New & MidCoastal Releases + Katy Guillen
+ Ingrid Ingram + Dylan Pyles

Mark plays New & MidCostal Releases from: Hi-Lux, Fullbloods, Katy Guillen & The Drive, Fritz Hutchinson, Una Walkenhorst, Ingrid Ingram, Blackstarkids, Scott Hrabko & The Rabbits, City Pets, Dylan Pyles, The Creepy Jingles, Car Seat Headrest, and Bill Fay.

Ingrid Ingram

At 10:30 Ingrid Ingram joins us live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Ingrid Ingram is a trans-femme musician who uses samples and traditional instruments to create erratic and dreamy soundscapes. On March 8, 2020 Ingrid released her debut full length album, “Worried,” where she explores glam-punk, touching on themes of paranoia, addiction, narcissism and commodified identity in a capitalist society. Prior to this Ingrid has released three singles from “Worried,” plus her EP “Inside Outside” from January 2017, and “Noises And People” from February 2016. Many of the sounds used in these previous two releases were recorded on a phone during a two-year period of travel around the United States and stitched together on friends laptops. Ingrid Ingram also plays bass in the KC based band The Creepy Jingles.

Katy Guillen Photo by Anna Selle

At 11:00 KC’s very own, Katy Guillen joins us to talk about the new 7-song EP from Katy Guillen & The Drive, featuring the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen on guitar & vocals, and Stephanie Williams on drums. The two have sculpted a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of Katy Guillen’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Guillen calls their genre-bending style “indie soul-rock.”

Dylan Pyles

At 11:30 Kansas City based musician, singer, songwriter, Dylan Pyles plays live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Dylan Pyles is a music scholar, record buyer at Mills Record Company, and manager of Wise Blood Books in Westport. Dylan Pyles just released his new 15-track album, “Evil Music for an Ugly World” on February 21, 2020. This is the follow up to his 20-track album, “Popular Songs for the Heart,” released September 20, 2019. Dylan also released the 6-song EP, “Solo Acoustic Guitar Vol. 1,” on September 20, 2019. New & MidCoastal Releases + Teri Quinn
+ Dan Jones & The Squids + Kadesh Flow

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Dirty Projectors – “Overlord”
from: “Overlord” – Single / Domino Recording Co / February 26, 2020
[Scarcely 18 months after the release of their album, “Lamp Lit Prose,” from July 13, 2018, and three months after their live-in-studio album “Sing The Melody” from December 10, 2019, Dirty Projectors return with the new single ‘Overlord.’ It has been called a “Tongue-in-cheek ode to surveillance capitalism? Critique of our primal confusion of charisma for actual leadership? Cautionary tale about blind faith in technology? Anti-fascist manifesto? Who knows, but ’Overlord’ feels like a ‘Both Sides Now’ for our brave new Amazon Prime world. The lyrics are belied by a rootsy, organic arrangement — capo’ed acoustics, upright bass, congas, drum kit & three-part harmony — that must be Dirty Projectors’ loosest and warmest production since Swing Lo Magellan.” ‘Overlord’ is the first Dirty Projectors song to feature the new lineup that lead Projector Dave Longstreth put together around the Lamp Lit Prose touring in 2018/19. Guitarist Maia Friedman handles lead vocals and co-wrote the lyrics with Dave, who wrote and produced the music. Felicia Douglass and Kristin Slipp contribute additional vocals. Nat Baldwin plays upright bass; Mike Johnson is behind the kit. Mauro Refosco plays congas.]

3. Best Coast – “Everything Has Changed”
from: Always Tomorrow / Bethany Cosentino – Concord Records / February 21, 2020
[Best Coast is an American rock duo formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. The band consists of songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Bethany Cosentino (born November 3, 1986) and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. Cosentino, a former child actress, began writing music as a teenager and was formerly a member of the experimentalist drone group Pocahaunted. After a brief tenure at college in New York City, Cosentino returned to the West Coast and began recording lo-fi demos with Bruno, whom she met in the Los Angeles music scene. After a string of 7-inch and cassette-only singles, the band signed to Mexican Summer, who issued the band’s debut, Crazy for You, in 2010. Crazy for You became an unexpected commercial success following Internet buzz surrounding the duo. Lewis Pesacov of Fool’s Gold and Foreign Born produced, engineered and mixed the album. Best Coast added a touring drummer, Ali Koehler of Vivian Girls, and spent much of 2011 on the road for festival appearances and tour dates. Best Coast’s sophomore effort, The Only Place, was released in 2012 and featured a cleaner sound than their previous releases. In 2013, the duo released an EP, Fade Away, and their third studio album, California Nights, was released in May 2015. More recently, Best Coast released their fourth studio album, Always Tomorrow, in February 2020.]

Dan Jones was born and raised in Liberty, MO. Dan went to The University of Iowa with a trombone scholarship and earned a degree in literature, while dabbling with creative writing and guitar.

Dan migrated to Eugene, Oregon, where he lived for 21 years and recorded a coffee shop story-song cassette with Derek Trost called “For Your Radio.” Dan played hundreds of acoustic shows in the americana and folk circuit. Eventually he transitioned to his passion of playing punk and indie-influenced rock bands followed.

Dan Jones and The Squids is a collective that over the years has had lots of members. Initially the band recorded three albums: “One Man Submarine,” “Get Sounds Now,” and “Totally Human.” Later Dan formed The Golden Motors with Dan Schmid, Jivan Valpey Scott K, and Mike Last and released one self-titled record, and one that Dan released after the band ended in 2018, “Golden Motors II.” Dan also made an EP with his friend Peter Wilde called, “My Name Is John Smith.”

As a kid Dan Jones loved classic 70’s singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and Billy Joel, then got into into new wave and punk and all the great 80’s underground bands (SST stuff especially). Dan bought every 80’s Lou Reed tape I could at the Liberty Wal-Mart. In Iowa City, Dan discovered Neil Young, americana, college rock, and great Iowa bands like House of Large Sizes and The Hollowmen.

Dan Jones has played gigs with Mike Watt, fIREHOSE, John Doe, Curt Kirkwood, Calvin Johnson, Dinosaur Jr, Steve Wynn, The Decemberists, The Minus 5, Roy Harper, Peter Case, Stew, James McMurtry, Arthur Lee, and of course umpteen hundred local and touring bands who, on any given night, could be the greatest band on earth.

Dan Jones moved back to Kansas City in 2013 and started up The Squids again and contacted his longtime friend from his youth Steve Tulipana> Steve Tulipana called up his college friends Alex Alexander, and Matt Ronan, playing songs from my Northwest years and developing new material as well.

In Kansas City, I make my living at a gonzo hive of creatives and craftspeople called Dimensional Innovations.

“In 2008, the Turtle Island String Quartet tplayed the Lied Center of Kansas and that led to Bangere’s crucial meeting with the two-time Grammy-winning leader of that group, David Balakrishnan. 10:09 – Yoko Ono B-Day Celebration

4. Yoko Ono —“Imagine”
from: Warzone / Yoko Ono / October 28, 2018
[WARZONE is an album by Yoko Ono released on October 24, 2018, her 50th year anniversary as a musician. It consists of 13 songs she picked up and reconstructed from her past albums released from 1970 to 2009. It also includes the newest version of Imagine by John Lennon. Since Take Me to the Land of Hell in 2013, this is the Ono’s first in 5 years and 20th original album in total (including collaborations with John Lennon). Yoko Ono Lennon was born February 18, 1933. She is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and peace activist. Her work also encompasses performance art, which she performs in both English and Japanese, and filmmaking. She was married to English singer-songwriter John Lennon of the Beatles from 1969 until his murder in 1980. Ono grew up in Tokyo and also spent several years in New York City. She studied at Gakushuin University, but withdrew from her course after two years and moved to New York in 1953 to live with her family. She spent some time at Sarah Lawrence College and then became involved in New York City’s downtown artists scene, which included the Fluxus group. She first met Lennon in 1966 at her own art exhibition in London, and they became a couple in 1968 and wed the following year. With their performance Bed-Ins for Peace in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969, Ono and Lennon used their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War. The feminist themes of her music have influenced musicians as diverse as the B-52s and Meredith Monk. She achieved commercial and critical acclaim in 1980 with the chart-topping album Double Fantasy, a collaboration with Lennon that was released three weeks before his murder. Public appreciation of Ono’s work has shifted over time and was helped by a retrospective at a Whitney Museum branch in 1989 and the 1992 release of the six-disc box set Onobox. Retrospectives of her artwork have also been presented at the Japan Society in New York City in 2001, in Bielefeld, Germany, and the UK in 2008, Frankfurt, and Bilbao, Spain, in 2013 and The Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 2015. She has a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox, from her marriage to Anthony Cox and a son, Sean Taro Ono Lennon, from her marriage to Lennon. She collaborates musically with Sean.]

6. Yoko Ono – “What A Bastard The World Is”
from: Approximately Infinite Universe / Secretly Canadian-Chimera / January 8, 1973 [2017]
[Double album by Yoko Ono, originally released on Apple Records. It was a departure from the experimental avant garde rock of her first albums towards a more conventional pop/rock sound, while also dabbling in feminist rock. It peaked at number 193 in the U.S. The 1997 CD reissue on Rykodisc added two acoustic demos of songs from this era, that were later released on 1981’s Season of Glass. It was released again by Rykodisc in 2007. The album was recorded at The Record Plant in NYC, except for the basic tracks for “Catman” and “Winter Song”, which were taped at Butterfly Studios. Ono produced the album with John Lennon, whose participation marked a rare music-related activity for him after the failure of the couple’s politically themed “Some Time in New York City.” Lennon also sang the final verse of the song, “I Want My Love to Rest Tonight.” As on the latter album, Ono used the NYC band Elephant’s Memory as her backing musicians. Mick Jagger dropped in for some of the sessions. He recalled playing guitar very loudly with Lennon. Jagger said Ono “was really trying to sing properly. She’s not screaming, she’s really trying to sing.”]

7. Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe – “Exercises In Free Love (New Orchestrated Version)”
from: Never Boring (Deluxe Editon) / Hollywood Records / October 10, 2019
[Never Boring is a box set compilation of solo work by English musician Freddie Mercury, released on 11 October 2019. The box set contains three CDs and a collection of promotional videos on both Blu-ray and DVD, as well as a 120-page hardbound book. All three discs were also issued individually on CD, vinyl, digital and streaming services.Barcelona” is a single released by Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury and operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé. A part of their collaborative album Barcelona released October 10, 1988, it also appeared on Queen’s Greatest Hits III. The song reflects Mercury’s love of opera with his high notes and Caballé’s operatic vocals, backed by a full orchestra. Originally released in 1987, it was one of the biggest hits of Mercury’s solo career, reaching number eight in the UK Singles Chart. After Mercury’s death in 1991, it was featured at the 1992 Summer Olympics, after which the track climbed even higher, peaking at number two in the UK, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Mercury had been a long-time fan of opera, especially favouring Montserrat Caballé. In 1986, he mentioned on Spanish television that he would be glad to see her in person. They had a friendly initial meeting in Barcelona in February 1987. Later, when the city had been chosen for the 1992 Summer Olympics, Caballé, a native of the city, was asked to help with producing a song for the games. She summoned Mercury for the task. Caballé became enthusiastic about the project and instead of recording a single, she proposed to make an album, on which Mercury agreed. The song “Barcelona” had to be its opening song, to be completed by 1988, and to be submitted as a candidate for the 1992 Olympic theme (the selection was scheduled for 1988, four years before the Games). The recording was complicated by Caballé’s tight schedule. Thus to spare her time, Mercury recorded the song, singing Caballé’s part in falsetto. He would then send a tape to Caballé to prepare her for the joint studio sessions. The song was co-written by Mercury with Mike Moran, who also appeared in its video and played piano and all keyboards for the studio recording. The song starts with an orchestral introduction, which fades and is followed by Mercury and Caballé singing alternately their solo lines, sometimes merging into a duet. When singing the chorus “Barcelona” and a few other parts for the studio version, Mercury dubs over his voice in his usual multi-tracking style. Mercury leads the song whereas Caballé provides a powerful background soprano. Since Caballé covers the soprano part, Mercury sings in his natural baritone voice rather than the forced tenor that was common in his other recordings. The song has been described as a rare textbook example of a combination of pop and opera singing which accentuated their differences. Whereas Mercury articulates his every word, Caballé focuses on the tone; her lines are much harder to comprehend, and further, she uses both English and Spanish languages. Consequently, she keeps her part melodic throughout all the song at the expense of the text, whereas Mercury has to resort from singing to nearly shouting at the crescendo part in order to deliver his words.]

8. Passengers – “Miss Sarajevo”
from: Original Soundtracks 1 / Island Records / November 6, 1995
[Original Soundtracks 1 is a studio album recorded by rock band U2 and Brian Eno under the pseudonym Passengers as a side project. Released on 6 November 1995, the album is a collection of songs written for mostly imaginary films (the exceptions being songs for Ghost in the Shell, Miss Sarajevo, and Beyond the Clouds). Due to Eno’s involvement as a full songwriting partner and the album’s experimental nature, the moniker “Passengers” was chosen to distinguish it from U2’s conventional albums. It was commercially unnoticed by the band’s standards and received generally mixed reviews. Guest musicians on the record included Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti (on “Miss Sarajevo”) and producer Howie B, who would co-produce U2’s following album, Pop (1997).]

9. Aretha Franklin – “Nessun Dorma”
from: Jewels in the Crown: All Star Duets with the Queen / Arista / November 13, 2007
from: Here We Go Again, In The Morning, Nessun Dorma – CD Single / Arista / June 16, 1998
[In 1988 Franklin received global praise after her 1998 Grammy Awards performance. She had initially been asked to come and perform in honor of the 1980 The Blues Brothers film in which she appeared with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. That evening after the show had already begun, Luciano Pavarotti himself contacted show producers and said he was too ill to perform the opera aria “Nessun dorma” as planned. The show’s producers were desperate to fill the time slot, and approached Franklin with their dilemma. She was a friend of Pavarotti, and had sung the selection two nights prior at the annual MusiCares event. She asked to hear Pavarotti’s rehearsal recording, and after listening, agreed that she could sing it in the tenor range that the orchestra was prepared to play in. Over one billion people worldwide saw the performance, and she received an immediate standing ovation. She would go on to record the selection, and perform it live several more times in the years to come; the last time being in Philadelphia for Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Families in September 2015. A small boy was so touched by her performance that he came onto the stage and embraced her while Franklin was still singing.])

Jah Wobble acquired his stage name through the drunken, mumbled version of Wardle’s name by Sid Vicious, which Wobble kept because “people would never forget it”.]

11. Dimitri From Paris – “Monsier Dimitri Joue Du Stylophone”
from: Sacrebleu / Yellow – Atlantic / June 11, 1998
[Dimitri from Paris was born Dimitrios Yerasimos, on October 27, 1963. He is a Turkish-born French music producer and DJ of Greek descent. His musical influences are rooted in 1970s funk and disco sounds that spawned contemporary house music, as well as original soundtracks from 1950s and 1960s movies such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, La Dolce Vita and The Party, which were sampled in his album Sacrebleu. Dimitri fused these sounds with electro and block party hip hop he discovered in the 1980s. Contrary to his musical pseudonym, Dimitri was born not in Paris but born in Peckham, South London, to Rûm parents (Turks of Greek origin), Dimitri grew up in France where he discovered DJ-ing at home, using whatever he could find to “cut and paste” samples from disco hits or in to montages heard on the radio, blending them together to make tapes. This early experimentation helped him launch his DJ career. He started out by DJ-ing at the French station Radio 7, before moving on to Skyrock and finally to Radio NRJ, Europe’s largest FM radio network, in 1986. There, he introduced the first ever house music show to be broadcast in France, while simultaneously producing under the direction of sound designer Michel Gaubert, runway soundtracks for fashion houses such as Chanel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hermès and Yves Saint-Laurent. He also released two solo EPs from 1993 to 1994 and contributed to the Yellow Productions compilation La Yellow 357. In 1996, Dimitri gained worldwide recognition with the release of his first full album, Sacrebleu, released on Yellow Productions. A blend of diverse influences including jazz, original film soundtracks, samba, and organic house, Sacrebleu sold 300,000 copies worldwide and was named Album of the Year by UK’s Mixmag magazine. In 2000, Dimitri followed Sacrebleu up with A Night at the Playboy Mansion (Virgin) and Disco Forever (BBE), followed by My Salsoul in 2001, After the Playboy Mansion in 2002. In 2003, Cruising Attitude was released, to be closely followed by his first outing on UK’s premier dance music label Defected: Dimitri from Paris In the House. He has followed a somewhat glamorous musical path by recording soundtracks and advertising campaigns for fashion houses Chanel, Jean-Paul Gautier and Yves Saint Laurent and remixing hundreds of artists as diverse as Björk, The Cardigans, James Brown, Michael Jackson, New Order and Quincy Jones. He also did the music for the anime Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase and mixed the soundtrack for the French luxury dessin animé Jet Groove produced by Method Films. 2005 saw Dimitri go back to his Funk and Disco roots, with Japanese hip hop producer and über collector DJ Muro for Super Disco Friends a double CD mixdown. In 2006 he offered his House of Love outing to Valentine’s Day’s lovers. Later on Dimitri produced Los Amigos Invisibles “Super Pop Venezuela” album which grabbed a nomination for a Grammy Award.2007 saw the release of the Cocktail Disco project with longtime partner BBE, a handful of disco classics remixes and other surprises down the line. 2009 Night Dubbin’, a post-disco R&B comp. remix album was released.]

12. Barry Adamson – “Vibes Ain’t Nothin’ But The Vibes”
from: Oedipus Schmoedipus / Mute / August 6, 1996
[Barry Adamson was born June 11, 1958, is a Mercury-nominated English pop and rock musician, composer, writer, photographer and filmmaker. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as a member of the post-punk band Magazine and went on to work with Visage, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and the electro musicians Pan Sonic. In addition to prolific solo work, Adamson has also remixed Grinderman, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Recoil and Depeche Mode. He created the seven-minute opus Useless (Escape From Wherever: Pts. 1 & 2) remix for the latter band in 1997. He also worked on the soundtrack for David Lynch’s surrealistic crime film Lost Highway. Adamson was born at Moss Side, Manchester, England. He read comic books from an early age. At school he immersed himself in art, music and film and produced his first song – “Brain Pain” – at the age of 10. His diverse musical tastes range from Alice Cooper to Motown to David Bowie. After leaving school, Adamson drifted into graphic design whilst attending Stockport Art College but quit shortly after, preferring to venture into the exploding punk rock scene of the late 1970s. He joined ex-Buzzcocks singer Howard Devoto’s band Magazine to play the bass guitar, with whom he scored one chart single, “Shot by Both Sides”; in late 1977, he also joined the Buzzcocks, as a temporary replacement for Garth Smith. He played on all of Magazine’s albums and contributed to Devoto’s solo album and his next band, Luxuria. He also contributed to the studio-based band Visage, playing on the ensemble’s first two albums, Visage and The Anvil. After Magazine broke up, Adamson worked with another ex-Buzzcock, Pete Shelley, before joining Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, featuring on four of their albums: From Her to Eternity, The Firstborn Is Dead, Kicking Against the Pricks and Your Funeral, My Trial. After his stint with the band and a European tour with Iggy Pop in 1987, he went solo, releasing an EP, The Man with the Golden Arm in 1988, and his first solo album, Moss Side Story, the following year, the “soundtrack” to a non-existent film noir. The album incorporated newscasts and sampled sound effects and featured guest musicians Marcia Schofield (of The Fall), Diamanda Galas, and former colleagues from the Bad Seeds. Adamson’s second solo album was the soundtrack to a real film this time – Carl Colpaert’s Delusion, and he would go on to provide soundtracks for several other films. Adamson’s third album, Soul Murder, was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize in 1992. His solo work has mostly been influenced by John Barry, Elmer Bernstein and Ennio Morricone, whilst his later works include jazz, electronica, soul, funk, and dub-styles. In 1996, Adamson contributed to the AIDS-Benefit Album, Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip, produced by the Red Hot Organization. His own album that year, Oedipus Schmoedipus, reached #51 in the UK Albums Chart. It would later be included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list, along with Moss Side Story. In 2002, Adamson left his long-term label, Mute Records, and started his own production home, Central Control International. In 2006, he released Stranger on the Sofa, first for his Central Control International imprint, to critical acclaim. Back To The Cat, his second album for the label, was released in March 2008. In 2007 it was announced that Magazine would re-form for concerts in 2008. Adamson took part in the same band line-up that recorded Secondhand Daylight, with the exception of the late John McGeoch, who was replaced by Apollo 440 member Noko. However, Adamson has since withdrawn from the reunion and new recordings. On 27 August 2010, Adamson released “Rag and Bone”, as a digital download and as a 12-inch vinyl record. He then released a studio album, I Will Set You Free, on 30 January 2012. Adamson rejoined the Bad Seeds for the release of their 2013 album, Push the Sky Away. He played bass on several songs and also toured with the band on drums and keyboards to fill in for an ailing Thomas Wydler. Adamson’s “Refugee Song” was included in Derek Jarman’s The Last of England. Adamson also contributed soundtrack material to Gas Food Lodging, David Lynch’s Lost Highway and Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. Back to the Cat’s opening track, “The Beaten Side of Town”, was featured in the hit video game, Alan Wake. He also contributed substantial material to the Delusion soundtrack, which has also been released.]

16. Art d’Ecco —”Mary”
from: Trespasser / Paper Bag / October 12, 2018
[Based in British Columbia, “There’s more than a little David Bowie in both the sonic and fashion leanings of Art d’Ecco, a performer who fluidly crosses musical and gender lines, creating highly memorable tracks — and sporting an unforgettable look. Often labelled “neo glam,” the music boasts hints of everything from ’50s pop to psychedelics, from Velvet Underground-era art rock to Grimes-inspired electronics.” – CBC Music When d’Ecco moved into his grandmother’s cottage on one of the islands, he hadn’t planned on creating a new project. But, as it often does, circumstance charted his course. His grandmother, living with Alzheimer’s, suffered a related phenomenon called ‘sundowning,’ which triggers increased agitation and anxiety around sunset. “The only way to calm this lady down was to sit down at the piano,” says d’Ecco. He would play “Bohemian Rhapsody,” passing it off as Beethoven. After she was relocated, d’Ecco remained in the empty house where he had played as a child. Draped in memory, he gravitated toward the piano, spending the long, lonesome, quiet nights on the bench before the instrument. This is where Art d’Ecco was created. He relocated to a new cottage, built a studio and barricaded himself with copies of Deerhunter’s Cryptograms, Bowie’s Low, and choice krautrock records. In this solitude, d’Ecco would chase tones for hours. The result is a richly-realized confluence of the ferocious spark of those trailblazers and a distinct sadness, with d’Ecco as mad scientist, stitching together these delicious fragments and animating them.]

20. Pretenders — “One More Time”
from: ¡Viva El Amor! / Warner / June 22, 1999
[¡Viva El Amor! (Spanish for Long Live Love) is the 7th studio album by The Pretenders. The band’s lineup is: Chrissie Hynde on vocals & guitar, Martin Chambers on drums, Andy Hobson on bass, and Adam Seymour on guitar. Hobson is replaced on bass by session musicians on a few cuts. The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in March 1978. The original band consisted of founder and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion). Following the drug-related deaths of Honeyman-Scott and Farndon, the band experienced numerous subsequent personnel changes. Hynde has been the band’s only consistent member. The Pretenders’ hit songs include “Brass in Pocket” (1979), “Talk of the Town” (1980), “Message of Love” (1981), “Back on the Chain Gang” (1982), “Middle of the Road” (1983), “2000 Miles” (1983), “Don’t Get Me Wrong” (1986), “My Baby” (1986), and “I’ll Stand by You” (1994). The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.]

21. Art d’Ecco —“The Hunted”
rom: Trespasser / Paper Bag / October 12, 2018

Doby Watson was born in 1986. Instead of attending college, as Richard Gintowt wrote for The Pitch in 2009, “Watson spent his young-adult years touring the country with a guitar and a box of Cliff Bars, one for breakfast, one for lunch, then a real meal for dinner, and a bunch of sad and beautiful homespun songs that are as sparse and haunting as those of Leonard Cohen or Jason Molina.”

Doby is playing electric guitar with a full band; longtime tour-mate Ada Brumback and new drummer Nick Robertson (from the Creepy Jingles).

11:46 – More Interview with Doby Watson

We are talking with Singer-Songwriter Doby Watson who will be opening for Saintseneca on Sunday, March 1, at 7:30 PM, at The Riot Room, 4048 Broadway, KCMO.

Doby Watson, Thanks for being with us on WMM.

From Doby’s own words: “When I was a kid I played guitar in some hardcore bands. When I found myself without a band, at the end of high school, I started trying to sing and write songs. Falling on the moniker “Boo Hiss” (something a class mate of mine said in place of swear words). I put some songs online and got asked to be on a small DIY label from Ohio called Tract Records. Around that time, I befriended touring DIY artists’ such as Viking Moses, Real Live Tigers, Manipulator Alligator and a young man named Joseph Murphy (who was in tons of bands), as well. Through these connections I was encouraged to tour and became involved in the Midwest’s various DIY communities, making countless friends.”

“Rather than go to college, I chose to focus solely on DIY touring and releasing music (for much of it taking my good friend, then KC native, and amazing songwriter, Austin Swearengin with me for most of these tours). ”

“Around that same time, I made an attempt to be taken more “seriously”, dropped my moniker and unsuccessfully released a mini-album under my own name. After some rather chaotic and unorganized tours for the album, I became depressed and disillusioned with music. I set music aside as a priority, moved to Lawrence, KS and tried to assimilate to what I thought was a ‘normal’ life. ”

“I went to college, got a day job, and wound up generally hating life. This new ‘normal’ path inevitably didn’t work out for me – I moved back in with my parents and held various dead end jobs and sank deeper into a depression, completely ceasing to make any music.”

“I performed the songs live, while being recorded, in Ross Brown’s basement in Kansas City, MO. The next day, also in Brown’s basement, Grant Buell (Rhodes), Jerad Tomasino (vocals) and Hannah Jensen (viola), having never practiced with each other or Watson, improvised their parts over the live recordings of Watson. Richard Gintowt added additional vocals at his home in San Francisco, CA. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings and auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. The results were mastered by Cory Schulz in MIlwaukee, WI.”

13. Field Music – “Money Is a Memory”
from: Making a New World / Memphis Industries / January 10, 2020
[Field Music are an English rock band from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, that formed in 2004, particularly active in the Wearside region. The band’s core consists of brothers David Brewis & Peter Brewis, with Andrew Moore occasionally featured as keyboardist. Their line-up has at times featured members of both Maxïmo Park and The Futureheads. Field Music have been called one of the few bands to outlast the indie guitar band explosion of the mid-2000s. Describing the band as “a truly artful proposition in the pseudo-filled landscape of contemporary Brit art-rock,” music blog The Fantastic Hope puts this down in part to their “un-self-conscious anti-fashion stance,” arguing that Field Music’s “wayward pop from the fringes of academia is one of the most worthwhile ways in which rock//indie/guitar music/white pop/whatever might evolve”. Critics have compared their music to acts as diverse as Steely Dan, XTC, Prefab Sprout, Peter Gabriel, Scritti Politti, Talking Heads and Todd Rundgren. They have also been nominated for the Mercury Prize. The songs on Making a New World were inspired by research David and Peter Brewis conducted about stories, events, and technological advances that occurred during and after World War I as part their project for the Imperial War Museum. The songs from Making a New World will cover a wide variety of topics, including gender reassignment and air traffic control. One of the songs was inspired by Harold Gillies, a New Zealand-born surgeon who pioneered facial cosmetic surgery and skin grafts for injured servicemen and who later conducted one of the first gender realignment operations. The song “Only in a Man’s World” is about the development of sanitary napkins and the fact that advertising for the products, created by men, often treat the concept of menstruation like something shameful that should be kept secret. The song was inspired by a Wisconsin-based company called Kimberly-Clark that developed a material for dressing war wounds and was later adapted for the first modern sanitary product, which was called Kotex. David Brewis said he felt some embarrassment writing a song about the topic, particularly when he first shared it with his wife, but he believed “confronting my own embarrassment is a pretty fundamental part of what the song is about”. He further said of the song: “I found myself researching the development of sanitary pads – not a statement I’ve ever imagined myself making – and was surprised at how little the advertising material has changed in a hundred years. It’s still, Hey Ladies! Let’s not mention it too loudly but here is the perfect product to keep you feeling normal WHILE THE DISGUSTING, DIRTY THING HAPPENS. And you realise that it’s a kind of madness that a monthly occurrence for billions of women – something absolutely necessary for the survival of humanity – is seen as shameful or dirty – and is taxed MORE than razor blades?! ”The song “Money Is a Memory” concerns the final payment by Germany in 2010 of the economically ruinous reparations it owed under the Treaty of Versailles, and is written from the perspective of a functionary in the Treasury. In social media postings leading up to the release, David Brewis mentioned the famous image of a man carrying a wheelbarrow full of marks made worthless by the hyper-inflationary policies of the Weimar Republic as an inspiration for the track. Brewis: “The whole album is really about consequences, and how the consequences of that war are still with us. “Money Is A Memory” is probably the most explicit example of that — decisions that were made a hundred years ago still casting a shadow. The initial premise is a bit comical — the admin assistant going through their bureaucratic duties — but buried away inside those papers you can imagine the echoes of millions of lives being turned upside down.]

14. Les Amazones d’Afrique – “Love (feat. Mamani Keita)”
from: Amazones Power / Real World Records / January 24, 2020
[2nd album from Les Amazones d’Afrique, a contemporary world music supergroup formed in Mali in 2015 featuring Kandia Kouyaté, Angélique Kidjo, Mamani Keita, Rokia Koné, Mariam Doumbia (of Amadou & Mariam), Nneka, Mariam Koné, Massan Coulibaly, Madina N’Diaye, Madiaré Dramé, Mouneissa Tandina and Pamela Badjogo. The name of the refers to the Dahomey Amazons, which was a female elephant hunting group and a military regiment from the 17th century thru 19th century in what is now Benin. Les Amazones d’Afrique performed their first concert at Fiesta des Suds in Marseilles in October 2015. The 1st track they released was “I Play The Kora,” a track that goes well beyond the often-reductive term of “world music”. Its message is to encourage women coming together to sing about why they should “rise up and fight injustice because we’re all equal,” and profits from the sale of the track are be donated to The Panzi Foundation, led by Doctor Mukwege in Bukavu (DRC), which has provided healing support to more than 80,000 women, nearly 50,000 of whom are victims of sexualized violence and female genital mutilation. The kora, a harp-like instrument native to West Africa, works as a metaphor: playing the kora was denied to women for years; only men were allowed the prestige. Following their first UK performance at WOMAD Charlton Park in July 2016, Les Amazones d’Afrique were signed to Real World Records for the release of their 1st album, Republique Amazone (2017). Real World Records is a British record label specializing in world music. It was founded in 1989 by English musician Peter Gabriel and original members of WOMAD. In 1999, the label had sold over 3 million records worldwide & released 90 albums. In 2015, it had reached the mark of over 200 albums.]

15. Hailu Mergia & The Walias – “Tche Belew”
from: Tche Belew / Awesome Tapes From Africa / October 10, 2014
[Awesome Tapes From Africa is a record label & web site operated by Brian Shimkovitz based in Los Angeles, CA. Founded in 2006 in Brooklyn, New York, the site was created as a way for Shimkovitz to share music he had come across while on a Fulbright scholarship in Ghana. He was interested in the variety of genres and artists he found, distributed largely on cassette tapes at markets, but that he had not come across outside West Africa. In 2011, Shimkovitz transitioned the site from just a blog with posted recordings of collected tapes posted without the artists’ permission to a commercial record label. The goal of the company is to seed and expand an audience for the artists presented as well as provide opportunities to sell albums and tour. Artists are paid every six months and receive 50% of the profits from an album. Tapes presented on Awesome Tapes come from a variety of sources: gathered in Ghanaian street markets, purchased in stores in the US, or sent by others over the internet.[5] In addition to the website, Shimkovitz DJ’s concerts, clubs and at festivals as Awesome Tapes From Africa, as well as hosts a show on Dublab. Most Awesome Tapes From Africa releases are official rereleases of out-of-print cassettes from African musicians and bands. SK Kakraba’s Songs of Paapieye is the first album to consist of a new release. Although music is distributed in Africa via MP3 on mobile phones, Shimkovitz says the widest variety of music in West Africa is still available on cassette tape. In the journal Public Culture, Awesome Tapes From Africa, along with record labels Sublime Frequencies and Parallel World, is discussed as being emblematic of “World Music 2.0” for combining the “open source ethics of online networks with long-standing countercultural networks of circulation” within cassette culture and music distribution in developing nations. Walias Band were an Ethiopian jazz and funk band active from the early 1970s until the early 1990s. Formed by members of the Venus Band, Walias backed up many prominent singers with a hard polyrhythmic funk sound influenced by western artists like King Curtis, Junior Walker and Maceo Parker. In 1977 they recorded one of the few albums of Ethiopian instrumental music in collaboration with vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke, whose role as a bandleader and composer was also a major influence on Ethiopian popular music. Walias formed in the early 1970s in Addis Ababa where they were the house band for the upscale Hilton Hotel. A civilian curfew made it dangerous for clientele visiting the hotel lounge to leave after 11:00 PM, and Walias would end up playing two or three sets until 6:00 AM the next day. In 1981 Walias became the first modern Ethiopian band to travel to the United States, playing on a tour with singer Mahmoud Ahmed primarily to audiences of Ethiopian refugees. Rather than returning to Ethiopia under its dictatorship, four members of Walias—Girma Bèyènè, Mogès Habté, Mèlakè Gèbrè and Hailu Mergia—stayed in the U.S. and formed a new group called Zula Band. Mergia took work in Washington DC driving a taxi cab, often practicing in his cab while waiting for fares at the airport, and released solo cassette tapes of traditional Ethiopian music played on analog synthesizer, electric piano and accordion. Meanwhile the members of Walias who returned to Ethiopia—Yohannes Tèkola and Tèmarè Harègou—continued to play together under the Derg dictatorship for another decade. In the late 1990s Walias Band found a wider audience in the West when the French label Buda Records reissued much of the group’s music on the Ethiopiques series of compact discs. Their instrumental track, “Musicawi Silt,” became a popular dance number and has been covered by a number of artists. Not much else of Walias’ music was known until African music cassette collector Brian Shimkovitz found a Walias Band tape while traveling in Ethiopia. After hearing it, Shimkovitz found keyboardist Hailu Mergia’s phone number on the Internet, called him up, and arranged an official re-release of Walias Band’s music.]

17. Ebony Tusks – “HDF”
from: HDF – Single / High Dive Records / January 17, 2020
[Ebony Tusks is Daniel Smith on DJ & Production, Geese Giesecke on vocals & Production, and Marty Hillard on vocals & Production. A rattling subwoofer is a sonic aberration, a byproduct of high volume that often results in a speaker system’s long-term damage. It takes the listening experience from exclusively aural to physical, evoking a range of reactions from listeners. This experience is bonded inextricably with rap music for both its fans and dissenters, a familiar beacon for some and an unwelcome nuisance for others. Marty was a cashier at Burger King while in high school, spending every Saturday morning working the drive-thru window. One of his best friends pulled up to the menu and filled the speaker with sounds from his 1972 Volkswagen Beetle’s cassette adapter. Marty’s headset was filled with hot, white noise. He knew it was a rap song but it was mutated to scorched earth. It also happened to come through the main speaker right inside the drive-thru window. His manager was not at all pleased, rushing quickly to turn it off. Marty and his friend laughed it off at the time. EBONY TUSKS is a compilation of moments like these. Daniel, Geese, & Marty are 3 people from the Midwest who take pleasure in the mutations of sound available in the least expected places.]

Daniel Smith, Nathan “Geese” Giesecke, Martinez Hillard thanks for being with us on WMM.

Their upcoming album, Heal Thyself will be released soon on High Dive Records on vinyl and Intelligent Sound on cassette.

From Live From The Underground / Vivid Seats recently wrote in a piece published February 7, 2020, saying: “EBONY TUSKS is dynamic underground hip-hop trio focused on the conscious, lyric-heavy side of the genre, EBONY TUSKS appeared with dozens of leading underground acts throughout the 2010s. Now, they’re ready to take the next step.”

Martinez Hillard told Vivid Seats: “I began EBONY TUSKS in 2009 after a difficult period that summer. I was living in the student ghetto near the University of Kansas in Lawrence. It was an eerily calm Friday night and I didn’t have any plans after work so I crashed. I woke up shortly after 9:00 pm because my door was being kicked in. I was beaten and robbed at gunpoint. Thankfully, two of my neighbors were close friends and called the police immediately. I had nightmares for years afterward that included many symbols I’ve come to associate with various religious practices. I also began writing raps for the first time in over a decade. I was working with a couple producers and we had our first show at a house venue called Pizza Power in October 2010. Both Daniel and Geese came into the fold within a couple years of that show.”

Martinez Hillard, Daniel Miller, and Nathan “Geese” Giesecke of EBONY TUSKS on the February 19, 2020 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Daniel Smith lives in Lawrence, Kansas. He was born in Berkeley California. He moved to Lawrence when he was a child. Hs father is a Professor at The University of Kansas. Daniel is a DJ and producer. He makes beats. Daniel works for the United Way of Douglass County. Daniel helps to provide after school job-training programs for under-served youth.

Nathan “Geese” Giesecke grew up in Olathe but now lives and works in Kansas City, MO. He was friends with Calvin Arsenia in High School. Geese works as a producer as GEESACE. He makes beats and you can find his music at http://soundcloud.com/geesace Nathan is also a lighting designer who jumped on stage to do back up vocals for Marty and ended up being in the band.

Martinez Hillard is the main vocalist and lyricist for EBONY TUSKS. He raps under the moniker Bodye, (pronounced “body”). He also produces beats. Martinez lives in the Old Town neighborhood in downtown Topeka with wife and 5 year old daughter. Martinez was part of the super group Cowboy Indian Bear. Martinez was recently elected to serve as a board member for Friends of the Library for Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

At Marty told Johnson County Library, in a piece published April 27, 2016: “ It was a project I started with other producers back in 2010. I asked Daniel to DJ for me sometime in 2011-2012 and Geese joined not too far behind him. Daniel and I had become fast friends when I lived in Lawrence and he was the nicest, most easygoing DJ of the handful I knew. He made our shows a lot less stressful. Geese was and is a lighting technician for a number of our friends’ projects and that was how I made acquaintance with him, seeing him work for a band and asking if he’d do lights for an EBONY TUSKS concert. He eventually asked if he could be hypeman for us and he brought an intensity that we didn’t have prior.”

EBONY TUSKS have been a band for over 11 years making hip hop in the Lawrence scene that includes Approach, Stik Figa, Heartfelt Anarchy, and Archetype.

Since the three members of EBONY TUSKS live in three separate cities: Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka early on, they created a Dropbox folder to share demos with one another. And as they told Vivid Seat: “It also gave us a bit of language to use in building sounds independent of one another.”

The Pedaljets!!!
+ New & MidCoastal Releases
+ Betse Ellis & Marion Merritt

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Katy Guillen & The Drive – “Willingly”
from: Dream Girl [EP] / Katy Guillen / to be released on: March 20, 2020
[New 7 song EP from Katy Guillen & The Drive, the latest project dedicated to Guillen’s songwriting that is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen & Stephanie Williams. With Guillen on guitar & vocals and Williams on drums, the two sculpt a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums: Katy Guillen & the Girls, Heavy Days, and Remember What You Knew Before. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. In these 6 years playing together, Guillen & Williams created a dynamic, sound informed by Guillen’s mesmerizing, emotive guitar style and poignant arrangements, and an equally captivating live show that showcased Williams’ technical, melodic style, resulting in a powerful on-stage chemistry. In addition to the compelling synergy formed by years of playing together, the two developed a method of working together on Guillen’s songs that only deepened their artistic connection, propelling them to forge a path to a new plateau in their music. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of the artist’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Guillen calls their genre-bending style “indie soul-rock.”]

[Katy Guillen & The Drive play Feb 14 in St Petersburg, FL; Feb 15 in Tampa, FL; Feb 16 in Goodland, FL; Feb 18 – 22 for Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea VI. Katy Guillen will be on WMM on March 18.]

6. Nan Turner – “Double Heartbreak”
from: For Champs and Losers, Version 2 / Nan Turner / July 12, 2019
[All songs by Nan Turner. Recorded, Mixed, and Co-Produced at Winky World in KC, by Chase Horseman. Mastered by Alan Douches at West Side Music, New Windsor, NY. Ian Dobyns plays drums and Chase Horseman plays bass. Nan Turner is one half of the critically acclaimed band Schwervon! Nan has been called the “Lucy Ricardo of Indie Rock.” She also performs as Nan & The One Night Stands. Nan wrote on Facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. My guitar and I got reacquainted. We were “dancing in the dark.” I’ve never quoted Bruce Springsteen before, but also I didn’t know I was going to record this EP, so you know. I had the luxury of working with Chase Horseman every week or two, giving myself time to add and rework stuff. I took the slow road and enjoyed the process. Chase has great ears and is ubertalented in his own right. He & Ian Dobyns (Dreamgirl, Chase The Horseman) were my rhythm section on a few of these tracks.” More info at: http://www.nanturner.bandcamp.com]

[Nan Turner’s band: Nan & the One Nite Stands play Records with Merritt, 1614 Westport Rd, KCMO, Saturday, February 15, at 8:00 PM with Charlie Upchurch (comedy), Causing FX (Daniel Robinson, formerly Los Cauz), and Breaka Dawn (of The Bad Ideas).]

10:36 – Pledge Break #3

Just remember what you don’t have to hear when you are tuned to 90.1 FM KKFI! No commercials, no automated robot playing the same 40 to 100 songs in a “rotation,” based on a formula, created by someone who programs the robot. KKFI is the opposite of a robot. There is always a human being on the other end of the phone line anytime you call. We are “The Voice of The Community” – 90.1 offers 102 different radio programs. 84 of these programs are locally created and produced and hosted and engineered and written by over 100 different people, who create content, and personally handcraft each show, each week. There are 147 hours each week of locally produced handcrafted programs. You will not find this kind of representative diversity anywhere else on your radio dial, or from any singular source on your computer. It is very special. It needs to be nourished and kept alive in a world of corporate, nationally owned, commercial or religious broadcasting.

7. The Roseline – “Better to the Bone”
from: GOOD / GRIEF / King Forward Records / to be released April 3, 2020
[From the 6th album of the Lawrence, KS, based alt-country, Americana, rock band, formed by Colin Halliburton with friends in 2005. The songs were born, largely, in response to the death of Halliburton’s best friend (and keyboardist in The Roseline), as well as the loss of his mother-in-law to suicide. Additionally, the album explores themes of love & marriage, the grieving process, elder millennial existential dread, politicized rage, drugs, and mortality. Beyond simply the lyrics, they have added sonic textures that have not previously been explored, thanks to the addition of guitarist Bradley McKellip, bassist Colin Jones, and keyboardist and vocalist Heidi Gluck. Drummer Jim Piller and guitarist Kris Losure have returned as solid mainstays of the band. Guest appearances from lap steel player Mike Stover, pianist Dan Loftus, and vocalist Chase Horseman widen the sonic spectrum even further. The album was recorded, engineered and produced by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios in KCMO. The new album follows the September 29, 2017 release “Blood,” and the June 19, 2015 album, “Townie.” The band has toured the US and Halliburton has completed two European solo tours thus far, taking him through Poland, Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands. More info at; http://www.roselinemusic.com.]

[The Roseline play an Album Release show at Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Friday, April 3 at 9:00 PM]

[The Roseline play a Kansas City Album Release show at Mike Kelly’s Westsider, Saturday, April 4.]

10. Pedaljets – “Disassociation Blues”
from: Twist The Lens / Electric Moth Records / February 14, 2020
[Twist The Lens was recorded in three main sessions, produced by the Pedaljets alongside their former lead guitarist Paul Malinowski (Shiner, Season To Risk). Though the Pedaljets core trio of Allmayer, bassist Matt Kesler, and drummer Rob Morrow has remained a constant throughout their tenure as a band, they’ve worked with multiple lead guitarists throughout the years, with Twist The Lens being the first record to showcase their newest addition, Cody Wyoming. Bringing in Wyoming, and working alongside Malinowski, allowed the new songs to benefit from a fresh and outside perspective, while still keeping the album within the Pedaljets family. It also lent itself to a more utilitarian process where, as Allmayer describes, “We would constantly listen back and ask ourselves, ‘Are you hearing something this song needs?’ We were really focused on pushing ourselves to make the best music we can and being extra critical.” To round out the team, the band brought in veteran producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) to mix the record and reunited with Archer Prewitt (The Sea and Cake) whose artwork has adorned the last three Pedaljets album covers.]

The Pedaljets join us live in our 90.1 FM Studios to talk with us about their new album, “Twist The Lens,” be released Feb. 14, on Electric Moth Records. Formed in 1984, The Pedaljets made their name playing alongside Hüsker Dü, The Replacements and Flaming Lips. In 1989 the band broke up just after the release of their second album, “The Pedaljets.” 20 years later, the band came back together in 2008, to give that album a proper, remastered release. Working with producer Paul Malinowski playing lead guitar, the band’s reunion led to “What’s In Between” in 2013, the band’s first album of new material in 23 years. Now six years later, “Twist The Lens” their fourth full-length, is the first to feature new guitarist Cody Wyoming (The Philistines), while previous guitarist Paul Malinowski served as producer.

Mike Allmayer, Matt Kesler, & Cody Wyoming thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Studio legend John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile) mixed the album, and Archer Prewitt (The Sea And Cake and The Cocktails) provided the artwork.

Once hailed as “Kansas City’s answer to The Replacements,” the Pedaljets formed in the mid-80s and immediately began touring the United States nonstop, gaining critical acclaim and support slots with some of the decade’s biggest acts, but never becoming a household name on their own.

After releasing two LPs, 1988’s “Today Today” and 1989’s “Pedaljets,” the band split up.

After laying low for a few years, Allmayer and Morrow formed the band Grither and signed with MCA before Morrow decided to go back to school and relocate to Scotland.

Kesler owned and operated the KC vintage music shop Midwestern Musical Company, selling gear to artists including St. Vincent, The Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell and more.

The Pedaljets couldn’t stay apart forever though, and returned in 2008 with a re-recorded version of their self-titled album and a rekindled hunger to perform..

20 years later, the band came back together in 2008, to give that album a proper, remastered release. Working with producer Paul Malinowski playing lead guitar, the band’s reunion led to “What’s In Between” in 2013, the band’s first album of new material in 23 years.

6 years later, “Twist The Lens” their 4th full-length, is the first to feature new guitarist Cody Wyoming (The Philistines), while previous guitarist Paul Malinowski served as producer.

11:47 – Pledge Break #6

I love that I can tune into the 90.1 FM’s 100,000 watt, crystal-clear signal, and hear the music, information, news, entertainment, events, and stories, that I cannot find anywhere else. 90.1 is my comfort, my special companion, my interesting friend, introducing me to all kinds of new & local music, as well as the news & information without commercials. It is radio brought to YOU by people who create radio shows out of love, and are guided by KKFI’s noble mission that “seeks to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals and groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.”

Driving in your car, at the office, at the gym, in your garage, in your cubicle, in your art space, on your iPod, at your construction site, in your kitchen, in your barn, YOU can take 90.1 with you, as your companion. 90.1 FM is generally a good date. Good for a few laughs, fun to dance with, always interested in good conversation. Isn’t 90.1 FM KKFI worth a few dollars a day, or a week? So many people tune in to http://www.kkfi.org everyday, but studies show, that less than 1 percent actually donate to keep this miracle of broadcasting alive. Please help keep this part of our public airwaves alive for our community to enjoy, free from commercials, free from religious sermonizing, free from extremely conservative and slanted right wing “talk radio,” and free from corporately “owned and cloned” robotic affiliates that play the same 15 songs everyday at the same time. YOU deserve better. http://www.kkfi.org – Become a sustaining member!

Marion Merritt, Betse Ellis, Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who called in!

15. Gang of Four – “Natural’s Not In It”
from: Entertainment / EMI – Warner Brothers / September 25, 1979
[Debut album from Gang of Four, an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Leeds. The original members were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. There have been many different line-ups including, among other notable musicians, Sara Lee, Mark Heaney and Gail Ann Dorsey. After a brief lull in the 1980s, different constellations of the band recorded two studio albums in the 1990s. Between 2004 and 2006 the original line-up was reunited; Gill was the only remaining original member prior to his death on 1 February 2020. The band plays a stripped-down mix of punk rock, funk and dub, with a lyrical emphasis on the social and political ills of society. Gang of Four are widely considered one of the leading bands of the late 1970s/early 1980s post-punk movement. Their debut album, Entertainment!, was ranked as fifth greatest punk album of all time and at Number 483 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album was listed by Pitchfork Media as the 8th best album of the 1970s. Their early 80s albums (Songs of the Free and Hard) found them softening some of their more jarring qualities, and drifting towards dance-punk and disco. David Fricke of Rolling Stone described Gang of Four as “probably the best politically motivated band in rock & roll.” In 2011 we played from “Content” Gang Of Four’s 7th full-length album released January 25, 2011 on Yep Roc and their first studio record in 16 years from the punk-funk, post-punk agitators, formed in 1977. They went on to release more: What Happens Next (Metropolis/Membran, 2015) and Happy Now (Gill Music Ltd, 2019).] [Andrew James Dalrymple Gill was born January 1, 1956 and died February 1, 2020. He was a British musician and record producer. He was the lead guitarist for the British rock band Gang of Four, which he co-founded in 1976. Gill was known for his jagged style of guitar on albums such as Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981) and hit singles such as “At Home He’s a Tourist,” “Damaged Goods,” “Anthrax,” “What We All Want” and “I Love a Man in a Uniform”. In addition to his work with Gang of Four, Gill was also a record producer, and produced or co-produced all of the band’s albums. He also produced albums for artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Jesus Lizard, the Stranglers, the Futureheads, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, Polysics, Fight Like Apes, Therapy? and the Young Knives. Gill was born in Manchester, England, UK, on 1 January 1956. Gill was married to Catherine Mayer, a journalist and the co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party. Gill was often confused with The Independent’s music critic, also named Andy Gill. Gill’s death was announced by Gang of Four on February 1, 2020. He was 64. A band’s spokesperson told the New York Times the cause of death was pneumonia.]
