She has provided back-up vocals with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones song “Gimme Shelter.” Her early career included performances with Ray Charles as one of The Raelettes. She has sang with Neil Young’s debut album 1968, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” and for Tom Jones, Joe Cocker and Carole King. She also originated the role of the Acid Queen in the original 1972 London production of The Who’s Tommy.] [Merry is currently featured in Twenty Feet From Stardom, a documentary about background singers and their contributions to the music industry. In December of 2011, David Burchfield released “The Beginning,” which was recorded here in Kansas City with Mike Crawford. David Burchfield joined us in February of 2012 to play live on the show with members of his band The Great Stop. Leslie Hammer, Devon Russell & Seth Jenkins. David joined us today to discuss his new recording with The Great Stop called: “Perseids” that will be released this week. When we talked with David over a year ago, he had recently moved back to the Kansas City area after living in Golden, Colorado and working with a solar energy company. David spent years working in environmental education and youth development; helping migrant farmworkers; teaching, hiking, and clearing trails at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico; working with justice issues and children in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

David is now returning to do post graduate work in Boulder, Colorado, in August.

When David as on our show, back in February of 2012, The Great Stop played the song “Perseids” live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Perseids is, the stream of debris cloud that stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 130-year orbit. Most of the dust in the cloud today is around a thousand years old.

23 year old dynamo, Mat Shoare played live on our Jan 23rd WMM. His full length solo recording, “Domestic Partnership” was released December 11, 2012, on Golden Sound Records. Mat has released two EPs with his band The Empty Spaces. All of the music is available at Golden Sound Records, an independent, Kansas City based record label Mat founded with his friends Jerad Tomasino and Ross Brown. Mat Shoare has just been nominated for a Pitch Music Award for Best Singer-Songwriter, and his band The Empty Spaces has also been nominated for Best Garage Band.

Mat Shoare prefers the homemade sound and feel in his recordings, The Golden Sound Records website reports that most parts of his solo album were recorded by Mat in multiple bedrooms, basements, and offices from winter 2011 through the fall of 2012.

The Golden Sound Records website desribes “Domestic Partnership” as a recollection of love, loss, and love again. Then loss…and so forth.”

Ross Brown plays drums on Mat’s songs and also with his band The Empty Spaces, your band that has release two EPs including 2012’s “Party Line” which was part of our 112 Best Recordings of 2012.

[Indie rock band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984 by husband and wife: Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals), and Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals). Since 1992, the lineup has included James McNew (bass, vocals). This is their 13th full-length album. It was produced by John McEntire, instead of Roger Moutenot, who had produced all their albums since 1993’s “Painful.” Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintains a strong cult following. The band is renowned for its encyclopedic repertoire of cover songs both in live performance and on record.]

2. David Bowie – “Where Are We Now?”

[We were all surprised to hear the single Bowie released on his birthday, Jan. 8. His 1st new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborating w/ longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

10:15 – Interview with Michelle Bacon & Terra Peal

Drew Black and Dirty Electric is a four-piece group that is the brainchild of Drew Black (formerly of The Belated), who wrote and released his solo album “Wanderlust” in early 2012. Soon after, Black enlisted bassist Terra Peal (of The Quivers), drummer Michelle Bacon (of Deco Auto, and Dolls on Fire) and multi-instrumentalist Zach Hodson (of Dolls on Fire) to bring Drew’s recorded songs to life on stage, as a full throttle rock and roll machine. The band will play the recordBar, Saturday, January 26, with She’s A Keeper, Molly Picture Club, and Antennas Up for the first of 5 MidCoast Takeover Fundraisers.

In the coming weeks Wednesday MidDay Medley will feature the music from KC area bands participating in The MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows. Proceeds from these shows benefit the Midwest Music Foundation’s SXSW MidCoast Takeover, the annual showcase, that this year will showcase over 40 bands from the KC area, over 4 days, March 13 – 16, at the Shangri-La, on East 6th Street, in Austin, Texas.

The Deli KC Editor, Michelle Bacon, who is also a dedicated Midwest Music Foundation volunteer, and member of the bands: Deco Auto, Dolls on Fire, along with Terra Peal who is part of the band The Quivers joined us to give us the details on this year’s MidCoast Takeover.

Ross plays drums on Domestic Partnership and also with Mat’s band The Empty Spaces. The band has released two EPs including 2012’s “Party Line” which was part of Wednesday MidDay Medley’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012. Mat’s solo work is very different for his work with the band, even though his band evolved out of the recording of your first full length solo recording.

8. David Seume– “All I Have To Give”

[Last month, Arthur Jack Seume, the son of local singer-songwriter David Seume and his wife, Kelly, died, just five weeks shy of his due date. An unknown knot in the umbilical cord had tightened its grip. David Seume wrote about this tragic loss on his blog davidsueme.com where he very eloquently expressed his despair, and his questions, and his attempt, through ART, to “making sense of the senseless.” With his wife Kelly they are starting a memorial fund in Arthur’s name. David has recorded a new song, “All I Have to Give,” which can be downloaded, in support of Arthur. All proceeds go to the Arthur Jack Seume Memorial Fund. David’s friends Konnor Ervin and Kyle Rausch of The ACB’s sang backing vocals, and Mike Nolte of Ghosty, mixed and mastered the track. The link is: davidseume.com.]

10. The Dead Girls – “Never Erased”

[The Dead Girls (formerly Dead Girls Ruin Everything) was formed in 2004 from the ashes of Ultimate Fakebook and Podstar, two bands that were staples of the Lawrence and KC power-pop sound. Guitarists / singers JoJo Longbottom and Cameron Hawk, of Podstar, combine their dual-guitar attack and vocal harmonies with the rhythmic assault of drummer Eric Melin and bassist Nick Colby, of Ultimate Fakebook. The band’s new record was Produced by Chris Cosgrove who produced their 2010 album “Out Of Earshot.”]

11. Spencer Ward – “One Life”

The Broadcast premiere of Spencer Ward’s new song “One Life.” Spencer Ward grew up in the KC Area. He graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School, and received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Science and Holistic Health. In 2011 he released 4 song EP and is currently working on a new recording. Spencer is also an actor, and he recently worked in two new local films the will be making their premieres this year. Spencer also spent 13 years as an amatuer and professional boxer, where he had over 30 fights. We talked with Spencer about performing in Nashville, and his life growing up in a boxing and theatre family, and his new music.

“One Life” is one Spencer’s new songs that was just recently recorded and produced by David Lichtenauer.

Spencer grew up taking piano lessons, but didn’t really find his passion for music until he was taking audio and engineering and recording classes at Johnson County Community College.

One of his teachers, Mike Moreland, helped to encourage him to record and create new songs.

Spencer grew up in and musical family. His parents met while studying Theatre at Tarkio and performed in Plays and Musical and worked as commercial actors in print and television. Spencer’s sister is a performer too.

Spencer also grew up in the world of boxing. His father was an undefeated boxer, who and is now a trainer, and manager of The Underground Boxing Company in Overland Park, Kansas. Spencer’s brother Keaton is also a boxer.

12. Spencer Ward – “The Bridge” (LIVE)

Spencer has recently worked as an actor in two new short films produced here in the KC area.

A short student film called “Infected,” written and directed by Taylre Jones.

Spencer also appears in and the new short film “Martini Lunch,” written and directed by Nathan Kincaid, a Kansas City native who studied film in San Francisco and England. Nathan was recently selected as a Robert Altman Emerging Filmmaker in KC. This film will be shown in film festivals in Kansas City and all around the world. Spencer plays the main character of Charlie, a young busboy working in one of Kansas City’s most upscale restaurants in the 1950’s. Charlie serves the many wealthy and influential patrons, and overhears brief snippets of their conversations. Much of the film was shot in Kansas City’d Savoy Restaurant and also features former Mayor of Kansas City, and State Senator, Dr. Charles B. Wheeler, in a key role.

Spencer also works in the world of healthy food and healthy living. Spencer works at Whole Foods and talked about how Whole foods has opened the doors for him to do shows in Las Vegas, and Nashville.

Spencer also has performed Gavin DeGraw’s club in Nashville and at famous Bluebird Cafe.

Spencer considers Brett Dennen to be one of his biggest inspirations.

Wednesday MidDay Medley presents part-3, of our 4-week special: The 112 Best Recordings of 2012. Based on the playlists of Wednesday MidDay Medley we’ll feature representative tracks from our favorite recordings. In 2012 we’ve played hundreds of New & Local Releases, we’ve presented dozens of LIVE in-studio performances from area performers, and we’ve interviewed over 150 local and national guests. 70% of the recordings on our list were locally produced. It’s all good!

1. (56.) Thee Oh Sees – “Flood’s New Light”
from: Putrifiers II / In The Red Records / September 11, 2012
[14th album from San Francisco based band that began as a way for John Dwyer to release his instrumental, experimental home recordings, and over the course of several albums it evolved into a full band.]

2. (55.) Ross Brown – “Isn’t That Better”
from: Small Victories / Golden Sound Records / October 16, 2012
[We first met Ross Brown on our February 15, WMM. He is co founder of Golden Sound Records, lead singer of the band Fullbloods, and drummer for The Empty Spaces. Ross started playing trumpet in junior high school band and continued through high school playing euphonium, guitar and bass in jazz band, and singing in choir. Music classes were all I took from “public school” during high school. He started writing music when he picked up guitar around 12 years old. Ross went to DeSoto high school for a year and home-schooled the rest. After that I took a two-year audio engineering course at BRC Audio Productions, where he met Jerad Tomasino and everyone in Fullbloods.]

3. (54.) The Empty Spaces – “Holidays Are Nice and Warm”
from: Party Line / Golden Sound Records / July 24, 2012
[KC based band formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album The Empty Spaces in 2010. Mat Shoare is a founding member of Everyday/Everynight and a founding partner in Golden Sound Records. Mat Shoare, along w/ Jerad Tomasina, Ross Brown, & Evan Ashby, joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley, on July 4, to talk about the Crossroads Summer Block Party hosted by Golden Sound Records & Mildred’s. On December 11, just after we published our list of The 112 Best Recording of 2012, Mat released his new solo recording: “Domestic Partnership.” Mat will be with us LIVE on WMM in 5 weeks on Jan. 23, 2013.]

4. (53.) Lee Fields and The Expressions – “You’re The Kind Of Girl”
from: Faithful Man / Truth & Soul Records / March 13, 2012
[Since the late sixties, the North Carolina native Lee Fields has amassed a prolific catalog of albums and has toured and played with such legends as Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip- Huggers, O.V Wright, Darrell Banks, and Little Royal. With a career spanning 43 years, releases on twelve different record labels, and having toured the world over with his raucous-yet- tender voice, itʼs mind-blowing that the music heʼs making today with Brooklynʼs own Truth & Soul Records is the best of his career.]

5. (52.) David George & A Crooked Mile – “Going Underground”
from: Going Underground [EP] / Independent / June 21, 2012
[The follow up to David’s 2010 “Love/Life.” EP contains 5 songs pulled from a 15 song session leading to a full length that will be released tnext year. Featured on “Cold Rain” is Danielle and Jacob Prestidge of The Blackbird Revue. Danielle is also the featured vocalist on “Lift Me Up.” All songs written by David George]

6. (51.) The Sexy Accident – “Love Doesn’t Get Old”
from: Ninja Ninja Fight Darth Vader / Independent / April 21, 2012
[The Sexy Accident’s new full length release, “Ninja Ninja Fight Darth Vader” is available through their website and a local independent record stores. The band’s music video for their song “What We’d Do” is available for download at music.sexyaccident.com. All of the song’s proceeds go to charity. Earlier in the year th band released the 3-song EP “You’re Not Alone.”The Sexy Accident joined us LIVE on WMM on May 2.]

7. (50.) Victor & Penny – “A Smile Will Go A Long Long Way”
from: Side By Side / V & P Productions / November 24, 2012
[2nd release from Erin McGrane & Jeff Freling who joined us LIVE on Wednesday MidDay Medley on Nov. 22 to discuss “Side by Side,” inspired by their experiences on the road. Jeff, originally from Kansas City, calls Chicago home most of the time where he performs regularly with Blue Man Group, Tributosaurus, Mar Caribe, the Tom Waits tribute band B1G T1ME, and has performed alongside Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices). He began furiously studying the guitar at the age of 10 when he first heard Jimmy Page’s guitar solo on “Whole Lotta Love” and has considered himself a guitar geek ever since. In the late 80s and early 90s Jeff was the guitarist and co-songwriter for two of KCs favorite bands: The Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. He studied at the Conservatory at UMKC and at the Berklee School of music in Boston. Erin has been an active performing artist in the KC arts and music scene for many years. Erin is a film, theater and commercial actress; a musician and songwriter; and one of the co-hosts of the new TV program CINEMAKC. Most notably, Erin appeared in the Emmy-winning web series THE UNREAL HOUSEWIVES OF KANSAS CITY and in the Oscar-nominated film, UP IN THE AIR alongside George Clooney. Look for Erin thethriller feature film NAILBITER. As Ruby Falls, she fronts the cabaret act Alacartoona.]

8. (49.) David Byrne & St. Vincent – “Who”
from: Love This Giant / 4AD / September 11, 2012
[Made in collaboration between Byrne and St. Vincent aka Annie Clark who began working together in late 2009, using a writing and promotion process that Byrne had previously used on his 2008 collaboration with Brian Eno on Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. The two artists first met in 2009 at a Radio City Music Hall benefit concert for the AIDS/HIV charity Dark Was the Night. The collaboration stemmed from their second meeting, at the New York bookstore Housing Works, where Björk and Dirty Projectors were performing. A concert organizer suggested that Byrne and Clark try a similar collaboration. Their work was initially slated just for a single live performance, but Clark suggested adding brass to their line-up and the two realized they could write original music around horns. The musicians composed lyrics in person and via e-mail, which resulted in an entire album’s worth of material. The performers enlisted a variety of brass musicians to augment their songwriting and have embarked on a tour to promote the album.

9. (48.) The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Illuminomi”
from Aufheben / ‘a’ Records / April 30, 2012
[13th studio album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, released on band leader Anton Newcombe’s A Records label. The album was available for free streaming prior to its release, and was recorded in Berlin at Anton Newcombe’s studio and the East German Radio Station “Studio East”. The title of the album comes from a German word. It has several meanings, such as “to lift up” or “to abolish.” In philosophy, it is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact.]

10. (47.) Capybara – “Neighbor Crimes”
from: Dave Drusky / The Record Machine / February 7, 2012
[Lifelong friends Mark Harrison, Jared Horne, Darin Seal, and Joel Wrolstad, formed Capybara in January, of 2009. This is their follow up to their debut: “Try Brother.” The band is now on a permanent hiatus.]

11. (46.) Cate Le Bon – “What is Worse”
from: Cyrk II / The Control Group / August 20, 2012
[Based in Cardiff, Wales, she sings in both English and Welsh. Singled out by critics for her dark lyrical content, and “haunting voice.” She released one of our favorite records of 2012 so far Cate Le Bon has announced the new release of a five-song follow-up to the 10-track CYRK. According to her label, CYRK II serves as an “older sister” to the original release, “bearing songs of a more starkly confessional nature.”]

12. (45.) The Sea and Cake – “Pacific”
from: Runner / Thrill Jockey / September 18, 2012
[10th album from Chicago indie band formed in the early 1990s from members of The Coctails, Shrimp Boat, and Tortoise. Sam Prekop (vocals, guitar), Archer Prewitt (guitar, piano, vocals), John McEntire (percussion, drums, some synthesizer), Eric Claridge (bass, synthesizer).]

13. (44.) Two Headed Cow – “13”
from: Zen Again / Saunders Street Records / December 15, 2012
[Tod Davis and Bj McArthur moved to Kansas City from Pensacola, Florida several years ago. Once in KC they changed their band’s name to: Two Headed Cow, for a more regional appeal. Their new release “Zen Again” if the band’s newest release since 2008’s “Safe As Milk.” The new release also features Glen Hockemeier on Drums. and Matt Waddell on Bass. Two Headed Cow performed LIVE on Wednesday MidDay Medley, on November 14.]

14. (43.) Cat Power – “Real Life”
from: Sun / Matador / September 4, 2012
[9th studio album by Chan Marshall, also known by her stage name, Cat Power. Her first album of all-original material since 2006’s The Greatest. The album was issued in a variety of formats, including a limited edition deluxe LP containing a 7″ vinyl of bonus tracks. Sun is being included on many end of year “Best of” lists.]

from: Banga / Columbia Records a Division of Sony / June 1, 2012
[Lead single off the 11th studio album by Poet / Biographer / Musician / Artist / Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee: Patti Smith. Recorded throughout 2011 at New York’s Electric Lady Studios and Hoboken’s Hobo Recorders, Banga was produced by Smith, Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty and collaborator Lenny Kaye. with guest musicians: Tom Verlaine of Television and Smith’s own children, Jackson and Jesse Paris.]

18. (39.) Sam Billen – “Secrets Of The Universe”
from: Places / Primary Colors Collective / September 15, 2012
[From Lawrence, KS, In 2009, Sam Billen released, Headphones & Cellphones w/ The Record Machine. It was his first his first solo record in 5 years since leaving Northern Records who also released his decade-long band, The Billions, who disbanded in 2008. After the break up of the Billions, Sam took some time to focus on making his own music and starting a family. Sam works full time at KU, and started a new business, Primary Colors Music. Sam joined us live on WMM on Nov 22 where Sam played LIVE in our 90.1 FM studios.]

[KC’s very own: Krystle Warren, a Paseo Arts Academy Graduate was signed to a French label and has been touring Europe opening for Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle’s new album came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the double vinyl release.]

This album also includes 4 songs featuring KC’s own Betse Ellis (of The Wilders). Recorded and mixed in KC at Markosa Studios, with Mark Thies. Fullbloods is a rock and roll band pulling inspiration from all corners and time periods of the genre. Formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album by the same name The Empty Spaces have been interpreting Shoare’s song writing since early 2010. Eventually the three piece began to collaborate more with song arrangements and stylistic choices yielding a kind of “retro-punk rock” that is fronted with an energetic, yelping vocal style.

SOFT REEDS – 10:15 – 11:00

Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks’ The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the ’77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, while embracing the richness of American indie rock. Originally started in 2007 as Grimes’ post-TGR solo project, Soft Reeds became a full band in 2009, and released the critically acclaimed ‘Soft Reeds are Bastards’ in 2010.

[Loretta Webb, 2nd of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. She married Oliver Vanetta “Doo” Lynn, in 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. By the time Loretta was 18, The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray, and in her early 20s she had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, including “The Pill,” with lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill.]

What happens when your band’s new EP is being recorded in the home studio of your drummer and halfway through the recording process your drummer moves to a new house, with an irritable neighbor living next door? The B’Dina’s, joined us to answer this question and to talk about their upcoming show at Czar, with The Empty Spaces, and I Hate You Just Kidding, this Saturday Night, February. 25, to celebrate the release of their new EP “Morning Party,” Meredith McGrade and Tess Jehle both had to work, but Katy Guillen, Peter Lawless, and Katelyn Boone, joined us live.

“Morning Party,” is the follow-up to their 2010 debut “Homemade Rock & Roll.”

The new six-song disc is the product of a fraught year of home recording. Among the obstacles was a particularly irritable neighbor.

Drummer Tess Jehle explains: “We recorded the first half at my old house, but then I moved and immediately started getting noise complaints from next door.” Between delaying work on the EP to construct soundproof walls within their laundry-room-cum-rehearsal-space and paying strict attention to every detail of the recording and mixing process.

The B’Dinas feel that Morning Party is a long time coming. But of the effort, guitarist Katy Guillen says, “All the time we took was worth it. I’m very proud of this record, and I think it represents the band at its best.”

Morning Party draws on many genres, beginning w/ the slightly-surreal pop rager “Five-Day Weekend!” and ending w/ the saxophone-driven funky blues of “Mystery Face.”

The B’Dinas show off guitars both searing & sensitive, vocals ranging from gritty & distorted to floating choral arrangements, & lyrical themes from bittersweet to political.

The B’Dinas are already recording their next album.

David Burchfield recently moved back to the Kansas City area after living in Golden, Colorado and working with a solar energy company. David has spent the last 4 years of his life working in environmental education and youth development; helping migrant farmworkers; teaching, hiking, and clearing trails at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico; working with justice issues and children in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Last December David released his new recording, “The Beginning,” which was recorded here in Kansas City with Mike Crawford . David Burchfield joined us to talk about his music and he brought along some of his friends: Leslie Hammer, Devon Russell & Seth Jenkins who played live in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Chris Haghirian is a 12 year veteran of The Kansas City Star. Chris helped launch INK in 2008. Chris is one of the primary organizers of The Middle of The Map Festival, Midcoast cares: A Benefit for Joplin, and the past three years of MidCoast Takeover SXSW. Chris is also a regular contributor to The Mailbox, a weekly podcast radio show produced and hosted by Michael Byars that is available Midwest Music Foundation’s website: midwestmusicfound.org where you’ll also find links to MidCoast Takeover.

The third annual MidCoast Takeover, March 16th and 17th, at Shangri-La in Austin, TX.

MidCoast Takeover will showcase bands from Kansas City, Lawrence, and the Midwest region on the national stage at South by Southwest.

“The Midcoast Takeover Benefit shows are created to raise funds specifically for the expense of two full days (and night) of the showcase in Austin, Texas, at The SXSW Music Festival. Renting a venue in a prime area is expensive. Unlike a lot of other showcases, the Kansas City organizers invest in top notch production for sound and lights, which are transported to Austin and back home. In addition, there are advertising costs, website design and maintenance, printing costs for posters and handbills. The showcase in Austin is free to the public, so organisers raise all the funds in advance. Everyone involved works to ensure that our Kansas City bands have the best production and best support that organisers can manage.”

MidCoast Takeover was born from The Midwest Music Foundation a not-for-profit organization that has the amazing mission of supporting and helping to create a safety net for our amazing, hard working, local musical artists. The Midwest Music Foundation has given birth to many annual events to raise funds and awareness for the Kansas City Music Scene. MidCoast Takeover is rooted this amazing objective.

Chris and Mark talked about some of the other principle organizers of MidCoast Takeover: Rhonda Lyne, Christopher Meck, Abigail Henderson, Sondra Freeman, and Amy Farrand. These people have donated hours and hours of time and work, to help make our Kansas City music community stronger.

Ross Brown grew up in West rural Olathe. His band Fullbloods will be in concert this Sat, Feb 18, at 10:00 PM at The Brick, 1727 MCGEE, w/ Richard the Lionhearted from Columbia and Millions of Boys from Omaha, w/ an acoustic set by Jerad Tomasino.

Jerad Tomasino moved around a lot growing up but spent some of his high school years living in Omaha. Jerad has released solo recordings and his also a member of the critically acclaimed band, Everyday/Everynight. Jerad and Ross join us today to talk about Golden Sound Records, their involvement in the Midcoast Takeover 2012, The Middle of The Map Festival and the Kansas City Music Scene.

Ross grew up in west rural Olathe.

Jerad came from a Military family, and moved around alot, but claims Omaha as a hometown.

Ross Brown started playing trumpet in junior high school band and continued through high school playing euphonium, guitar and bass in jazz band, and singing in choir. Music classes were all he took from “public school” during high school. He started writing music when he picked up guitar around 12 years old. He picked up bass and drums shortly afterwards to accompany myself on recordings. Singing wasn’t really his thing until after high school.

Jerad told us that he was one of those kids who always sang along to the radio in the car. He picked up the guitar around 7 years old. He took up acting for most of his childhood, but spent countless hours with his ears full of radio and his eyes glued to MTV. He was addicted to studying pop music. Singing was his primary form of music making until Christmas of 2000 when he got his first electric guitar. He wrote his first riff/song, “Stuff” when he was 11 and played around until he moved to Omaha. At 13 he performed his first original song, “Chocolate Warfare”, at a local talent show and got hooked. He ditched acting and set his sights on music.

Ross Brown went to DeSoto high school for a year and home-schooled the rest. After that he took a two-year audio engineering course at BRC Audio Productions, where he met Jerad and everyone in his band Fullbloods.

Jerad Tomasino went to Bellevue West, in Bellevue, Nebraska for 2 years, then he attended Lee’s Summit West for 2 years. After high school Jerad started attending classes at BRC Audio Productions where he double majored in Music Ed. and Music Therapy at The Conservatory. He had a mental breakdown, changed majors and started EverydayEverynight. Jerad will graduate from the University of Missouri at Kansas City this year majoring in Music Composition with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

Jerad met Ross at BRC, and connected with Mat Shoare and Evan Ashby while in choir at The Conservatory at UMKC. Mat Shoare is also a founding member of Everyday/Everynight and a founding partner in Golden Sound Records.

Why start a record label?

Ross Brown told us about how he and Jerad and Mat, wanted a platform for their own music and an organized body to support and encourage others to continue making music. Golden Sound Records keeps them involved in, and accountable to their craft.

Jerad told us about how music is always about more than yourself. Even the music that we personally create (as a necessity) must bounce off of other people to truly resonate. So, for Jerad, the idea of a label is an extension of his artistic output; fostering ideas and projects into realization. It makes him a stronger musician and more fulfilled person to touch and be touched by the records and artists he works with. On a logistical front, this label centralizes their efforts, and gives context to the art that is deemed as cool and lets Golden Sound Records present it in a specific way.

The 111 Best Recordings of 2011 are based on the playlists of Wednesday MidDay Medley. In 2011 we’ve featured hundreds of New & Local Releases, we’ve featured dozens of LIVE, in-studio performances from area musicians, and we’ve interviewed over 150 local and national artists. Over 40 recordings on our list are from the KC & Lawrence area. All December we’ve been playing nearly 8-hours of music that represent: The 111 of Best Recordings of 2011!

1. (27.) Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – “Morning Thought”
from: It’s A Corporate World / Warner Brothers / June 3, 2011
[A project started by Detroit based Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott, recording in a basement without the benefit of expensive microphones or big-name producers.]

2. (26.) The Low Anthem – “Boeing 737”
from: Smart Flesh / Nonesuch / February 21, 2011
[The follow up to their critically acclaimed “Oh My God, Charlie Darwin” where the three original band members-Jocie Adams, Ben Knox Miller, and Jeff Prystowsky took over a Block Island cabin in the dead of winter. To record Smart Flesh, the group expanded to a quartet with the addition of drummer Mat Davidson and they found a former pasta factory in Central Falls, Rhode Island, a cavernous loft space that became crucial to the shape of the album. Says vocalist Miller, “We knew right away when we stepped into the factory that the space was really the main instrument for the whole record. The resonance was chilling. We were able to experiment with new recording techniques to capture the sound at different distances. Mics 100-200 feet away caught the sound barreling across the room.” Additional tracks were recorded in a garage that had previously been home to a reptile breeder, another unconventional studio space that the quartet dubbed “the gator pit.”]

[From San Francisco. It began as an outlet for John Dwyer to release his instrumental, experimental home recordings, and over the course of several albums evolved into a full band. We first played The Oh Sees on Sept. 28.]

[8th album from former leader of legendary New Zealand band, the Clean.]

6. (22.) Tom Waits – “Chicago”
from: Bad As Me / Anti Records / October 21, 2011,
[17th studio album and Waits’ first album consisting completely of new material in seven years since Real Gone (2004). Waits’ label, ANTI-, recently agreed on a distribution deal with Warner Music Group allowing them to release the album internationally. This marks Waits’ first release through the Warner organization since Heartattack and Vine (1980). Upon its release, Bad As Me received widespread critical acclaim.]

7. (21.) Austra –“Lose It”
from: Feel It Break / Domino Records / May 17, 2011
[Co-founder and lead singer, and songwriter Katie Stelmanis, draws upon her classical and operatic upbringing and mixes it up with drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf to create what Amazon calls, “a stark, danceable masterpiece suitable for both ritual incantations and clubs.”]

8. (20.) Victor & Penny – “Exactly Like You”
from: Antique Pop / V & P Productions / December 9, 2011
[Victor & Penny performed LIVE on our Sept. 7 Wednesday MidDay Medley. This Chicago / KC based duo is Jeff Freling of the Chicago Blue Man Group; and Erin McGrane of the cabaret group Alacartoona. Antique Pop which contains 8 vintage songs plus 2 original songs written by Jeff Freling and a song written by Barclay Martin.]

9. (19.) Pieta Brown – “Mercury”
from: Mercury / Red House / September 27, 2011
[Born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1973, she is the daughter of two preachers’ kids. Her early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace or running water. There, Brown was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, singer songwriter Greg Brown. Brown spent her childhood living in 17 different residences between Iowa and Alabama. While living with her mother in Alabama, Brown began writing poetry and composing instrumental songs on piano. She has released four critically acclaimed albums and three EPs in the last decade. She has performed with artists such as Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Amos Lee and Calexico. Collaborator Bo Ramsey produced her 2002 debut record, Pieta Brown and co-produced her 2005 album In the Cool which was named one of the year’s best by Amazon. Pieta and Bo are now married.]

[9th full-length album from the band formed in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1993. C’mon was recorded in an old church in Duluth, MN and mixed in an apartment in Hollywood, CA.]

[12th studio album from Wire, formed in London in 1976 by Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar), and Robert Gotobed (drums). They were originally associated with the punk rock scene. Wire’s debut album, Pink Flag from 1977, is one of my all-time favorite recordings.]

[Debut EP from a KC based band formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album The Empty Spaces in 2010. The three piece began to collaborate more with song arrangements and came up with a kind of “retro-punk rock” that is fronted by an energetic, yelping vocal style. One writer described their sound as “charming fuzzed-out slacker rock.” The band has been touring to support the release. Mat Shoare is also a founding member of Everyday/Everynight and a founding partner in Golden Sound Records.]

[Born in Concord, California in 1977. Famed DJ John Peel called his music “unobtrusively brilliant.” Cass McCombs has received widespread critical acclaim. He has led a nomadic existence for most of his adult life, moving from one city to the next, living in cars, on couches and at campsites. McCombs spent time developing his music bouncing between New York City, San Francisco, the Pacific Northwest, England and Baltimore. McCombs has stated that his tombstone will read “Home At Last.”]

[3rd studio album by electronic band Cut Copy, formed in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. It was originally a solo-project of Dan Whitford, a DJ and graphic designer. Zonoscope has also been nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 54th Grammy Awards.]

[Accomplished songwriter, co-founder of the influential indie roots label Red House, and former musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program,. While recording what was to be his next album lighting hit the studio where he was working, and Greg Brown lost the recordings. Greg, used the experience to turn inward and write more songs that comprise his 24th album: Freak Flag, the title track is all that remains of the lost original album. Greg wrote ten new songs, recording them at Memphis, Tennessee’s legendary Ardent Studios. Produced by Bo Ramsey, the album also includes a cover of Brown’s wife Iris Dement’s ”Let the Mystery Be” and Brown’s daughter Pieta’s song ”Remember the Sun.” Greg Brown played LIVE on our Nov. 9 WMM.]

The band includes three of the members who sing and write songs. Golden Sound Records is a new local recording company who also release the music of Oriole Post. The Fullbloods, and The Empty Spaces, as well as the solo works of Jerad Colton Tomasina and Mat Shoare.]

[from Tulsa, Ok, their 20th album, Race Riot Suite, written by Chris Combs for the current quartet of Brian Haas on piano & keyboards, Josh Raymer on drums, Chris Combs on lap steel and Jeff Harshbarger on upright bass. For this recording the band is accompanied by a horn section consisting of Sex Mob’s Steven Bernstein, Jeff Coffin (of Dave Matthews and Bela Fleck fame), Mark Southerland (Snuff Jazz, Malachy Papers), Peter Apfelbaum, and former JFJO member Matt Leland. The album is dedicated to the victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, the largest race riot in United States history. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey join us LIVE in the studio on March 30. ]
