4. Julia Holter – “This is A True Heart”

[3rd studio album from 30 year old Julia Holter who has been compared to: Laurie Anderson, Julianna Barwick, Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom, and Stereolab. Her father once performed with Pete Seeger. Her mother, Carole Shammas, is a prominent academic and currently holds the John R. Hubbard Chair in History at the University of Southern California. Besides playing and recording music, Holter tutors students and works with a nonprofit organization for teenagers in South Central Los Angeles. A graduate of CalArts, where she studied composition, Holter released her debut studio album, Tragedy, in August 2011.]

5. Crocodiles – “I Like It In The Dark”
from: Crimes of Passion / Frenchkiss Records / August 20, 2013
[4th studio album by noise pop/indie pop band from San Diego, CA. The group was formed in 2008 by core members Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell after the break-up of their former punk bands Some Girls and The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. Brandon Welches also played in an early incarnation of Dum Dum Girls and he is married to frontwoman Dee Dee Penny. The album was produced by Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes in Los Angeles, California. Guests on the album include Gregg Foreman of Delta 72 and Cat Power, soul singer Afrodyete of Breakestra as well as Welchez’ brother, jazz musician Josh Welchez.]

[In September 2010, Crocodiles released an instrumental song, “Kill Joe Arpaio”, referencing the controversial anti-immigrant Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Arpaio heard the song and responded using twitter, “Msg for the San Diego band ‘Alligators’ who wrote new song called ‘Kill Joe Arpaio’: BITE ME,”. Arpaio also referenced the song during an appearance on Phoenix TV channel KPHO, saying “I’m a little concerned about the music, where kids can get this type of music. I think it sends a bad message. I understand freedom of speech, but there has to be a line of threatening a law enforcement official.” Crocodiles responded via Spin Magazine saying “Maybe if the song was called ‘I’m Gonna Kill Joe Arpaio,’ he’d have a case but what we are attacking is the attitudes and policies he represents. In reality, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that his much-deserved heart attack comes soon; the world can always use one less racist.” ]

6. Superchunk – “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo”
from: I Hate Music / Merge Records / August 20, 2013
[10th studio album from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, indie rock band consisting of singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. Formed in 1989, they helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. Their energetic, high-velocity style and do-it-yourself ethics were influenced by punk rock. The band released a string of full length album’s and compilations throughout the 90’s. Members McCaughan and Ballance founded the successful independent record label Merge Records in 1989 as a way to release music from Superchunk and music created by friends, which has expanded to include artists from around the world like Arcade Fire and The Magnetic Fields.]

7. Ty Segall – “Sleeper”

10:30 – Interview with Idris Raoufi of The 816 Bike Collective

Idris Raoufi is a co-founding member of the 816 Bicycle Collective a volunteer run organization working to rescue, repair and redistribute bicycles. The collective wants to increase the bike community to promote alternative transportation that is healthy, inexpensive, and with zero emissions. The Kansas City Bicycle Federation currently owns the building at 518 E. 31st St. intended to house The 816 Bicycle Collective non-profit community bicycle shop, as well as other like-minded individuals and organizations.

All bikes are built up by WRENCH mechanics and are double checked for safety. The goal of the list build-up is to provide a bicycle that rolls, stops and is safe to ride; for any further maintenance or upgrades, our shop is here to assist with those needs. Each WRENCH volunteer has a dedicated shift on either THURSDAY or SATURDAY and attends WRENCH meetings. WRENCH volunteers help patrons of the collective with bike needs during any shop hours and often are responsible for opening, greeting, running and/or closing the shop. WRENCH volunteers have a say in how the shop is run, serve as both student and teacher, have an overall understanding of how the shop works, and basic mechanic skills.

The 816 Bicycle Collective purchased outright three under-loved buildings at the corner of 31st and Cherry. This affords us the unique opportunity to take ownership of our future and implement the programming we’ve always dreamed of. In addition to the new home of The 816, these buildings will provide space for other likeminded non-profits and businesses to sustain the operations of the buildings.

Idris is also one of the organizers of Main Street Day, Saturday, Sept. 7, and The Cyclovia Festival a car-free and care-free environment for walkers, skaters, cyclists. Main Street Day, is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 7, 11:00am to 4:00pm. Main Street will be closed off from 34th to 40th Streets, with through-traffic stops at Armour Blvd. and 39th Street.

Last week we said goodbye to a friend, a musician, an activist, a singer, a songwriter, an organizer, a founder, a rock & roller, a warrior, a voice, a beauty, a daughter, a wife. The following is Abigail Henderson’s Obituary, as published in the KC Star on August 31, 2013, with additional notes, and 4 songs, from 4 bands, Abigail played with from 2001 to 2013.

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, 36, died Aug. 27, 2013 at her home in Kansas City after a five-year battle with cancer. Abigail was born April 8, 1977, in New York. In 1984, she moved to a suburb of Detroit. In 1999, she moved to KC to live with her mother, Carol Pfander, who preceded her in death. Abigail attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in English. While at UMKC, she was co-founder and co-director of the Association of Women Students. The association sponsored several events, including an appearance by Angela Davis, a performance of “The Vagina Monologues” and a “Take Back the Night” vigil. After college, she also helped organize “Beauty Slays the Beast,” a benefit for political-activism and voter awareness. While in college, Abigail started playing guitar. In 2001, she started her first band, Trouble Junction.

9. Trouble Junction – “Middle West”

[The songs were recorded in Spring 2003. Trouble Junction were: Abigail Henderson, guitar & vocals; Mike Stover, guitar; Calandra Potter, vocals Guitar; Jeff Williams, bass; and John Bersuch, drums. This music was recorded and mixed by John Velghe who told me that when Abigail unleashed her powerful voice in his home studio, plaster fell from the ceiling.]

In the fall of 2003, singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson and guitarist Chris Meck got together and started writing songs. They confessed that their first songs were “pretty country…pretty… cow-punkish.” Mike Stover wrote on facebook that, “Trouble Junction had to end so that Abigail could start the next chapters.” In 2003, Abigail started the band The Gaslights with Chris Meck, who would later become her husband. The Gaslights recorded five albums, releasing three of them.

As we approach our 500th show this fall, I remember my friend Anne Winter, who inspired me to volunteer in community radio and so much more. Anne was instrumental in nudging me into working on many great projects and shows. I started doing this radio program the same year The Gaslights released their debut recording. Prominently displayed on the New Releases shelf at Recycled Sounds, Anne’s record store, it was Anne Winter who encouraged me to check out The Gaslights first release, “Midwest Hotel.”

The Gaslights toured & recorded from 2004 to 2008. After 9 bass players, 3 drummers, 2 vans, 1 dead moose, 1 impromptu marriage, countless tours of the United States, 3 tours in Europe, 3 full length releases. The Gaslights ended.

In early 2008, Abigail was diagnosed with Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer. In response to her battle with a health insurance company and daunting medical bills, she and others in the music community founded the Midwest Music Foundation, a group that sponsors health care programs and provides financial relief to local musicians who have suffered a health care crisis. Since 2009, the MMF has distributed $30,000 in health-care grants. It also co-sponsored the Well Women’s Clinic, which provides free screenings for female musicians. Abigail also founded Apocalypse Meow, an annual fundraiser for the MMF.

Doing this radio show has taught me about the growing & fertile KC Music Scene. Abigail was always fostering the community, as a songwriter & performer, but also as an organizer. A frequent guest on WMM, she came on the air to talk about Apocalypse Meow & The MidCoast Takeover. On one of her earliest appearances, Abigail told me,”We think of this as OUR radio show.” She was right. In fact, 90.1 FM, belongs to all of us. She knew that.

In 2010, Abigail & Chris formed: Atlantic Fadeout with Dutch Humphrey on bass, vocals; and Amy Farrand on drums. Abigail had lost her hair, but not her power. Anyone who saw Atlantic Fadeout live, could not deny the spirit in her performance. Like opera, you felt the song, because Abigail imprinted her lyrics into your heart, with the strength of her voice.

11. Atlantic Fadeout – “Better Run of Bad Luck”

[Debut AF featuring: the great…Abigail Henderson on lead vocals and guitar; Chris Meck lead guitar, steel guitar, vocals; Dutch Humphrey on bass, vocals; and Amy Farrand on drums. The new band was created from the ashes of The Gaslights, combined with the super powers of Amy Farrand who plays bass in American Catastrophe (amoung several other bands) and Dutch Humphrey who sings lead in Cherokee Rock Rifle.]

Abigail had undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy treatments. In January 2012 her cancer reappeared and she tried an experimental treatment. As reported in the Kansas City Star, “She took a last-ditch experimental drug and recovered, but not unscathed. The cancer had paralyzed one of her vocal cords. Still, she did not give up her music. Instead, she and Meck started Tiny Horse, a folk duo that would grow into a full band.” She told The Star last October, just days before the 5th annual Apocalypse Meow, “I used to nail notes to the walls, I can’t do that anymore. I had to find a different path. It’s like a guitar player who loses fingers: You can still play, you just have to figure out how to do it differently.”

In addition to her mother, Abigail was preceded in death by her father, Frank Henderson, who died in 2007. Abigail is survived by her husband and many friends and music fans in the KC and Lawrence area. A memorial in her honor was held Sat, Aug. 31, at Unity Temple on The Plaza. After the services, a wake was held that lasted until the sunrise.

This year Abigail Henderson and Chris Meck released the beautiful EP, “Darkly Sparkly” from their most recent band: Tiny Horse. Abigail’s final live performance in Kansas City was at Knuckleheads on July 11, when Tiny Horse opened for the BoDeans.

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, your life was cut short, way too early, but in the last 10 years you did more than many will do in 60 years, and you have left us better off than we were before you were here. We will keep your light shining!

Writer, actor, musician, artist, teacher, singer, songwriter – Vi Tran was born near Saigon, Vietnam and raised in southwestern Kansas. He began performing as a toddler in the refugee camps of southeast Asia. Other refugees took pity on the young (and literally starving) artist, giving him what food they could spare. Vi Tran considers his life an open-ended refugee story and All-American tale, full of landlocked sailors and broken lovers; loss and discovery; but most of all, hope. Vi has appeared in Theatres all across Kansas City as an actor, has also become a big part of the Kansas City Music Scene and is on the verge of releasing his debut full length recording “American Heroine.”

Formed in 2005, the band self-released several EPs between 2007 and 2011. In 2012 the group was signed to Jagjaguwar Records. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studio.]

2. Cowboy Indian Bear – “Does Anybody See You Out?”

[First Single release download from their upcoming 2nd full-length album: “Live Old, Die Young” that will be released on White Vinyl in April! The songs were recorded over a three year period, where the band was also constantly touring, living on the road, keeping the van running. [St. Louis based band via Chicago. Paige Brubeck on vocals/guitar/keys, and Evan Sult (formerly of Harvey Danger) on drums/vocals/tapes. In the past few years the band has opended for Neon Trees, Dresden Dolls, Deerhoof, and Chuck Berry. While at home, Sleepy Kitty runs a screenprinting studio out of a 19th century warehouse where they specialize in handprinted show posters for bands & venues in St. Lu, Chicago & NYC.]

[The Deli KC announced on their blog last week that The Deli’s Best Emerging Kansas City Artist of 2012 is Radkey! The three-piece band swept the competition, with a landslide of votes from local music jurors. Taking second place was Making Movies, followed closely by Schwervon! The complete ranking of the list of 48 very fine Kansas City area bands is posted at kansascity.thedelimagazine.com. Radkey is a band made up of three teenage brothers Darrion, Isaiah, and Solomon. Their influences include The Who and Nirvana.]

Sean Starowitz is a 2010 graduate of the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the Kansas City Art Institute. Sean is also the co-founder of Bread! KC, with classmate Andrew Erdrich that since 2010 has fed over 1000 attendees and raised over $12,000 in grants for art and community projects. Last year Sean and Andrew created The Speakeasy a six-week temporary cultural center at the La Esquina Gallery, for the Charlotte Street Foundation. Currently Bread! KC is collaborating with the UMKC Theatre Department, for “Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food,” written and directed by Stephanie Roberts. Sean Starowitz joined to discuss the launch of Byproduct: The Laundromat, a project he organized and received a Rocket Grant through the Andy Warhol Foundation to produce, that begins at 7:00 PM this Sat, February 9th, at Walnut Place Laundromat in KCMO.

During the first wash cycle, the series will begin with a screening of Kentucky-based filmmaker Ron Schildknect’s “My Porcelain Past,” a short documentary about that chronicles the last day of operation for a Louisville, Kentucky landmark, a White Castle Restaurant. You are from Louisville.

During the dry cycle, the programming will continue with KCAI professor and poet Jordan Stempleman, who will host a Common Sense Reading.

Middle of The Map Festival Announcement…

Now in its 3rd year, Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest, curated by The Record Machine, returns to Kansas City this spring with an expanded lineup. Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest is the brainchild of Nathan Reusch of The Record Machine. This year’s Music Fest will take place April 4th through 6th at the Record Bar, Riot Room, The Uptown Theater, Union, Gusto Lounge, and Westport Coffeehouse.

Returning to the Fest for the second year, the Forum will feature speakers, technological and cultural panel dialogues, collaborative performances April 17th 18th and 19th at OfficePort in the Crossroads Arts District.

The Festival expands this year to include its first Film Fest taking place May 1 – 5 at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown KC.

“Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film” was the 3rd full length release from KC based singer-songwriter, Folkicide, who has described his music as “despair-core” and writes that his vision of constructive pessimism, he hopes in time, will be recognized as a new acoustical genre, fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Since 2010 Folkicide has released 4 full-length recordings and one EP, writing and arranging and recording over 60 tracks. Folkicide is also a visual artist. Folkicide translated is death of folk? Folkicide explained his transition from Punk and Rock and Roll to his solo work playing non-electric. The sounds of the acoustic guitar, the expression.

Folkicide would appear to be KC’s own Nihilist anti-hero, truly rejecting all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.

“Empire of The Ants” is one of Folkicide’s songs from a few years ago, that he is adding drums for a future Mikal Shapiro video involving the song.

The titles of Folkicide’s recordings reflect the darkness of his songs and lyrics: Let’s Worship Degenerates, Ultimate Decimation Blues, Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film, The Genocide is Mean.

Last year Folkicide released “The Genocide is Mean” EP in July 1, 2012. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith at his magical tractor shed in Perry, KS.

After four years of tinkering with the idea, Folkicide’s NATO was finally recorded during April through August 2012 by Jonathan Brokow (the Anti-Roy Thomas Baker) mostly in the Folkicide basement via 4 track cassette.

It was engineered and mastered mid-August by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studio.

All songs were originally composed by the various Queen members and then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony intended because he truly loves Queen (well, pre-Hot Space Queen anyway) and NATO in particular.

Even though the songs were written by Queen, the lyrics, especially Bohemian Rhapsody seems perfect for Folkicide’s “pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization.”

Folkicide discussed the challenges of covering an entire record.

Remembering MLK

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Wednesday MidDay Medley celebrated the life of human rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Born Jan. 15, 1929. MLK led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King’s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination thru civil disobedience and non-violent means.

By the time of his death in 1968, Dr. King had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 198I.

[Trio from Perth, Australia, a psychedelic rock project of Kevin Parker. The band came to prominence in 2010 with the release of their debut album, Innerspeaker. In late 2010, Parker ran into some problems with the new album, he had all his demos, half of the new album, on his iPod, and he had a hole in his bag, and it fell out somewhere between Amsterdam and London. The demos were later found and returned to Parker who relocated to Paris in 2011, for the mixing of the album, with help of famed producer Dave Fridmann.]

[The 15 piece ensemble welcomed 6 additional musicians to record “Shelf Life” their 2nd full-length release, 2 years in the making. Recorded live at the Cooler Studio in Kansas City, Kansas, with Chad Meise, and mastered by Collin Jordan at the Boiler Room in Chicago, using both vintage analog and modern digital technologies. Part-2, of our 4-week special: The 112 Best Recordings of 2012. Based on the playlists of Wednesday MidDay Medley. In 2012 we’ve played over 700 of New & Local Releases, we’ve presented dozens of LIVE in-studio performances from area performers, and we’ve interviewed over 150 local and national guests. 70% of the recordings on our list were locally produced. 1. (84.) Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Windshield Smasher”
from: Cobra Juicy / Rad Cult / October 22, 2012
[5th, and some say finest, album to date from the psychedelic-electronic-experimental band from Pittsburgh. Their sound is characterized by their use of analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano, Novatron. Little is known about band members who’re all something of an enigma, keeping their true identities hidden behind monikers like: Tobacco, Bullsmear, The Seven Fields of Aphelion Fields. One critic described their music this way: “Imagine that disco put on a blonde wig, a denim jacket, and roller-skates; then proceeded to do a considerable quantity of acid and dance around in the abandoned roller rink in your hometown.”]

2. (83.) Gemini Revolution – “Other Side of Yesterday”
from: Gemini Revolution / Upstairs Recordings / September 20, 2012
[This year they also released: EPs: “Informal Revolution” “Sizuka.” Gemini Revolution is: Dedric Moore, Delaney Moore, Mika Tayana. They were asked to perform at this year’s Pop Montreal Festival in September 20. Upstairs Recordings of Vancouver, Canada, released their full-length debut to coincide with the festival.]

3. (82.) Alt-J – “Fitzpleasure”
from: An Awesome Wave / Infectious Records / September 18, 2012
[Debut, and Winner of The 2012 British Mercury Prize. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning. The band explains that, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change.” Gwil, Joe Newman [guitar/vocals], Gus Unger-Hamilton [keyboards] and Thom Green [drums] met at Leeds University in 2007.]

4. (81.) Folkicide – “Power To The People”
from: The Genocide is Mean EP / Independent / August 18, 2012
[Follow up to “Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film.” Folkicide is the outlet for Kansas City songwriter Burnie Booth’s vision of constructive pessimism that he hopes in time will be recognized as a new acoustical genre fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Folkicide continues their pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith, at his magical tractor shed, in Perry, Kansas. Folkicide also released, “Folkicide’s Night at The Opera,” this year. Recorded April through August, 2012, mostly in Folkicide’s basement. Engineered and Mastered by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studios. All songs were originally written by Queen members, then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony because he truly loves Queen (pre-Hot Space) and Night at The Opera in particular.]

5. (80.) Gossip – “Move in The Right Direction”
from: A Joyful Noise / Columbia Records a division of Sony Records / May 11, 2012
[Formed in 1999 in Olympia, Washington with vocalist Beth Ditto, guitarist Nathan “Brace Paine” Howdeshell and drummer Kathy Mendonca. All 3 were originally from Searcy, Arkansas; Mendonca moved to Olympia to attend Evergreen State College and Howdeshell and Ditto followed. Drummer Kathy Mendonca left the band to pursue a career as a midwife. Established punk drummer Hannah Blilie joined to replace her.]

6. (79.) The Clementines – “Fair Trade”

[We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our April 25 show. Since then they’ve added Stephanie Williams on Drums, and Travis Earndshaw on Bass. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.” Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: that her vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.” Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. [Katy & Go-Go is vocalist and guitarist Katy Guillen (of The B’Dinas) and drummer extraordinaire Go-Go Ray (of Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle, Samantha Fish, John Velghe). They hit the KC stages in January of 2011, securing a steady monthly gig at The Brick’s Rhythm, Roots, & Soul Saturday Matinee. Nominated for a Pitch Music Award for Best Blues Band. [Classic 1980 debut album by composer and computer music pioneer Laurie Spiegel. The album is reissued here for the first time in a massively expanded two-CD set, containing all four original album tracks plus an additional 15 tracks from the same period, nearly all previously unreleased! Chicago born composer. She has worked at Bell Laboratories, in computer graphics, and is known primarily for her electronic-music compositions and her algorithmic composition software Music Mouse. Spiegel was seen by some as a pioneer of the New York, new-music scene. Spiegel’s piece “Sediment” was used in the “cornucopia scene” of the 2012 movie The Hunger Games.]

Case #1 – 90.1 FM is a grassroots movement, a radio station created by the people in the village. 35 years ago those people created a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization called, The MidCoast Radio Project and for ten years volunteers worked to raise the funds to buy a signal, a tower, and create a physical station with studios and offices, to serve the community. In February of 1988, KKFI began broadcasting over the airwaves…

Those first radio shows were prerecorded on reel to reel tape in the basement of Tom Crane’s house on Pennsylvania Ave, and then delivered to the tower site and transmitter, where they were played. Tom Crane was there in the beginning and has played a vital role in KKFI’s development over the years.

Tom Crane talked about the early years, charity bingo, the reel to reel recordings.

Tom also talked about Anne Winter who hosted a KKFI show as “Little Orphan Annie” and produced Kansas City’s very first Punk show on the airwaves.

6. Iris DeMent – “Go On Ahead And Go Home”

[Iris Dement previewed many of her new songs when she was in concert with husband Greg Brown, last year for their 11-11-11 show at The Folly Theatre to benefit St. Mark Child and Family Development Center. Now those songs are part of her brand new release that includes a total of 12 new songs. It is her first full-length release of original songs since 1996.]

Grammy Nominated Iris DeMent has performed at all over the world, at Carnegie Hall, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, and the Grand Ole Opry. She was born in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to KC to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, she first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights. In 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. She made her recording debut in 1991 /1992, with her release: “Infamous Angel.” Iris has collaborated w/ John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, John McCutcheon, Randy Scruggs, Tom Russell and Kansas City bus driver Gary Kirkland. Iris married singer-songwriter Greg Brown on November 21, 2002, while she still lived in KC. They now live together in Iowa. Last week Iris DeMent released her new recording “Sing The Delta” on Flariella Records, that includes 12 new songs. It is her first album of all new material in 16 years, since her fantastic 1996 release, “The Way I Should.” Iris’ new release “Sing The Delta” is already receiving great critical acclaim, and she is currently on the road singing her new songs.

Last year on 11-11-11 Iris and Greg Brown performed together here in Kansas City in a benefit for St. Mark Early Childhood and Family Development Center, That night she surprised me when she only performed one or two songs that I had heard before. Instead she shared with the packed crowd at the Folly, many of her new songs that ended up on this record. Iris discussed the process of writing the songs and getting them recorded and produced in the studio.

I read where Iris has said that she “learned about music from people who didn’t use music as entertainment.” That her “parents lived very on the edge. They had a gazillion kids and came from an area where people live on the edge. They used music as a life source. That music had to come through for them and make them feel like they could get up on Monday and keep going.” She said that “You think that’s one of the reasons why you didn’t write for so long. I learned about music as a life line. I feel like that’s the kind of task I’m trying to take on every time I try and write something. I’ve got to make somebody want to keep going. That’s what music was about.”

Iris DeMent has a long history of doing benefit shows for groups like 90.1 FM. In 2004 she and Greg Brown opened for Amy Goodman at Community Christian Church. In the 2002 she did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio and invited Greg Brown to open the concert at Unity Temple, then several months later she and Greg were married in a private ceremony in the offices of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church here in KC.

Kansas City is where Iris started her musical career, singing in coffeehouses. Iris talked about how she loves that we claim her as one of our own, here in Kansas City.

The liner notes of Iris DeMent’s new record talks about St. Mark Church and how the Church took her in during a dark time of her life. She found inspiration at St. Mark, inspiration from the people of the church and also from the pastor of the church, Rev. Sam Mann who she originally heard over the airwaves of 90.1 FM KKFI, and met at an anti-war rally at the fountains near 47th and Broadway near the Country Club Plaza.

The photographs for Iris DeMent’s new album were taken by her stepdaughter Pieta Brown, all except for one photograph that is in many ways a symbol of this recording, that was photographed by her daughter, Dasha Brown. Iris talked about the photo and it’s special meaning.

The new recording contains many songs about her family, and especially her mother, who died last year at age 93. Iris DeMent’s mother sings on her debut “Infamous Angel” and we definitely feel her presence on “Sing The Delta.” Iris writes that her mother dreamed of being a professional singer, and how she asked Iris one day, “Ain’t you got tard yet of trapesin’ All over the country?”

I read a review of “Sing The Delta” that starts off by referencing Iris DeMent’s song, “Let the Mystery Be” from her debut “Infamous Angel.” The reviewer connected that song to her new 5th release, 20 years later, with new lyrics and stories that continue to examine the “religious doctrine on life and death.” The reviewer also references Iris DeMent’s 2004 release “Life Line” which was a collection of traditional protestant hymns.

In reading many of the reviews of Iris DeMent’s new recording, I was struck by the personal relationship Iris has with her fans, who fell in love with “Infamous Angel” and have followed her through these past 20 years, and this period where she has recorded with so many other artists, toured consistently, but also was busy with her family, husband, and daughter. That because her songs were so honest and heartfelt, and special, her fans accepted and understood why it might have taken some time for this new recording of 12 new songs.

We are in the middle of our Fall Fund Drive here at 90.1 KKFI. Iris has had many connections to this radio station. We mentioned Sam Mann, who at one time hosted a radio program on 90.1 FM. Another person who helped build this station was our mutual friend Anne Winter. Iris talked about how she met Anne Winter.

Iris is currently on the road doing shows in Toronto Canada, along the East Coast and Florida and also on the west coast in California.

Leonard Bernstein called her “The Bible of Opera.” In 2006, Opera News wrote of her: “Nearly thirty years after her death, she’s still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists.” She was born in New York City on December 2, 1923 and she on September 16, 1977, at 53. Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and versatile opera singers of the 20th century. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Tony and Emmy Award winning Playwright Terrence McNally, who has written about Maria Callas in several of his plays including The Lisbon Traviata, put his muse, Maria Callas center stage, for his play of 1995, “Master Class,” that focuses on Maria Callas after she has headlined every major opera house, and accepts an invitation from The Juilliard School to conduct a series of sold-out master classes for a select group of young professionals. Master Class won both the 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play.

Spinning Tree Theatre has created it’s own new identity through the musicals and plays it has produced of these past two years.

In “Master Class” Maria Callas, is glamorous, commanding, larger-than-life, caustic, and surprisingly drop-dead funny. Alternately dismayed and impressed by the students who parade before her, she retreats into recollections about the glories of her own life and career. Included in her musings are her younger years as an ugly duckling, her fierce hatred of her rivals, the unforgiving press that savaged her early performances, her triumphs at La Scala, and her affair with Aristotle Onassis. It culminates into a monologue about sacrifice taken in the name of art.

[We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our April 25 show. Since then they’ve added Stephanie Williams on Drums, and Travis Earndshaw on Bass. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.” Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: that her vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.” Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. The KC acoustic indie rock trio, Clover Noir are the second band we’ve presented this year that was formed with the help of Craigslist. Ben who writes the bands songs decided to post an ad for collaborating musicians on Craiglist where he met Shylette who brought her improvisational violin playing to compliment Ben’s tunes. With Ben’s encouragement, Shylette brought in a Natasha and the trio was formed. Clover Noir join us to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios. Fresh from their KC Fringe Theatre performances the band is currently getting ready to release their debut full length recording. Clover Noir includes: Ben Rekittke on guitar and lead vocal; Shylette Carson on violin and backup vocals; and Natasha Derakhshanian on violin and backup vocals.

On Monday, August 27, we lost a good friend, and writer, Tom Ryan, who reached out to so many of us through his kind and thoughtful words, and keen observations. Tom was one of those special people who took the time to connect with so many and offer collaboration and guidance. A veteran of the US Military, Tom lived all over the United States and all over the world, including: Australia, Japan, Nigeria, Ireland.

In Kansas City Tom was the creator o Words For Art, where he wrote about artists and art. Tom also wrote two other blogs, he was working on a play, he was a poet, essayist, he wrote screenplays, columns, and stories. Tom was full of ideas and through the last three years, he identified with so many with his amazing brain and sensitive demeanor.

We closed the show with a new song that musician Jason Beers was saving for his new banjo CD. Jason wrote that it was, “Kind of a dream to have Tom Ryan and Betse Ellis record with me.”

We also played a track from Elaine McMilian’s 2011 release, “The Messenger” which includes a song she co-wrote with Tom Ryan called “Lullaby (For Girls).”

Tom always took the time to connect, and we feel his absence, and we will give extra love and attention to our dear friend Elaine McMilian, who we hold in our hearts at this difficult time. Love and peace to you all.
