[Co written with Brian Eno. David Byrne’s first solo studio album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Even though since then he has released albums with Brian Eno, Fat Boy Slim, and St. Vincent. The album is his 11th outside of his work with Talking Heads. The new album is one part of a larger multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful which aims to give reasons for being happy and optimistic in spite of political strife and environmental problems. The project was entitled after the Ian Dury song “Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3)”. David Byrne writes: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking. This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses. Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on. I have no prescriptions or surefire answers, but I sense that I am not the only one looking and asking, wondering and still holding onto some tiny bit of hope, unwilling to succumb entirely to despair or cynicism.”]

[Mysterious Clouds is one of the musical projects of Kansas City, Kansas based post-punk psychedelic musical artists, Dedric Moore and Delaney Moore and special guests. For this track and one other on the new EP the band collaborated with Taryn Blake Miller a Lawrence Kansas based musician and songwriter who records as Your Friend. The Delaney brothers are also founders of the band Monta At Odds. The band writes: “While crawling around in the murk of (their last release) Panic on the Noon Meridian, Delaney fed the band a healthy dose of underground West Coast psych. This helped the band see a feel good light that helped them recover from the heaviness of Panic. Doo-wop is a genre of rhythm and blues music that was developed in African-American communities in the East Coast of the United States in the 1940s, achieving mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented styles of the time. Singer Bill Kenny is often called the “Godfather of Doo-wop” for his introducing the “top and bottom” format which featured a high tenor singing the lead and a bass singer reciting the lyrics in the middle of the song. Doo-wop features vocal group harmony, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, sometimes little or no instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics

From the outset, singers gathered on street corners, and in subways, generally in groups of three to six. They sang a cappella arrangements, and used wordless onomatopeia to mimic instruments since instruments were little used: the bass singing “bom-bom-bom”, a guitar rendered as “shang-a-lang” and brass riffs as “dooooo -wop-wop”. For instance, “Count Every Star” by The Ravens (1950), includes vocalizations imitating the “doomph, doomph” plucking of a double bass. This art dates to The Mills Brothers, who first came to fame in the 1930s with their mimicking of instrumental music. Radio, gramophone, and cinema inspired imitation in many U.S. cities.

The late 1940s and early 1950s brought the so-called “bird groups”; The Swallows, the Ravens, The Orioles, The Penguins, The Crows, The Flamingos, The Blue Jays, The Cardinals, and The Larks. A number of band names are also drawn from cars (The Edsels, The Cadillacs, The Fleetwoods, The Impalas, and Little Anthony and the Imperials). The Orioles helped develop the doo-wop sound with their hits “It’s Too Soon to Know” (1948) and “Crying in the Chapel” (1953). Doo-wop scored 1951 R&B chart hits such as “Sixty Minute Man” by Billy Ward and His Dominoes, “Where Are You?” by The Mello-Moods, “The Glory of Love” by The Five Keys, “Shouldn’t I Know” by The Cardinals, “I Will Wait” by the Four Buddies, and “Will You Be Mine”, by The Swallows.

The term “doo-wop” first appeared in print in 1961 in The Chicago Defender; fans of the music coined the term during the height of a vocal harmony resurgence. The phrase was attributed to radio disc jockey Gus Gossert but Gossert suggested “doo-wop(p) was already in use [before me] to categorize the music in California.”

The first record to use the syllables “doo-wop” in the refrain was the 1955 hit “When You Dance” by The Turbans (Herald Records H-458). Previously, the backing vocal “doo-wop” is heard in The Delta Rhythm Boys’ 1945 recording of “Just A-Sittin’ And A-Rockin”, The Clovers’ 1953 release “Good Lovin'” (Atlantic Records 1000) and in the chorus of Carlyle Dundee & The Dunde

1958 also saw the rise of Italian American doo-wop groups. Like African-Americans, the Italian Americans generally attended church, where they gained singing experience, and lived in urban neighborhoods, where they would sing on street corners. By the late 1950s, Italian American street corner doo-wop groups were seen in cities such as New York, especially the Bronx and Brooklyn. Some of the Italian American groups with national chart hits included: Dion and the Belmonts, in 1958, with “I Wonder Why”, and Top #5 hits “Teenager in Love” and “Where or When”; The Four Seasons; The Capris with “There’s a Moon Out Tonight”, in 1960; The Earls; The Chimes; The Demensions; The Elegants; The Mystics; The Duprees; Vito & the Salutations; The Gaylords; Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge; The Regents; Nino and the Ebb Tides; The Del-Satins; The Videls; most of the members of The Passions; and The Chaperones. Other Italian American groups included Randy & the Rainbows, who charted with their Top #10 1963 single “Denise”.

The contribution of Hispanics is often overlooked. Early, especially in U.S. East Coast cities, Puerto Ricans were lead singers in some groups with black and white members, including The Crests, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Five Discs and the Tune Weavers. “Racially integrated” groups with both black and white performers, included The Del-Vikings, who hit big in 1957 with “Come Go With Me” and “Whispering Bells”; The Crests, whose “16 Candles” appeared in 1958, and The Impalas, whose “Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)” was a hit in 1959. All-white doo-wop groups were also appearing: The Mello-Kings’ 1956 “Tonight, Tonight” and The Diamonds’ chart-topping “Little Darlin'” in 1957, The Skyliners’ 1959 “Since I Don’t Have You” and 1960 “This I Swear”, The Tokens’ 1961 “Tonight I Fell In Love” and “I Love My Baby”, all saw success.

Female doo wop singers were unusual in the early days. Lillian Leach, lead singer of the Mellows from 1953 to 1958, helped pave the way for women and is often cited as an influence by later performers.

The peak of doo-wop might have been in the early 1960s with the most notable hits being Dion’s “Runaround Sue”, “The Wanderer”, “Lovers Who Wander” and “Ruby Baby” and The Marcels’ “Blue Moon”. There was a revival of the nonsense-syllable form of doo-wop in the early 1960s, with popular records by The Marcels, The Rivingtons, and Vito & the Salutations. A few years later, the genre reached the self-referential stage, with songs about the singers (“Mr. Bass Man” by Johnny Cymbal) and the songwriters (“Who Put the Bomp?” by Barry Mann), in 1961. Other important groups, including The Coasters, The Drifters, The Midnighters, and The Platters, helped link the doo-wop style to the mainstream, and to the future sound of soul music. The style is heard in the music of The Miracles, particularly in their early hits such as “Got A Job” (an answer song to “Get a Job”), “Bad Girl”, “Who’s Loving You”, “(You Can) Depend on Me”, and “Ooo Baby Baby”. The style is also heard in the early days of The Famous Flames, led by James Brown; the group recorded several doo-wop hits, including “Please, Please, Please”, “Bewildered”, “I Don’t Mind”, and their hit cover of The “5” Royales’ “Think all entering the Top#10, as well as R&B Number #1 Try Me

Doo-wop’s influence continued in soul, pop, and rock groups of the 1960s, including The Four Seasons, girl groups, and vocal surf music performers such as Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys. In the Beach Boys’ case, the doo-wop influence is evident in early hits such as “Surfin'” and “Surfer Girl”, and in albums recorded within their psychedelic era, during which the group experimented and innovated with the human voice as an instrument[15] in a self-described effort to “expand modern vocal harmony”.

As with most American popular music genres of the time, doo-wop’s mainstream popularity was decimated by the British Invasion of the mid-1960s

8. Joni Mitchell – “You Turn Me On I’m A Radio”

[Joni Mitchell originally wrote the song in response to her record label’s desire for her to write a hit song. Mitchell reveals her purpose on lines such as, “And I’m sending you out this signal here, I hope you can pick it up loud and clear”. She believed that including words in the song about radio themes would convince stations to play the recording. The song was recorded in preparation for Mitchell’s upcoming fifth studio album in Hollywood, California, United States at A&M Studios. Although Graham Nash, David Crosby, and Neil Young all contributed to the recording session for the song, only the harmonica piece performed by Graham Nash was included on the official release. “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” was released as a single in November 1972 via Asylum Records. The song became Mitchell’s first top-ten hit in Canada, reaching the tenth position on the RPM Top Singles chart. Additionally, the single became her first top-forty hit in the United States, reaching number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside North America, “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” peaked within the top-forty on the Australian Kent Music Report chart. The single was included on Mitchell’s fifth studio effort For the Roses, which was issued in November 1972. Released between her 2 biggest commercial and critical successes – “Blue” and “Court & Spark”. In 2007 it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. “For the Roses” was Mitchell’s farewell to the business; she took an extended break for a year after. The album was critically acclaimed with The New York Times saying “Each of Mitchell’s songs on For the Roses is a gem glistening with her elegant way with language, her pointed splashes of irony & her perfect shaping of images. Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.”]

Belle Plaine is a singer, a songwriter and an inventive musician who was raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 54.

We just heard “Golden Ring,” the first single from her upcoming LP Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath and is in collaboration with fellow Saskatchewanian, Megan Nash. True to Plaine’s genre-bending style, the song pairs a surf-era baritone guitar to an Everly Brothers inspired harmony.

Belle Plaine, Blake Berglund have split their time in the last year between Canada and the Appalachians promoting Berglund’s 2017 release, Realms, and have been direct support for Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, The Dead South, Jason Eady and Dwight Yoakam.

Plaine appeared on Colter Wall’s Imaginary Appalachia (2015) and serves up a hybrid of American music: her mix of folk, country, jazz and blues was showcased at Folk Alliance International in February 2017 and at Americana Fest in September 2017 to a full house at Nashville’s 12th and Porter.

Berglund’s album, Realms, has carved out its place among critics. Beatroute Magazine called it “the most ambitious Canadian country record of 2017 and should certainly be regarded as one of the best,” where popular online blog, Bandsintown says “Berglund’s psychedelic country is changing the game.” Realms applies the story arc of the hero’s journey to a good ol’ boy character – the listener follows the Everyman from ignorance to enlightenment, and eventually to reincarnation. [11th studio album from Destroyer from Vancouver, British Columbia fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar and formed in 1995. Destroyer songs are characterized by abstract, poetic lyrics and idiosyncratic vocals. The band’s discography draws on a variety of musical influences, resulting in albums that can sound markedly distinct from one another; in Bejar’s words, “That’s kind of my goal: to start from scratch every time.” Daniel Bejar was born October 4, 1972. Bejar has gained widespread popularity through his musical collaborations with Vancouver indie-rock band The New Pornographers, but has released far more material as the frontman of his band Destroyer. He is renowned for his poetic and often cryptic lyrics as well as his unorthodox vocals. Bejar’s father was a Spanish physicist and his mother was a Spanish teacher. Growing up, Bejar moved frequently, and as an adult he has resided in Canada and Spain. Bejar attended University of British Columbia for three years: “To my credit, I eventually dropped out; to my discredit, I waited three years to do it. I was taking mostly English and Philosophy classes, fooling myself into thinking I might be an academic.”]

[Brodie Rush is a songwriter, musician, singer, organizer, artist, film maker, music video creator. Over 20 years ago KC native, Brodie Rush formed the experimental, psychedelic, prog-pop band. In 1996, Be/Non recorded two sets of songs in a small home studio in Lawrence, Kansas, that would become their first two EPs released on cassette. Be/Non, The band has had more members than Spinal Tap, but Brodie has remained the only consistent member, songwriter and producer. Be/Non personnel: 2007, Brodie Rush – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Bass, Percussion, Drums; Ben Ruth – Bass, Upright Bass, Vocals; Adam Stotts – Guitar, Vocals; John Huff – Keyboards, Synths, Vocals; Adam Phillips – Drums (although Ryan Shank – played Drums on this track.) Dedicated to: Failed marriages throughout time and space. The troubled “Freedom Palace” LP was recorded over 10 years ago in the summer of 2007 by Paul Malinowski and Brodie Rush in Kansas City, Missouri. Anodyne Records had commissioned Be/Non to re-record songs from, “RAN” and “Esperanto At The Pantheon, Incognito” along with other unreleased material. The music from the title track “Freedom Palace” was written by John Huff and had the album been released, would have been the first Be/Non composition not penned by Brodie Rush. Be/Non was a 5 piece before recording negotiations began in 2007. Directly before preproduction, the band had lost its drummer of 3 years and Be/Non was actively searching for a replacement. Between Brodie filling in on drums for two songs and Billy Brimblecom playing drums on another track, Be/Non asked Adam Phillips of The Architects to drum on the album’s remaining songs. The album was mostly recorded at Westend Studios in Kansas City and at Brodie’s home studio The Gold Room. After tracking 97% of the album, the project was taken to Studio G in Brooklyn New York for mixing by Joel Hamilton. 10 days later, the album was mixed and ready for duplication. No formal album covers had been decided on. John Huff had an idea of a Unipegadong by a nebula in space, while Brodie was thinking a castle floating in mid air. The first cover idea was mostly just pointing arrows going in all directions. Emotionally that was probably the closest to the mindset of that recording. The album “Freedom Palace” was never pressed or released. Because a contractual arrangement could not be agreed upon between Anodyne Records and Be/Non, the band would not see an album released until 2009, “A Mountain Of Yeses”, 11 years after it’s last release in 1998. “Freedom Palace” is dismissed by the band as a complete failure. Ultimately not having rights to the recordings, the inability to reach a contractual agreement with Anodyne Records and unhappiness with the final mix led to the disbanding of the “Freedom Palace” line up in early 2008. Reclusive, secluded and freshly divorced, a depressed Brodie Rush stopped all live performances for the next two years. Spending time to construct the concept record “A Mountain Of Yeses” as a solo endeavor under the Be/Non band moniker. Then, six years later in 2014, John Hulston of Anodyne Records graciously gave Brodie Rush full rights to the “Freedom Palace” recordings and masters. Be/Non has since tried numerous times to re-record the material for a proper release, but never could fully accomplish this task. Finally, for the entire world, for better or for worse, Be/Non and Haymaker Records would like to present the final mix of “Freedom Palace” the way it was originally intended. Be/Non adamantly renounces the production, mix and performances on these recordings, with few exceptions. The album was mixed and recorded during a dizzying haze of drug and alcohol abuse. The lyrics, the tone and the feel of the record is very unfocused, angry and misguided. This record does not reflect the proper sonic soundscape or performances Brodie Rush and Be/Non had intended whatsoever. “Freedom Palace” was full of rehashed versions of songs better left to their previous incarnations. “Moi Ou Toi” from the 7″ is a remake from “Freedom Palace” but the “FP” version is a remake of the original “Ran” version. Complicated. In fact ALL of the recordings on “FP” are remakes from “Ran” and “Esperanto.” “Do the Heat” and “Lucy” are again remakes of the “Ran” and “Esperanto” versions. The version of “Ice Fight” on “FP” I think… is different than the B-Side to “Moi Ou Toi”. A different remix with other instruments. We had two different versions from 2015. The Kraftwerk reference was unintentional. John Huff started playing that back in 2006 but hadn’t heard the Kraftwerk song until I played it for him in 2015. He just did that and thought he was cool. I hadn’t heard that tune until 2010 or so. It was an accident. There is an unreleased, unfinished song called “No God Of Mine” I recorded in 2002 on my 8 track that when I tried to remake it in 2007 with Mike Cochran on drums, John heard it and played me a song from the band YWKMBT Trail Of Dead from 2005 that was almost identical even the timing on the changes. The vocal melody was different tho. I got so disturbed by it that I stop working on the song altogether. “Garlic”, “In The Nighttime” “More Than Enough” and “Current And The Rind” were all part of an unreleased collection called “Enhance The Smoky” from 2000. Same year “Tenderfoot” was written.]

The 7 other members go by the names of Harry, Emily, Ruby, B, Tucan, Soul, and Robert. The group, started with members from all over the world including The United States, Japan, South Korea, London, Australia, and New Zealand, makes original internet-age electronically-tinged indie pop music. Bandmembers Harry, Emily, Ruby, B, Tucan, Soul, and Robert were all longtime friends who decided it was finally time to work together. Harry and Emily met Orono during one of their old band’s Japan shows (she attended as a fan), and they struck up a Facebook friendship with their future bandmate. After discovering she could sing, they invited her to add lyrics and vocals to a demo they’d been working on for a new project at the beginning of 2017.]

A DC native, Lesley has a Masters in Urban Planning from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters in International Relations from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. Aside from the East Coast, she’s lived and worked in Uzbekistan, India and Guinea. Here in KC, she also serves on the Board of BikeWalkKC. 9. David Byrne – “Everybody’s Coming To My House”

[Co written with Brian Eno. David Byrne’s first solo studio album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Even though since then he has released albums with Brian Eno, Fat Boy Slim, and St. Vincent. The album is his 11th outside of his work with talking Heads. The new album is one part of a larger multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful which aims to give reasons for being happy and optimistic in spite of political strife and environmental problems. The project was entitled after the Ian Dury song “Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3)”. David Byrne writes: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking. This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses. Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on. I have no prescriptions or surefire answers, but I sense that I am not the only one looking and asking, wondering and still holding onto some tiny bit of hope, unwilling to succumb entirely to despair or cynicism.”]

[Sufjan Stevens (SOOF-yan) was born July 1, 1975, and is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His debut album A Sun Came was released in 2000 on the Asthmatic Kitty label which he cofounded with his stepfather. He is perhaps best known for his 2005 album Illinois, which hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the single “Chicago” from that album. Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there until the age of nine, when his family moved to Petoskey, in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. He was raised by his father Rasjid and his stepmother Pat, only occasionally visiting his mother, Carrie, in Oregon after she married her second husband Lowell Brams. (Brams later became the head of Stevens’ record label Asthmatic Kitty).He attended the Detroit Waldorf School, Petoskey High School and Interlochen Arts Academy, and graduated from Harbor Light Christian School. He then attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and earned a Masters of Fine Arts from The New School in New York City. Sufjan is a Persian name meaning “comes with a sword”. It predates Islam and most famously belonged to Abu Sufyan, a figure from early Islamic history. The name was given to Stevens by the founder of Subud, an inter-faith spiritual community to which his parents belonged when he was born. A multi-instrumentalist, Stevens is known for his use of the banjo, but also plays guitar, piano, drums, xylophone, and several other instruments, often playing all of these on his albums through the use of multitrack recording. While in school, he studied the oboe and English horn, which he also plays on his albums. Stevens did not learn to play the guitar until his time at Hope College. Stevens lives in Kensington, Brooklyn, in New York City, where he makes up the Brooklyn staff of Asthmatic Kitty Records.]

11:15 – Interview with Ryan Wilks & Tim J. Harte

Ryan Wilks is a Kansas City based artist who’s work has explored gender issues, queer erotica, femininity and sexuality. His new exhibit, Here Where You Wish, is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, 2018. Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way being crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish. Tim J Harte is composing ritual based sounds/music for the event. The 40 square feet altar is being constructed by Sean Prudden and Ryan Wilks, to house the objects that people bring to the piece.

From Ryan’s press materials: Altars are typically resurrected to pay homage to a historical event or to worship deities. This altar is intended to serve as a nondenominational safe-space for personal expression and reflection. Created for everyone, by everyone. People from all walks of life are encouraged to write down a wish and leave it on the altar. A wish, a non-religious prayer, opens us up to a child-like connection to the invisible and allows us to gently believe even if just for a second that what we most desire can and will come true if we are bold enough to speak its name.

2017 was a hard year for all of us. No matter what side of the protest lines we stand, we do so because we are uneasy, angry, afraid, and unwilling to compromise what we think is right. There is a need to create a safe and sacred space for all of us to feel hope in. To believe in the power of the individual and of a wish.

The altar will be up for 3 months and will grow substantially in its aesthetic as people leave behind a wish on paper and/or an object. Wilks will be rolling up the paper wishes and tying them to hundreds of feather sculptures rotating above the altar, stirring the energy of the wishes. Here Where You Wish will provide a space for internal dialogue and reflection. As the installation is in a heavily-trafficked public library, attending participants will contribute to the interactive aspects of the installation. Additionally, Wilks has plans to utilize and honor the objects others leave in the space by publishing a book, which will be a literary and visual documentation of what Kansas City is wishing for in 2018.

Risks and challenges

Every project comes with its own unique risks and challenges:

Foreseeably people will want to know where their objects that they have left at the altar will end up. We are open to suggestions! Obviously since Here Where You Wish is in a public space, leaving behind your grandmothers broach is not encouraged if your heart is intent on getting it back once the installation is complete. People may feel connected to certain objects and take them with them. This is not necessarily the goal here, but it may happen, and the Library nor anyone involved in the project can be held responsible for missing objects. Items left should hold some emotional weight with the individual but not to the degree that letting it go with a wish would cause regret.

The objects at the end of the project will be repurposed respectfully, and possibly a part of a more permanent installation in a public space.

There is also the vulnerability of writing down a wish, and people may not want their wish shared in a book; there will be verbiage at the installation that lets people know these are anonymous wishes and to not add information that you would not feel comfortable being published, such as a name. There is something beautiful though, in letting such a vulnerable thing as a wish, be shared with the world, because for every wish there are thousands of people wishing the same wish.

There will be verbiage explaining that objects such as weapons, alcohol, drugs, and food are not welcomed to be placed upon the altar.
Ryan Wilks will be coming in twice weekly to ensure that these requests are fulfilled as will library staff.

[Produced by Stevie Wonder under the name “El Toro Negro” to circumvent Motown’s refusal to allow him to produce the record for Epic. Minnie Julia Riperton-Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), known professionally as Minnie Riperton, was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single “Lovin’ You” and her five-octave coloratura soprano. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the “Queen of the whistle register”. Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her no. 1 single, “Lovin’ You”. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis, but did not disclose she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society’s Courage Award which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of cancer on July 12, 1979 at age 31.]

The album was recorded at the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and while working on it, Staples commuted back and forth between the Loft (on Chicago’s North Side) and her home on Chicago’s South Side.]

4. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear – “Runaways” (LIVE)

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, performed LIVE in our 90.1 FM studios. Madisen Ward & the Mama Bear are Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward. They are a modern soulful/folk music duo. Performing mostly all original music.

Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother. Last year Madisen Ward and “The Mama Bear” (his mom) – Ruth Ward recorded and released their EP, “We Burned The Cane Field.”

Madisen wrote about the release “We Burned the Cabe Field” saying, “My Mother and I play music together; not because of the relation, but because it’s what works best. This is the sound that naturally emerges when we play together, so we went with it.”

Ruth and Madisen talked about how they ended up recording with Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios.

The cover of “We Burned The Cane Field,” is a black and white photograph of a woman and three small children, each holding a box of cracker jacks, in the narrow street of an Japanese neighborhood market area. The photo is of Madisen’s paternal grandmother, his father, aunt and uncle.

10. The Bad Ideas – “Dead in My Head”
from: Lesson #1 / Independent / March 8, 2013
[Full length debut recording from the Kansas City based punk band, formed in October 2011. They’ve written all original songs and are influenced by post-hardcore, punk, and early pop punk. Their EP, Worse Thoughts, was one of our favorite recordings of 2012. Breaka Dawn on lead vocals; Britt Adair on Guitar, Back Up Vocals, Caitlin on Bass, back up vocals. The Bad ideas joined s last year on July 11.]

11. Schwervon! – “Cougar Pride”

[Schwervon! is Nan who plays drums and Matt who plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years and have just relocated to KC. Last year they opened for both The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. They recorded Courage with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley who has worked with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power.]

12. Rush – “Finding My Way”
from: Rush / Mercury Records / 1974
[Debut album by Canadian band. Original drummer John Rutsey performed all drum parts on the album, but was unable to go on extended tours because of diabetes and left the band after the album was released. Rutsey wrote some lyrics for the debut, but never submitted them to the band and some new lyrics had to be thrown together. He was soon replaced by Neil Peart. Rush was inducted into the rock and roll Hall of fame this year.]

13. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – “The Sky is Crying”
from: The Sky is Crying / Epic / November 5, 1991
[Released about one year after Vaughan’s death in 1990, the album features ten previously unreleased tracks, originally recorded between 1984 and 1989. Only one title, “Empty Arms” (complete reprisal), appeared on any of the group’s previous albums. The tracks were compiled by Vaughan’s brother, Jimmie Vaughan, in an effort to release the title track. The Sky Is Crying illustrates many of Vaughan’s musical influences, including songs in the style of traditional Delta blues, Chicago blues, jump blues, jazz blues, and Jimi Hendrix. The album’s tone alternates primarily between uptempo pieces and gritty, slow blues. The album includes a Grammy-winning extended instrumental cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.”]

14. Santana featuring Rob Thomas – “Smooth”

[17th album by Santana. It went 15 times platinum in the US and won nine Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year as well as three Latin Grammy Awards including Record of the Year. Conceived by Clive Davis it was a big global hit, eventually selling more than 30 million copies. It is the most successful album by Santana, charting in ten countries, including in the United States, at number one. Supernatural debuted at number nineteen on the Billboard 200 on July 3, 1999 but topped (after 18 weeks) the chart on October 30, 1999 and stayed there for 12 non-consecutive weeks. It included the hit single “Smooth”, which featured Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas on vocals, and was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks.]

15. The Rolling Stones – “Far Away Eyes”
from: Some Girls / Rolling Stones / June 9, 1978
[14th British and 16th American studio album, peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, and became one of the band’s biggest-selling albums in the US, and has been certified as having six million copies sold as of 2000. Many reviewers called it a classic return to form, and their best album since 1972’s Exile on Main St. With the advent of punk rock, The Rolling Stones were targeted by some in the movement as cultural dinosaurs. Mick Jagger felt invigorated by the provocations and was determined to answer them lyrically. It helped, however, that almost all the punks had, openly or not, idolized the Stones in the 1960s and were heavily influenced by the band’s rebellious records from that era. At least as important was the addition of Ronnie Wood to the line-up, as Some Girls was the first album recorded with him as a full member.]

16. Michael Jackson – “Black or White”
from: Dangerous / Epic / November 26, 1991
[1st single from Jackson’s 8th studio album. Dangerous sold over 35 million albums worldwide, and has been cited as one of the best-selling albums of all time that produced 4 top ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. To prepare the audience for the TV premiere of the “Black or White” video, Epic records released the song (without the accompanying images) to radio stations just two days in advance. In a period of 24 hours, “Black or White”, described by the record company as “a rock ‘n’ roll dance song about racial harmony”, had been added to the playlists of 96 percent of 237 of the USA’s top 40 radio stations the first day of release. “Black or White” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35. A week later it shot up to number three and in its third week, December 7, 1991, it ascended to #1, making it the fastest chart topper since The Beatles’ “Get Back” also won the Hot 100 in just three weeks in 1969. It remained at the top of the singles chart into 1992 for a total of seven weeks, making Michael Jackson the first artist to have #1 popular hits in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In the UK, the single became the first single by an American to go into the singles chart at #1 since 1960, when “It’s Now or Never” by Elvis Presley did in the same manner. “Black or White” hit #1 in 19 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The single was certified platinum in the US, selling over one million copies and became the second best selling single of the year. Reviews of the song varied. Rolling Stone’s Allan Light in his Dangerous review, compares the song unfavorably to “Beat It”: “Neither this slow-burn solo nor the Stones-derived riff on ‘Black or White’ offers the catharsis of Eddie Van Halen’s blazing break on ‘Beat It'”.]

17. The Prodigy – “Firestarter”
from: The Fat of the Land / XL Recordings / July 1, 1997
[1st single from their 3rd album The Fat of the Land, and their 10th single. It featured Kieth Flint’s punky vocals which showcased him as the group’s frontman. Band members Liam Howlett & Keith Flint share songwriting credits with Kim Deal of The Breeders. The looped wah-wah guitar riff in “Firestarter” was sampled from The Breeders’ track “S.O.S.” from Last Splash. Because of the use of a sample from the 1984 single “Close (to the Edit)” songwriting credits also list Art of Noise’s then-members: Anne Dudley, Trevor Horn, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan & Paul Morley. The album title comes from the old English phrase ‘living off the fat of the land.’ The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide as of 2012. The album debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album has since gone double platinum, selling over 2 million copies.]

18. The Red Elvises – “Closet Disco Dancer”
from: Your Favorite Band – Live / Shoobah Doobah / May 1, 1999
[Russian-American band that performs rock & roll, surf, rockabilly, reggae, lounge and traditional Russian styles of music. They were founded in California in the mid-1990s and are based in Venice Beach.]

19. Ugly Kid Joe – “Everything About You”
from: As Ugly As They Wanna Be / Island Def Jam Records / August 31, 1992
[American rock band from Isla Vista, California, formed in 1990. The band’s name spoofs that of another band, Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joe’s sound includes a range of styles, including rock, hard rock, funk metal and heavy metal. To date, Ugly Kid Joe have released three full-length albums, two compilation albums and two EPs. Their best selling records are As Ugly as They Wanna Be and America’s Least Wanted, were both certified double platinum by the RIAA. The band broke up in 1997, but announced a reunion in 2010.]

20. No Doubt – “Different People”
from: Tragic Kingdom / Interscope / October 10, 1995
[3rd studio album from Anaheim, California, band that formed in 1986. Between 1995 and 1998, seven singles were released from it, including “Just a Girl” and “Don’t Speak”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 . The album has sold over 16 million copies worldwide; and was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States and Canada, platinum in the United Kingdom, and triple platinum in Australia. It helped to initiate the ska revival of the 1990s, persuading record labels to sign more ska bands and helping them to attract more mainstream attention. No Doubt embarked on a tour to promote the album. The tourlasted two and a half years.]

21. Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Higher Ground”

[“Higher Ground” was written by Stevie Wonder for his 1973 album Innervisions. The Red Hot Chili Peppers released a cover as the second single from their fourth studio album Mother’s Milk.]
