About Mark Manning

For 19 years Mark Manning has served as Coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, an Initiative of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12. Each year Mark works with 1000 to 2000 students, between K through 8th grades, with organic, "raised bed" gardens built directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools and four Elementary Schools in the inner city of the Kansas City, Kansas school district. Mark conducts over 440 workshops annually in classrooms at these schools. He started the project under the guidance of Marcia Pomeroy, in 1999, after working in a literacy program. The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens has been financially supported through grants from The Kauffman Foundation, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The project has been recognized locally and nationally by The National Gardening Association, The Kansas City Star, The Kansas City Community Gardens, The Green Bliss Festival, The Urban Farm & Garden Tour, and on the PBS television program America's Harvest. Mark learned about gardening from his grandmother Edna Jacobsen on the family's McCool Junction, Nebraska farm. His grandmother raised a huge garden, chickens, sheep and cattle. She preserved apples, wild berry jams, and beets and virtually everything she grew was canned for consumption in winter months. Edna raised seven children with no running water and as a child lived in a sod house. His passion for the school gardening program has been fueled by the fact that he doesn't see the lessons he learned from his grandmother passed down to kids today. Kids need to know where their food comes from, especially with the rise of diabetes, and over weight Americans. We can all learn from our gardens how to treat ourselves and the world better.

Isaiah, Dee, and Solomon Radke of the critically acclaimed rock trio Radkey joins us live in our 90.1 FM studios to talk about their upcoming performance Saturday night at recordBar with Quixotic Performers, as headliners for the 14th Annual Crossroads Music Fest. Radkey was formed in 2010 in St. Joseph, where the brothers were raised. The family moved to Kansas City several years ago. The band has released two full-length recordings — “Dark Black Makeup” in 2015 and “Delicious Rock Noise” in 2016 — plus multiple EPs and singles, and recently were part of a MasterCard advertising campaign on digital billboards in NYC along with a national television commercial that aired during the Grammy Awards that brought the band to the attention of Jack White who asked the band to tour with him. After Crossroads Music Fest the band goes back on the road playing shows with The Damned throughout the United States. In December they’ll go back into the studio to record their next album with producer Bill Stevenson of the California punk rock group Descendents. Then in 2019 they play shows in Amsterdam and Stockholm.

We just heard “Basement” one of several singles that band is releasing this year. The band has said that with these new songs the band is trying to be more personal to let the audience know more about who you are. You’ve said the band has gained more life experiences.

2012 was a big year for the band

Radkey was nominated for a Pitch Music Award for Best Emerging Act and played at The Pitch Music Showcase, at The Riot Room.

Radkey’s first chance to play Afropunk Fest in 2011 was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. The band would then return to Brooklyn to play Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, New York on August 25-26, with Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Spank Rock, Das Racist, Toshi Reagon

On Sept 25, 2012 the trio tracked the single and video, “Cat & Mouse,” for Wreckroom Records.

Radkey’s shows at SXSW 2012 attracted the attention of New York Times reporter Jim McKinley.

April 18, 2013, Radkey released “Spirals” & “N.I.G.G.A. (Not Okay)” on Replay Records single 7″

Following SXSW 2013, radio producer for Zane Lowe introduces the music to Zane’s program; Zane Lowe debuts 2 tracks – “Spirals” and “Cat & Mouse” on his show May 2, 2013.

On June 4, 2013 Radkey released their Cat & Mouse EP on Wreckroom Records.

Radkey was invited to play at Download Festival in the UK – Summer 2013.
While in Europe the band attracted critical press with NME, both in print and online.

Radkey recorded their second EP, Devil Fruit, with Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios in Kansas City, Missouri. The EP was mixed by Rory Attwell (Palma Violets, The Vaccines).

The band hit the road for their United States tour in support of NAAM.

Radkey’s Single “Romance Dawn” was released September 16, 2013 on Little Man Records

On September 24, 2013 Radkey’s video, Romance Dawn, made it’s debut on NME. The video was directed by Shaun Hamontree (MK12 design crew, video for Common ‘Go’, Jack White & Alicia Keys ‘Another Way to Die’, Title design for Quantum of Solace, The Kite Runner and Stranger than Fiction)

On October 1, 2013 Radkey played Later with Jools Holland performing “Out Here in My Head.”

The trio continued touring in late 2013 in support of Drenge, Black Joe Lewis, and Red Fang.

Following the tour, the band recorded their single, “Feed My Brain,” and the track, “Digging the Grave,” with Justin Mantooth at Westend Studio, KC, MO – mixed by Ross Orton.

Radkey on Wikipedia:

Radkey consists of three home-schooled brothers from St. Joseph, Missouri. Isaiah Radke (bass), Solomon Radke (drums), and Dee Radke (lead vocals and guitar) who formed their family-titled band in 2010, and played their first show in 2011 when they opened for Fishbone. With their dad, Matt Radke, as their manager, they have since played with the likes of Jack White, The Offspring, Descendents, Local H, Black Joe Lewis, Titus Andronicus and performed at festivals like SXSW, Riot Fest, Afropunk, Japan’s Punkspring the U.K.’s Download Festival, and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They have released two EPs since their inception: 2012’s Cat & Mouse with Adrian Grenier’s Wreckroom Records and 2013’s Devil Fruit on Little Man Records. The band worked with Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, Drenge) to release their latest single, “Feed My Brain” and the team released their debut LP Dark Black Makeup in August 2015. The music video for their song “Glore” was featured near the ending of the episode “Shapes” of Off the Air on Adult Swim. Their debut album was re-released in 2016 under a new name, ‘Delicious Rock Noise’ and featuring two bonus tracks.

Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC in 2014 after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released the EPs, Moments, Prose, and last year’s full length debut, Catastrophe. This year he released the EP Caviar to special guests who attended his Wickstock West show in West Bottoms. Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar & harp. [Krystle Warren’s double album: Love Songs – A Time You May Embrace & Love Songs – A Time to Refrain from Embracing came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the vinyl release. Originally from Kansas City, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs.” Krystle release her last album, Three The Hard Way on Parlour Door Music on August 18, 2017. Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” Three The Hard Way was #1 on WMM’s 117 Best Recordings of 2017.]

At 11:00 Isaiah, Dee, & Solomon Radke of the critical acclaimed band Radkey join us live in our 90.1 FM studios. Radkey plays Crossroads Music Fest, September 8 at 11:45 PM, at recordBar, with Quixotic Performers. Radkey was formed in 2010 in St. Joseph, Missouri where the brothers were raised. The family moved to Kansas City several years ago. The band has released two full-length recordings, “Dark Black Makeup” in 2015 and “Delicious Rock Noise” in 2016, plus two EPs and several new singles, and were recently part of a MasterCard advertising campaign on digital billboards in New York City that brought them to the attention of Jack White who asked the band to toured with him. After CMF Radkey goes on the road throughout the United States and will play shows in Amsterdam and Stockholm in early 2019.

One reviewer wrote of her, “Amy Farrand is a tough-as-nails vocalist making her an invaluable asset to any live act.” Amy’s new band Amy Farrand & The Like released an 11-song debut album in April and are also nominated for a Pitch “Best of Kansas City” Award.

Kansas City based drummer Lisa Mckenzie, has played in the bands, Cher UK, Grand Marquis, and Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band. Lisa joins us to talk about an adolescent program she coordinates at Clay-Platte Montessori School, a farm based school at 5901 NW Waukomis Drive, Kansas City, Missouri. This is a Montessori school that celebrates diversity and being a community, located on 10 acres of wooded property, complete with a meandering creek.

Lisa brought with her two students from the school and farming program: Ashlynn Gale, 13 years, and Alex Stoll, 14 years.

The students have been selling their produce at the KCK Farmers Market.

Clay-Platte Montessori School is built on land that was once home to the Hopewell people, dating back to 2000 BC. CPMS middle school children have worked with a local archeologist to find artifacts that have helped to identify the native people and date the time of the inhabitance. The children have named and registered the site as 10 Acre Wood with the Archeology Society.

The mission of Clay-Platte Montessori School is to employ the philosophy and methods of Dr. Maria Montessori and educate young people to their fullest potential, instilling a deep sense of personal independence and responsibility to self, to others, and to our Earth.

Their purpose is to provide, through the Montessori philosophy and curriculum, an environment where each child will be free to function and develop individually, naturally and sequentially into the whole child that lies within, realizing the full potential of his/her innate talents.

Ashlynn Gale and Alex Stoll talked about raising chickens and goats. collecting eggs and milking the goats. Alex talked about pulling weeds and keeping the gardens maintained.

Lisa is a mom and with her husband has adopted 8 children. Lisa and her family live on a farm and raise horses and other animals.

Lisa is a drummer, gardener, traveler, hiker, equestrian, dog smoocher , parent, dreamer, thinker, life lover.

Lisa currently plays with Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band who won Best Local Band from The pitch Magazine Best of Kansas City (2017)

Current Full-Time Members include: Alex Abramovitz (founding member since 2008) on cornet, arrangements, & vocals; “Pretty” Ricky Cole on guitar & banjo (since 2014); Jeff Schwartz on bass & tuba (since 2017); and Lisa McKenzie on drums (Since 2017).

Lisa also plays in several side projects of Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band.

Lisa also plays in a blue grass band called Sycamore Grove, and in the band KC Bankroll.

Ivory Blue started writing music at the age of 14. An Indiana native, Ivory was given up for adoption at the age of 4, into a family that later caused them to run away at the age of 15. IVORY played coffee houses and small venues before landing in Kansas City in 2010. Ivory was one of the first artists to come-out as Non Binary Transgender, and gained respect from radio, television, and international magazines. In 2017 Ivory was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. Ivory won local and regional challenges and advanced to the nationals in Los Angeles, where the top five bands played The Viper Room before judges that included: Scott Borchetta President & CEO of Big Machine Label Records; fashion designer John Varvatos; songwriter & producer Desmond Child; engineer Chris Lord-Alge; Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols; and Gavin Rossdale of Bush. Ivory won the entire competition and the opportunity to record “Ready Get Set” for Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records. The single was released this summer on June 15, 2018.

[Ivory Blue was born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, as Devin James Miclettet. Ivory’s birth mother put them up for adoption at the age of four. Ivory speaks about how it was difficult to find trust in people offering their home to someone denied of it for so long, Ivory had lived with eight different families, before running away at 15, moving from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ending up in Seattle. In 2011, after a friend sent a plane ticket, Ivory landed in the Kansas City area, and became a part of new family where they were able to have solid ground and over the past several years has been performing in singer-songwriter showcases and in June 2015 Ivory released their debut EP, Ready Get Set.]

Ivory Blue was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. Ivory won local and regional challenges and advanced to the nationals in Los Angeles, where the top five bands played The Viper Room before judges that included: Scott Borchetta President & CEO of Big Machine Label Records; fashion designer John Varvatos; songwriter & producer Desmond Child; engineer Chris Lord-Alge; Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols; and Gavin Rossdale of Bush. Ivory Blue has played Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, Kauffman Stadium, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped IVØRY find their way to KC. Ivory has said that she saved their life.

Ivory has talked with us about how they have turned to music to express pain. Ivory spent most of their childhood looking for a family. In 2010 Klaartje Van Lue say Ivory performing in a YouTube video and contacted them, flying them to KC, and adopting Ivory into the Van Lue family. During the past 8 years Ivory came out as Non-Binary Transgender

One of the resources for Ivory in this transition was Caroline Gibbs, co-founder of the Transgender Institute.

Barry please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your friend and wife Caroline Lee who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 18th, surrounded by her family.

Caroline was an early volunteer and organizer for KKFI beginning in 1985. When the station went on the air in 1988, she hosted a show called “Watusi Rodeo,” which was one of the first alternative country radio shows in the country.

After that, Caroline guested often on Signal To Noise, tended her garden, went to music shows and doted on her cats.

At 10:35 Mark talks with Kansas City based drummer Lisa Mckenzie, who has played in the bands, Cher UK, Grand Marquis, and Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band. Lisa Mckenzie is also a gardener, educator, and mom, and she joins us to talk about an adolescent program she coordinates at Clay Platte Montessori, a farm based school. The students have been selling their produce at the KCK Farmers Market.

Ivory Blue

At 11:00 Ivory Blue, joins us in our 90.1 FM Studios. Ivory Blue started writing music at the age of 14. An Indiana native, Ivory was given up for adoption at the age of 4, into a family that later caused them to run away at the age of 15. IVORY played coffee houses and small venues before landing in Kansas City in 2010. Ivory was one of the first artists to come-out as Non Binary Transgender, and gained respect from radio, television, and international magazines. In 2017 Ivory was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. Ivory won local and regional challenges and advanced to the nationals in Los Angeles, where the top five bands played The Viper Room before judges that included: Scott Borchetta President & CEO of Big Machine Label Records; fashion designer John Varvatos; songwriter & producer Desmond Child; engineer Chris Lord-Alge; Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols; and Gavin Rossdale of Bush. [25 year old Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Following the release of her debut album “Scars” in 2014, Una immediately had “new fans. . . coming out of the proverbial woodwork” (AXS). Paired with refreshingly raw vocals, Una’s heartfelt lyrics “will stop you in your tracks (at once beautiful and chilling),” wrote Gilded Palace Radio, as she weaves stories of genuine human experience. Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father can be challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. In January of 2018 Una Walkenhorst returned home to Kansas City from New Orleans. Over the past several years, Una and Bob had performed together at selected events, including Folk Alliance International. This year the father and daughter duo decided to record an album together, where they split the difference, taking turns as songwriters for the album’s songs, written individually, and recorded together, in clear beautiful harmonies, with that extra special shared musical DNA, that can be heard in the harmonies of The Carter Family, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, or Shy Boys.]

3. Mary Gauthier – “Got Your Six”

[Brand new collection of songs by Mary Gauthier, co-written with U.S. veterans and their families, through Songwriting With Soldiers, a non-profit organization that pairs US veterans with professional songwriters. These songs are a glimpse inside the hearts and souls of both male and female soldiers, and their spouses. From Pop Matters: “SongwritingWith:Soldiers is an organization founded by songwriter Darden Smith that holds retreats pairing wounded veterans with established songwriters to help them to find a voice to express their experiences and through their sharing work towards emotional and spiritual healing. Songwriters who have participated in the program include Beth Nielsen Chapman, Marshall Crenshaw, Radney Foster, and Amy Speace, and some of the songs produced have been recorded by major country artists including Willie Nelson, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, and Garth Brooks. Mary Gauthier is a natural to serve as a contributor to this cause, her powerful autobiographical songwriting on past records addressing such topics as addiction, abandonment, and the search for meaning amidst pain. Turning her empathetic ear to the plights of others, she guides a group of veterans and their families through the composition of 11 highly effective and affecting songs. Of the experience, Gauthier writes “None of the veterans are artists. They don’t write songs; they don’t know that songs can be used to move trauma. Their understanding of song doesn’t include that. For me, it’s been the whole damn deal. Songwriting saved me. It’s what I think the best songs do, help articulate the ineffable, make the invisible visible, creating resonance, so that people (including the songwriter) don’t feel alone.” Gauthier was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born to a mother she never knew and left in St Vincent’s Women and Infants Asylum, Gauthier was adopted when she was a year old by an Italian Catholic couple from Thibodaux, Louisiana. At age 15, she ran away from home, and spent the next several years in drug rehabilitation, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in a jail cell. Struggling to deal with being adopted, she used drugs and alcohol. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on. Spurred on by friends, she enrolled at Louisiana State University as a philosophy major, dropping out during her senior year. After attending the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, she opened a Cajun restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, Dixie Kitchen (also the title of her first album). Mary ran, and cooked at, the restaurant for eleven years. She was arrested for drunk driving opening night, July 12, 1990, and has been sober ever since. After achieving sobriety, she was driven to dedicate herself full-time to songwriting, and embarked upon a career in music. She wrote her first song at age 35. She sold her share in the restaurant to finance her second album, Drag Queens in Limousines, in 1998. The summer of the release of this album, she was invited to play 11 major folk festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival. Drag Queens in Limousines won in The 1st Annual Independent Music Awards for Folk/Singer-Songwriter Song, and she was nominated for Best New Artist of the year by the Boston Music Awards. She was nominated for three Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA) and won best country artist of the year. In 2002 her third album, Filth and Fire, was named “Best Indy CD of the year” by Jon Pareles of The New York Times. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2001 and secured a publishing deal with Harlan Howard Songs, then secured a record deal with Lost Highway, a division of Universal Music, in 2003. Her first major label release, in 2005, Mercy Now was on the top 10 list for the year in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Daily News, and Billboard Magazine.]

4. Krystle Warren & The Faculty – “Every Morning”

[Krystle Warren’s double album: Love Songs – A Time You May Embrace & Love Songs – A Time to Refrain from Embracing came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the vinyl release. Originally from Kansas City, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs.” Krystle release her last album, Three The Hard Way on Parlour Door Music on August 18, 2017. Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” Three The Hard Way was #1 on WMM’s 117 Best Recordings of 2017.]

Emmaline Twist got started in early 2016 when Krysztof Nemeth, former baritone guitarist in The Latenight Callers, started collaborating with Meredith McGrade, a veteran of several Kansas City bands, including Admiral Red, Wick and The Tricks, and The B’Dinas. Krysztof told Timothy Finn of The Kansas City Star, “Meredith and I got started in trying to capture the sound and feel of the music we mutually loved: post-punk and shoegaze,” Nemeth said. “Meredith initially played bass and sang, while I employed the baritone guitar as the lead instrument.”

Jonathan Knecht, formerly of the Silver Maggies, came along as drummer.

Kristin Conkright, formerly of Knife Crime and Onward Crispin Glover, was looking for a project. During the very first The Band That Fell to Earth – Bowie Tribute Show, at The Uptown Theatre, in January 2016, Kristin approached Krysztof asking what he was working on and asked if he needed a bassist. Krzysztof liked her sound and thought it would fit the Emmaline Twist vision. McGrade moved to guitar and Conkright came aboard as bassist.

Alex Alexander & The Band That Fell To Earth

Recently, Alex Alexander, of The Band That Fell to Earth, has joined the band on synthesizers, becoming the 5th member.

In 2017 the band released “Dissimulation 1,” four songs in digital format, their first since 2016’s single release of “Vega” b/w “Moon Eyes.”

The band’s new 12″ LP is being released by Black Site Records, a label started by members of the band Red Kate, who have had a busy couple of years releasing music from Red Kate, Chess Club, Truckstop Love, Wick and The Tricks, and others.

Earlier this season, Emmaline Twist became the second official release of the eat.hear.records, limited edition 7″ vinyl single series, with the tracks: “Vega” and “Moon Eyes.” These were the band’s original first two digital releases.

Teri Quinn is a Kansas City based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Teri moved to Kansas City in 2009 to study Clarinet Performance and Music Composition at the University Of Missouri Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music where she graduated in 2013. We first met Teri playing clarinet and guitar for Claire and the Crowded Stage. Teri is also a jewelry designer and her business is calle Rattlebone Design. Teri calls herself, “A Northern girl with a Southern heart living in the Mid-West.” Teri has also contributed experimental compositions for The Black House Collective, andin 2016 released her debut EP, Moons and Meltdowns.

Tyson Schroeder is an illustrator and fine artist. Over the last 20 years he has created images for bands, galleries, theatre companies, book illustrations and covers, periodicals, and Zim’s Sauces. Tyson has had works included in group and solo shows in KC, Boston, Salem, Portland, Houston and Nashville, and in museum shows about band posters, as he has created posters for, The Dresden Dolls, Unsane, Fiona Apple, and Season to Risk. Tyson has worked with puppets, sculpture, and improv performance, spoken word, and theatre as an actor, designer, and playwright. Tyson is also a musician, who plays in the band Medicine Theory.

Krysztof Nemeth moved back to the Kansas City area from Seattle, Washington, 10 years ago. He is a published artist who has work specializing in fetish, gothic, retro, and low-brow kulture pin-up illustration. Krysztof has created saucy pin-up girls for everything from bands to burlesque troupes, gallery shows to rock shows, and clothing stores to private commissions. He work is in shows all over the country. Krysztof is also a father. He was one of the founders and lead guitarist for the band The Latenight Callers who released their critically acclaimed EP Easy Virtues in 2012 and the full length album, Songs for Stolen Moments in 2013. Krysztof os also the founder and baritone guitarist for Emmaline Twist, who are releasing their full length debut album, Dissimulation on Black Site Records, on Friday, August 24, at 8:00 PM, at recordBar, 1520 Grand, with Mysterious Clouds & Sona.

Brown grew up in small town rural Kansas and describes having a “dreamers disease” from a very young age. He quotes Kerouac, Woody Guthrie, and Waldo Emerson for developing his curiosity about being a “life long freedom seeker.” The notion of “self obtained freedom” is the central issue at the heart of Wade D. Brown’s music. With primary influences from pre-war delta and ragtime blues, medicine show music, bluegrass, vaudeville, and country folk, Wade D. Elizabeth Stokes previously worked in a folk band. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.” All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y. [Stacy says these songs “were written for the Outskrts LBTQ Festival and performed live with live dancers. They are meant to be anthem-like in their themes of coming together as a community.” 28 year old Stacy Busch is originally from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She is a multimedia artist & performer. Her collaborative concert experiences are designed to be provocative and accessible to cultivate broader artistic interest and, reach under-served and/or misrepresented communities. Stacy is the founder and president of No Divide KC, an arts and social justice non-profit that creates artistic events for various social causes. Stacy’s work has been performed nationally as well as in France and Iceland. She recently partnered with Gilda’s Club KC, Owen/Cox Dance and Charlotte Street Foundation to compose and perform the music for “Collective: Our Stories of Cancer.” In 2018, her service with No Divide KC will include partnerships with the Kansas City Ballet School and the Johnson County Library. Stacy’s work has been performed at, the Kansas City Fringe Festival, Art in the Loop Kansas City, the experimental concert series ArtSounds, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and UMKC Composer’s Guild Concerts. She has partnered with the Kansas City Streetcar, the UMKC dance program, Charlotte Street Foundation and the electronic music non-profit KcEMA. In addition to Kansas City, Stacy’s work has been featured at the University of Colorado-Boulder, the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University. It has also been performed by ensembles including: Bent Frequency, the Beo String Quartet and the Zodiac Trio. She is a two-time ArtSounds Grant recipient, a UMKC Women’s Council Grant recipient and was a CITS Scholar at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Stacy received her Masters in Music in composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and her Bachelors in Music in composition from Western Michigan University. Her teachers include Rome Prize winners Paul Rudy and James Mobberley as well as Pulitzer Prize winners Zhou Long and Chen Yi. Other influential teachers include Guggenheim Fellow Curtis Curtis-Smith, Christopher Biggs and Lisa Coons. Prior to studying music, Stacy studied print journalism at Boston University.]

Chase the Horseman is now a 4-piece band with Chase on lead vocals & keyboards, Ian Dobyns on drums, Skylar Cowdry on bass & synth, Ada Brumbach on guitar, synth, & bass.

Chase is also now playing bass in the band Dreamgirl, where Ian Dobyns is also on drums.

Last time Chase was on the radio show was on November 15, 2017, after he had just returned from Mexico City, where he was working on the soundtrack for a new television show.

On August 2, 2017, Chase Horseman joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley with KD Kuro. Chase helped to produce KD’s debut solo album.

On June 7, 2017 Chase Horseman joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley with Teri Ann Quinn. Chased helped in Teri’s debut EP recording, Moons and Meltdowns, as producer, engineer, and performer.

Chase The Horseman has also performed on stage and in recordings with with Heidi Lynne Gluck. A lot of his work has been in collaboration with other artists.

Chase Horseman also works with Element Recording doing Engineering, Mixing, Mastering under the guidance of Joel Nanos and Lennon Bone.

Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. [25 year old Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Following the release of her debut album “Scars” in 2014, Una immediately had “new fans. . . coming out of the proverbial woodwork” (AXS). Paired with refreshingly raw vocals, Una’s heartfelt lyrics “will stop you in your tracks (at once beautiful and chilling),” wrote Gilded Palace Radio, as she weaves stories of genuine human experience. Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father can be challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. In January of 2018 Una Walkenhorst returned home to Kansas City from New Orleans. Over the past several years, Una and Bob had performed together at selected events, including Folk Alliance International. This year the father and daughter duo decided to record an album together, where they split the difference, taking turns as songwriters for the album’s songs, written individually, and recorded together, in clear beautiful harmonies, with that extra special shared musical DNA, that can be heard in the harmonies of The Carter Family or Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. Described as the “love child” of Adele, Carole King, and Joss Stone, Summer Osborne is an award winning singer-songwriter with a charismatic stage presence. Summer’s ninth album, Spiritual Revolution, was released in August of 2015. Summer Osborne first graced the stage at the tender age of four, but has been performing her original tunes for fans since 2005. St. Louis, Missouri based singer songwriter, Sarah McCracken has been on tour with Summer Osborne before. She has toured all over the country. Sarah McCracken graduated from Missouri State University in Springfield with a degree in Psychology. She also studied at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College in St. Louis. Sarah McCracken has worked as a case manager for the Center for Urban Community Service in New York City, and as a program manager for St. Louis Arc.

11. Kristie Stremel – “Orlando (Keep Dancing)” (LIVE)

Orlando (Keep Dancing) was released as a Single on Stremeltone Records on June 16, 2016 The song was written by: Kristie Stremel in response to the Pulse Nightclub masacre on June 12, 2016, when Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Pulse was hosting Latin Night and most of the victims were Latino. About 320 people were inside the club, which was serving last call drinks at around 2:00 a.m. After arriving at the club by van, Omar Mateen approached the building on foot, armed with a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol and bypassed security and began shooting and taking hostages. After a three-hour standoff, he was shot and killed by Orlando Police Department officers. It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history. It was also the deadliest terrorist attack in the US since the 9 /11 attacks in 2001. Recorded and Mixed by Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound. Mastered by John Hobson. In October, 2013 Kristie and her partner, Lori Isabell, welcomed their adopted baby son, Charlie, into their family. In April 2014 Kristie released her 6th solo record, and the 9th full-length release of her musical career of over 20 years. Released on her own label, Stremeltone, it was Kristie’s first self-produced album. Stremeltone Records, was created in her home in Lawrence. The last track, “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partnerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The video was Kristie’s response the the KS House of Representatives passing HD 2453 allowing business the right to refuse service to LGBT customers. In 2015 Kristie released, Wildflowers, her children’s book of song and poems with accompanying CD recording with contributions from Victor & Penny, Kelley Hunt, Ron Megee, Kasey Rausch and more.]

[Kamasi Washington was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 2, 1981 to musical parents and educators, and was raised in Inglewood, California. He is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, producer, and bandleader. Washington is known mainly for playing tenor saxophone. He is a graduate of the Academy of Music of Alexander Hamilton High School in Beverlywood, Los Angeles. Washington next enrolled in UCLA’s Department of Ethnomusicology, where he began playing with faculty members such as Kenny Burrell, Billy Higgins and band leader/trumpeter Gerald Wilson. Washington features in the album Young Jazz Giants in 2004. He has played along with a diverse group of musicians including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Horace Tapscott, Gerald Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Mike Muir, Francisco Aguabella, the Pan Afrikaan People’s Orchestra and Raphael Saadiq. Washington ventured into big band music when he joined the Gerald Wilson Orchestra for their 2006 album In My Time. Washington played saxophone on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. His debut solo recording, The Epic, was released in May 2015 to critical acclaim. His second studio album, Heaven and Earth, was released in June 2018, with a companion EP titled The Choice released a week later.]

[A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/vocals) brought in the delicious ‘The Same Star’, which marries Belle and Sebastian’s melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). “We’d met Leo in February of 2016, and I’d say that meeting and the recording of ‘I’ll Be Your Pilot’ were the first tangible steps of this EP project,” Martin says. “We didn’t have a stack of songs to play him, but we liked him and he became a part of the plan from that point – and when I’d got to a point with ‘The Same Star’ where it just needed to be recorded, I thought it could benefit from having a producer to steer things, and fortunately we had a slot in the diary marked ‘Leo’ coming up. [Los Angeles based band with: Syd Bennett, Matthew Martin, Patrick Paige II, Christopher Allan Smith and Steve Lacy. THE INTERNET began as two people – Syd and Matt. Syd taught herself how to record, engineer, and produce at age 15. She also sings, imbuing every song with a sultry, mellifluous, quiet power. Matt produces and plays synths. She’s now 23; he’s now 26. Like all post-modern relationships, the duo initially met on Myspace in 2008, only to meet in-person three years later. THE INTERNET have released two albums previously – 2011’s Purple Naked Ladies, and 2012’s Feel Good. THE INTERNET branched off from the Odd Future collective and started their own band in 2011. Syd had been writing music since she was small; she put this on hold to become OF’s DJ and producer, and picked her songs back up in 2011 to make her first full-length album with Matt. When they play live, THE INTERNET is a band – a six-person outfit whose youngest member is 17. They began playing as a full-band in order to tour behind Feel Good, and the band members all contributed their talents to THE INTERNET’s 2015 album EGO DEATH.]

8. Fantastic Negrito – “A Letter To Fear”

[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

Former drummer Nick Jago left the band in 2008 to focus on his solo project. They have released eight studio albums: B.R.M.C. (2001), Take Them On, On Your Own (2003), Howl (2005), Baby 81 (2007), The Effects of 333 (2008), Beat the Devil’s Tattoo (2010), Specter at the Feast (2013) and Wrong Creatures (2018), as well as several EPs, and live albums. The band was formed in 1998, originally called The Elements. After discovering that another band had the same name, the members changed the name to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, after Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One.]

[Official Mr Bongo reissue of the ultra-rare album by ‘Super Elcados’. A fusion of heavyweight Nigerian funk, soul & disco, originally released by EMI Nigeria in 1976. The ‘Super Elcados’ (and ’Elcados’ on other recordings) recorded three albums in the mid and late-70’s, this is their first. It was followed by ‘This World Is Full Of Injustice’ and ‘What Ever You Need’.]

[The Souljazz Orchestra is a Canadian musical group based in Ottawa that has toured Canada, the United States and Europe. Their music is a fusion of soul, jazz, funk, Afrobeat and Latin styles. The band has six members: Pierre Chrétien on electric piano, clavinet, organ, guitar, bass, percussion, vocals; Marielle Rivard on percussion, vocals; Steve Patterson on tenor sax, percussion, vocals; Ray Murray on baritone sax, percussion, vocals; Zakari Frantz on alto sax, flute, percussion, vocals; Philippe Lafrenière on drums, percussion, vocals. The band signed to London-based Strut Records, a UK record label that focuses on dance music and afrobeat. Other musicians signed to Strut include “Ethio-Jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Motown guitarist Dennis Coffey and Ghanaian highlife singer Ebo Taylor, to name a few.” According to AllMusic, the band’s “overtly political 2006 single “Mista President,” off second album Freedom No Go Die (Do Right!), really increased their audience, [as it was] voted to the number nine spot in the 2006 Top 30 of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide programme. In 2012, the band completed two US tours that included stops in cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Chicago. 14. Vive la Void – “Red Rider”

[Vive la Void is the new solo project of Sanae Yamada, co-founder and keyboard player of Moon Duo. Yamada wrote and recorded the self-titled debut album over roughly a two-year period, during windows of downtime in Moon Duo’s substantial touring and recording schedule. The dense, shape-shifting atmospheres of the seven songs grew out of late-night basement experiments in the layering of synthesizer tracks, a process that also led to meditations on the changeable nature of memory and perception. The result is an undulating blend of ethereal swirl, low end thrumming, and electric crackle, buoyed by Yamada’s understated but captivating vocal melodies and her striking lyrics. “The lyrics were a way of reckoning with my own memories and also of trying to process my reactions to the human situation,” Yamada explains. “I wanted the voice to have a kind of ghostly quality, to emerge from and recede back into the song, or to pass over it like weather. It’s one of many layers of sound, which are meant to blend together in such a way that on one listen you might hear one thing, and on another listen you might hear something else, so the music seems to change even as it stays the same.” Yamada has spent the last decade as a working musician, moving between semi-permanent home bases whenever she isn’t living in a tour van. In some ways, then, it feels inevitable that Vive la Void became a meditation on the strange rhythms of long-term touring, constant relocation, and the accompanying stream of brief but compelling encounters. It’s a testament to her empathy and creativity that these songs feel both specific and universal, familiar yet tantalizingly unknowable. “I feel like the movement of life in the sphere of consciousness is this process of trace-leaving,” Yamada reflects. “Wherever we go, whomever we interact with, whatever we touch, we leave and absorb these invisible traces, this residue of memory that lingers. I wanted the sonic textures of this record to explore that state of being there and not there, of something being with you but not tangible.”]

15. Ty Segall & White Fence – “Room Connector”

[From Paste Magazine (July 18, 2018): Another month, another Ty Segall album. As noted in Paste earlier this year, the king of California psych/garage/punk-rock is arguably THEE most prolific major musician working right now, and the level of quality he achieves across his releases is incredibly high. The guy is quickly putting together an all-timer of a catalog. The newest entry in said catalog is Segall’s second collaborative album with veteran Los Angeles psych-pop experimenter White Fence, aka Tim Presley, formerly of The Nerve Agents and Darker My Love, and more recently Cate Le Bon’s partner in DRINKS. The two men joined forces in 2012 to produce a fun and fuzzed-out collection of songs called Hair, a “glorious mess of an album” we said way back when. Joy is a little more messy but almost as glorious. With track times mostly clocking in under 120 seconds, it’s a series of quick hits that are warped but relentlessly tuneful, like a Beatles LP that’s spent a blazing hot afternoon lying on a busy freeway. As songwriters, Segall and Presley complement each other nicely: Segall certainly knows his way around a catchy tune, but Presley’s a more natural melodicist, and while Presley definitely has his own rough edge, Segall’s a prodigious shredder. Wonder Twin Powers, activate! Form of…a fucked-up pop song! Highlights on Joy include “Body Behavior,” a pulsing acoustic rocker that snakes in the verses and sparkles in the chorus; “Other Way,” a dead-eyed noise excavation that feels like it fell off the Incesticide tree of influence; and “A Nod,” another rhythmic strummer that may just boast the prettiest melody on the album. There are other great songs here: the occasionally jazzy “Good Boy,” the beautiful and Neil Young-ish “My Friend,” and the propulsive “Do Your Hair,” which is powered by a bouncy bass line and uses its 95 seconds with impressive efficiency. The opposite is true for a couple of tracks that show up near the end of the album, “She Is Gold” and “Tommy’s Place,” two silly and/or stoney studio experiments that go nowhere, really. Joy would’ve been a tighter overall package if they’d been cut. With Segall, though, it’s worth hearing a couple of clunkers if it means he’ll keep making music at his preferred dizzying pace, because his hit-to-miss ratio is so high. And collaborating with Presley doesn’t dent that ratio. In fact, it brings out good things in both men. Here’s hoping their next album isn’t another six years away.

[For fans of boogie in its Stateside form—think Kashif, Mtume, and the sprawling SOLAR Records oeuvre of producer Leon Sylvers III–Chébran Volume 2 offers both the comfort of the familiar and the thrill of the exotic. The brassy synthesizer tone on songs like “Heidi Bled Noum,” originally released by Shams Dinn in 1987, could just as easily have come out of Minneapolis circa 1983; and the Francophone flows on rap tracks like Phil Barney’s “Funk Rap,” JM Black’s “Lipstick,” and Alfio Scandurra’s “Qu’est Ce Qui Ne Va Pas?” demonstrate that even if the South Bronx was far away, the fruits of its culture had reached as far as Paris and Marseilles. But the songs collected here are more than just novel variations on American sounds; at their most intriguing, they reflect the unique cultural makeup of post-colonial France. Boogie, of course, grew out of the cross-pollinations between African American funk and European synthpop; the Gallic variety, with its roots in French immigrant communities, incorporated even further-flung influences from Africa and the Middle East. The aforementioned Dinn, born Mohammed Ben Bouchta, performs in Arabic, as do many of the other artists on the compilation; “Propriété Privée” singer Sammy Massamba hails from the Congo; the proto-electro “Ettika” was recorded by a group of Franco-Arab women of the same name. Chébran is rife with such intercontinental couplings and fascinating stylistic mutations, and the later chronological focus of this second volume opens up even more possibilities, with frequent forays into hip-hop and pure electronic music. It’s easy to picture Afro-French B-boys popping and locking to “Porquoi Tant de Haine,” the 1988 closing track by MC Joel Ferrati; or to Ethnie’s 1986 “De Chagrin en Chagrin,” which pairs a funky live hip-hop arrangement with an Arabic call-and-response chorus. Like most compilations of its ilk, Chébran’s sampling of international dance obscurities holds immediate appeal for DJs and other crate-digging connoisseurs of rare grooves. But there’s also an intrinsic value to hearing post-disco sounds defamiliarized and recontextualized in this way. A nebulous, short-lived genre even in its American form, boogie is often overlooked as a stopgap between disco proper and its sleeker, more mechanized offshoots, such as electro, house and techno. The hybrid formulations on Chébran Volume 2 offer a glimpse of the style’s unexploited possibilities, its adaptability into alternative cultures and contexts. Una Walkenhorst has lived in New Orleans, and Brooklyn, New York

After her 2014 debut release “Scars” Una Walkenhorst quit her job, got in her two-door Honda Civic and traveled across North America for a year and a half.

Una wanted to make it as a musician, on her own terms without help from her father.

Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter to dad Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had a string of national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s.

Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father was sometimes challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says.

Una has a new album, recorded with her father, (Bob Walkenhorst of The Rainmakers) called, For Tomorrow, that will be released on October 12.

The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the investigation, litigation, and exoneration of wrongfully convicted men and women in our five-state region. Recent studies conservatively estimate that between 2% and 5% of all inmates in America are innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted, with some estimates reaching up to 7%. This means that somewhere between 2,000 and 7,000 moms, dads, sons, and daughters in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas are locked behind bars this very moment for crimes they did not commit.

After a conviction, it takes roughly seven to ten years for an innocent person to be exonerated, and the process is very expensive. As of May 2017, the 349 men and women across the country who have been exonerated through DNA served an average of 14 years in prison. The MIP staff, along with our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Next Gen Board, and volunteers, works diligently to give freedom back to those whom the legal system has failed. Thanks to our partnerships with law schools at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and Columbia and the University of Kansas, our presence in the classroom gives us the opportunity to teach the next generation of lawyers and investigators how to identify and prevent these injustices.

The Midwest Innocence Project was founded in 2001 through the UMKC School of Law and is part of the national Innocence Network. In addition to our university partnerships, we also work in conjunction with the Nebraska Innocence Project, and Iowa Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Division. Una Walkenhorst is working on her second solo album to follow up on Scars (released in 2014). She says that her previous album was lighter, but for her second album she is older, and in a different place, and plans to focus on heavier topics including mental illness and depression.

Una told KCUR FM, “It can be very stigmatizing and people don’t want to talk about it a lot, but I feel that it’s very important thing to talk about. So quite few songs in my next album will touch upon mental illness, and what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression.”
