5. The Republic Tigers – “Falco Peregrinus”
from: Mind Over Matter / The Record Machine / June 5, 2020
[Hailing from Kansas City, MO, The Republic Tigers spike their lushly orchestrated indie rock with organic and synthetic elements. Founder Kenn Jankowski originally moved to Kansas City in 1999 and began playing guitar for The People, a band that later changed its name to The Golden Republic (Astralwerks Records). He also made fast friends with local musicians Ryan Pinkston and Adam McGill; and when The Golden Republic disbanded seven years later, he opted to launch his pop-based project with the other two multi-instrumentalists. Taking their name from Jankowski’s high school mascot, The Republic Tigers expanded their lineup with bassist Marc Pepperman and drummer Justin Tricomi. Electronic structures remained to play an important role in their music (via convenience/sensible creation-farming/forming), and the band issued a self-titled EP in late 2007 before putting the finishing touches on Keep Color, which arrived in 2008. Then there was a cool EP in 2011 titled “No Land’s Man” which featured the emo smash hit “The Infidel” and the extremely fun “Merrymake It With Me”. And then a second concept LP was concocted, “Mind Over Matter” – written from the year 2008 to the year 2011. Mixed and mastered in the year 2012. But then it was sadly shelved by the original labels until finally being released on hometown indie label The Record Machine in 2020.]

7. Thanya Iyer-“Please Don’t Hold Me Hostage for Who I Am, for Who I Was”
from: Kind / Topshelf Records / July 31, 2020
[KIND explores an expansive universe where Iyer and her band examine interpersonal relationships, ideas of home and destination, and our collective responsibilities to one another. To aid in this journey of big, difficult questions, Iyer enlists the help of a huge cast of musicians, with guest features ranging from brass trios, vocal sextets, flautists, and harpists. Underscoring its explorative nature, the constant movement of KIND melds the sounds of experimental pop and improv into a magical amalgam that teems with flashes of jazz and nuanced electronics. Iyer’s rhythm section pulsates with genre-defying palettes of blips and skitters that twist elegantly into the melodic voices of interlocking synth, strings, and piano, all led by Iyer’s enrapturing lilt. The rhythmic direction of bassist Alexander Kasirer-Smibert and percussionist Daniel Gélinas clears a navigable path in an otherwise unnavigable setting, built on the pair’s understated yet intriguing expertise. The most succinct distillation of the album’s themes is perhaps found in KIND’s tracklist. “Please Don’t Hold Me Hostage for Who I Am, Who I Was” and “Bring Back That Which is Kind to You” inspire philosophies of self-care and emergent reconfigurations of justice, calling on listeners to self-reflect and detach from our preconceptions of ourselves and our identity. At the end of its course, KIND arrives at the conclusion of acceptance and resolve: acceptance of our collective circumstance, and the resolve to make the choice to do better. Thanya Iyer on voice, synth, violin, piano; Alex Kasirer-Smibert on Bass, percussion, synth, voice; Daniel Gélinas on Drums, Drum machine, percussion, voice; Shaina Hayes on vocals (tracks 4,5; Simon Millerd on Trumpet; Mawmz Plus Choir [Shelby Cohen, Corey Gulkin, Emilie Kahn, Brigitte Naggar, Sarah Rossy, Tamara Sandor] (tracks 7,9); Emilie Kahn on Harp, Frédérique Roy on Accordion; Devin Brahja Waldman on Saxophone; Felix Del Tredici on Trombone; Anh Phung: on Flute; Scott Bevins on Trumpet + electronics. All songs by Thanya Iyer. Produced by Daniel Gélinas, Alexander Kasirer-Smibert & Thanya Iyer. Recorded and Mixed by Daniel Gélinas at Studio Chocolat Chaud (Ogden, QC), St George’s Anglican Church (Montréal, QC) and Resonance Café (Montréal, QC). Mastered by Elton Chueng at Classick Studios (Chicago, IL) ]

As a prodrug, psilocybin is quickly converted by the body to psilocin, which has mind-altering effects similar, in some aspects, to those of LSD, mescaline, and DMT. In general, the effects include euphoria, visual and mental hallucinations, changes in perception, a distorted sense of time, and spiritual experiences, and can also include possible adverse reactions such as nausea and panic attacks.]

9. Durand Jones & The Indications – “Young Americans”
from: Young Americans – Single / Dead Oceans / January 20, 2020
[One of two singles the band has released in 2020. Initially recorded for Howard Stern’s SiriusXFM radio show, the band have now decided to share the track with their fans. Featured on Bowie’s 1975 album of the same name, which saw him move away from the glam of earlier recordings towards a more soulful sound, Blake Rhein from The Indications said: “The entire Young Americans album is an incredible piece of soul music history with brilliant flares gospel, funk, and disco. The way Bowie is able to use these ingredients and apply them to his own brand of weird-o pop is just amazing.” The track was recorded in August of 2017 at Russian Recording in Bloomington, Indiana after the Stern show reached out as they were putting together a compilation featuring various artists covering different Bowie songs. Having seen no one was covering Young Americans, the decision to record the track was relatively straight forward as the soul-stylings of the original perfectly suited Durand Jones & The Indications. The band were joined during recordings by Alonza Lawrence, Saren Oseitoto and GeDeane Graham on backing vocals, Ana Nelson on saxophone and Jesse Klirsfeld on trumpet. The band who last year appeared at both the Meltdown Festival, curated by Nile Rodgers, at London’s South Bank and the Green Man Festival in August and more recently played their biggest sold-out London headline show at the Islington Assembly Hall, head out for an extensive run of U.S. dates starting in January. // Durand Jones & The Indications released their debut self titled album on May 16, 2018. The band released their second album, American Love Call, on March 7, 2019. Bayou-born soul sensation, Durand Jones got his start in the church, after being forced to sing in the choir of his rural hometown Hillaryville, Louisiana because his Grandmother thought he sang too much at home. When his music career took him to Bloomington, Indiana, he was selected to join the legendary Indiana University Soul Revue, and it was through his involvement that he met writer/producer duo Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein. The three began writing original soul music, recording themselves straight to tape in the basements of Bloomington – and their debut album is now available on Colemine Records. The Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. This young band of twenty-somethings are students of soul, including guitarist Blake Rhein, who moonlights doing research for The Numero Group.]

18. Kadesh Flow – “I’m A Hero”
from: Kansas City Syzygy / Kansas City Syzygy / July 17, 2020
[Kadesh Flow released his latest EOP Motivated on January 31, 2020. Mixed by Kadesh Flow. Mastered by Bill Beats. Kadesh calls this EP a “collection of tracks that I made to motivate myself. Hopefully they get you fired up as well.” Kadesh Flow is Ryan Davis is a rapper with an MBA. He is an emcee, producer, & trombonist. At age 11, he began rapping and playing trombone within two weeks of one another. His music has been featured on network television in multiple countries and territories across Southeast Asia. Kadesh performs as a solo hip hop artist. He also plays with KC funk juggernaut The Phantastics, and Marcus Lewis Big Band. // COVID-19 may have shut down innumerable business and altered our lives forever, but one thing it couldn’t stop is the creative drive and spirit in the world’s artists. Kansas City Syzygy is a glimpse into the music created in the middle of the map in the middle of a pandemic. Over 25 Kansas City-based musicians came together to create “Kansas City Syzygy,” a compilation of music created during the shutdown of the world in the Spring of 2020. “Syzygy” is a term most commonly used in astronomy and is defined as “connected or corresponding events.” Album designer JC Franco states “like planets or stars aligning, so did our lives.” The nineteen songs on the album span the entire spectrum of music. Calvin Arsenia’s “Painted Ladies” is a dreamscape sung form his voice and harp, while Seth Andrew Davis’ “No Place But Home” invokes scenes of an underground dance club. Some musicians are collaborating for the first time on this album, as demonstrated on “Abyss.” Songs like “The Virus” by KC hip-hop artist Kemet Coleman comments on the impact of the coronavirus, as well as the virus that is racial injustice in America that has received global attention during the past months. All proceeds will be donated to KC Tenants, a local nonprofit organized to ensure that everyone in KC has a safe, accessible, and truly affordable home.]

2. Lee Fields & The Expressions – “It Rains Love”
from: It Rains Love / Big Crown Records / April 5, 2019
[With a career spanning 43 years, releases on twelve different record labels, and having toured the world over with his raucous-yet- tender voice, itʼs mind-blowing that the music heʼs making today. Elmer Lee Fields was born in 1951 in Wilson, North Carolina, the son of Emma Jean Fields and John Fields. He was the second child of six children. Fields had an interest in music from an early age. He decided to go to New York, at the age of 17 to pursue a music career. Although his mother (whom he later named an album in honor of) tried to convince him not to go, she ended up giving him her last 20 dollars. With moves and style inspired by James Brown, Fields soon had the nickname “Little JB” because of his physical and vocal resemblance with James Brown. He has worked with Kool and the Gang, Hip Huggers, O.V. Wright, Darrell Banks, and Little Royal. Fields has also worked with such legends such as B.B. King, Clarence Carter, Dr. John, Tyrone Davis, Johnny Taylor, Denise LaSalle, Bobby Blue Bland, Betty Wright, The Manhattans, Little Milton and Bobby Womack. He recorded his first single in 1969 on the Bedford label, “Bewildered” b/w “Tell Her I Love Her.” He recorded “Gonna Make Love” on London Records in 1973. That same year, Fields released the popular 45, “Let’s Talk It Over” b/w “She’s a Love Maker”. Fields dropped “Everybody Gonna Give Their Thing Away to Somebody (Sometime)” b/w “East Coast Rapper,” on SoundPlus in 1975. Most of the second half of the 70’s Fields spent cutting singles for Angle 3 Records, including “The Bull Is Coming” b/w “Funky Screw”. In 1980 he released a full-length album with Angle 3 called Let’s Talk It Over. In the 1980s, disco became increasingly popular, at the expense of soul. Venues that had previously booked Fields now booked DJs. Fields moved into real estate in Newark, New Jersey, in order to provide for his family. In the 1990s, Fields returned singing soul-blues on the Southern circuit. He signed with Mississippi-based Ace Records and debuted Enough Is Enough. On Ace, Fields released Coming to Tear the Roof Down in 1995 and Dreaming Big Time in 1996 in which he played keyboards and synthesizers. Later that year Fields signed to Desco Records founded by Gabriel Roth and Phillip Lehman. Sharon Jones, who was signed to Desco also at that time, sang backup for Fields on an early 45. Fields was featured on the debut album Gimmie the Paw by the label’s band The Soul Providers in 1997. He released several singles with in Desco and in 1999, dropped a full-length album Let’s Get a Groove On. Desco later split into, Daptone Records and Soul Fire, and Fields eventually recorded for them both. “Give Me a Chance” and “Shot Down” were two 7″ singles he released on Daptone over 2001-2002 and in late 2002, the album Problems, on Soul Fire. In early 2005 he performed on “Stranded In Your Love” included on Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings’ Naturally LP. In 2006 French House DJ Martin Solveig approached him to do a dance track. They toured in France and recorded the songs “Jealousy”, “Everybody”, “I’m a Good Man”, and “I Want You”. Truth and Soul Records recorded a single with Fields that later became “Honey Dove”. Lee Fields & The Expressions released “My World” for Truth and Soul in 2009. In 2011 he followed up with the album titled Treacherous. After releasing Faithful Man in 2012 with Truth and Soul, the singer toured globally. He then released two albums Emma Jean in 2014 and Special Night in 2017 (on Big Crown Records by former Truth and Soul co founder Leon Michels).]

3. Broken Heart Syndrome – “Dolly (and other unfinished business)”
from: Dolly (and other unfinished business) – Single / Broken Heart Syndrome / Sept, 13, 2019
[Kansas City bsed supergroup Broken Heart Syndrome, is Matthew Roth (of Schwervon!, Major Matt Mason USA) on songwriting, vocals & guitar, Pat Tomek (of The Rainmakers) on drums & percussion, Dave Tanner (of The Depth and The Whisper) on bass and backing vocals, Todd Granthem (of The Quivers) on keyboards. This recording was engineered and co-produced by Pat Tomek at Level Stage in KC, MO. Dolly (and other unfinished business) is the second official Broken Heart Syndrome release. Matthew Roth writes, “This track was inspired by the autobiography of Dolly Parton. Many years ago, while I was still living in New York, I took part in a very ambitious singer-songwriter night that is put on by my friend Susan Hwang, called the Bushwick Book Club. It’s still going on, as far as I know. Basically, you read a book and then you write a song about it. The book was Dolly Parton’s: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. I was having a hard time tracking down a copy of the book and luckily my friend Diane Cluck just so happened to have it on tape. It was an actual cassette tape. So, yeah turns out Dolly Parton had a pretty amazing life. It was great to hear her voice telling her own story. There were several points where I felt very moved and even connected to her story. I tried to take some of those parts and channel them as inspiration for the lyrics. It’s like a little secret message from me to her. I don’t think most people would be able to tell what the song is about if I didn’t tell them. I’m pretty positive that she’ll probably never hear it but it’s a really fun way to write a song.”]

19. Pala Zolo – “Up Northern”
rom Up Northern – Single / The Record Machine / February 8, 2019
[Pala Zolo is the instrumental electronic project of Lawrence, KS musician Eric Davis. In Pala Zolo, Davis blends synthesizers and drum machines with live instruments to create his blend of cinematic pop music. He chose the name to pay homage to his Sicilian heritage by naming the project after a small Sicilian village he spent time in while studying abroad in Italy. Pala Zolo allows Davis the full freedom to experiment in ways that are a departure from his main gig as the keyboard player in buzzy up-and-coming rock band Hembree (Thirty Tigers, Oread Records). // The inspiration for Pala Zolo came from a chance meeting with fellow electronic musician, Tycho’s Scott Hansen. One day while working at The Granada Theater in Lawrence, Davis was given the job of being Hansen’s driver. For years Davis had been writing and recording his own demos and was completely unsure of what to do with them. After spending the entire day with Hansen and seeing him perform, Davis realized he could bring his incomplete ideas to life in his own unique way. Seeing an instrumental band perform such an emotionally charged set inspired Davis to finish his songs without traditional vocals and to begin creating his own sound in that genre. // Soon after, Davis set forth to finalize the recordings with his good friend and producer Joel Martin (Y god Y). The two of them spent countless hours experimenting with synthetic and acoustic textures to create perfect soundscapes to compliment Davis’ intricately arranged compositions. In 2018, Davis self-released singles House Plant & 40K, and continued to take Pala Zolo to another level by performing live with drummer Gerardo Rojas. The duo brings the songs to life with live synths, guitars and drums and has been resonating with audiences. // In the summer of 2019, Pala Zolo is releasing their debut EP on Kansas City label The Record Machine and looks to take Pala Zolo to new heights.]

13. Calvin Arsenia – “Back To You (Paul Brown Mix)”
from: L.A. Sessions / Center Cut Records / September 20, 2019
[1st single from L.A. Sessions released August 16. Produced by Tony Braunagel (he also delivers exquisite percussion on LA Sessions) with Paul Brown on guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Freddie Washington on bass, and David Garfield on piano. Between them, the five musicians have worked with some of music’s most iconic names, including Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Loeb, Rickie Lee Jones, Buddy Guy, The Neville Brothers From Center Cut Record Press Release: “It was a thrill for me to work with such legendary players,” says Calvin. “Not only were they incredibly talented, but I got off a plane straight from Australia, hit the studio, and they were more than ready to get to that place where you honor the songs, leaving their egos at the door and honoring what the muses tell them. It was one of the best recording experiences I ever had.” Calvin’s production M.O. on previous recordings was to piece together songs “like pieces of a puzzle” and “layer them over several sessions.” He believes the immediacy of the LA Sessions, and having the instrumentation all happening in the “same emotional space together as a band,” powerfully served the intimacy of the album, particularly on the reflective “Back To You.” “It’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, and it always plays that way in my live set, and the guys were able to help me capture that,” he says. “The song is a very heartfelt admission of guilt, I think. But it’s done in a way people usually don’t want to talk about. Breakup songs are usually angry and lashing out and this is a very sober-minded take on it. It’s not something we usually want to admit, surrendering or admitting defeat in a relationship, because everyone thinks you’re always going to make it through, and this is saying ‘no we didn’t…but it’s OK.’” Born in Orlando, Florida, his creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows (regularly sold-out in Kansas City, currently catching fire on the West Coast with a diverse following across Europe), are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe (Center Cut Records), has been acclaimed for melding diverse textures into an alluring signature sound for the adventurous artist. Most recently, Calvin performed live at L.A.’s The Mint, showcasing the songs on LA Sessions with the musicians who collaborated with him on the album. Says Calvin: “It’s such a special experience to play with them. To be able to perform these songs in front of an audience and do this for a living – to have made a career out of something I love is so amazing – it is an honor that I never take for granted.” On September 15, 2018 Calvin released Cantaloupe on Center Cut Records. Calvin released Honeydew on June 28, an EP including a remix of three of the songs from Cantaloupe.]

11:04 – Interview with Calvin Arsenia

Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released his EPs, Moments, Prose, Catastrophe, Caviar, Honeydew, and his beautiful full length self produced, Catastrophe. After signing with Center Cut Records he released his critically acclaimed album Cantaloupe in September 2018, with a giant show at The Gem Theatre.

Calvin Arsenia at recordBar, Thursday, September 19, 2019.

Now Calvin is set to put out his newest Center Cut Records release LA Sessions, with a LA Sessions Album Release Show at recordBar, 1520 Grand, on Thursday, September 19, at 7:00 PM.

Calvin Arsenia, thanks for being with us on WMM.

We just heard the 1st single from L.A. Sessions released August 16. Produced by Tony Braunagel (he also delivers exquisite percussion on LA Sessions) with Paul Brown on guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Freddie Washington on bass, and David Garfield on piano. Between them, the five musicians have worked with some of music’s most iconic names, including Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Loeb, Rickie Lee Jones, Buddy Guy, The Neville Brothers.

From Center Cut Record Press Release: “It was a thrill for me to work with such legendary players,” says Calvin. “Not only were they incredibly talented, but I got off a plane straight from Australia, hit the studio, and they were more than ready to get to that place where you honor the songs, leaving their egos at the door and honoring what the muses tell them. It was one of the best recording experiences I ever had.” Calvin’s production M.O. on previous recordings was to piece together songs “like pieces of a puzzle” and “layer them over several sessions.”

He believes the immediacy of the LA Sessions, and having the instrumentation all happening in the “same emotional space together as a band,” powerfully served the intimacy of the album, particularly on the reflective “Back To You.” “It’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, and it always plays that way in my live set, and the guys were able to help me capture that,” he says. “The song is a very heartfelt admission of guilt, I think. But it’s done in a way people usually don’t want to talk about. Breakup songs are usually angry and lashing out and this is a very sober-minded take on it. It’s not something we usually want to admit, surrendering or admitting defeat in a relationship, because everyone thinks you’re always going to make it through, and this is saying ‘no we didn’t…but it’s OK.’”

LA Sessions is a collection of subtly reimagined songs featuring musicians who have worked with some of music’s most iconic names including Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, and Buddy Guy.

Guitarist Paul Brown worked with Aretha Franklin, keyboard player Mike Finnigan sessioned with Etta James, bassist Freddie Washington sat in with B.B. King and Elton John, and pianist David Garfield recorded with Smokey Robinson and Cher. The producer for LA Sessions was Tony Braunagel, who put together the band.

Calvin Arsenia, Rigby Summer, and Ed Dupas on the September 18, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI.

11:32 – Interview with Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas

Singer songwriters Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas travel all over the country to play their original songs and sometimes they get to play on the same bill. Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas play Carl Butler’s Gospel Lounge at Knuckleheads Saloon, 2715 Rochester St, TONIGHT, Wednesday, September 18, at 7:30, swapping songs to close out the night after Carl’s band kicks off the night. Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas join us today to play live in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Ed Dupas

Ed Dupas’ soulful music has been compared to Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen. Born in Houston, Texas and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dupas is a self-described searcher and thinker, whose religious upbringing managed only to push him away from mainstream ideas, rather than box him in.

Rigby Summer

Oklahoma-based songwriter Rigby Summer weaves an Americana soundscape that reflects the road she’s traveled, from her Kansas City jazz upbringing to the beach pop of her former home in southern California to the red dirt roots of her current home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her sound has been compared to Ingrid Michaelson and Peggy Lee.

Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas thanks for being with us on WMM

ED DUPAS – WELL WORN WIDE AWAKE MUSIC

Americana singer-songwriter Ed Dupas’ lived-in melodies unwind with reflective lyrics and speak to the current state of the human condition, soothing where possible, agitating where necessary, and seeking change where appropriate. Ed Dupas creates and shares well-worn wide-awake music.

THE LONESOME SIDE OF TOWN – Ed Dupas’ 3rd studio album features 11 new songs! When all is said and done, The Lonesome Side Of Town is a collection of songs that bear witness to a time of tremendous personal change in my life. Its songs testify to both the steadfastness of love, as well as its departure. Hopefully, the record serves to communicate the lessons, the struggle, and the beauty to be found in all of it.

The Lonesome Side of Town was conceived in a small church in Greenville, Michigan. Having been constructed in the 1880’s, the building found new life as a recording studio when it was purchased by my friend and fellow musician, Chris Ranney. In August of 2018, Chris and I spent a day tracking drums in the church with producer Michael Crittenden and drummer Rob Avsharian. Rob’s playing was solid and artful as ever, and he proved himself a good sport when our creative wanderings gave way to bossa nova beats and vinyl LPs on drum heads. As night fell, a line of storms approached the town, and we had no choice but to call the session. It was enough, we’d gotten the drum tracks we needed in a single day. We also captured the character of the church, who’s color permeates and shapes the entire record.

Ed Dupas 2nd album was released in spring of 2017, Tennessee Night, is the result of three days tracking with producer Michael Crittenden at Mackinaw Harvest Studios in Grand Rapids, MI. The heart of the record was recorded live in July of 2016 in the midst of a summer heatwave. The album features Rob Avsharian on drums, James Simonson on bass, Drew Howard on Steel/electric guitar, Chris Ranney on Piano, and Michael Crittenden doing a little of everything. Also featured on the album are singer-songwriter Judy Banker (Heading Home Again), Tara Cleveland (Some Things), and Cole Hansen (Everything Is In Bloom, Promised Land, and Tennessee Night.)

Ed Dupas first album: A GOOD AMERICAN LIFE was named as one of the best country albums of 2015 by The Telegraph-UK, this debut record was independently released late May, 2015. A Good American Life was recorded/produced in Grand Rapids, MI by Michael Crittenden.

“Sonically, the album consistently retains a dusky hue, reminiscent of Nebraska-era Springsteen or early Red House Painters. Ed’s music is essentially acoustic at its core; the recordings include some accompaniment complete with flourishes of overdriven, midwestern guitar shapes and pedal steel over top spare and sure drumming, while the occasional harmonica embellishes the quintessentially American folk sense of these tunes. Ed’s baritone vocals retain an easy, warm, and melodic tone, his lyrics refreshingly well articulated with just a touch of sardonic wit beneath the heartfelt and at times aching delivery.” -National Country Review

11:45 – Interview with Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas

Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas on the September 18, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI.

We are talking with Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas who play Carl Butler’s Gospel Lounge at Knuckleheads Saloon, 2715 Rochester St, TONIGHT, Wednesday, September 18, at 7:30, swapping songs to close out the show after Carl’s band kicks off the night.

Rigby Summer and Ed Dupas thanks for being with us on WMM.

Rigby Summer is an emerging, Oklahoma-based songwriter. She weaves an Americana soundscape that reflects the road she’s traveled, from her Kansas City jazz upbringing to the beach pop of her former home in southern California to the red dirt roots of her current home in Stillwater. Those cross-country moves and life-changes put music on the back burner in recent years, but she’s now come into her own, giving these songs new life.

While her influences range from Mary Chapin Carpenter to The Frames, Sia Furler to Johnny Cash, her sound often draws comparisons to Ingrid Michaelson and Peggy Lee–a little modern, a little old-fashioned, always earnest.

In 2017, after a five-year hiatus from performing music, she founded the monday@modella songwriter pop-up, and started sharpening her musical teeth, slowly carving a niche for herself in the Oklahoma scene. Recent honors include Honorable Mention in the 2017 Woody Guthrie Festival Songwriting Contest and invitations to join Norman Music Festival 2018, Bob Childers’ Gypsy Café 2018 and Women of Woodyfest 2018.

Meanwhile, Nadia credits the songs themselves for her return to the stage. “When I see the audience’s reaction to a lyric I’ve been given, I realize this isn’t about me. It’s about the songs and the power of words to connect us. I decided I had an obligation to bring these songs into the world.”

18. Joan Shelley – “The Fading”
from: Like The River Loves The Sea / No Quarter Records / August 30, 2019
[Joan Shelley was born in 1985,. She is a songwriter and singer from Louisville, KY. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she’s not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained—simply, succinctly, in a song—“I Witness Life.” Since the 2015 release of her fourth album Over and Even, Shelley has crossed the country and toured Europe several times as a headlining artist, joined by guitarist Nathan Salsburg and sharing shows with the likes of Jake Xerxes Fussell, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Doug Paisley, Daniel Martin Moore, the Other Years, and Michael Hurley. She has opened for Wilco, Chris Smither, Andrew Bird, and Richard Thompson. Jeff Tweedy produced her 2017 record “Joan Shelley” at The Loft in Chicago. She’ll be familiar to readers of guitar-centric magazines for having appeared, in the same season, on the covers of Fretboard Journal and Acoustic Guitar. Her latest album, “Like the River Loves the Sea,” was released to wide acclaim in Uncut magazine, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Mojo, and Q magazine. Her second album, Ginko, and third album Farthest Field (with Daniel Martin Moore) were released in 2012 on Ol Kentuck. In 2014, Shelley released her fourth album, Electric Ursa, on No Quarter Records. In 2015, Shelley released her fifth album, Over and Even, on No Quarter. In 2017, Shelley released her eponymous sixth album. Her seventh album, Like the River Loves the Sea, was released in 2019. ]

Nicole sings from the heart, writing every song to be a reflective piece of her life story and as a means to evolve and grow as a human. She describes her sound as pop-folk but additional influences such as gospel, soul, and Motown find their way into the mix. 11:35 – Interview with Stephonne Singleton

We have the pleasure of welcoming back to Wednesday MidDay Medley singer, songwriter and actor, Stephonne Singleton who joins us to premiere his new single “Want Me.” Last year Stephonne released his debut album, “Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard.” The album was one of WMM’s 118 Best Recordings of 2018. Natalie Gallagher wrote in The Pitch, “If you’re looking for a good soul-stirring, acquaint yourself with Stephonne. The KC-born artist evokes the sultry sashay of Prince — one of his primary inspirations — and the omniscient wisdom of great jazz singers from bygone eras. He recombines the best elements of soul, R&B and funk, informing the resulting sound with some kind of magical instinct for the irresistible.”

Stephonne Singleton, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Stephonne calls himself the lovechild of Prince and Billie Holiday, grew up in KCK and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Bendictine College and Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University.

More info at: http://www.stephonne.com

Stephonne Singleton’s new release was co-produced by, Justin Mantooth, and recorded at Westend Recording Studios. The track features Johnny Hamil on bass, Ben Byard on guitar and Adam McKee on drums.

Stephonne Singleton was born and raised in Wyandotte County, Kansas. He is 32 years old and has performed in multiple shows for Late Night Theatre. He also performs as Kita Rose.

He told John Long of Camp Magazine that, “Late Night Theatre is my favorite place in the whole wide world,” he says, “and the support and opportunity Ron [Megee], Jessica [Dressler] and Chadwick [Brooks] give me has fed me so much as an artist and has nurtured me to be able to fully express myself on a stage.”

Stephonne told John Long of Camp Magazine “I was surrounded by records, and my parents always had music on.” His mother would, “turn on Luther Vandross, or Anita Baker, or all of these artists. We had Barbra Streisand records, Beatles records, the Isley Brothers. I remember watching Lady Sings the Blues [a film about jazz singer Billie Holliday] and I was, like, 7. I lived in a super musical world.”

He expects to move more toward releasing singles rather than entire albums.

They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. 7. Akkilles – “Leave Your Love”
from: Something You’d Say / Akkilles / July 2, 2013

Akkilles includes David Bennett on lead vocals, guitar; Isaac Anderson, on drums; Rachel Pollock on violin, piano, percussion, and vocals; Nick Pick on Bass and vocals; and Jeff Larison on lead guitar and dobro. The band played The Middle of the Map Fest and the Crossroads Block Party.

In April, David Bennett told David Hudnall of The Pitch:

“When I play by myself, I do a lot of loops and effects and play with microphones that accentuate vocals,” Bennett says. “With the band, it’s a little more like straightforward experimental pop. I’m drawn toward what I guess you’d call ambiguous writing, and I like jacking the sound of pop music a little, both musically and lyrically.”

“I’ve spent a lot of time the past few years trying to really learn how to write and record,” Bennett says. “Now it’s getting to the point where I’m recording a lot more and getting a lot of material down. I think there’ll be another Akkilles EP in the fall and maybe another album sometime in 2014. I like doing crummy demos by myself, but it’s also cool to go into a studio with a real band.”

David Bennett has been recording homemade demos as Akkilles. You can learn more about his recordings at SoundCloud, or Bandcamp, where his “Demo Treasure” EP is also available.
