He is best known for starring as Titus Andromedon on the Netflix comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015–2019), for which he has received four consecutive Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nominations. He has also performed in several regional theater productions, including The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar. He reprised the role in Season 6. “45” is the first track off Burgess’ first album in seven years, Saint Tituss. Described by the artist as his “deepest and most soul-searching” work to date. He told them.us “… given the political climate, I think it’s time to speak out. I fear for our country. I fear for how our country treats its citizens and I fear for how our citizens treat each other. It’s a larger problem than just legislation. I didn’t know how to respond, so I just started with art.”]

2. Nan Turner – “Double Heartbreak”
from: For Champs and Losers, Version 2 / Nan Turner / July 12, 2019
[All songs by Nan Turner. Recorded, Mixed, and Co-Produced at Winky World in Kansas City, by Chase Horseman. Mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music, New Windsor, NY. Ian Dobyns plays drums and Chase Horseman plays bass. Nan Turner is one half of the critically acclaimed band Schwervon! Nan has been called the “Lucy Ricardo of Indie Rock.” She also performs as Nan & The One Night Stands. Nan wrote on Facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. HA HA Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative…stuff was moving around, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. Me and my guitar got reacquainted. We were “dancing in the dark.” I’ve never quoted Bruce Springsteen before,. but also I didn’t know I was going to record this EP, so you know. I’m rolling with shit. I had the luxury of working with Chase Horseman every week or two…giving myself ample time to add/rework stuff. I took the slow road and enjoyed the process. Chase has great ears and is uber talented in his own right. He & Ian Dobyns (Dreamgirl, Chase The Horseman) were my rhythm section on a few of these tracks.” More Info at: http://www.nanturner.bandcamp.com]

3. John Moreland – “Lies I Chose To Believe”
from: Big Bad Luv / 4AD / May 5, 2017
[Tulsa, Oklahoma based singer-songwriter John Moreland was born June 22, 1985 in Longview, Texas. The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he played with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” John grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.” His “High on Tulsa Heat” was in our 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

7. The War and Treaty – “Healing Tide”
from: Healing Tide / Strong World Entertainment / August 10, 2018
[Full Length album debut from Michael Trotter Jr & Tanya Blount-Trotter are from Albion, Michigan. For Michael Trotter Jr., the journey began in 2004, when he arrived in Iraq, an untested soldier stricken by fear and self-doubt. His captain made it his personal mission to see to Trotter’s survival. The unit was encamped in one of Saddam Hussein’s private palaces, and in a forgotten corner in its basement, they found a black upright piano that once belonged to the dictator himself. When Trotter shared the fact he could sing, he was encouraged to teach himself to play piano on that confiscated keyboard. “I wrote my first song after that captain was killed,” Trotter recalls. “I sang it for his memorial in Iraq.” Soon after it became his mission to sing at the memorial services for those that had fallen. For the next three years, he sang songs that brought solace and comfort to the members of his unit. His efforts eventually garnered wider recognition as well. He came in first place in “Military Idol,” the army’s version of “American Idol,” during a competition held in Baumholder, Germany. Following his discharge, he was featured on the Hope Channel program “My Story, My Song.” Then he met Tanya Blount. Blount’s musically influences include Mahalia Jackson, Sister Odette and Aretha Franklin. The two fell in love, got married and used the experiences they had gained to create a new musical collaboration. The couple then secured the services of musicians whose skills add a distinctive sound to The War and Treaty’s blend of roots music, blue grass, folk, gospel and soul. The band’s 2017 EP Down to the River was released July 21, 2017. Recorded in Albion, Michigan, Down to the River boasts a sound that’s both stirring and sensual, driven by joy, determination and an unceasing upward gaze. The music is visceral but never morose, flush with emotion but void of despair… a style that touches on a variety of genres, but never finds itself confined to anyone. The arrangements are uncluttered– harmonies, basslines, guitar and mandolin licks, settle drum patterns and keyboards create an immensely moving soundscape — but the sentiments and emotions are fully realized and soar with a steady, chilling assurance. “The recording process wasn’t like anything I ever experienced,” Tanya recalls. “This EP has allowed me to breathe musically. I feel like all I have wanted to express for the past ten years has come forth with what we’ve done. The combination of heart, soul and the overwhelming amount of love that Michael and I have for one another comes across in this record.“ “I was sitting on the banks of the Euphrates River in Baghdad dreaming about one day being able to play and sing professionally for people all around the world,” Michael reflects. “As we recorded our music, I constantly had flashbacks of those desert dreams. I thought to myself that this is actually the perfect ending to usher in a new beginning in my life.” ] [First Played February 7, 2018]

[Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit & Brandi Carlile with special guest The War and Treaty play the Providence Amphitheater, 633 N 130th St, Bonner Springs, KS. this Friday, August 2.]

The Black Archives recently celebrated 45 years!

The Black Archives of Mid America, Horace M. Peterson III Building, 1722 E. 17th Terrace, Kansas City, MO. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturdays 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. http://www.blackarchives.org

The mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City, Inc. is to collect, preserve and make available to the public materials documenting the social, economic, political and cultural histories of persons of African American descent in the central United States, with particular emphasis in the Kansas City, Missouri region. Black Archives of Mid-America is an educational resource and provides access to its collections for research, exhibition and publication to honor our community heritage and to catalyze public awareness.

History & Founder of the Black Archives

The Black Archives of Mid America, Inc. was founded May 8th, 1974 by Horace M. Peterson III and initially located at 1821 Paseo in the old Paseo Y.M.C.A. building. In 1976, the Black Archives moved to 2033 Vine, old Firehouse No.11. The firehouse, located in Kansas City’s Historic 18th and Vine District, itself is representative of African American history in this region as it was home to the first Black fire company in Kansas City. It was built in 1931 as part of the Work’s Progress Administration period under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Black Archives is a non-profit organization that serves the community by offering itself as an educational resource as well as a repository of every facet in African American culture; music, art , theater, education, military, medicine, sports, religion and community affairs. The Black Archives was expressly created to collect and preserve the history of African Americans in the Midwest. Beyond our original emphasis of research and critical examination, the Archives’ traveling exhibits personify the roles of African Americans and their plight to dispel negative images. Our interpretive and educational programs, research services and special projects have received overwhelming community support.

It was Peterson’s dream to see an invigorated 18th & Vine District that showcased the contributions of African Americans. His efforts became reality with the anticipated move of the Black Archives to a larger facility located in the heart of this Historic District. Other projects envisioned by Peterson include the KC Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Gem Theater; all landmarks in the 18th & Vine District.

(Mark Manning Full Disclosure: “For 20 years I have served as the coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, a program completely grant funded that serves 1500 students in 4 elementary schools and 3 middle schools in the KCK school district. Included in the exhibit are many many photographs from our KCK Organic Teaching Gardens Doris and William have asked permission to include. With the Teaching Gardens program we conduct over 400 workshops each school year in 24 different classrooms. We are attempting to continue the teaching and legacy of George Washington Carver in our curriculum and workshops.”)

William and Doris discovered our program and our connections to Carver. I was thrilled to see how much of our program is featured in their wonderful and educational exhibit, which will be on display at the George Washington Carver National Monument. This exhibit will also be on display at the Black Archives of Mid America, in August of 2019.

George Washington Carver (1860s – January 5, 1943), was an agricultural scientist & inventor. He promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion.

While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful.

Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. In an era of very high racial polarization, his fame reached beyond the black community. He was widely praised in the white community for his achievements & talents. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed Carver a “[b]lack Leonardo”.

In 1896, Booker T. Washington, the first principal and president of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), invited Carver to head its Agriculture Department. Carver taught there for 47 years, developing the department into a strong research center and working with two additional college presidents during his tenure. He taught methods of crop rotation, introduced several alternative cash crops for farmers that would also improve the soil of areas heavily cultivated in cotton, initiated research into crop products, and taught generations of black students farming techniques for self-sufficiency.

Carver designed a mobile classroom to take education out to farmers. He called it a “Jesup wagon” after the New York financier and philanthropist Morris Ketchum Jesup, who provided funding to support the program.

To recruit Carver to Tuskegee, Washington gave him an above average salary and two rooms for his personal use, although both concessions were resented by some other faculty. Because he had earned a master’s in a scientific field from a “white” institution, some faculty perceived him as arrogant. Unmarried faculty members normally had to share rooms, with two to a room, in the spartan early days of the institute.

From 1915 to 1923, Carver concentrated on researching and experimenting with new uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybeans, pecans, and other crops, as well as having his assistants research and compile existing uses. This work, and especially his speaking to a national conference of the Peanut Growers Association in 1920 and in testimony before Congress in 1921 to support passage of a tariff on imported peanuts, brought him wide publicity and increasing renown. In these years, he became one of the most well-known African Americans of his time.

The Cherry has completely reinvented himself and spent the last 2 years returning to his jazz roots on this upcoming LP, “Flavour”. Paul Cherry crafts melodies on Flavour that sit at the intersection of 1970s yacht rock and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi dream pop. Lyrically, Paul touches on millennial culture with references to texting and social media, giving a modern light-hearted twist to age old old themes of love lost, missed connections and polar political climates.]

We were accomplices to get ourselves to this point so we will have to be accomplices in the solutions.” This was their follow up released to their critically acclaimed I Am Another You, released May 26, 2017. From: http://www.mkngmvs.com

ameri’kana, the highly anticipated album from Making Movies and Rubén Blades, is out today. It’s an album that is as striking musically as it is narratively. It’s the power of collaboration across generations/languages/borders- it’s a call to action.

The album is a collaboration with none other than Rubén Blades. The collaboration began at the 2017 Latin Grammys, when Blades said he wanted to work with Making Movies, setting into motion their first collaboration, No Te Calles, a calling to all artists and the general public to speak out against corruption. Inspired by the poetry of Blades on “No Te Calles” Making Movies entered the studio and dreamed up ameri’kana, an “oldies” station from the future, where the injustices sung about are long gone. The album features artists that align with speaking out against divisions, corruption, and injustices, with the hope that in the future those ills will be a memory. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos signed on to produce the album, his third time working with the group, along with co-producer Ben Yonas and together helmed the sessions that brought the featured cast of ameri’kana: Flor De Toloache, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Asdru Sierrra of Ozomatli, Frankie Negrón, and Las Cafeteras. Blades offered himself as a guide and resource to the band during the process, and appears on three tracks of the record, including one co-penned by Lou Reed.

“For the first time in our journey we have aimed at a focused message to stand up against the political corruption and injustices that are plaguing our beautiful continent, Abya Yala.” said Enrique Chi, guitarist & frontman of Making Movies. “We are all accomplices in it and we must be accomplices in the solution which begins with raising our voices.”

The album’s genre-breaking sound pulls from Latin music as well as rock’n’roll, which Making Movies attests are one and the same: without the influence of Latin music in North America, jazz and blues would have never been born, nor would its successor rock’n’roll. ameri’kana marks the band’s sound and mantra: “ROCK’N’ROLL IS LATIN MUSIC,” they are as inseparable as the continent itself.

Making Movies is currently celebrating the release on a tour across the U.S. and Panama. Rubén Blades and Making Movies will share the stage for the first time at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City on November 20th.

Upon the release of this album I Am Another You, (May 26, 2017). Making Movies kicked off a 22-date Immigrants Are Beautiful Tour, a celebration of solidarity in the face of fear-mongering and hate. Frontman Enrique Chi shared, “It’s time to realize we are all part of this continuum, this beautifully flawed human race that has migrated from every continent to bring us all the beauty we enjoy today.” The band’s social statement is straightforward enough that they can express it in four words: “We Are All Immigrants.” In supporting that cause, a portion of all proceeds from the album and tour go to the National Immigration Law Center. Enrique Chi, describes, “since making the album, the tides have shifted and the underbelly of systematic racism has reared its ugly head. It is no longer time to be silent is time for us to raise our voices.”

Chase the Horseman’s new EP is called Disinformation Blues.

Nan Turner’s new EP is called For Champs and Losers, Version 2. Chase Horseman helped produce and record and played on Nan’s new EP.

Nan Turner

Chase has great ears and is uber-talented in his own right and he’s releasing an EP called Disinformation Blues on July 12, as well. He and Ian Dobyns (Dreamgirl, Chase The Horseman) were my rhythm section on a few of these tracks and brought the songs to life in the way they needed but I didn’t know they needed (just MORE one nite stands I’m adding to the crew ha ha)!”

Chase has been out of town premiering new music he created for film.

Frida the dog help in the production.

The Moose

11:06 – Interview with The Moose and Nathan Reusch of TRM

Nathan Reusch is founder of The Record Machine, a homegrown record label started in 2003. Originally created to promote music from Kansas City & Lawrence, TRM has grown to turnout records from bands all across the country. Nathan is also co-founder & curator of the Middle of The Map Fest.

Jake Hilger, Alex Huffman, Emma Klein and Tyler Frey, are members of the band The Moose an alternative band from Lee’s Summit, formed in 2016.

The Moose and Nathan Reusch are to share details about What’s Next KC, Sat, July 13, at 6:00 PM at Legacy Park Amphitheater, 901 NE Bluestem Dr, Lees Summit, MO. This is an all ages, family friendly event featuring: NublvckCity, The Moose, and Blue False Indigo. There will be concessions available and a BBQ Food Truck. Sponsored by Mid-Continent Public Library and The Record Machine.

The Moose is an alternative band from Lee’s Summit, Missouri: a suburb of Kansas City.

Originally formed by Jake Hilger, Alex Huffman, and Tyler Frey in the summer of 2016, they were later completed with the additions of Emma Klein in August 2016.

The Moose began as a psychedelic, neo-rock band in the summer of 2016.

Jake Hilger, Alex Huffman, Emma Klein and Tyler Frey on the July 10, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Tyler, humored the idea after a choir show at their high school just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. Their plan went into full effect after the addition of Emma Klein (percussion and vocals). The group built their headquarters in Klein’s basement, hiding the cement walls with posters of their influencers: The Beatles, Tame Impala, and Electric Light Orchestra; and textile sheets separating their studio from their main base.

After many rumors of The Moose becoming an official band, the members spontaneously decided to have a Halloween Bash— costumes required— and unwarrantedly advertised so with posters all over their high school. Completely filling the backyard of Tozier’s house, fans all dressed up and singing classic rock covers with their new favorite band.

Because of the positive feedback from the Halloween bash, The Moose released their first single in February 2017, “New Kind Of Love,” which brought the band 15,000 listens and multiple bar shows with their name as the headliner.

The Moose’s success heightened after their performance at Battle of the Bands in Kansas City— winning first place and a cash prize. And once Frey— the oldest in the group— graduated from high school, summer kicked off, the band started taking their careers more officially.

In August of that year, The Moose released their first self-titled EP overflowing with classic psychedelic rock, and alternative sounds. The band did not receive as much support they originally began with but still sustained their local fan base, enabling them to continue bar shows and other small events.

After Middle of the Map Fest, and a concert at the recordBar in Kansas City, senior year was winding down for the rest of the band members. Parker Tozier who had joined the with Emma Klein in 2016, decided to pursue his aspirations at an out-of-state college, dropping the band from five to four.

The Moose released their debut album “The First Real Encounter” in December of 2018 on the winter solstice of 2018. They now prepare for a tour of the Midwest in the springtim

http://www.musicofthemoose.com

With backgrounds in choir, jazz band, and years of playing, each member implements their own unique touch to each track. The Moose’s “sound” includes ingredients of a funky alternative- pop/synth-rock genre, with heavy influences from neo-psychedelic bands k.

The Moose has played numerous shows and locations, such as: the recordBar, Llywelyn’s Pub, The Roxy, Aftershock, 825 Studios, and The Nelson-Atkins Museum,

The Moose won 2017 Shuttlerock: Teen Battle of the Bands at The Nelson-Atkins Museum. Winning the Battle of the Bands later gained them a spot on the Middle of the Map Festival Lineup, where artists such as Lewis Delmar, Jason Isbell, and De La Soul headlined.

11:30 – Interview with Joel Bonner & Daniel Glascock of Serene Fiend

Joel Bonner and his Serene Fiend live bandmate Daniel Glascock join us to share the radio broadcast debut of Serene Fiend’s flagship single, “Unto Myself” from the upcoming Serene Fiend album “Elegies and Effigies.” Serene Fiend is an industrial rock artist from Lawrence, KS that blends pop and glam sensibility with nuances of the various movements within the industrial subgenre. All of Serene Fiend’s music is composed, produced, and recorded by Joel Bonner. When Serene Fiend plays live Sam Piper & Daniel Glascock are part of the band. Sam Piper & Daniel Glascock play in the band Hyper Mortal.

Joel Bonner & Daniel Glascock thanks for being on WMM.

I Heart Local Music writes: “In the ever-evolving attempt to bring electronic music back into Lawrence’s scene, another musician has switched gears– this time leaning towards a more industrial sound.”

I Heart Local Music continues “It comes from an unlikely source. Serene Fiend is the latest project from Joel Bonner, the man who’s been bringing animated live shows and rockabilly licks to Lawrence over the past year with his band The Boot Stompers. It’s unsurprising that his buzzing and provocative guitar style carries over to this project, though he’s piled it on with a lot more synths and electronic beats.”

Joel Bonner and his Serene Fiend live bandmate Daniel Glascock join us to share the radio broadcast debut of Serene Fiend’s flagship single, “Unto Myself” from the upcoming Serene Fiend album “Elegies and Effigies.”

Joel Bonner, & Daniel Glascock of Serene Fiend thanks for being on WMM.

Unto Myself lyrics:

I’m not afraid to die, I’m just afraid of loss
My strength means nothing if I’m not tough enough
I am an effigy – new possibility
I must be decimated to be built back up

And I will die unto myself
And I will try to heal myself
All for you

Sacrosanct as our romance, I will keep what I am
But the bee hive swarming in my head will be calm instead
I’ll come as you want me, I’ll be everything
The heart wants what it wants and I want to make me better
(to make us better)

And I will die unto myself
And I will try to heal myself
And I will live all for you
I will die unto myself
All for you

And when it all comes crashing down
I just want to lose myself in you

And I will die unto myself
And I will try to heal myself
And I will live all for you
I will die unto myself
All for you

The heart wants what it wants and I want to make me better

Earlier this year Joel Bonner released “Environ” by Serene Fiend, released May 14, 2019 – an ambient project written and recorded in one day across three three-hour blocks of time, hence the track titles.

3. Bill Callahan – “747”
from: Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest / Drag City Records / June 14, 2019
[21st release as Bill Callahan or Smog. Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has also recorded and performed under the band name Smog. Callahan began working in the lo-fi genre of underground rock, with home-made tape-albums recorded on four track tape recorders. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City, to which he remains signed today. Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, using substandard instruments and recording equipment. His early songs often nearly lacked melodic structure and were clumsily played on poorly tuned guitars, resulting in the dissonant sounds on his self-released cassettes and debut album Sewn to the Sky. Much of his early output was instrumental, a stark contrast to the lyrical focus of his later work. Apparently, he used lo-fi techniques not primarily because of an aesthetic preference but because he didn’t have any other possibility to make music. Once he signed a contract with Drag City, he started to use recording studios and a greater variety of instruments for his records. From 1993 to 2000, Callahan’s recordings grew more and more “professional” sounding, with more instruments, and a higher sound quality. In this period he recorded two albums with the influential producer Jim O’Rourke and Tortoise’s John McEntire, and collaborated with Neil Hagerty. Callahan also worked closely with his then-girlfriend Cynthia Dall in his early career, and they contributed vocals to each other’s albums. After 2000’s Dongs of Sevotion, Callahan began moving back to a slightly simpler instrumentation and recording style, while retaining the more consistent songwriting style he had developed over the years. This shift is apparent in albums such as Rain on Lens, Supper, and A River Ain’t Too Much to Love. Smog’s songs are often based on simple, repetitive structures, consisting of a simple chord progression repeated for the duration of the entire song. His singing is characterized by his baritone voice. Melodically and lyrically he tends to eschew the verse-chorus approach favoured by many contemporary songwriters, preferring instead a more free-form approach relying less on melodic and lyrical repetition. Themes in Callahan’s lyrics include relationships, animals, relocation, nature, and more recently, politics. On the subject of voice in his albums, Callahan has said, “It’s usually one character per record. So, the character appears in all or most of the songs on one record and then is gone. Though it makes me feel weird to talk about. Because I don’t really think in clear terms of characters. My albums as a whole could be seen as one character with many voices.”[4] His generally dispassionate delivery of lyrics and dark irony often obfuscate complex emotional and lyrical twists and turns. Critics have generally characterized his music as depressing and intensely introverted, with one critic describing it as “a peep-show view into an insular world of alienation.” Cat Power (Chan Marshall) recorded Callahan’s song “Bathysphere” on her 1996 album What Would the Community Think and also covered another Callahan song, “Red Apples”, on her Covers Record, released in 2000. In 2007, Callahan released Woke on a Whaleheart, his first solo album released under his own name, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle followed in April, 2009. Both recordings were released through Drag City, worldwide. In 2009, Callahan contributed cover songs on four separate tribute albums to Judee Sill, Kath Bloom, Chris Knox, and Merge Records. In 2010, he released his first live album Rough Travel for a Rare Thing, which was recorded in 2007 at The Toff in Melbourne, Australia. Apocalypse, was released in April 2011 to favorable reviews. Critic Sasha Frere-Jones called it “my favorite of Callahan’s albums, not because it has better songs—those are scattered among at least five others — but because it does exactly what he wants it to do: it conveys an album’s coherence.” A tour film chronicling Callahan’s 2011 Apocalypse tour was released in 2012.]

[Bill Callahan plays the Lawrence Public Library Lawn, Friday, July 5, at 7:00 PM at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St, Lawrence, KS with special guest Heidi Lynne Gluck.]

4. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear – “Mother Mary”
from: Radio Winners – EP / Glassnote Records / July 27. 2018
[Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim,. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of KCMO. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occassional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performace of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut album, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

Jaclyn & Josh Bell live in Overland Park, Kansas. Jaclyn grew up in the Kansas City area. Josh is originally from Highlands, Texas.

Jaclyn Bell married Josh Bell on February 15, 2013

Jaclyn released her first full-length album, “Wanna Be Mine” recorded here in Kansas City, Missouri at Dwelling Place Music with John Hendrickson.

Jaclyn started singing as a child in church and at 4-H competitions.

Jaclyn Bell played The Rino, 314 Armour Rd, North Kansas City, MO, last week on Friday, June 28 with The Dear Misses, Radiant Bones [NE], Thames [STL].

In an interview with Johnson County Library Jaclyn explained the she has “been working on (her new album, Wanna Be Mine) for about three years and I recorded here in Kansas City with some great local musicians and producers. The songs I would say I’m most proud of on the album are “Wanna Be Mine”, “Killing All of You”, and “Young and Free”. “Wanna Be Mine” because it’s one of my most melodic songs. It’s really raw honesty when you put yourself out there in front of someone and tell them what you want.”

She also talked about how she has “been a songwriter since I was about 17. But the past five years I’ve been really writing loads of songs and making it a career, [studying how] Taylor Swift [and] Ed Sheeran write and compose [their] music. Some of her earliest musical influences were Taylor Swift, Colbie Caillat, and Paramore.”

“For my songwriting process it’s a bit different. It’s like I catch a writing bug I could go months without writing songs and then once I feel inspired, I could write seven songs in three days. With editing, each song is different. Some songs I write once and don’t change anything about it. Others […] take four or five different editing sessions to get it perfect. Each song is a different art piece so doing it all the same doesn’t really make sense to me. I think that each one deserves its own unique attention and style.”

“2019 is the year that I put out my first album Wanna Be Mine and is officially the kickoff of my music journey and my career in making this what I do. I have a really good team and we have a bunch of stuff planned this year with a few media releases, a few singles that are already in the works, and obviously I’m still writing for my next album because the goal is to keep this going. We have some plans for getting my music out there for people to hear so I’m really excited!”

After leaving Lincoln to pursue her true passion of singing and songwriting, she finds that her techy side impacts how she writes music. “As a kid, I was always picking things apart and figuring out how to put them back together,” she said. “As an artist, I do the same thing – I pick apart my favorite singers to discover what made them great so I can walk in their footsteps.” With Kansas City becoming a place of movement for arts and entertainment, Mae C says now is the time to reinvent the wheel, break barriers, build bridges, but most of all support each other. “Supporting each other is the secret to rising to the top and putting the town on the map”, says Mae C. She aspires to inspire other artists to capitalize in their craft by not putting themselves in a box. “I’m an African American woman, but I refuse to allow anyone to use that against me. I’m an artist & proud black girl and I deserve a chance at every opportunity just as anyone else,” she said..] [Mae C. played The Riot Room, 4048 Broadway, KCMO, Saturday, February 23, at 8:00 PM. with Trxz Jones, They Call Me Sauce, JaySol Music, Guest DJ: DJ G3wizz, and Special Guest: Jo Blaq.

3. Mavis Staples – “Change”
from: We Get By / Anti / May 10, 2019
[14th studio solo album from rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. The album’s cover features the photograph “Outside Looking In” by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden. The album was produced and written by Ben Harper. Staples & Harper had previously collaborated on “Love and Trust”, a song from Staples’ 2016 album, Livin’ on a High Note. In a statement, Staples said, “These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.” Mavis Staples has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down.]

Volker Brothers Biography: The word “Volker” comes from the Germanic word “Fulc” meaning people. It is also the name of a neighborhood in KCwhere Erik Voeks & David George met. Volker Brothers are an acoustic duo that share lead vocals & background harmonies influenced by the likes of The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello to Crowded House, XTC, and The Beatles.

Voeks and George first started playing together when one would fill in with the other’s band. Whether it was Erik playing bass and singing backup in David George & A Crooked Mile or David playing guitar and singing backup in Erik Voeks & The Vague Lakes, the two realized they had a musicality in common. Stripping the band back to just the two of them on acoustic guitars enabled them to do a weeks worth of shows in Seattle. They began performing intimate shows around Kansas City, including house concerts and private events, and spreading the word on their melody driven, harmony enriched, acoustic based music. It’s not pop and it’s not folk, but a blend of the two.

Erik Voeks recently released full length album So The Wind Won’t Blow It Away in 2017 on Hanky Panky Records, a label based in Bilbao, Spain. It is the highly anticipated follow up to his 1993 album, Sandbox (Rockville Records) “A pervasively melodic collection of power-pop – a lost masterpiece” (Fresh Air KCUR). This doesn’t mean Voeks wasn’t busy. He has been a very in demand bassist in the Midwest and tours in Europe.

David George also had a recent release — three EP’s over a twelve month period. Here I Go Again, Won’t Let Go, and Lesson Of Love, with each album adding to the previous (acoustic, band, horns). George gained national attention when the Kansas City Chiefs chose his song “Hey, Kansas City!” to be their touchdown anthem in 2015-16 season. He also toured with the legendary John Fogerty, performing sold out arenas and the “late night” circuit (David Letterman, Jay Leno).

Volker Brothers have just finished recording and are releasing their first studio recording, a 5 song EP entitled Wrecking Ball. It’ll be available online digitally & physical copies at shows on June 28, 2019. The album was recorded w/ Duane Trower at Weights & Measures Soundlabs featuring a full band accompanying Volker Brother’s signature sound.

7. Jessica Paige – “Night Train”
from: “Night Train” – Single / Jessica Paige / June 1, 2018
[29 year old Jessica Paige moved to Kansas City from Manhattan, Kansas, after caring for her ailing grandmother for several years. She told CJ Janovy of KCUR News. “After she passed away, I started doing music full time, recorded my album and started touring.” Jessica self-produced my first album “Sweet Nothings” with Nashville-based artists and producers. The album is a reflection of the life-cycle of a relationship; the exciting and insecure beginnings to the lamenting demise of something that was once beautiful. The single released from the album, “Beautiful Life,” is a soul-pop reflection of someone trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions of trying to rescue or walk away from a relationship, while still appreciating how beautiful it is to love, regardless of how things turnout. While working on “Sweet Nothings,” Jessica settled in to Kansas City to start working with a full band and laying the groundwork for her next album.]

8. Kelly Hunt – “Sunshine Long Overdue”
from: Even The Sparrow / Rare Bird Records / May 17, 2019
[The daughter of an opera singer and a saxophonist, Kelly Hunt was raised in Memphis, TN, and grew up performing other people’s works through piano lessons, singing in choirs, and performing theater. “It was a very creative, artistic household,” says Hunt. During her teenage years, influenced by musical inspirations as diverse as Norah Jones, Rachmaninov, and John Denver, she began writing her own songs on the piano as a creative outlet. After being introduced to the banjo in college while studying French and visual arts, Hunt began to develop her own improvised style of playing, combining old-time picking styles with the percussive origins of the instrument. “I’m self-taught, I just started letting the songs dictate what needed to be there,” she says. “I heard a rhythm in a song that I wanted to execute, so I figured out how to do it on the drum head while still being able to articulate certain notes in one motion.” After college, Hunt followed a rambling path that took her through careers in acting, graphic design, traditional French bread making, and medicine, all the while making music as a private endeavor. “I wanted to get serious about a responsible career choice, but music kept bubbling up. I was writing a lot and playing a lot and started to not be satisfied just playing to my walls of my room.” After moving to Kansas City and discovering her mysterious Depression-era tenor banjo, Hunt began recording Even The Sparrow in Kansas City alongside collaborator Stas’ Heaney and engineer Kelly Werts. “It took almost two years to record,” she says, “learning how to let the songs dictate the production.” Having finally come to light, the album displays Hunt’s penchant for masterful storytelling and intriguing arrangement, as researched and complex as they are memorable, punctuated by her articulate melodies and a well-enunciated and creative command of lyrical delivery infused with deft emotional communication. While reminiscent of modern traditionalists such as Gillian Welch–a number of her songs even borrow titles and phrasing from traditional American music (“Back to Dixie,” “Gloryland”)–Even The Sparrow reveals an ineffable quality that hovers beyond the constraints of genre, à la Anais Mitchell and Patty Griffin. In “The Men of Blue & Grey,” what begins as a Reconstruction-era ballad about the repurposing of Civil War glass plate negatives in a greenhouse roof soon becomes a meditation on the hope that growth and life may one day be able to emerge from the ruins of suffering and haunting of violence. “Across The Great Divide” turns an otherwise traditional accounting of spurned love into a philosophical epic of the ethics of forgiveness and freedom, evoking the ideas of Søren Kierkegaard and Walt Whitman.]

Dick Von Dyke

A few weeks ago, Dick Von Dyke performed at Des Moines Pride and when he got back to his hotel, his Jeep had been broken into. He admittedly left a lot in my car. But the perps stole *so much* of his stuff including drag accessories, his class ring, all his tips from the weekend, and his laptop. By stealing it he lost every mix he’d ever made for drag. And his ability to make new ones. Drag is his livelihood and to have all of those accessories and mixes stolen was a devastating blow to his career…but he keeps telling himself they must’ve needed it more than he did.

So to try and make the best of a bad situation, on June 28th he is having a benefit show entitled “Night of a Thousand Dicks.” These lovely entertainers who don’t typically perform as kings have volunteered to do so for one night in order to try and help him get back on my feet.

With one-night-only king performances by:

Heidi Banks

Belle & The Vertigo Waves played Middle of The Map Fest last year.

Belle & The Vertigo Waves played Boulevardia this year.

Belle told Michelle Bacon at The Bridge that, “Many of the tunes had been written around five years prior, when Loux was just 15 or 16 and had only played them as a solo artist — with occasional accompaniment from her dad, guitarist John Loux, and keyboardist Charlie Hibberd. In 2017, she hired the two musicians and a couple other friends to track “Aligned,” dubbing the project Belle and the Vertigo Waves, in the hopes that she’d eventually assemble a live band. “Recording was a surreal and emotional experience. Playing the songs with a band was like seeing them come to life,” she said. “I knew there was no way I could be a solo artist anymore, because I fell in love with the [full band] sound so much.”

from: Masada Book Three – The Book Beri’ah CD 7 Netzach – Gnostic Trio / TZADIK / 2018
[The Book Beri’ah—the final 92 compositions that complete the 25-year Masada legacy in a beautiful limited edition box set of 11 CDs! written by John Zorn).John Zorn was born September 2, 1953, and is an American composer, arranger, record producer, saxophonist, and multi-instrumentalist with hundreds of album credits as performer, composer, and producer across a variety of genres including jazz, rock, hardcore, classical, surf, metal, soundtrack, ambient, and improvised music. He incorporates diverse styles in his compositions, which he identifies as avant-garde or experimental. Zorn was described by Down Beat as “one of our most important composers”. Zorn established himself within the New York City downtown music movement in the mid-1970s, performing with musicians across the sonic spectrum and developing experimental methods of composing new music. After releasing albums on several independent US and European labels, Zorn signed with Elektra Nonesuch and received wide acclaim with the release of The Big Gundown, an album reworking the compositions of Ennio Morricone. He attracted further attention worldwide with the release of Spillane in 1987 and Naked City in 1990. After spending almost a decade travelling between Japan and the US, he made New York his permanent base and established his own record label, Tzadik, in the mid-1990s. Tzadik enabled Zorn to maintain independence from the mainstream music industry and ensured the continued availability of his growing catalog of recordings, allowing him to prolifically record and release new material, issuing several new albums each year, as well as promoting the work of many other musicians. Zorn has led the hardcore bands Naked City and Painkiller, the Jewish music-inspired jazz quartet Masada, composed 613 pieces as part of the three Masada songbooks that have been performed by an array of groups, composed concert music for classical ensembles and orchestras, and produced music for opera, sound installations, film and documentary. Zorn has undertaken many tours of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, often performing at festivals with many other musicians and ensembles that perform his diverse output.]

Mehldau studied music at The New School, and toured and recorded while still a student. He was a member of saxophonist Joshua Redman’s Quartet with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade in the mid-1990s, and has led his own trio since the early 1990s. His first long-term trio featured bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy; in 2005 Jeff Ballard replaced Rossy. These bands have released a dozen albums under the pianist’s name. Since the early 2000s Mehldau has experimented with other musical formats in addition to trio and solo piano. Largo, released in 2002, contains electronics and input from rock and classical musicians; later examples include touring and recording with guitarist Pat Metheny, writing and playing song cycles for classical singers Renée Fleming and Anne Sofie von Otter, composing orchestral pieces for 2009’s Highway Rider, and playing electronic keyboard instruments in a duo with drummer Mark Guiliana. Aspects of pop, rock, and classical music, including German Romanticism, have been absorbed into Mehldau’s writing and playing. Through his use of some traditional elements of jazz without being restricted by them, simultaneous playing of different melodies in separate hands, and incorporation of pop and rock pieces, Mehldau has influenced musicians in and beyond jazz in their approaches to writing, playing, and choice of repertoire. Rod Parks happened upon an estate sale while furnishing his Brookside house and started buying 50’s-60’s Mid-century modern stuff. People would come over and say it was cool, so he started trusting his eye and researching designers etc.

Rod started buying and selling furnishings. His garage and basement became full, so he started filling storage lockers, and then warehouse floors. Rod finished the coursework for the PhD in ’96. And then Rod resigned from teaching in 1998 and opened Retro Inferno in June of that year having accumulated a warehouse full of stuff.

7, Cymande– “Listen”
from: Renegades of Funk / Alaska Records / June 7, 2005
[Best of anthology from Cymande (See-man-day) was a British funk group that released several albums in the early 1970s and reunited in 2014 with a European tour and a new album released in 2015. The group was formed by Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson in 1971 in London, England, along with musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent. The name Cymande is derived from a calypso word for dove, symbolizing peace and love. The group developed a subtle and complex, deep funk style influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, American soul and UK rock of the time. By the mid-1970s the band members were going their separate ways, and the group disbanded in 1974. It was not until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Cymande’s original albums are still widely sought-after by DJs and funk aficionados. Perhaps the band’s best known recording is the soulful dance floor filler called “Bra”, which was later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul and used as a breakbeat record by Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash. Cymande was accidentally discovered by English producer John Schroeder in a Soho, London club where they were rehearsing. He was there to see a rock band but the gig had been cancelled, and he stumbled upon these West Indian musicians. He soon signed the band and recorded their initial single “The Message.” The single was released by Janus Records, a division of Chess Records. The track reached #20 on the US Billboard R&B chart. This set the stage for Cymande’s self-titled release in 1972. Cymande traveled to New York after the success of the first album, and began a tour of the US with Al Green. They also shared a few bills with the Latin funk ensemble Mandrill. They played a few important venues, including The Apollo, and played a gig on Soul Train. The band released three LPs for Janus. However, their final album, Promised Heights, was not released in the US, where Cymande had achieved their initial success. Promised Heights included “Brothers on the Slide”, “The Recluse” and “Promised Heights”. The tracks “Brothers on the Slide” and “Bra” also were staples of the rare groove scene that developed in London and New York nightclubs during the 1980s.]

8. The Jim Campilongo Trio – “Cock ‘n Bull Story (feat. Nels Cline)” [Live]

He studied guitar in San Francisco with Bunnie Gregoire, who taught him to embrace many genres of music, including the work of jazz guitarist George Van Eps and country singer John Denver. He used green stamps to buy his first guitar. During high school, he played with his friend and drummer Ken Owen, and when he was seventeen he began performing with local bands. One of Campilongo’s biggest influences at the time was blues guitarist Roy Buchanan. His recording career started in San Francisco in 1996 when he formed Jim Campilongo and the 10 Gallon Cats. 10:22 – Interview with Rod Parks

Rod Parks lives in the Bruce Goff “Nicol House”, commissioned by Jim and Betty Nicol in 1964. It’s his third house. His has moved each time within 10 blocks of each house, moving not for more space, but moving for the architecture of each place.

Bruce Alonzo Goff was born June 8, 1904 and died August 4, 1982. He was an American architect, distinguished by his organic, eclectic, and often flamboyant designs for houses and other buildings in Oklahoma and elsewhere.

A 1951 Life Magazine article stated that Goff was “one of the few US architects whom Frank Lloyd Wright considers creative…scorns houses that are ‘boxes with little holes.”

Bruce Goff’s father, Corliss, the youngest of seven children born to a builder in Cameron, Missouri, who learned to be a watch repairman at an early age, and moved to Wakeeney, Kansas, where he opened his own watch repair business. One day a young schoolteacher named *** came in to have own watch repaired. Romance blossomed quickly and the two were married in 1903 at the home of her parents in Ellis, Kansas. Soon after marriage, the couple moved to the farm town of Alton, Kansas, where their son, Bruce, was born.

Life was still very difficult for the Goffs in Alton, so they moved south to what would become Tulsa, Oklahoma, (but was then Indian Territory.) At the end of the first summer, they moved to Henrietta, where Bruce’s sister was born in 1906. Then they moved to Skiatook and Hominy, where he saw the Indians in ceremonial dress, and was very impressed with their patterns and color. He started school in Skiatook, where he was fascinated by a picture of the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, his first real exposure to architecture, other than frontier structures. Later, after moving to Hominy, he began drawing fanciful pictures of such buildings on wrapping paper.

Golf’s family decided in 1913 to relocate to Denver, Colorado, where the father expected that his fortunes would change for the better. First, Corliss went ahead of the mother and children who stayed with her relatives in Ellis, Kansas. He bought a watch shop and opened for business. Meanwhile Bruce, displaying the talent of an artistic prodigy, learned to paint from nature [b] At the end of the summer, 1913, Corliss sent for the family to rejoin him in Denver. The economy did not favor his efforts, and Bruce later remembered going to bed hungry many nights, because his father could not afford enough food for the family. After a year and a half of constant struggle, Corliss realized that his fortune was not going to change there.

Goff’s parents decided to move back to Tulsa in 1915. Corliss had given up on the watchmaking business and became a grocery equipment salesman. Bruce was largely self-educated and displayed a great talent for drawing. He enrolled in the 6th Grade at Lincoln Elementary School, where his first art teacher, a Miss Brown, strongly supported his individualistic artistic expression.[2], p. 18. [c] His father apprenticed him at age twelve to the Tulsa architectural firm of Rush, Endacott and Rush.[d] Goff’s employers were impressed with his talent; they soon gave him responsibility for designing houses and small commercial projects. One of his earliest designs that was actually built was a house at 1732 South Yorktown Avenue in Tulsa’s Yorktown Historical District; another was the 1920 McGregor House, at 1401 South Quaker Street in what is now known as the Cherry Street District. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.[2], p. 29-30. During this period, his work was heavily influenced through his correspondence with Wright and with Louis Sullivan, both of whom had encouraged him to practice architecture with Rush, Endacott and Rush instead of enrolling in Massachusetts Institute of Technology; they felt the formal education would stifle his creativity. Goff was made a firm partner in 1930.[3] He and his high-school art teacher Adah Robinson are co-credited with the design of Tulsa’s Boston Avenue Methodist Church, one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States. Goff designed the Tulsa Club, downtown Tulsa’s historic landmark, in 1927.

Chicago period – In 1934 Goff moved to Chicago and began teaching part-time at the Academy of Fine Arts. He designed several Chicago-area residences and went to work for the manufacturer of “Vitrolite”, an architectural sheet glass introduced during the 1930s.

Military experience – In March 1942, three months after the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor. Goff enlisted in the U.S. Navy, Naval Construction Branch (“Seabees”). Called to active duty in July 1942, he underwent basic training, at first in Rhode Island and then at Gulfport, Mississippi. After graduating in September, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer (CPO) and posted to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where he spent 18 months. His design assignments were strictly conventional (e.g., a club house, a mess hall, an officers’ club), limited by military regulations, availability of materials, cost, schedules, etc.)

In March 1944, CPO Goff was ordered to report to Camp Parks, a naval complex in Dublin, California east of Oakland, for rehabilitation and reassignment (R & R). A senior officer, Admiral Reeves, who was familiar with Goff’s work in Alaska, had Goff assigned to the base operations staff. Goff would remain there until he was discharged from the Navy in July 1945

In 1943, the Marine command had ordered a project to enlarge some service facilities for men stationed there and their civilian visitors (families). The project included remodeling eight existing buildings and constructing the newly-approved McCann Memorial Chapel. Captain James Wilson, Chief Engineering Officer of the base, assigned CPO Goff the job of designing all of the projects. He reminded Goff that the same restrictions he had experienced in Alaska would apply here.

The chapel employed two surplus warehouse-type Quonset huts, each 40 feet (12 m) by 100 feet (30 m) and laid end-to-end, as the basic enclosure. A pylon, on which was mounted a two-sided cross, penetrated the hut wall behind the altar. Since the chapel had to be multi-denominational, one side of the cross (designated “Protestant”) was unadorned. The reverse side of the cross (“Catholic”) was adorned with a crucifix. For Jewish services, the cross could be concealed by the tablets of Moses.

According to Nicolaides, the Camp Parks chapel was purchased in 1956, as surplus military property and rebuilt in San Lorenzo, California., No more has been published about the building.

Post-war period – He also obtained a teaching position with the School of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma in 1942. Despite being largely self-taught, Goff was named chairman of the school in 1943. This was his most productive period. In his private practice, Goff built a large number of residences in the American Midwest, developing his singular style of organic architecture that was client- and site-specific.

In 1955, Goff, who was homosexual, was accused of “endangering the morals of a minor”, as homosexuality was not socially acceptable in Oklahoma in 1955. As a result of the unproven claims, he was forced to resign from his position at the University of Oklahoma. Historians and writers have expressed their belief that Goff was politically forced from his position specifically for being homosexual.

In 1955, Goff relocated his studio to the Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, which had been designed by his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright. There he continued to produce novel designs, and also spent considerable time traveling and lecturing. Articles about his ideas and designs appeared frequently in professional magazines, such as Progressive Architecture, Art in America and Architectural Forum. In 1960–1961 he had Arthur Dyson as an apprentice in his office and from 1958-1960 Harvey Ferrero also apprenticed with him.

Bavinger House – Goff’s accumulated design portfolio of 500 projects (about one quarter of them built) demonstrates a restless, sped-up evolution through conventional styles and forms at a young age, through the Prairie Style of his heroes and correspondents Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan, then into original design. Finding inspiration in sources as varied as Antoni Gaudi, Balinese music, Claude Debussy, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, and seashells, Goff’s mature work had no precedent and he has few heirs other than his former assistant, New Mexico architect Bart Prince, and former student, Herb Greene.[12] His contemporaries primarily followed tight functionalistic floorplans with flat roofs and no ornament. Goff’s idiosyncratic floorplans, attention to spatial effect, and use of recycled and/or unconventional materials such as gilded zebrawood, cellophane strips, cake pans, glass cullet, Quonset Hut ribs, ashtrays, and white turkey feathers, challenge conventional distinctions between order and disorder.

Many of Goff’s designs are on display at the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In 2002 director Heinz Emigholz produced the documentary film Goff in the Desert which depicts 62 of Bruce Goff’s buildings. He also used imagery from this movie for the music video Celtic Ghosts of German band Kreidler.

Goff was active from 1920s til his death, with posthumous projects completed by associates. His works were considered for listing on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The following are selected major works:

Goff’s contributions to the history of 20th-century architecture are widely praised. His extant archive—including architectural drawings, paintings, musical compositions, photographs, project files, and personal and professional papers—is held by the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Bruce Goff’s headstone, designed by his student Grant Gustafson. His Bavinger House was awarded the Twenty-five Year Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1987, and Boston Ave Methodist Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1999.

Death – Goff died in Tyler, Texas, on August 4, 1982. His cremated remains are interred in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois, with a marker designed by Grant Gustafson (one of Goff’s students) that incorporates a glass cullet fragment salvaged from the ruins of the Joe D. Price House and Studio.

9. Ceramic Dog – “Muslim Jewish Resistance (feat. Marc Ribot)”
from: TYRU Still Here? (feat. Marc Ribot) / Northern Spy / April 27, 2018
[Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars out of 5 with Matt Collar stating, “the pugilistic, stylistically expansive third album from Ceramic Dog, guitarist/singer Ribot’s punk-infused trio with bassist/singer Shahzad Ismaily and drummer/singer Ches Smith. Grounded by Ribot’s mutative, buzzy guitar lines and the band’s taut, often humorous lyrics piping with literate rage, YRU Still Here? has the feel of an ’80s hardcore punk 7″ recorded on a four-track over an intense few hours. While the band’s dissonant, MC5-esque brand of punk, improvisational jazz, and avant-garde rock has always evinced a kind of leftist artistic ire, it’s never been as overtly politically and socially minded as it is here”. PopMatters’ John Garratt rated the album 8 out of 10, saying, “Ceramic Dog slammed their collective hand onto a truly volatile moment to capture some appropriately volatile music. In a time when nationalism seems to be far too en vouge for comfort, you can always count on certain voices being raised (shouted?). Ribot was one of those voices before, and there’s no way he’s going to shut up now. … the album’s undercurrent muddies the water just enough to remind the listener that Marc Ribot and Ceramic Dog will never take the easy way out, even during the best of times. Sometimes, that’s how you stumble upon a future classic”. Marc Ribot was born May 21, 1954. He is an American guitarist and composer. His work has touched on many styles, including no wave, free jazz, rock, and Cuban music. Ribot is also known for collaborating with other musicians, most notably Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Vinicio Capossela and John Zorn. Ribot was born in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in the Montrose section of South Orange, the son of a noted physician. He has worked extensively as a session guitarist. He has performed and recorded with Tom Waits, Caetano Veloso, John Zorn, David Sylvian, Jack McDuff, Wilson Pickett, The Lounge Lizards, Arto Lindsay, T-Bone Burnett, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Cibo Matto, Sam Phillips, Elvis Costello, Tift Merritt, Allen Ginsberg, Foetus, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Susana Baca, The Black Keys, Vinicio Capossela, Alain Bashung, McCoy Tyner, Elton John, Madeleine Peyroux, Marianne Faithfull, Diana Krall, Mike Patton, Stormin’ Norman & Suzy Williams, Neko Case, Joe Henry, Allen Toussaint, Ikue Mori and others. IN 2018 Ribot also released Songs of Resistance 1948 – 2018, assembling a set of songs that spoke to this political moment with appropriate ambition, passion, and fury. The eleven songs on the record are drawn from the World War II anti-Fascist Italian partisans, the U.S. civil rights movement, and Mexican protest ballads, as well as original compositions, and feature a wide range of guest vocalists, including Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Meshell Ndegeocello, Justin Vivian Bond, Fay Victor, Sam Amidon, and Ohene Cornelius. Ribot began working on the project at the end of 2016, responding not just to the American elections, but to the political trends he was seeing around the world. “I am alarmed by Trump and the movement he’s part of,” he says. “I’ve spent a good chunk of my life running around the world on tour—I’m kind of an accidental internationalist—and I see that he’s not an isolated phenomenon. And if we don’t deal with what is going on, it is going to deal with us.” ]

10. John Zorn – “A Void”
from: Insurrection / Tzadik / April 20, 2018
[John Zorn was born September 2, 1953, and is an American composer, arranger, record producer, saxophonist, and multi-instrumentalist with hundreds of album credits as performer, composer, and producer across a variety of genres including jazz, rock, hardcore, classical, surf, metal, soundtrack, ambient, and improvised music.
