there and not there, of something being with you but not tangible.”]

15. Ty Segall & White Fence – “Room Connector”
from: Joy / Drag City / July 20, 2018
[From Paste Magazine (July 18, 2018): Another month, another Ty Segall album. As noted in Paste earlier this year, the king of California psych/garage/punk-rock is arguably THEE most prolific major musician working right now, and the level of quality he achieves across his releases is incredibly high. The guy is quickly putting together an all-timer of a catalog. The newest entry in said catalog is Segall’s second collaborative album with veteran Los Angeles psych-pop experimenter White Fence, aka Tim Presley, formerly of The Nerve Agents and Darker My Love, and more recently Cate Le Bon’s partner in DRINKS. The two men joined forces in 2012 to produce a fun and fuzzed-out collection of songs called Hair, a “glorious mess of an album” we said way back when. Joy is a little more messy but almost as glorious. With track times mostly clocking in under 120 seconds, it’s a series of quick hits that are warped but relentlessly tuneful, like a Beatles LP that’s spent a blazing hot afternoon lying on a busy freeway. As songwriters, Segall and Presley complement each other nicely: Segall certainly knows his way around a catchy tune, but Presley’s a more natural melodicist, and while Presley definitely has his own rough edge, Segall’s a prodigious shredder. Wonder Twin Powers, activate! Form of…a fucked-up pop song! Highlights on Joy include “Body Behavior,” a pulsing acoustic rocker that snakes in the verses and sparkles in the chorus; “Other Way,” a dead-eyed noise excavation that feels like it fell off the Incesticide tree of influence; and “A Nod,” another rhythmic strummer that may just boast the prettiest melody on the album. There are other great songs here: the occasionally jazzy “Good Boy,” the beautiful and Neil Young-ish “My Friend,” and the propulsive “Do Your Hair,” which is powered by a bouncy bass line and uses its 95 seconds with impressive efficiency. The opposite is true for a couple of tracks that show up near the end of the album, “She Is Gold” and “Tommy’s Place,” two silly and/or stoney studio experiments that go nowhere, really. Joy would’ve been a tighter overall package if they’d been cut. With Segall, though, it’s worth hearing a couple of clunkers if it means he’ll keep making music at his preferred dizzying pace, because his hit-to-miss ratio is so high. And collaborating with Presley doesn’t dent that ratio. In fact, it brings out good things in both men. Here’s hoping their next album isn’t another six years away.

16. Ty Segall & White Fence – “Body Behavior”
from: Joy / Drag City / July 20, 2018

17. J.M. Black – “Lipstick (Shout)”
from: France chébran: French Boogie (1982 – 1989), Vol. 2 / Serendip Lab / May 25, 2018
[For fans of boogie in its Stateside form—think Kashif, Mtume, and the sprawling SOLAR Records oeuvre of producer Leon Sylvers III–Chébran Volume 2 offers both the comfort of the familiar and the thrill of the exotic. The brassy synthesizer tone on songs like “Heidi Bled Noum,” originally released by Shams Dinn in 1987, could just as easily have come out of Minneapolis circa 1983; and the Francophone flows on rap tracks like Phil Barney’s “Funk Rap,” JM Black’s “Lipstick,” and Alfio Scandurra’s “Qu’est Ce Qui Ne Va Pas?” demonstrate that even if the South Bronx was far away, the fruits of its culture had reached as far as Paris and Marseilles. But the songs collected here are more than just novel variations on American sounds; at their most intriguing, they reflect the unique cultural makeup of post-colonial France. Boogie, of course, grew out of the cross-pollinations between African American funk and European synthpop; the Gallic variety, with its roots in French immigrant communities, incorporated even further-flung influences from Africa and the Middle East. The aforementioned Dinn, born Mohammed Ben Bouchta, performs in Arabic, as do many of the other artists on the compilation; “Propriété Privée” singer Sammy Massamba hails from the Congo; the proto-electro “Ettika” was recorded by a group of Franco-Arab women of the same name. Chébran is rife with such intercontinental couplings and fascinating stylistic mutations, and the later chronological focus of this second volume opens up even more possibilities, with frequent forays into hip-hop and pure electronic music. It’s easy to picture Afro-French B-boys popping and locking to “Porquoi Tant de Haine,” the 1988 closing track by MC Joel Ferrati; or to Ethnie’s 1986 “De Chagrin en Chagrin,” which pairs a funky live hip-hop arrangement with an Arabic call-and-response chorus. Like most compilations of its ilk, Chébran’s sampling of international dance obscurities holds immediate appeal for DJs and other crate-digging connoisseurs of rare grooves. But there’s also an intrinsic value to hearing post-disco sounds defamiliarized and recontextualized in this way. A nebulous, short-lived genre even in its American form, boogie is often overlooked as a stopgap between disco proper and its sleeker, more mechanized offshoots, such as electro, house and techno. The hybrid formulations on Chébran Volume 2 offer a glimpse of the style’s unexploited possibilities, its adaptability into alternative cultures and contexts. More prosaically, but just as importantly, they also offer 17 monster grooves for lovers of synth-driven funk. – Zachary Hoskins Spectrum Culture, (June 20, 2018)]

11:32 – Interview with Una Walkenhorst

Una Walkenhorst photo by Mike Schwabauer

Following the release of her debut album “Scars” in 2014, Una Walkenhorst immediately had “new fans . . . coming out of the proverbial woodwork” (AXS). Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. Gilded Palace Radio wrote that Una’s heartfelt lyrics “will stop you in your tracks (at once beautiful and chilling)”. Una Walkenhorst has a new album, recorded with her father, (Bob Walkenhorst of The Rainmakers) called, For Tomorrow, that will be released on October 12. Bob & Una Walkenhorst play Rural Grit Happy Hour at The Brick, this coming Monday, August 13.

25 year old, Kansas City based singer/songwriter Una Walkenhorst joins us on Wednesday MidDay Medley to play a few songs live in our 90.1 FM Studios and talk with us about Songs For Justice: A Benefit for the Midwest Innocence Project, Monday, August 20, at 7:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, KCMO, with Instant Karma, and Blue False Indigo.

Una Walkenhorst Thanks for being with us on WMM

Una Walkenhorst recently played The Folly Theatre for 90.1 FM KKFI’s 30th Anniversary

Una Walkenhorst has lived in New Orleans, and Brooklyn, New York

After her 2014 debut release “Scars” Una Walkenhorst quit her job, got in her two-door Honda Civic and traveled across North America for a year and a half.

Una wanted to make it as a musician, on her own terms without help from her father.

Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter to dad Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had a string of national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s.

Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father was sometimes challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says.

Una has a new album, recorded with her father, (Bob Walkenhorst of The Rainmakers) called, For Tomorrow, that will be released on October 12.

Bob & Una Walkenhorst play Rural Grit Happy Hour at The Brick, this coming Monday, August 13.

18. Una Walkenhorst – “Pretty Face” (LIVE)

Una says that this is a love song to Eugene Oregon. This song may end up being on Una’s second solo record that will be released in 2019.

Una Walkenhorst plays Songs For Justice: A Benefit for the Midwest Innocence Project, Monday, August 20, at 7:00 PM at recordBar.

The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the investigation, litigation, and exoneration of wrongfully convicted men and women in our five-state region. Recent studies conservatively estimate that between 2% and 5% of all inmates in America are innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted, with some estimates reaching up to 7%. This means that somewhere between 2,000 and 7,000 moms, dads, sons, and daughters in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas are locked behind bars this very moment for crimes they did not commit.

After a conviction, it takes roughly seven to ten years for an innocent person to be exonerated, and the process is very expensive. As of May 2017, the 349 men and women across the country who have been exonerated through DNA served an average of 14 years in prison. The MIP staff, along with our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Next Gen Board, and volunteers, works diligently to give freedom back to those whom the legal system has failed. Thanks to our partnerships with law schools at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and Columbia and the University of Kansas, our presence in the classroom gives us the opportunity to teach the next generation of lawyers and investigators how to identify and prevent these injustices.

The Midwest Innocence Project was founded in 2001 through the UMKC School of Law and is part of the national Innocence Network. In addition to our university partnerships, we also work in conjunction with the Nebraska Innocence Project, and Iowa Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Division. Read more about our partners here. We are based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Songs For Justice: A Benefit for the Midwest Innocence Project, Monday, August 20, at 7:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, KCMO, with Instant Karma, and Blue False Indigo.

Una tells us the Blue False Indigo will have their own Album Release Show on September 8.

Una Walkenhorst is working on her second solo album to follow up on Scars (released in 2014). She says that her previous album was lighter, but for her second album she is older, and in a different place, and plans to focus on heavier topics including mental illness and depression.

Una told KCUR FM, “It can be very stigmatizing and people don’t want to talk about it a lot, but I feel that it’s very important thing to talk about. So quite few songs in my next album will touch upon mental illness, and what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression.”

(Part 2 of 4)

Wednesday MidDay Medley presents part-two, of our four-week special: The 117 Best Recordings of 2017. Based on playlists of this little ole radio show, we’ve compiled representative tracks from our favorite full-length and EP recordings of the year. We realize that these “Best of” lists can seem very subjective, however we ask that you please accept our list as a celebration of the year of music.

In 2017 we’ve played nearly 1000 different songs on the show, and from nearly 375 New & MidCoastal Releases. More than 200 of these releases were New MidCoastal Releases. Over 35 of the bands and artists in our “Best of” list have joined us live in our 90.1 FM studios. This past year we’ve interviewed nearly 200 guests. 70 of the representative recordings in our “Best of” list were MidCoastal Releases, produced by artists from here. It’s all good!

Tune into 90.1 FM, Wednesdays in December, on the 13th, 20th, and 27th. We’ll be packing 8-hours of radio with music that represent: The 117 of Best Recordings of 2017!

Special thanks to Noam Chomsky for graciously allowing use of his words in “Black & White World.” Black & White World is dedicated to those with the courage to speak truth to power. All Songs Written & Arranged By: Salar Rajabnik / BMI / 2017. Salar Rajabnik is a product of time spent in lots of seemingly contrasting places. Born in the Atlanta area, he was immersed in the world of southern American roots music. The strong Persian cultural influence of his father, an Iranian immigrant, was just as evident at a young age. This was strengthened by time ispent living in Iran. From the beginning this unexpected amalgamation of cultures began to create the foundation that would define him as a musician and person. A move to Kansas City at the age of 12 prompted Salar to pick up his first instrument, the bass guitar. Between the clubs, streets, festivals, churches, basements, bars, arenas, schools, & studios, playing bass, drums, or guitar, he took every opportunity to play that he could. While his influences seem conflicting on the surface level the underlying and unifying principles and themes are strong. Whether he was dancing to Persian music with his family in Iran, learning Motown basslines in his room while his friends listened to boy bands, or jamming in the historic 18th & Vine district with jazz veterans till sunrise, for Salar it’s always been about playing with heart, soul, and honesty. Salar has set out to venerate those who have and continue to respect the gift of music and it’s important role in life, regardless of any classification or style. After years of playing in bands and as a live & studio musician Salar relocated to Nashville, Tennessee & formed a backing band in 2014 & released a debut EP, both dubbed “Moon Age”. Leaving Nashville as a homebase & the Moon Age moniker behind, Salar recently relocated back to Kansas City to release his full length album.]

9. (80.) Mount Eerie– “Real Death”
from: A Crow Looked At Me / P.W. Elverum & Sun / March 24, 2017
[8th studio album from Mount Eerie, the musical project of Anacortes, Washington-based songwriter and producer Phil Elverum. Elverum (formerly of The Microphones) is the principal member of the band, but has collaborated with many other musicians on his records and in live performances. Most of Mount Eerie’s releases have been issued on Elverum’s label P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd., and feature inventive and highly detailed packaging with his own artwork. Elverum married Canadian artist and musician Geneviève Gosselin in 2003 shortly after meeting her. The two dated long-distance briefly before Geneviève moved to Washington to live with Phil. She recorded under the names Woelv and Ô Paon. Besides occasionally singing on each other’s records and playing in one another’s backing bands live, the couple did not collaborate artistically. The two did not want either of their artistic outputs to interfere with the other’s so they kept relatively quiet about their marriage. Occasionally one would mention that he or she was married, but not say who they were married to. In 2015, Geneviève was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer following the birth of the couple’s first child. After running out of funds to pay for Geneviève’s cancer treatments the two turned to the world and asked for their support through way of a GoFundMe page; an unexpected decision from the usually reclusive couple. On July 10, 2016, Geneviève died in the company of her husband and parents. The album’s release comes in wake of the passing of Elverum’s wife, Geneviève Castrée. On January 5, 2017, Elverum announced that he will “re-enter the world,” go on tour, and release a new album. The first single from A Crow Looked at Me, “Real Death”, was released on P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd.’s SoundCloud page on January 18, 2017, to widespread acclaim, netting the “Best New Track” distinction from Pitchfork. Paste wrote that in “Real Death”, “[t]he music gives Elverum all the room he needs to not so much sing, but document.”]

11. (78.) The Como Mamas – “Move Upstairs”
from: Move Upstairs / Daptone Records / May 19, 2017
[2nd full length album from one of the The newer addition to the Daptone Family. tThe Como Mamas are three lifelong Gospel singers from the small town of Como Mississippi. On their debut album, the critically acclaimed album ‘Get an Understanding’ from 2013, there are only three instruments – The powerful, raspy voice of Ester Mae Smith, the deep soothing voice of Angela Taylor, and the energetic, spirited vocals of Della Daniels. The harmonies they create are so powerful, musical accompaniment is not missed. In December of 2015, The Como Mamas took their first trip from their home in Como, Mississippi up to Harlem, New York to crush the Apollo Theater as part of the Daptone Super Soul Revue. Taking full advantage of their presence in town, the Daptone crew brought Ester Mae Wilbourn, Della Daniels and Angelia Taylor into the House of Soul the week after the show to join forces for the first time with the musicians and studio that has defined their label’s sound. Jimmy Hill, Thomas Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, and Bosco Mann, all stalwarts of the Daptone stable, came together as “The Glorifiers Band,” to put down a churning musical foundation for these amazing singers. The results are some of the heaviest tracks that Daptone has cut to date.]

12. (77.) Nick Siegel – “Slum By The Sea”
from: Awake from The Golden State / Nick Siegel / August 25, 2017
[2nd single from the debut EP from Nick Siegel who writes: “I write aggressive piano rock music. I strike the 88 keys because one of them must be the key to your heart (oh the charm!). I grew up playing music in Chicago and moved to Kansas City in 2010 when I joined The Casket Lottery. Now venturing on my own, I’m excited to release a new record that will knock your clothes off. Book me, like me, come out and see me and I’ll introduce you to a fine mix of fast fingers, great hair and awkward banter. I’m Nick Siegel. I’m the piano rock you need in your life.”]

from: Soft Spots / Tiny Engines / May 19, 2017
[Adult Mom began as the solo project of Stephanie Knipe in a Purchase College dorm room in 2012. Honesty and intimacy form as Knipe writes clever pop songs that offer a glimpse into the journey of a gender-weird queer navigating through heartache, trauma and subsequent growth. Soft Spots, the project’s sophomore LP, is an exploration into the physical and emotional acts of opening up, the vulnerability that produces love, and then ache. Knipe shares with us their process of learning how to cradle and understand their own softness without finality, a story without an end.]

14. (75.) Sky Smeed – “Lunker Bass”
from: Lunker Bass / Sky Smeed / February 1, 2017
[Sky Smeed was born and raised outside of Chanute, Kansas, in an old, one-room schoolhouse his parents bought and turned into a home in the early 1970s. Last year, he sold the country home he built by hand and migrated to Lawrence, Kansas, a place that has provided a non-stop supply of creativity, community and culture, and began settling in to an old fixer-upper on the north side of the Kaw River. To date, Smeed has self-released five full-length albums: Flying High (2002), The Front Steps (2004), Mill River (2006), Sky Smeed (2012) and Drive All Night (2015). His sixth album, Lunker Bass (released February 1, 2017), was recorded and produced at The Ninth Ward Pickin’ Parlor in Lawrence by none other than award-winning folk duo Truckstop Honeymoon (Mike & Katie West).]

15. (74.) Mavis Staples – “If All I Was Was Black”
from: If All I Was Was Black / Anti / November 17, 2017
[16th studio solo album from gospel R&B singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. She has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth”. Livin’ on a High Note was produced by M. Ward the album features songs written specifically for Staples by Nick Cave, Justin Vernon, tUnE-yArds, Neko Case, Aloe Blacc, and others. Mavis!, the first feature documentary about Staples and the Staple Singers, directed by Jessica Edwards, had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2015. Mavis! was screened in theaters and on HBO in February 2016. Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down. The album was written and produced by Jeff Tweedy. Staples said the album “brings us all together as a people. That’s what I hope to do. You can’t stop me. You can’t break me. I’m too loving. These songs are going to change the world.” Tweedy described the message of the album: “I’ve always thought of art as a political statement in and of itself-that it was enough to be on the side of creation and not destruction. But there is something that feels complicit at this moment in time about not facing what is happening in this country head on.]

16. (73.) Joon Moon – “Tiger (Radio Edit)”
from: Moonshine Corner / Kwaiden Records / September 29, 2017
[First full length album from band formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. This follows the June 2017 release of their EP Tiger, their April 2016 EP, Call Me, and their October 2015 EP Chess. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retromodern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an onimous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love in a movement towards emancipation.]

from: Postcards / Lustre Records / March 10, 2017
[Postcards features a number of Brown’s musical friends, including Calexico, Bon Iver, Mark Knopfler and the Pines. She compiled the album by writing simple acoustic demos of what would become the album’s songs, sending them to the musicians that make up Postcards‘ roster of guests, and having those artists finish the tracks. Brown and her collaborators never worked in the same room, which lent the album its distance-implying title. Released on Brown’s new, in her words, “underground label” Lustre Records. Pieta Brown was born in 1973 in Iowa City, Iowa. Her early upbringing was in Iowa. There, Brown was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, singer songwriter Greg Brown. Brown spent her childhood living in 17 different residences between Iowa and Alabama. While living with her mother in Alabama, Brown began writing poetry and composing instrumental songs on piano. As a musician and singer-songwriter she has released five albums and four EPs. Collaborator Bo Ramsey produced her 2002 debut record, Pieta Brown and co-produced her 2005 album In the Cool, which was named one of the year’s best by Amazon. [Chicano band from East Los Angeles, California. Their music fuses spoken word, folk music, with traditional Son Jarocho, Afro-Mexican music and zapateado dancing. The band started out as students of the Eastside Café, a community space in El Sereno, LA, where they took Son Jarocho classes. Since forming, they have shared the stage with artists such as, Caifanes, Lila Downs, Juanes, Ozomatli, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Their namesake derives from the organization where they took classes. To honor women, they feminized their group name by naming themselves Las Cafeteras, rather than Los Cafeteros. Las Cafeteras’ songs have themes and references that range from the Civil Rights Movement, United Farm Workers, DREAM Act, immigration reform to female homicides in Ciudad Juárez. Their song, “La Bamba Rebelde”, a remake of The traditional Mexican song from the state of Veracruz “La Bamba”, denotes their Chicano pride. 22. (67.) Pageant Boys – “Last Rites”
from: Shadowboxing EP / The Record Machine / May 19, 2017
[On what was originally slated to be a short trip to Istanbul, Alex Sheppard started recording music with his girlfriend’s laptop and a bluetooth headphone mic. None of Sheppard’s previous musical efforts incorporated electronics in a major way; “It was born of necessity,” says Sheppard. The songs on his new EP, Shadowboxing, came out of those original sessions. The songs are a sensual and almost effervescent approach that combine R&B elements with electronic and processed instrumentation. While in Istanbul, Sheppard established a routine in collaborating with a close friend and poet. He said they developed a fairly specific daily routine for working on music, with the intent of finishing songs, regardless of their quality. “I would wake up at 8 in the morning and start the song and get the chord structure. And then at 10, he would wake up and I would show him what I had. I’d make breakfast, and then I’d show him the melody I wanted for the vocal line. He’d go down and start writing the lyrics, we’d eat breakfast, and he’d have the lyrics written after we got done with breakfast. At 1, I’d start recording the vocals. It was a good schedule.” Sheppard has been writing and recording for the last decade even though he is just in 20’s. Before Sheppard started performing and recording as Pageant Boys he released several albums as Alexandre. Shadowboxing is the maturation of Sheppard’s artistic vision and introduction to a larger audience.] [Pageant Boys played Crossroads Music Fest, Sat, Sept. 9 .]

Marling received a scholarship to attend Leighton Park School, a private Quaker school in Reading, Berkshire. During her secondary school years she felt uneasy around other people and was afraid of death. Marling dated Noah and the Whale singer/guitarist Charlie Fink briefly before the pair separated in 2008. She also dated Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons until late 2010. She moved to Silver Lake in Los Angeles, California in 2013, before relocating back to London in December 2014. In September 2013, Marling explained: “I am a solitary person but I love people, I’m not a misanthrope. I like the idea of speaking only when it’s strictly necessary. The closest I ever feel to people is in shared experience. I’m still exploring that, I don’t know where it’s going to lead me.]

13. Jim Nabors -“It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”
from: Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. / Sony / 1965
[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.”Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

14. Paul Lynde, Maureen Stapleton, Dick Van Dyke, Bryan Russell – “Kids”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Bye Bye Birdy / RCA – BMG / 1960
[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

18. Lou Reed and John Cale – “Small Town”
from: Songs For Drella / Sire – Warner Bros. / 1990
[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. Bowie hired them as performers and backup singers for his appearance on Saturday Night Live which aired on December 15, 1979. The band performed “TVC 15”, “The Man Who Sold the World”, and “Boys Keep Swinging”. During the performance of “TVC 15”, Nomi and Arias dragged around a large prop pink poodle with a television screen in its mouth. Nomi was so impressed with the plastic quasi-tuxedo suit that Bowie wore during “The Man Who Sold the World” that he commissioned one to be made for himself. Nomi can be seen wearing the suit on the cover of his self-titled album, as well as during anumber of his music videos. Nomi wore his variant of the outfit, in monochromatic black-and-white with spandex and makeup to match, until the last few months of his life. 10:36 – Tribute to Larry Kramer

The day Larry Kramer hugged me. The day before the National March on Washington, 1993. It was outside the Capitol Building where Larry Kramer had just passionately delivered a speech to a crowd of LGBT Activists. ACT UP had just organized us in wrapping a giant red ribbon around the Capitol Building. After the building was wrapped, the ribbon broke into hundreds of little pieces. I attached my piece to my ACT UP KC button.

The 67th Annual Tony Awards, will present the Isabelle Stevenson Award to Larry Kramer.

If you believe theatre can change the world, it may be because you know of Larry Kramer.

American playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist, Larry Kramer was born June 25, 1935. He began his career rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists and earned an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of “Women in Love” in 1969.

In 1980 and 1981 Larry Kramer began to witness many his friends becoming sick and dying from the spread of an unknown disease, that became known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which has become the largest private organization to assist people living with AIDS in the world.

Larry Kramer co-founded the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, a direct action, multi-faceted, protest organization credited with changing public health policy and perception of people living with AIDS, HIV and AIDS-related diseases.

Based on his own struggles, in the early years of the AIDS crisis, Larry Kramer wrote about his frustrations with our government’s lethargic response, to do anything to help. Larry Kramer was also frustrated by the gay community itself, criticizing gay men who he felt were in denial of what was killing them. From all of this came Larry Kramer’s nearly auto-biographical play, “The Normal Heart” that focused on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, a gay Jewish-American founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Ned was known and disliked for his loud, angry, public confrontations, in contrast to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner.

The Normal Heart was produced by Joesph Papp at The PublicTheater in NYC in 1985, in a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run that starred Brad Davis in the role of Ned Weeks.

In Kansas City, no professional theatre would do this show. The Normal Heart was produced independently in the Summer of 1991, as the very first production of Actors & Artists Against AIDS, Directed by John McCrite, staged with a cast of professional actors, in the basement of Unity Temple on The Plaza, the production earned critical acclaim and $10,000.00 in ticket sales from 8 performances, all to benefit The Good Samaritan Project.

Later, the play was revived in Los Angeles and London and again Off-Broadway in 2004. The Normal Heart made it’s Broadway debut, in April 2011, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. This year The Normal Heart will launch a national tour. Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Alec Baldwin are joining Mark Ruffalo in the upcoming film of THE NORMAL HEART. Larry Kramer will adapt his script for the movie, and Ryan Murphy, best known for creating GLEE, is set to direct the film.

10:30 – Interview with Rusty Sneary and Forrest Attaway

The Living Room Theatre’s 3rd season opened last week with Eric Bogosian’s “Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll”. starring resident artist, Forrest Attaway, who plays 12 different characters, in 12 different scenes, directed by 12 different directors. The show continues performances this week, Thursdays October 4 through Sunday October 7, at The Living Room, 1818 McGee, KCMO. For more info: thelivingroomkc.com Here to tell us even more about the show is The Living Room founder and Artistic Director, Rusty Sneary and Artist and Actor Forrest Attaway.

Robert Trussell of The Kansas City Star wrote that “the rarefied universe of Eric Bogosian is full of truth-tellers. (Some of them — the homeless, the mentally ill, the guys serving time — tell the truth because they have nothing to lose. But others — fast-talking lawyers, rabid consumers — reveal the truth in spite of themselves. And some articulate the truth virtually by accident.)”

Forrest Attaway plays 12 characters, in 12 scenes, with 12 directors.

Robert Trussell’s review talked about… “the clear articulation of Bogosian’s principal theme: the human and planetary cost of mindless consumerism. (Each of these characters is obsessed to some degree with money.) ”

Trussell went on to write: “You might think that a 1990 piece filled with social commentary might be showing its age by now. (Maybe it does in small ways, but Bogosian’s themes remain remarkably — and depressingly — relevant. Yes, we really are poisoning the earth with chemicals. We really are poisoning ourselves at fast-food restaurants. We really do blind ourselves with drugs and alcohol. And increasingly we have consigned our fates to a global network of interactive computer systems.)”

11:13 – Interview with Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley

A Kansas City native, Albert Bickley has been writing, recording and performing original music for years. Dave Tanner, a Canadian who calls Parkville, MO, home, has played bass in numerous bands through the years from rock and heavy metal to folk and punk. He also currently plays in Liverpool: A Tribute to The Beatles. Together Albert Bickley and Dave Tanner formed The Depth and The Whisper in late 2010 as a vehicle to share new songs and ideas. In 2011 they released their debut EP of six songs, titled “One Steady Breath” that was created with musician, producer and recording engineer – John Velghe who captured the band’s sound at his at Guttersnipe Recording Co. during the spring of 2011. Since then, the band has performed in numerous KC venues and has collaborated with many of Kansas City’s finest musicians. The Depth and The Whisper play Record Bar, Oct. 17, with Frontier Ruckus.

Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley talked about how they met and eventually recorded with John Velghe.

Go-Go Ray (drums), Troy Van Horn (lead guitar), John Velghe (keyboard/Rhodes) and Elaine McMilian (backing vocals) round out the band’s sound in the studio and on stage.

Songs on the debut release are framed with openness and honestly that draw the listener to be part of the story. From their first collaborations and all the way through the recording process, it was clear that the songs would come together quickly and maintain an organic feel. Each track aims big and bright just like the opening track, “New York” encourages.

“We do what we feel is right for the song. Nothing more, nothing less,” Albert said during production. That has since become a mantra of sorts for the players on stage and in the studio.

The song “Be Together” will be used in a short film being produced by people at Hallmark, They have heard that Sara Swenson is also on the soundtrack.

Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley are currently laying groundwork for a new recording to follow last year’s EP “One Steady Breath” – you plan to hit the studio this fall for what could be an early 2013 release.

With a growing batch of follow-up songs being considered for the next recording, they want to keep the organic feel captured intuitively by producer John Velghe.

Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley played a song that they’re considering using on their new recording.
