Nan Turner is one half of the critically acclaimed band Schwervon! Nan has been called the “Lucy Ricardo of Indie Rock.” She also performs as Nan & The One Night Stands. Her new EP is called For Champs and Losers, Version 2 and was Recorded, Mixed, and Co-Produced at Winky World in Kansas City, by Chase Horseman.

Nan wrote on facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. HA HA Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative…stuff was moving around, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. Me and my guitar got reacquainted. We were “dancing in the dark.” I’ve never quoted Bruce Springsteen before,. but also I didn’t know I was going to record this EP, so you know. I’m rolling with shit. I had the luxury of working with Chase Horseman every week or two…giving myself ample time to add/rework stuff. I took the slow road and enjoyed the process. Chase has great ears and is uber-talented in his own right and he’s releasing an EP called Disinformation Blues on July 12, as well. He and Ian Dobyns (Dreamgirl, Chase The Horseman) were my rhythm section on a few of these tracks and brought the songs to life in the way they needed but I didn’t know they needed (just MORE one nite stands I’m adding to the crew ha ha)!”

Jade Osborne has performed nationally and internationally as a solo artist and with Voler – Thieves of Flight Performance Ensemble. She is a Non-Profit Arts Facilitator; International Performance Artist & Workshop Leader; Capoeira Beribazu Professora; AcroYoga Montreal & AcroFitness Instructor; Voler Aerial Acrobatics Instructor; Shamanic Yoga Instructor; and NEA & U.S. Dept. of Ed Grant Recipient.

John Mark Aladeen Studied at Stratford Career Institute for relaxation therapies, the School of Metaphysics in Springfield, Missouri, and The International Center for Reiki Training in Southfield, Michigan. He is a multi-instrumentals who has played with the critically acclaimed Dub Sutra. He has also performs at Kansas City Renaissance Festival.

Jade recently preformed in a special outdoor event INTER RELATION >SHIP at Washington Square Park with Calvin Arsenia and John Baker as part of her “Fifty Shows of Jade.”

Jade was the person that introduced Calvin to WMM listeners on the radio on July 20, 2011 when she brought Calvin with her as one of the composers for her Voler Theives of Flight show for KC Fringe that was produced in the Kansas City Ballet Todd Bolender Dance Space.

There was an altar constructed during INTER RELATION >SHIP with Calvin Arsenia and John Baker a few weeks ago. Jade is recreating and extending the voices and memories into the next performance, The SHIFT SHOW.

Jade writes: “Rituals breathe life into my story. Constructing an altar…The deliberate placement of meaningful items is meditative and brings my mind peace and purpose.”

“Premonition Scenes” is a great duo collaboration of two of Kansas City’s finest musicians.. Chris Hudson(Gullywasher) and Chad Brothers(Old Sound, Shapiro Brothers, Super Massive Blackholes) came together in the spring 2018 and started recording Chris’s EMO Americana original solo songs when they decided to combine forces and put some excellent guitar work around Chris’s lyrics, music and vocals, the trade off guitar work between them is unbelievable interwoven stuff, capturing a one of kind performance, All recorded live in Chad’s home studio.

The Moose is an alternative band from Lee’s Summit, Missouri: a suburb of Kansas City.

Originally formed by Jake Hilger, Alex Huffman, and Tyler Frey in the summer of 2016, they were later completed with the additions of Emma Klein in August 2016.

The Moose began as a psychedelic, neo-rock band in the summer of 2016.

Tyler, humored the idea after a choir show at their high school just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. Their plan went into full effect after the addition of Emma Klein (percussion and vocals). The group built their headquarters in Klein’s basement, hiding the cement walls with posters of their influencers: The Beatles, Tame Impala, and Electric Light Orchestra; and textile sheets separating their studio from their main base.

After many rumors of The Moose becoming an official band, the members spontaneously decided to have a Halloween Bash— costumes required— and unwarrantedly advertised so with posters all over their high school. Completely filling the backyard of Tozier’s house, fans all dressed up and singing classic rock covers with their new favorite band.

Because of the positive feedback from the Halloween bash, The Moose released their first single in February 2017, “New Kind Of Love,” which brought the band 15,000 listens and multiple bar shows with their name as the headliner.

The Moose’s success heightened after their performance at Battle of the Bands in Kansas City— winning first place and a cash prize. And once Frey— the oldest in the group— graduated from high school, summer kicked off, the band started taking their careers more officially.

In August of that year, The Moose released their first self-titled EP overflowing with classic psychedelic rock, and alternative sounds. The band did not receive as much support they originally began with but still sustained their local fan base, enabling them to continue bar shows and other small events.

After Middle of the Map Fest, and a concert at the recordBar in Kansas City, senior year was winding down for the rest of the band members. Parker Tozier who had joined the with Emma Klein in 2016, decided to pursue his aspirations at an out-of-state college, dropping the band from five to four.

The Moose released their debut album “The First Real Encounter” in December of 2018 on the winter solstice of 2018. They now prepare for a tour of the Midwest in the springtim

With backgrounds in choir, jazz band, and years of playing, each member implements their own unique touch to each track. The Moose’s “sound” includes ingredients of a funky alternative- pop/synth-rock genre, with heavy influences from neo-psychedelic bands k.

The Moose won 2017 Shuttlerock: Teen Battle of the Bands at The Nelson-Atkins Museum. Winning the Battle of the Bands later gained them a spot on the Middle of the Map Festival Lineup, where artists such as Lewis Delmar, Jason Isbell, and De La Soul headlined.

2. Destroyer – “Tinseltown Swimming in Blood”
from: Ken / Merge Records / October 20, 2017
[11th studio album from Destroyer from Vancouver, British Columbia fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar and formed in 1995. Destroyer songs are characterized by abstract, poetic lyrics and idiosyncratic vocals. The band’s discography draws on a variety of musical influences, resulting in albums that can sound markedly distinct from one another; in Bejar’s words, “That’s kind of my goal: to start from scratch every time.” Daniel Bejar was born October 4, 1972. Bejar has gained widespread popularity through his musical collaborations with Vancouver indie-rock band The New Pornographers, but has released far more material as the frontman of his band Destroyer. He is renowned for his poetic and often cryptic lyrics as well as his unorthodox vocals. Bejar’s father was a Spanish physicist and his mother was a Spanish teacher. The troubled “Freedom Palace” LP was recorded over 10 years ago in the summer of 2007 by Paul Malinowski and Brodie Rush in Kansas City, Missouri. Anodyne Records had commissioned Be/Non to re-record songs from, “RAN” and “Esperanto At The Pantheon, Incognito” along with other unreleased material. The music from the title track “Freedom Palace” was written by John Huff and had the album been released, would have been the first Be/Non composition not penned by Brodie Rush. Be/Non was a 5 piece before recording negotiations began in 2007. Directly before preproduction, the band had lost its drummer of 3 years and Be/Non was actively searching for a replacement. Between Brodie filling in on drums for two songs and Billy Brimblecom playing drums on another track, Be/Non asked Adam Phillips of The Architects to drum on the album’s remaining songs. The album was mostly recorded at Westend Studios in Kansas City and at Brodie’s home studio The Gold Room. After tracking 97% of the album, the project was taken to Studio G in Brooklyn New York for mixing by Joel Hamilton. 10 days later, the album was mixed and ready for duplication. No formal album covers had been decided on. John Huff had an idea of a Unipegadong by a nebula in space, while Brodie was thinking a castle floating in mid air. The first cover idea was mostly just pointing arrows going in all directions. Emotionally that was probably the closest to the mindset of that recording. The album “Freedom Palace” was never pressed or released. Because a contractual arrangement could not be agreed upon between Anodyne Records and Be/Non, the band would not see an album released until 2009, “A Mountain Of Yeses”, 11 years after it’s last release in 1998. “Freedom Palace” is dismissed by the band as a complete failure. Ultimately not having rights to the recordings, the inability to reach a contractual agreement with Anodyne Records and unhappiness with the final mix led to the disbanding of the “Freedom Palace” line up in early 2008. Reclusive, secluded and freshly divorced, a depressed Brodie Rush stopped all live performances for the next two years. Spending time to construct the concept record “A Mountain Of Yeses” as a solo endeavor under the Be/Non band moniker. Then, six years later in 2014, John Hulston of Anodyne Records graciously gave Brodie Rush full rights to the “Freedom Palace” recordings and masters. Be/Non has since tried numerous times to re-record the material for a proper release, but never could fully accomplish this task. Finally, for the entire world, for better or for worse, Be/Non and Haymaker Records would like to present the final mix of “Freedom Palace” the way it was originally intended. Be/Non adamantly renounces the production, mix and performances on these recordings, with few exceptions. The album was mixed and recorded during a dizzying haze of drug and alcohol abuse. The lyrics, the tone and the feel of the record is very unfocused, angry and misguided. This record does not reflect the proper sonic soundscape or performances Brodie Rush and Be/Non had intended whatsoever. “Freedom Palace” was full of rehashed versions of songs better left to their previous incarnations. “Moi Ou Toi” from the 7″ is a remake from “Freedom Palace” but the “FP” version is a remake of the original “Ran” version. Complicated. In fact ALL of the recordings on “FP” are remakes from “Ran” and “Esperanto.” “Do the Heat” and “Lucy” are again remakes of the “Ran” and “Esperanto” versions. The version of “Ice Fight” on “FP” I think… is different than the B-Side to “Moi Ou Toi”. A different remix with other instruments. We had two different versions from 2015. The Kraftwerk reference was unintentional. John Huff started playing that back in 2006 but hadn’t heard the Kraftwerk song until I played it for him in 2015. He just did that and thought he was cool. I hadn’t heard that tune until 2010 or so. It was an accident. There is an unreleased, unfinished song called “No God Of Mine” I recorded in 2002 on my 8 track that when I tried to remake it in 2007 with Mike Cochran on drums, John heard it and played me a song from the band YWKMBT Trail Of Dead from 2005 that was almost identical even the timing on the changes. The vocal melody was different tho. I got so disturbed by it that I stop working on the song altogether. “Garlic”, “In The Nighttime” “More Than Enough” and “Current And The Rind” were all part of an unreleased collection called “Enhance The Smoky” from 2000. Same year “Tenderfoot” was written.]

Harry and Emily met Orono during one of their old band’s Japan shows (she attended as a fan), and they struck up a Facebook friendship with their future bandmate. 9. David Byrne – “Everybody’s Coming To My House”

[Co written with Brian Eno. David Byrne’s first solo studio album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Even though since then he has released albums with Brian Eno, Fat Boy Slim, and St. Vincent. The album is his 11th outside of his work with talking Heads. The new album is one part of a larger multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful which aims to give reasons for being happy and optimistic in spite of political strife and environmental problems. The project was entitled after the Ian Dury song “Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3)”. David Byrne writes: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking. This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses. Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on. [Sufjan Stevens (SOOF-yan) was born July 1, 1975, and is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His debut album A Sun Came was released in 2000 on the Asthmatic Kitty label which he cofounded with his stepfather. He is perhaps best known for his 2005 album Illinois, which hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the single “Chicago” from that album. Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there until the age of nine, when his family moved to Petoskey, in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. He was raised by his father Rasjid and his stepmother Pat, only occasionally visiting his mother, Carrie, in Oregon after she married her second husband Lowell Brams. (Brams later became the head of Stevens’ record label Asthmatic Kitty).He attended the Detroit Waldorf School, Petoskey High School and Interlochen Arts Academy, and graduated from Harbor Light Christian School. He then attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and earned a Masters of Fine Arts from The New School in New York City. Sufjan is a Persian name meaning “comes with a sword”. It predates Islam and most famously belonged to Abu Sufyan, a figure from early Islamic history. The name was given to Stevens by the founder of Subud, an inter-faith spiritual community to which his parents belonged when he was born. A multi-instrumentalist, Stevens is known for his use of the banjo, but also plays guitar, piano, drums, xylophone, and several other instruments, often playing all of these on his albums through the use of multitrack recording. While in school, he studied the oboe and English horn, which he also plays on his albums. Stevens did not learn to play the guitar until his time at Hope College. Stevens lives in Kensington, Brooklyn, in New York City, where he makes up the Brooklyn staff of Asthmatic Kitty Records.]

Ryan Wilks is a Kansas City based artist who’s work has explored gender issues, queer erotica, femininity and sexuality. His new exhibit, Here Where You Wish, is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, 2018. Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way being crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish. Tim J Harte is composing ritual based sounds/music for the event. The 40 square feet altar is being constructed by Sean Prudden and Ryan Wilks, to house the objects that people bring to the piece.

From Ryan’s press materials: Kansas City-based visual artist Ryan Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the KCPL Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry way that encourages the public to consciously and methodically enter. The elaborate and flowing entrance is meticulously crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish.

From Ryan’s press materials: Altars are typically resurrected to pay homage to a historical event or to worship deities. This altar is intended to serve as a nondenominational safe-space for personal expression and reflection. Created for everyone, by everyone. People from all walks of life are encouraged to write down a wish and leave it on the altar. A wish, a non-religious prayer, opens us up to a child-like connection to the invisible and allows us to gently believe even if just for a second that what we most desire can and will come true if we are bold enough to speak its name.

2017 was a hard year for all of us. No matter what side of the protest lines we stand, we do so because we are uneasy, angry, afraid, and unwilling to compromise what we think is right. There is a need to create a safe and sacred space for all of us to feel hope in. To believe in the power of the individual and of a wish.

The altar will be up for 3 months and will grow substantially in its aesthetic as people leave behind a wish on paper and/or an object. Wilks will be rolling up the paper wishes and tying them to hundreds of feather sculptures rotating above the altar, stirring the energy of the wishes. Here Where You Wish will provide a space for internal dialogue and reflection. As the installation is in a heavily-trafficked public library, attending participants will contribute to the interactive aspects of the installation. Additionally, Wilks has plans to utilize and honor the objects others leave in the space by publishing a book, which will be a literary and visual documentation of what Kansas City is wishing for in 2018.

Risks and challenges

Every project comes with its own unique risks and challenges:

Foreseeably people will want to know where their objects that they have left at the altar will end up. We are open to suggestions! Obviously since Here Where You Wish is in a public space, leaving behind your grandmothers broach is not encouraged if your heart is intent on getting it back once the installation is complete. People may feel connected to certain objects and take them with them. This is not necessarily the goal here, but it may happen, and the Library nor anyone involved in the project can be held responsible for missing objects. Items left should hold some emotional weight with the individual but not to the degree that letting it go with a wish would cause regret.

The objects at the end of the project will be repurposed respectfully, and possibly a part of a more permanent installation in a public space.

There is also the vulnerability of writing down a wish, and people may not want their wish shared in a book; there will be verbiage at the installation that lets people know these are anonymous wishes and to not add information that you would not feel comfortable being published, such as a name. There is something beautiful though, in letting such a vulnerable thing as a wish, be shared with the world, because for every wish there are thousands of people wishing the same wish.

There will be verbiage explaining that objects such as weapons, alcohol, drugs, and food are not welcomed to be placed upon the altar.
Ryan Wilks will be coming in twice weekly to ensure that these requests are fulfilled as will library staff.

Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her no. 1 single, “Lovin’ You”. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis, but did not disclose she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society’s Courage Award which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of cancer on July 12, 1979 at age 31.]

Lesley spent two years teaching English as a Peace Corp Volunteer in Uzbekistan, worked on small water conservation in Hubli, India, observed presidential elections in Guinea, and obtained two Masters Degrees from the University of North Carolina and the Fletcher School (Tufts). Lesley currently works as a Senior Sector Analyst at Water.org based here in Kansas City.

At 11:15, Mark talks with artist Ryan Wilks about his new exhibit, Here Where You Wish, an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, 2018. Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way being crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish. Salty – The band was formed from a retooling of Lil Toughies. Lil Toughies was a built from Jonathan’s need to have a band to exorcise the weird ideas that were building up in his head after the collapse of All Blood. All Blood is the moniker of Jonathan Brokaw’s solo project that was at one time a collaborative effort with Zach Turner, Zach Campbell and Justin Baird. Jonathan recently made available All Blood songs in a new release on Bandcamp.

The annual Out Here Now: Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, begins tomorrow June 22 and runs through June 29 at Tivoli Cinemas in Westport.

For the past eighteen years, Jamie Rich has served as the festival director for the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, the city’s oldest and best-attended community film program. He coordinates the marketing and special screenings at the Tivoli Cinema in Westport, including the popular Open Circle Spiritual Cinema Series. Through his consulting company, Rich Relations, he has assisted numerous individuals, community groups and businesses with all facets of event production, marketing and organizational development. He was one of the the founding organizers of The Westport Center for the Arts, and the Cornerstone Foundation at Unity Temple on the Plaza. Jamie served for five years as the Center Director for the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of Kansas City, and was also the founding president of the Heart of Westport Neighborhood Association.

Also with us is Austin Williams, a UMKC doctoral student seeking an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in American History and Educational Leadership, Policy, and Foundations. Austin is collaborating with UMKC’s Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid America (GLAMA) and the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, he is currently working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), and a documentary film, The Ordinance. His research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

Also with us, is one of the real life people, who’ll be featured in Austin’s new documentary. 25 years ago David Weeda was on the front lines of the struggle to pass The Human Rights Ordinance. David was influencial in motivating the LGBT community, allies, and helping to build a political base and political action effort for equality. David Weeda was the Director of Jon Barnett’s political campaign for City Council in 1991. He was co-founder and former director of The Human Rights Ordinance Project. David Weeda was named “Civil Libertarian of the Year” in 1994 by the Western Missouri/Eastern Kansas chapter of the ACLU. And The Missouri House of Representatives issues a resolution citing his work as an activist. since 2003 David Weeda has lived in Bucksport, Maine. Last year David was a National Delegate for Bernie Sanders at the DNC in Philadelphia. David is back in Kansas City for opening night of the KC LGBT Film Festival, and a special reception tomorrow night, Thursday, June 22 at 6:00 pm in the Tivoli Cinema lobby in support of The Ordinance Project, where you can meet Austin, David, Jamie, and others.

UMKC doctoral candidate, Austin Williams shared plans to produce and direct an upcoming documentary film, THE ORDINANCE, telling the story of KCMO Ordinance 65430, to prohibit discrimination based on HIV-status and sexual orientation in Kansas City.

Austin has spent the last year and a half studying Kansas City’s efforts to pass anti-discrimination legislation for members of the LGBT community. With the help of Stuart Hinds and the staff at The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA), Austin has pored through thousands of primary sources and digitized dozens of hours of VHS footage.

Austin has been blessed to meet many of the activists and politicians directly involved in Kansas City’s fight for civil rights. People have invited me into their homes and shared their stories over cups of coffee. THE ORDINANCE PROJECT is our collective effort to capture their memories on film.

Collaborating with UMKC’s Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid America (GLAMA) and the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, he is currently working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), and a documentary film, The Ordinance.

His research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

As Austin writes, “it was one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” Next year marks the 25th Anniversary of “sexual orientation” being added to Kansas City’s Civil Rights Ordinance. At the height of the AIDS crisis, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri debated whether or not to amend its Civil Rights Ordinance to prevent discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and people with HIV/AIDS.

It quickly became the most highly contested piece of legislation in KC’s history, galvanizing both supporters and opponents while exposing a social divide that is still felt today. This is a story that must be told, and the time to tell it is now.

David Weeda

David Weeda was on the front lines of the struggle to pass The Human Rights Ordinance. David motivating and organized the LGBT community, allies, and helped to build a political base and political action effort for equality, where there had not been one. (The following information was from David’s own biographical notes he shared with us.)

David Weeda graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School in 1977, graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education, Voice Concentration with a Choral Conducting Emphasis, from Emporia State University in 1981. David began working for the Endowment Association at Emporia State. He traveled all over Kansas establishing community scholarship funds.

David moved to Kansas City in 1983 and started Highland Bagpipe lessons. David also started at Johnson County Community College for a Hospitality Management AA. He immediately became affiliated with Kansas City Nuclear Freeze later renamed Peace Works, with Lynn and Chris Cheatum and others. David also volunteered with the Choice Coalition of Greater Kansas City, doing “counter-picketing” every Saturday morning at Planned Parenthood of Greater Kansas City.

In 1988 David went through Good Samaritan Project volunteer training. it was at this training where he met Jon Barnett. He and Jon also became involved in helping to start an ACT UP/KC group in Kansas City.

In 1989, Mike Bates, Director of KCMO Human Relations Department, invited Jon and david to provide testimony before the Finance Committee in support of an ordinance which would provide non-discrimination protection based on HIV-status. Following our testimony, Mike asked us about pursuing adding sexual orientation as a protected class to the same ordinance.

Human Rights Ordinance Project was born and initially operated as an affinity group of ACT UP/KC. Both Jon and David co-directed HROP and simultaneously took jobs with Lesbian & Gay News-Telegraph — and opened the Kansas City office of the News-Telegraph. David served as the executive director of Human Rights Project through the passage of 3 municipal ordinances, and ultimately the defeat of the Amendment Coalitions state-wide Constitutional initiative campaign.

He was co-founder and former director of The Human Rights Ordinance Project.

David was named “Civil Libertarian of the Year” in 1994 by the Western Missouri/Eastern Kansas chapter of the ACLU. The Missouri House of Representatives issued a resolution citing his work as an activist.

In April 1999, David turned 40, and what was supposed to be a year-long, cross-country journey changed, when David found love and ended up living in Provincetown from 1999 to 2003 working for the Center For Coastal Studies. In 2003 David moved to Maine to pursue developing his Bed & Breakfast.

Last Summer David was a National Delegate for Bernie Sanders at the DNC in Philadelphia. He playing his bagpipes for Bernie after he spoke at our group breakfast with the Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine delegations.

David wrote on facebook: “I am so proud and thrilled that historian/filmmaker Austin Williams is putting together a book and documentary project that will impart the important story of our work in Kansas City 25 years ago which resulted in municipal laws which prohibit discrimination based on HIV-status and sexual orientation.”

“We mobilized, energized and activated our community. We developed coalitions, educated the electorate, campaigned for equality, justice and truth. . . and changed our city and many lives. As the co-founder and former executive director of Kansas City’s Human Rights Project I was privileged to join hands, link arms and share tears, laughter and success with so many wonderful allies in this work! This is an important story from our past; and chronicling it through a documentary film will ensure its impact on future generations!”
