50 years ago, on this date, I was born, so today i’ll play from some of my favorite recordings, from different times of my life, starting in 2nd grade when I discovered his Mom’s record collection in the basement.

I was in second grade, seven years old, in our unfinished basement we had an old TV that got one channel, CBS, out of Lincoln, Nebraska. Across the room was an old 1960’s wooden Stereo cabinet. Beside the cabinet was a box with several of my Mom’s albums. I pulled out “Meet The Beatles” put the needle on the groove, and this was this first spin of my life.

4. The Beatles – “All My Loving” (Mono)

Next I pulled out a cover that looked like a portrait of a wedding couple, except they were brother and sister, not husband and wife. It was “Close To You.” The Carpenters covered “Help” by The Beatles, and the big hits “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Close To You” a Burt Bacharach / Hal David classic. On the second side of the LP, they recorded another Burt Bacharach / Hal David song, originally written for the 1968 musical “Promises, Promises.” This song was made a hit by Bobbie Gentry, and also Dionne Warwick, but this version displays the amazing harmony and almost spooky studio arrangements of brother Richard Carpenter. It was 1971.

I grew up in a small town in Nebraska. R&B wasn’t played on the radio. When I was 11 my parents got a divorce and we moved to the “other side of town.” My mom got a job working at the Women’s Prison. Since mom was a new employee, she had to work all of the holidays, so I spent Easter, Mother’s Day, 4th of July, at the prison. It was there that I heard this song for the first time. The best music in town was at the prison.

In my tween years my mother’s record collection was changing, her second husband Al drove a van, and listened to 8-track tapes. My mom was in the RCA Music Club where they would automatically send you the new release, that’s how she ended up with the soundtrack to the film “Superfly” from Curtis Mayfield.The movie never played our town. But the soundtrack tells the story, and we hear in the bridge Curtis singing, “Trying to get over” the theme we hear in so many of Curtis Mayfield’s incredible recordings.

In high school journalism class, working on the yearbook staff, we listened to this debut record, of a new band from Athens, Georgia. We listened on a little small portable stereo, checked out from the media department. The record’s label said, “play loud,” we did.

8. The B-52’s – “52 Girls”

One summer morning, in 1982, in her apartment, in Crete, my friend BJ, woke me up, with the song, “Young Americans,” and it changed my life. I now had to have every Bowie recording ever made. Bowie actually helped me “come out,” and I learned that reinvention could prevent insanity. In my search back, I discovered “Hunky Dory,” recorded in 1971, just after his research trip to NYC & Andy Warhol’s Factory. This is the opening track on the second side of the album.

I was a Prince fan from very early on. Many people heard this song on Cyndi Lauper’s debut album, but I heard it first on his second album, “Dirty Mind.”

Their debut album came out in 1977, but it took some of us until 1981 to discover it, their music has been therapy to me, both physically and psychologically. I love all of their recordings, but 77 is special. They were fresh young art students fearlessly being a band.

13. Talking Heads – “Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town”

I knew I was gay when I was 5, but I kept it a secret. My first year in college I fell in love with a girl, but after 9 months I ended our relationship. I felt I was lying. That summer I started to “come out,” at least to myself, and then, in my second year in college, I sort of fell in love with my friend B.J.’s lesbian girlfriend Dani. She had moved into our dorm after a few dates with BJ. One night after a trip to KC, Dani and I ran across campus to Baba Rama’s room at Smith Hall. He had friends visiting, but we put on the cassette, “Combat Rock” by The Clash, and the three of us just started dancing. A straight guy, a lesbian girl, and a gay guy. I was 19, and trying to figure everything out. It was confusing. Thankfully I had a “kick-ass” soundtrack to help make the connections.

50 years ago, on this date, I was born, so today I’m playing from some of my favorite recordings, from different times of my life

Baba Rama, was two years older than me in college, he was always luring me into new situations, and possible danger. He had a reputation. He introduced me to Patti Smith’s album “Wave” the same night he bought thai stick from several international students. From that day forward, I would always love Patti Smith. All of her recordings are worth their weight, for her authentic rock and roll voice has passed from underground poet to best selling author. Her debut was produced by John Cale, and I think this song is perfect.

1984, was my own personal “Year of Hell.” I was 22, it was my Senior year in college. I was taking 23 credits my 1st semester and 21 my 2nd. It was the same year my theatre director decided to “put the moves on me.” I went from denial to rebellion, in a 9-month ark, and left empty, and estranged. The Smiths helped me feel less alone, and they were cool.

In the mid 1990s my friend Sandra was Manager of The Midland Theater. As a perk she arranged for our friends, to have front row seats, for multiple Patti LaBelle concerts. These shows were very special. The audience was so incredibly mixed, half of the audience was African American straight couples and the other half were gay men, and everyone was dressed like they were going to church, or a nightclub. The music and the love of Patti brought us all together. Patti performed all of her usual tricks, giving her eye lashes to someone in the audience; rolling across the stage from one side to the other; kicking her shoes off high into the air; crying, witnessing on stage. And of course singing, filling the room, with her voice, dropping the mic to the stage floor, to prove she could still be heard even if the electricity went out. Patti represents the history of modern pop music, from her days in The Bluebelles, and The Bluebelles fantastic transformation into LaBelle, a band that reinterpreted many rock classics, and also wrote many of their own best songs. This one was written by LaBelle member Nona Hendrix.

This is the title song from one of my favorite albums of all time. If you broke up with your lover, you may never hold them again, this record speaks to that part of your heart. In 1988 we were buying all of our favorite albums again, on CD, and hearing Joni digitally through the speakers, it felt like she was singing directly to me. I got to see her live, when she toured with Dylan in 1998. I had front row, center seats, at The United Center in Chicago. I cried through the entire concert as Joni played guitar, with her Jazz Combo, smoking a cigarette, bringing all of her songs alive onstage, it was sacred, like this song…

BJ’s girlfriend was in a CD subscription service and was sent the 5 CD, Box Set “Peel Slowly and See,” featuring all of The Velvet Underground’s studio recordings. Before BJ’s girlfriend could send it back, BJ snagged it, and gave it to Caleb and I as a gift. The music filled our house on West 39th Street. Where our first floor was used as an art gallery, a rehearsal space, a place for Scorpio parties, Jen’s Seder. The Velvet Undergound were the house band for Andy Warhol’s Factory. When I think about The Factory, I hear this song.

In the late 1990s while I was working at The Midland Theatre, my friend Julie Broski brought “The Charm of the Highway Strip” into the office to play, and I was hooked. I quickly began searching for all of the recordings of The Magnetic Fields. Then the band released the acclaimed, “69 Loves Songs.” Recently, Lisa and I were talking about how we love these recordings and how our favorite song changes from time to time. This is my current favorite, on “69 Love Songs,” from one of my favorite bands: The Magnetic Fields.

I was able to sit in the front row of the Kauffman Center to witness the living legend, Mavis Staples. She came up through gospel music, and then secular R&B, when Pops decided to broaden their audience. When you hear The Staple Singers you feel their struggle for equality through beautiful melody. Mavis has brought her voice & spirit to collaborations with The Band, Prince, Dylan. Her collaboration with Ry Cooder, “Down In Mississippi” was a musical masterpiece, of first-hand, civil rights history, in song. She followed that up with a collaboration with Jeff Tweedy, who wrote this perfect song, for Mavis to sing.

I met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinkos at 39th & Rainbow in 1992. Iris came in to copy her press clippings, she was in the process of releasing her debut album. I wasn’t familiar with her music until I saw her on Late Night with Conan O’Brienin 1994, where she performed her song “My Life.” I was blown away. I had video taped the show and I remember replaying that song for anyone that came to visit. I ran into Iris at Classic Cup in Westport. I was sort of star stuck, but she approached me and asked, “How do I Know You?” Our friendship continued because we shared a mutual friend named Anne Winter, who arranged for Iris play a Big Bang Buffet in 1999. Iris also did a benefit for Friends of Community Radio in 2002, and KKFI in 2004. I love Iris! This is one of her first songs.

During the 1950s–1970s he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world and embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage. He publicly denied being gay during his lifetime, and sued those who said he was. Towards the end of his life his chauffeur, Scott Thorson, sued him for palimony. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1987.]

13. Jim Nabors -“It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”

[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.”Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

14. Paul Lynde, Maureen Stapleton, Dick Van Dyke, Bryan Russell – “Kids”

[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

In the 1960s, he worked as an usher at the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin where he sang for the other ushers and maintenance crew on stage in front of the fire curtain after performances. Nomi moved to NYC in 1972. In the late 1970s while performing at Club 57, The Mudd Club, The Pyramid Club, and other venues, Nomi assembled a group of up-and-coming models, singers, artists, and musicians to perform live with him, which at times included Joey Arias, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, John Sex and Kenny Scharf. He also appeared on Manhattan Cable’s TV Party. David Bowie heard about Nomi’s performances in New York and soon met him and Joey Arias at the Mudd Club. Bowie hired them as performers and backup singers for his appearance on Saturday Night Live which aired on December 15, 1979. The band performed “TVC 15”, “The Man Who Sold the World”, and “Boys Keep Swinging”. During the performance of “TVC 15”, Nomi and Arias dragged around a large prop pink poodle with a television screen in its mouth. Nomi was so impressed with the plastic quasi-tuxedo suit that Bowie wore during “The Man Who Sold the World” that he commissioned one to be made for himself. Nomi can be seen wearing the suit on the cover of his self-titled album, as well as during anumber of his music videos. Nomi wore his variant of the outfit, in monochromatic black-and-white with spandex and makeup to match, until the last few months of his life. Girls With Guitars features: KC & Lawrence based Kristie Stremel. Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s lovechild,” armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 70 published songs, Stremel continues to tour with a band and as a solo acoustic. Stremel is described as “Aggressive and provocative, the singer/guitarist leans into her material with the passion of a true believer” by Jim Musser of Harp Magazine.

With her band the 159ers she received the Pitch newspaper’s prestigious Kansas City/Lawrence Area Music Award for both Best New Band and Band of the Year. She has also won the “Best Female Vocalist” in Kansas City awarded by The Pitch Weekly.

After a decade of playing music, singer/songwriter Kristie Stremel and her former band mates from Exit 159 (drummer Rob VanBiber and bassist Jamey Wheeler), along with lead guitarist Scott Cameron, reunited to form Kristie Stremel & The 159ers. After a year of writing new material, “Color Of Stars” (Stremeltone Records) was released Aug. 31, 2010. This 12 song offering, recorded in Springfield, MO and Produced by Lou Whitney.”

Recently Stremel has released several singles including “Don’t’ Do Crazy Anymore” a duet with James Johan and “Ten Little Hens” a song she wrote for kids. She is currently working on a new project and “Getting fired up to record a new album! New songs with some old pals!” So far only her dogs have had the privilege of hearing her new songs.

Jen Foster, from Nashville, TN, an award-winning singer/songwriter who regularly sells out shows across the country. Her video for “Closer To Nowhere” went to #1 on the LOGO Channel and stayed in their Top 10 list for 6 months as well as being a featured song on MTV’s “The Hills.” Her voice has been compared to Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and the Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan, just released “You Stayed”, an EP recording that is atribute to her loving and loyal fans.

Corday will be flying in from Long Beach, CA. Corday has performed at events including Dinah Shore in Palm Springs, Womenfest in Key West, L.A., Sweet Lesbian Cruises, and numerous Gay Pride Festivals. Corday’s latest full-length studio album, Weekend Warrior, is available now on iTunes. The title track snagged Best DIY Video at the RightOutTV Awards. The new album includes the song “Coming Undone,” as heard in the lesbian film “Elena Undone”. Recently Corday just penned “Second Shot” for placement as the theme song in the new lesbian series Second Shot, starring Jill Bennett. Corday is the rock and roll front-woman of her all girl band Kiss Me Deadly, but also has a softer side, as winner of Best Female Acoustic Act and Best Live Band at the Orange County Music Awards.

St. Louis based singer songwriter Summer Osborne has been performing on stage since the age of four. She has been performing her original music since 2005, releasing 7 full-length albums and an EP. Since 2009, Summer has been constantly on tour playing Pridefests in St. Louis, Vancouver, Columbia, Memphis, Springfield, Lexington, Belleville. Summer is a champion of the KC HRC Battle of The Babes – Acoustic Stage. The day Larry Kramer hugged me. The day before the National March on Washington, 1993. It was outside the Capitol Building where Larry Kramer had just passionately delivered a speech to a crowd of LGBT Activists. ACT UP had just organized us in wrapping a giant red ribbon around the Capitol Building. After the building was wrapped, the ribbon broke into hundreds of little pieces. I attached my piece to my ACT UP KC button.

The 67th Annual Tony Awards, will present the Isabelle Stevenson Award to Larry Kramer.

If you believe theatre can change the world, it may be because you know of Larry Kramer.

American playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist, Larry Kramer was born June 25, 1935. He began his career rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists and earned an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of “Women in Love” in 1969.

In 1980 and 1981 Larry Kramer began to witness many his friends becoming sick and dying from the spread of an unknown disease, that became known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which has become the largest private organization to assist people living with AIDS in the world.

Larry Kramer co-founded the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, a direct action, multi-faceted, protest organization credited with changing public health policy and perception of people living with AIDS, HIV and AIDS-related diseases.

Based on his own struggles, in the early years of the AIDS crisis, Larry Kramer wrote about his frustrations with our government’s lethargic response, to do anything to help. Larry Kramer was also frustrated by the gay community itself, criticizing gay men who he felt were in denial of what was killing them. From all of this came Larry Kramer’s nearly auto-biographical play, “The Normal Heart” that focused on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, a gay Jewish-American founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Ned was known and disliked for his loud, angry, public confrontations, in contrast to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner.

The Normal Heart was produced by Joesph Papp at The PublicTheater in NYC in 1985, in a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run that starred Brad Davis in the role of Ned Weeks.

In Kansas City, no professional theatre would do this show. The Normal Heart was produced independently in the Summer of 1991, as the very first production of Actors & Artists Against AIDS, Directed by John McCrite, staged with a cast of professional actors, in the basement of Unity Temple on The Plaza, the production earned critical acclaim and $10,000.00 in ticket sales from 8 performances, all to benefit The Good Samaritan Project.

Later, the play was revived in Los Angeles and London and again Off-Broadway in 2004. The Normal Heart made it’s Broadway debut, in April 2011, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. This year The Normal Heart will launch a national tour. Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Alec Baldwin are joining Mark Ruffalo in the upcoming film of THE NORMAL HEART. Larry Kramer will adapt his script for the movie, and Ryan Murphy, best known for creating GLEE, is set to direct the film.

[In partnership with Oscar winner Peter Allen and Marsha Melamet, Michael Callen wrote his most famous song, “Love Don’t Need a Reason”, which he sang frequently at gay pride and AIDS-related events around the country. Michael Callen (b. April 11, 1955) was a singer, songwriter, composer, author, and AIDS activist. He was a significant architect of the response to the AIDS crisis in the United States. First diagnosed with “Gay related immune deficiency” (GRID) in 1982, Callen quickly became a leader in the response to the epidemic. He was a founding member of the People With AIDS Self-Empowerment Movement among other organizations, and he testified before the President’s Commission on AIDS and both houses of the United States Congress. He was a founding member of the gay male a cappella singing group The Flirtations, with whom he recorded two albums. He also had a solo album, Purple Heart, which a review in The Advocate called “the most remarkable gay independent release of the past decade.” During the last year of his life, Callen recorded over 40 songs. On December 27, 1993, Michael Callen died of AIDS-related complications in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 38.]

The film outlines the intersection of Kansas versus Missouri drivers in such County Fairs as Platte, Cass, and Wyandotte in the Greater Kansas City Metro region. The film is full of car crashes, and bluegrass music. “Civil War on Wheels” premieres tomorrow night, Thursday, May 23 at 7:00 pm, at the Tivoli Theatre in Kansas City.

Civil War On Wheels Premier ~ A documentary about rivalry between Kansas and Missouri demolition derby drivers produced by Patrick Sumnerand Chris Snipes starring derby promoter Greg Clemons and driver/team leader Mac McClanahan. The film outlines the intersection of Kansas versus Missouri drivers in such County Fairs as Platte, Cass, and Wyandotte in the Greater Kansas City Metro region. The film is full of car crashes, and bluegrass music.

KC’s community Balinese gamelan orchestra, Gamelan Genta Kasturi, is celebrating 10 Years, with a special concert, Sat May 18, 4:00 pm, in the Truman Forum of the Plaza Branch of the KC Public Library, 4801 Main St, showcasing material from 10 years.

Director Patrick Alonso Conway joined us to share information on this special concert from Gamelan Genta Kasturi.

“Angels and Demons at Play” was composed by Patrick Alonso Conway for Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project, in partnership with ArtSounds (a collaboration between the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Kansas City Art Institute.)

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, is celebrating 10 Years, in a special Concert, Saturday May 18, 4:00 pm, in the Truman Forum of the Plaza Branch of the KC Public Library, 4801 Main St, KCMO, showcasing material from 10 years, including traditional Balinese and original compositions by founder I Ketút Gedé Asnawa and current director Patrick Alonzo Conway, with visual images by artist Jennifer Lynn Williams and shadow imagery by artist Nihan Yesil.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments, as a distinctentity, built and tuned to stay together – instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighboring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the western most end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Javato the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 34 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the S. of the island.

Patrick Alonzo Conway went to Bali.

With a population recorded as 3,891,428 in the 2010 census, and currently 4.22 million, the island is home to most of Indonesia’s Hindu minority. In the 2000 census about 92.29% of Bali’s population adhered to Balinese Hinduism while most of the remainder, follow Islam. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metal working, and music. A tourist haven for decades, Bali has seen a further surge in tourist numbers in recent years.

“Hello Again” Co-Director and Spinning Tree Theatre Managing Director, Andy Parkhurst and Kansas City based professional actor, Charles Fugate who plays the role of The Senator in Hello Again, joinedus on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

“Hello Again” is the 6th show of Spinning Tree Theatre. Andy founded this new professional theatre company with partner Michael Grayson and have produced several shows and musicals that have made their Kansas City debuts. Andy talked about what moved the company to produce “Hello Again” here in Kansas City.

Produced 20 years ago, this show featured John Cameron Mitchell who later went on to create a little show called “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Short Bus,” along with Broadway queen, Donna Murphey, and Malcolm Gets.

“Hello Again” is billed as an “Adult Musical”

Charles most recently performed in Spinning Tree Theatre’s Kansas City Premiere of “Shipwrecked! last February. Charles has worked at almost every theatre in Kansas City. Charles talked about his experience with Spinning Tree Threatre.

Charles Fugate plays the role of The Senator. The characters in the show all have names like: the Young Thing, the soldier, the whore

Mike Webber is an encyclopedic musical jukebox, a music lover, you met at that record store, that helped you find that special song, that you could only hum a few bars for him to hear. His faith in music and truth guided him as he grew up in KC, spent childhood Summers in the Mississippi Delta, “came of age” working in area record stores, of the 70s and 80s, including: Caper’s Corner Records & Tapes at 47th & Mission, PennyLane, and Music Exchange. Mike went to college at KU and TulaneUniversity. He has chronicled and sometimes photographed many musical greats. Mike got married, raised a family, served time in Iraq, and has continued lifelong friendships with many local and national musicians. Mike and his wife Marta are moving to Austin, Texas in June.

Mike Webber grew up in KC but talked about his summer childhood experiences in the Mississippi Delta (Cleveland) as part of the Memphis media market listening to WHBQ in Memphis. In the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, the radio informed his musical tastes, but also influenced social/political outlook. Mixed in with some great childhood memories were many moments that made us wince even then.

Mike returned to live in Mississippi (Jackson) again in the early 90’s and had the chance to see BB King, the Staple Singers & others perform hometown gigs.

Mike Webber told us the story about photographing Pops Staples in Drew, MS and giving the photograph to Mavis Staples at the Kaufman Center last year.

“P.S. I Love You” – The Beatles – The Big Bang!

Mike Webber was born in March 1964, one month after the Beatles arrived in America. He discovered that the first albums in the house that weren’t children’s records were his brother’s copies of “Meet The Beatles” and “The Early Beatles.” The first record he ever asked for was the 45″ of “Hey Jude” when he was 4. Mike started asking for nothing but Beatles records for every birthday and Christmas. He had a check-list provided by Capitol Records, which is how he learned of things like non-LP B-sides. While he thought he had all of the Beatles records “inexistence,” he discovered bootlegs at a flea market in Memphis and then imports at Capers Corner! He realized that he’ll never have EVERYTHING. Everybody who knew Mike, his family, teachers & classmates – identified him with his fanaticism for The Beatles. All these years later, they still do.

[In February 1963, the Beatles recorded 10 songs during asingle marathon studio session for their debut LP, Please Please Me. The album was supplemented by the 4 tracks already released on their first 2 singles. Parlophone rush-released the album in the United Kingdom to capitalize on thesuccess of singles “Please, Please, Me” and “Love Me Do.” Of the album’s 14 songs, 8 were written by Lennon–McCartney.]

Mike talked about a story specific to “PS I Love You”, related to a skating rink in Mission, where a 10-year old Mike Webber decided to himself that if the skate parlor deejay played a good song, he would ask a girl to skate with him. The Deejay then played the Beatles,”P.S. I Love You,” Mike took the sign and headed toward the young lady to propose, but he slipped and took a header on the concrete bench.

Capers Corner provided a spontaneous meeting place for grieving Elvis & John Lennon fans who needed some kind of communal feeling and didn’t know where to go but knew they wouldn’t be judged in a place like that.

“Go Now” from Wings, but sung by Denny Laine, formerly of the Moody Blues, on Wings Over America, the live recording of Wings 1976 concert. This concert is still Mike’s all-time favorite live music event and certainly among the most memorable in Kansas City concert history. McCartney & Wings played the Kemper Arena in 1976. Mike’s first and third concerts were Elvis Presley at Kemper Arena. He was so glad to have seen the King, but he was always first and foremost a Beatles fan, so seeing McCartney – the first Beatle in KC in 12 years at that point – was earth shaking. McCartney was riding a wave of success with “Silly Love Songs” and “Let ‘Em In” both in the charts and in those pre-internet days, we didn’t need “spoiler alerts”. McCartney hadn’t toured America as a solo act before, and in his earlier European tours he hadn’t played any of his Beatles era compositions, so when he played that familiar piano intro to “Lady Madonna”, Kemper shook. In a long set-list full of solo and Wings hits, he only played four Beatles songs total but that was enough. Former Moody Blue Denny Laine was a member of Wings, so it was a huge bonus to also get to hear “Go Now” one of Mike’s favorite songs – live as well.

7. Wings – “Go Now”

[A song composed by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett. It was first recorded in 1964 by Bessie Banks, and then most successfully by The Moody Blues. Wings over America is a live album by the band Wings, in its initial release, it was a triple album and included a poster of the band, which peaked at number 1 in the US. The album was a collection of recordings gathered from Wings’ Wings Over America part of their world tour. A re-mastered recording, is set to be released, in May 2013. Denny Laine sang this song with The Moody Blues and also on tour as a member of Wings.]

That Wings show was atypical in that instead of the usual ticket outlets, the initial ticket sales were entirely at Kemper Arena. Mike’s brother & his friend Keith Copaken’s father, Paul Copaken, went to wait for tickets but the show sold out. They were crushed. Later, the Copakens were able to get “limited view” tickets behind the stage. Mike was already a customer at Capers Corner, barely 12 years old, but he used to spend all of his lunch money there, and they knew how badly he wanted to see Wings. A couple of weeks before the show, the guy who always helped Mike buy import EPs there (locked in an under bin) called Mike’s home to say he’d found a couple of great lower level tickets at face value. So Mike and his friend Keith wound up in Section 120, Lower Level and Corky Carrel became a lifelong friend with whom Mike is still in weekly contact.

Mike’s other memorable Kansas City concerts of the period:

1) Rolling Stones’ “Tattoo You” shows, in 1981, with the Mick Taylor appearance, which Mike and his friends had been told, might happen by Mick Taylor, himself, whose autograph they sought, at an Alvin Lee concert at the Uptown.

2) Elton John’s “Jump Up” show at Starlight Theater that was broadcast worldwide on Westwood One Radio Network.

3) The Kinks’ “Low Budget” shows at Memorial Hall- twice on the same tour’s beginning and end.

4) The Jacksons’ “Victory Tour” – which was really more memorable as Michael Jackson’s Thriller tour.

“Cynical Girl” – Marshall Crenshaw – While Mike was working at Capers, Marshall Crenshaw released what many still consider one of the best debut albums that anyone ever made in any genre. That song – and the album on which it appeared – still puts Mike’s head back in high school. Mike took some photos of Crenshaw playing the old Parody Hall a few years laterand last year when he played a solo show at Knuckleheads, Mike gave him copies. Crenshaw was genuinely moved by the images and appreciative of the set Mike gave him. Mike also had one that he’d taken with Crenshaw when he did an in-store at Capers Corner that had been so poorly attended that Mike had tocall his high school classmates and tell them to come in and act like fans.

8. Marshall Crenshaw – “Cynical Girl”

[Born in Detroit, November 11, 1953, singer, songwriter andguitarist best known for his song “Someday, Someway.” Crenshaw’s music has roots in classic soul music, British Invasion song craft, Burt Bacharach and Buddy Holly — the latter to whom Crenshaw was often compared inthe early days of his career, and whom he portrayed in the 1987 film La Bamba. Crenshaw is also a noted guitarist who uses off beat chord progressions (almost verging towards jazz) and concise solos.]

Capers Corner was the best job any kid could have had during that period in this town. Mike would go hang out at his job on his off-days. Reliable access to concert tickets improved his high school dating average. Bars would let them in without ID, albeit you could drink at 18 then, so Mike was only cheating by two years. Mike got jobs for a couple of his best friends from high school and was hanging out with the older guys who worked at Capers. Being over in Wyandotte County, you met a different group of people than over in Shawnee Mission East, so it just had everything going for it. When Mike gets nostalgic for those years, it’s really less about high school than about working at this really great record store where he got to hang out with his friends, meet touring artists, had the best possible influences for budding tastes in any genre of music, and then all the intangibles.

Mike Webber shared a few stories about the Kansas Bureau of Investigation undercover agents trying to bust the head shop inside Capers. Mike also talked about his high school counselor wanting Kenny Rogers tickets.

We didn’t have time to hear Mike’s stories of partying with the Grateful Dead and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

11:20 – “So Blue About You” – True Believers

Mike stopped working at Capers when he started college at KU and he wanted a job where he could work in Lawrence during the school year and in KC during the summers, so he started working at PennyLane. Mike worked for and with a lot of great characters: LeRoi, Saul Tucker, April Fletcher, and Mike Soden who now lives in Austin. Capers always held a unique place in Mike’s heart, but PennyLane was great and had so many different locations. It was never boring. Working in downtown Lawrence wasn’t much like working at the Broadway store. They had in-store appearances by bands like Camper VanBeethoven, but then Mike also learned that the first time David George ever played an in-store, it was our Broadway location.

While Mike was working at PennyLane on Broadway, He heard about this great band that was playing around the corner at the Lone Star. He had actually met one of the guys – Alejandro Escovedo – when he was in Rank & File but hell, he had barely been old enough to drive at that time. So by now, Mike was in college and after that poorly-attended show at the Lone Star, what seemed like all of the coolest people he knew from here, and the guys in True Believers, started this friendship that continues through to today. They’d come through town pretty regularly until about 1987 and Mike would get together with them every time. They had some incredibly memorable moments – not least being an occasion when they hung out with Martha Reeves, Mary Wells, David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations – who happened to be staying at the same hotel. Like Marshall Crenshaw, True Believers seemed like a “can’t miss” act that somehow just couldn’t get over the hump at the time. Now, they’re playing together again in Austin and Mike is still in touch with them, so the last page on all this hasn’t been written yet.

After PennyLane (and KU), Mike worked at Music Exchange for a year while not planning his next move. On a whim, Mike took the GMAT and did well enough that Tulane University in New Orleans offered him a full academic scholarship, so Mike moved to New Orleans and never again drew a paycheck from the music business, but remained an ardent music fan.

“Message to Michael” – Dionne Warwick – was co-written by Kansas City-born Burt Bacharach. Mike’s habit of championing all things Kansas City really was pronounced whenever he lived away from KC. At Tulane, Mike had a fellow student ask, “what in the hell is wrong with you?” that he was such a partisan of his hometown. Mike was born and mostly raised in KC and although he had left before and is now leaving again, Mike has never regretted having grown up here. Unfortunately, Kansas City happens to straddle two dysfunctional states, but the impression left by when and where Mike grew up is what caused his wife & he to move back to KC about 9 years ago to finish raising their kids. Oh yeah, the wife and kids …Tying back to that Dionne Warwick recording, the first line of that song is “spread your wings for New Orleans” and that’s really what Mike did.

The song’s lyrics, are addressed to a bluebird, by a woman, in Kentucky, whose sweetheart is vainly pursuing musical stardom in New Orleans. The woman asks the blue bird to take a message to Michael, asking him to return to her.]

Coincidentally, the two gender-specific versions of that song are “Message to Michael” and “Message to Martha” and New Orleans is where Mike would meet his wife, Marta, and where their first-born arrived. Their second child was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Both finished high school at Shawnee Mission East where Mike had graduated in 1982. New Orleans was transformative. Mike really went down there still a kid in very many ways, but he left with a wife and daughter. That city and the woman he married there, turned the boy into a man.

“Rosalie” – Alejandro Escovedo – Mike’s wife is Mexican and this song is one of Marta’s favorites, written by Austin, Texaslocal legend Alejandro Escovedo – previously discussed as a True Believer – whore mains a friend of theirs. Austin is the city where Mike most wanted to live but hadn’t until now.

Austin is also near where Marta was raised in San Antonio, so they’ll be near some of her family. They’ll be straight down I-35 and will still see a lot of their KC friends when they play in Austin – many during the MidCoast takeover at SXSW. That means a lot to Mike because particularly during this last 9-year stint in KC, they’ve made so many very dear friends, including a lot of KC’s music scene. Mike has been watching the KC music scene for over 30 years and it is his considered opinion that KC has not had a comparable level of local talent, like it currently possesses, since he’s been aware. Itis the one thing that he feels is so much better than when he was working in the record stores here. Mike is comforted by the knowledge that their couches and spare rooms will be a destination for many touring KC acts in years to come.

We’ve been playing songs to help move the conversation along but while all of them are favorites, several songs that automatically feature in any list Mike makes have not been played, so perhaps we could wind up with three that usually go 1-2-3 in my all-time list of favorites (which bars Beatles songs as part of my own personal Fairness Doctrine).

All three of these songs have always had a hold on Mike, even before he was experienced to know what they really meant. A couple of notes from any of them and he is back in his dad’s car in the 60’s, hearing music on a single speaker in the dashboard and probably waiting for burgers and onion rings at Sydney’s on the Plaza. Mike loved these songs as a toddler but only when he got a little older and your heart gets broken, a parent dies, other loved ones die, you talk to a doctor about a tumor … those are the experiences that will cause you to get in a car, happen to catch one of these songs on the radio and just melt in a way that is crushing yet reminds you that you’re alive as well.

We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our show last year on April 25. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. Last year veteran drummer Stephanie Williams joined the band onDrums, along with Travis Earnshaw who joined the band on Bass.
