[WMM’s Adopted Theme Song]

2. Billy Porter – “For What It’s Worth”
from: “For What It’s Worth” – Single / Billy Porter / April 24, 2020
[Billy Porter was born September 21, 1969 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is an American Broadway theater performer, singer, & actor. He attended the Musical Theater program at Pittsburgh Creative & Performing Arts School’s School of Drama, graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, and achieved fame performing on Broadway before starting a solo career as a singer and actor. Porter won the 2013 Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Lola in Kinky Boots at the 67th Tony Awards. He credits the part for “cracking open” his feminine side to confront toxic masculinity. For the role, Porter also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. In 2014 Porter won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for Kinky Boots. He currently stars in the television series Pose for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and won the 2019 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first openly gay black man to be nominated and win in any lead acting category at the Primetime Emmys.] [For What It’s Worth was written by Stephen Stills. Performed by Buffalo Springfield, recorded on December 5, 1966, and released as a single on ATCO Records on December 23, 1966; and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1967. It was later added to the March 1967 second pressing of their first album, Buffalo Springfield. The title was added after the song was written, and does not appear in the lyrics. Although “For What It’s Worth” is often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in November 1966—a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, beginning in mid-1966, the same year Buffalo Springfield had become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip. Local residents and businesses had become annoyed by how crowds of young people going to clubs and music venues along the Strip had caused late-night traffic congestion. In response, they lobbied the city to pass local ordinances stopping loitering, and enforced a strict curfew on the Strip after 10 p.m. The young music fans, however, felt the new laws infringed upon their civil rights. On Saturday, November 12, 1966, fliers were distributed on the Sunset Strip inviting people to join demonstrations later that day. Several of LA’s rock radio stations also announced a rally outside the Pandora’s Box club on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights. That evening, as many as 1,000 young demonstrators, including future celebrities such as Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda (who was handcuffed by police) gathered to protest against the curfew’s enforcement. Although the rallies began peacefully, trouble eventually broke out. The unrest continued the next night, and periodically throughout the rest of November and December, forcing some clubs to shut down It was against the background of these civil disturbances that Stills recorded “For What It’s Worth”]

6. Quiet Takes – “Wanted (The Dirty Windshield Version)”
from: “Wanted (Dirty Windshield Version)” – Single / Sarah Magill / May 1, 2020
[“Wanted” lives in the ellipses between acknowledging you want something you can’t have…and letting that desire go. The plan was to put this stripped-down version out in the fall after releasing its more produced twin on an EP this summer, but then everything changed. Beyond the pandemic’s catastrophic casualties, we are all grappling with lesser losses: plans, jobs, dreams, relationships, routines, shows, savings, physical touch. It seemed right to put this version out now. Sometimes we only realize what we want when it’s absent. That’s the gift in the grief, but it stings, doesn’t it? Music & Lyrics by Sarah Magill. Produced by David Bennett. Vocals & keyboards by Sarah Magill, guitars, & bass by David Bennett. Additional key by Ian Thompson. Engineered & mixed by David Bennett at Aorist Studios in Kansas City, Missouri. Mastered by Zach Hanson Quiet Takes (formerly MYRY) is an on-going collaborative music project by Sarah Magill a writer and musician based in Kansas City, Missouri. She performs with a rotating cast of friends—although these stay-at-home days, she is playing solo. In Kansas City, she is known for hosting house shows and co-founding Rubix, a performance art collective. The first EP, MYRY’s AHEM. Was release in 2018. Quiet Takes has new music coming in 2020.]

[Sarah Magill will be on WMM on May 13.]

7. Lido Pimienta – “Te Quería”
from: Miss Colombia / Anti / April 17, 2020
[Lido Pimienta was born in 1986. Originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, she later immigrated to Canada, settling in London, Ontario, before moving to Toronto, where she is currently based. Her father died when she was six years old. She rose to prominence after her 2016 album, La Papessa, won the $50,000 2017 Polaris Music Prize. Her music incorporates a variety of styles and influences, including traditional indigenous and Afro-Colombian musical styles, as well as contemporary synth pop and electronic music. Pimienta released her debut album, Color, in 2010. The album was produced by Michael Ramey, Pimienta’s husband at the time, and was released by Los Angeles based music label KUDETA. After Pimienta and Ramey separated, Pimienta took time to pursue a degree in art criticism, in addition to learning more about music production, before releasing her second album, La Papessa, in 2016. That year, she also collaborated with A Tribe Called Red on several tracks for their 2016 album We Are the Halluci Nation. Following the release of her experimental album La Papessa, which was self-produced by Pimienta, she was awarded the $50,000 2017 Polaris Music Prize, which is considered Canada’s top juried music award. The Globe and Mail called her “the future of Canadian rock and roll”, and dubbed her the “artist of the year”. During her performance at the Halifax Pop Explosion music festival on October 19, 2017, Pimienta, as she often does during her concerts, invited the “brown girls [in the audience] to [come] the front”. According to a statement that was subsequently released by the festival, “the incident involved a white volunteer photographer and several white audience members who reacted negatively” to Pimienta’s request. When the photographer refused to move after ten separate requests, Pimienta said, “you’re cutting into my set time and you’re disrespecting these women, and I don’t have time for this”. The volunteer was removed from the show and the festival organizers later apologized to Pimienta, and said they would increase “anti-oppression and anti-racism training”. In addition to working as a musician, Pimienta is also a visual artist & curator, and her work has been described as exploring “the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American”; her work was exhibited in the group exhibition FEMINISTRY IS HERE at Mercer Union gallery in Toronto. Pimienta identifies as queer. She is of mixed Afro-Colombian & Wayuu descent. She is a single mother.]

8. Ebony Tusks – “HDF”
from: HDF – Single / High Dive Records / February 7, 2020
[Ebony Tusks is Daniel Smith on DJ & Production, Geese Giesecke on vocals & Production, and Marty Hillard on vocals & Production. A rattling subwoofer is a sonic aberration, a byproduct of high volume that often results in a speaker system’s long-term damage. It takes the listening experience from exclusively aural to physical, evoking a range of reactions from listeners. This experience is bonded inextricably with rap music for both its fans and dissenters, a familiar beacon for some and an unwelcome nuisance for others. Marty was a cashier at Burger King while in high school, spending every Saturday morning working the drive-thru window. One of his best friends pulled up to the menu and filled the speaker with sounds from his 1972 Volkswagen Beetle’s cassette adapter. Marty’s headset was filled with hot, white noise. He knew it was a rap song but it was mutated to scorched earth. It also happened to come through the main speaker right inside the drive-thru window. His manager was not at all pleased, rushing quickly to turn it off. Marty and his friend laughed it off at the time. EBONY TUSKS is a compilation of moments like these. Daniel, Geese, & Marty are 3 people from the Midwest who take pleasure in the mutations of sound available in the least expected places.]

Chase released the single “U Martyr U” on June 19, 2018, and the single “Modern Ruins” on Oct 4, 2018.

Chase The Horseman – the band includes: Ian Dobyns on drums, Ada Brumback – on guitar and keyboards, Skylar Cowdry on bass

Chase Horseman spends half of his time creating soundtracks for feature films, documentaries, and television dramas. When he is not composing films he works as a singer-songwriter, band leader, musical collaborator and producer.

Recently Chase created the music for two feature-length episodes of the Blum House Films and Hulu original series, “Into the Dark.”

Chase The Horseman

Horseman’s latest release is inspired by film and is a quarantine cover of “Midnight, The Stars and You” a song written by Harry M. Woods, Jimmy Campbell & Reg Connelly Stanley. The most famous version was recorded in 1934 by Ray Noble & his Orchestra with an uncredited Al Bowlly on vocals. This was used in the ballroom scene and closing of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film The Shining based on the novel by Stephen King.

Horseman keeps the ‘30s-style foxtrot, adding his own layers of synthesizer sounds.

Chase told Michelle Bacon for 909 The Bridge.org: “I’ve been obsessed with ‘The Shining’ since I saw it in high school — the cinematography, the art design, the score — all of it just stuck in my head, but no piece more than that haunting tune.”

Horseman said. “Being stuck in isolation and losing your mind is extremely relatable right now, so I figured, why not cover this amazing song from arguably one of the best isolation films ever made? With no shows to play or nightlife to live, I lovingly put together this tribute to a favorite film of mine in its 40th anniversary year.”

With the release of this track, Horseman is benefiting two of KC’s working communities. All the profits will be evenly split between Midwest Music Foundation — a nonprofit organization that gives emergency grants to KC music professionals — and the city’s service industry workers.

11. Katy Guillen & The Drive – “Other Side”
from: Dream Girl [EP] / Katy Guillen / March 20, 2020
[New 7 song EP from Katy Guillen & The Drive, the latest project dedicated to Guillen’s songwriting that is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen & Stephanie Williams. With Guillen on guitar & vocals and Williams on drums, the two sculpt a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums: Katy Guillen & the Girls, Heavy Days, and Remember What You Knew Before. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. In these 6 years playing together, Guillen & Williams created a dynamic, sound informed by Guillen’s mesmerizing, emotive guitar style and poignant arrangements, and an equally captivating live show that showcased Williams’ technical, melodic style, resulting in a powerful on-stage chemistry. In addition to the compelling synergy formed by years of playing together, the two developed a method of working together on Guillen’s songs that only deepened their artistic connection, propelling them to forge a path to a new plateau in their music. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of the artist’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Guillen calls their genre-bending style “indie soul-rock.”]

Mike McCoy

It has been written that about Mike McCoy that. “He’s a hayseed intellectual-philosopher whose compositions strike the right balance of plaintive and high-brow, sardonic and humble. McCoy brings a singular, poet’s sensibility to the music equation. He writes about a wonderful waitress in a rundown town who has the power to make or break your stay (“if you treat her well, you might get what you want…”), about an immigrant woman whose dreams of America lead her to a lonesome life as a domestic (“feather duster I believe her, no one sees the way I see her…”), about American apathy and how winter is a submarine (“winter is a submarine — I lay inside and I no longer dream…”). “

In most of McCoy’s songs, there is something deeply wistful, despite the freighted narratives and their dizzying wordplay.

He’s a serious guy and he writes about serious stuff. Yet in the lyrics and in the spaces between words and melody, you can almost hear that lone whistle blow in the dark of a heartlands night; you hear a style of writing that combines political commentary and snarky populism with an inextinguishable belief that somehow, with the right blend of gumption and fortitude, we humans might just pull off something good.

It’s been said that Mike McCoy is equal parts punk-rock-Americana, a strange brew of Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, John Mellencamp, Ramones & Burl Ives. But no matter in what incarnation you encounter Mike McCoy, you’ll find he’s driven by the same basic themes: ideas & ideals of humanity, principles & hopes, outrage & indignation, absurdism & dadaism, puns & poetry & parody, with a large dose of red-white-&-blue wishful thinking.

11:05 – Interview with David Burchfield

David Burchfield joins us from Salt Lake City to share music and details about his new album, “State To State” to be released June 5, 2020. State to State is filled with layers of guitar, upright piano, shuffling percussion, stately fiddle and the detail-rich lyrics of a troubadour who’s seen his share of these United States. David Burchfield presents Jammy Jams Streaming Live on Facebook every Monday Night at 9:00 PM (CST) Live from David’s house in Denver.

David Burchfield thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

“I’d made two previous albums right out of college, and then more or less quit to move to Colorado and become an elementary-school teacher,” David says. “I was in my second year of teaching when a truck hit me while driving my scooter home one night.” Rushed to the hospital, Burchfield awoke to find he’d escaped with only a broken nose and a concussion. Above all, he was left with a potent reminder of life’s brevity and a fresh sense of urgency. Once again, he picked up the guitar, and out poured “You’re OK, It’s Alright,” the first of the songs that now comprise State to State. http://www.davidburchfield.bandcamp.com

David Burchfield

“I learned a lot from that time,” Burchfield says of his unplugged nights in the Rocky Mountain backcountry. “I developed a deep love of traditional country and folk music, and it also taught me about connecting with an audience in the simplest, most direct way—no lights, no PA, and with just a few feet between us. That’s still my favorite way to perform. It’s all about connection.” State to State, his newest release, finds Burchfield traveling across the American heartland in search of stability and inspiration. Brimming with coastlines, highways, rolling plains, old hometowns and new destinations, the record evokes a vivid picture of a songwriter’s wandering. Along the way, State to State also shines a light on the people, places and near-death experiences that have shaped Burchfield’s music and outlook on life.

Recorded in American Fork, Utah, with Burchfield’s road band and producer Joshua James, State to State is filled with layers of guitar, upright piano, shuffling percussion, stately fiddle and the detail-rich lyrics of a troubadour who’s seen his share of these United States. On the softly spun “Dishes in the Sink,” Burchfield struggles to settle into an unfamiliar home, pedal steel swooning in the background, while the slow-motion swagger of “Ain’t Gonna Be Easy” finds him reflecting on relationships with his hometown friends over some understated brass and the steady chug of an electric guitar. As this 11-track journey plays out, Burchfield meanders from tender acoustic moments to lushly amplified highlights like the soulful stomp of “Feelin’ Pretty Alright,” a track that would be right at home on The Band’s proto-Americana gem Music From Big Pink. State to State reads like an Americana travelogue stocked with songs borne of a restless spirit and adventurous heart. David Burchfield has never sounded more at home.

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”

[WMM’s Adopted Theme Song]

2. THE VACANT LOTS – “RESCUE”
from: INTERZONE / Fuzz Club Records / June 26, 2020
[The Vacant Lots are Jerad Artaud & Brian MacFadyen. Music & lyrics by The Vacant Lots. Produced by The Vacant Lots. Recorded in Brooklyn, New York. Mixed & additional productions by Maurizio at La Distilleria Studio. Engineered by Ted Young. Mastered by Gianni Peri. More info: http://www.thevacantlots.com. Interzone is the third full-length album by New York’s electro post-punk duo The Vacant Lots. A genre-blending synthesis of dance and psych, Interzone is made for secluded listeners and all night partygoers, meant for headphones and the club. Uninhibited by the limitations of two people and continuing their mission of “minimal means maximum effect,” The Vacant Lots’ Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen create an industrial amalgam of icy electronics and cold beats with detached vocals and hard hitting guitars. Interzone’s trance-like opener ‘Endless Rain’ and the kinetic krautrock stomper ‘Into The Depths’ are followed by scintillating dark disco anthems ‘Rescue’ and ‘Exit’. Side 2 kicks off with 80’s synth-pop track ‘Fracture’ and haunting after-hours minimal wave ‘Payoff,’ while ‘Station’ and album closer ‘Party’s Over’ deal with disillusionment and conquering one’s indifference to make real change. The album creates order from chaos and delves into escapism, isolation, relationship conflicts, and decay. With nods to William S. Burroughs and Joy Division’s song of the same name, “Interzone is like existing between two zones,” Jared says. “Interzone doesn’t mean one thing. It can mean different things to different people depending on their interpretation. Working on this album was a constant struggle reconciling internal conflicts with all that’s going on externally in the world. Interzone in one word is duality.” “Jared and I bounced ideas back and forth while working in seclusion on opposite coasts. We would just send files to each other until the songs were arranged. Then we met up at the studio in Brooklyn where we were fortunate enough to borrow Alan Vega’s Arp synth and finished recording with engineer Ted Young. We then worked with Maurizio Baggio to mix it,” recalls Brian. After the band finished producing Interzone, long term visual collaborator Ivan Liechti designed the album artwork. The Vacant Lots have released singles with Mexican Summer and Reverberation Appreciation Society, collaborated on their debut album Departure with Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, their second album Endless Night with Alan Vega, and most recently on their two EPs, Berlin and Exit, with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe at his studio in Berlin. The group has toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Suicide, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Growlers, Dean Wareham, The Dandy Warhols, and Spectrum. Reflecting on the new album, Jared says, “We don’t want to waste people’s time and we want people to play it over and over. Our mantra is ‘is it bulletproof? It’s about intention and vision.” Interzone is a record made for these times.]

She aspires to inspire other artists to capitalize in their craft by not putting themselves in a box. “I’m an African American woman, but I refuse to allow anyone to use that against me. 9. The Magnetic Fields – “(I Want To Join a) Biker Gang”
from: Quickies / Nonesuch Records / May 15, 2020
[The Magnetic Fields’ Quickies vinyl box set is five 7” EPs comprising twenty-eight new short songs by Stephin Merritt, ranging in length from thirteen seconds to two minutes and thirty-five seconds, performed by Merritt and band members Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo, along with longtime friends and collaborators Chris Ewen, Daniel Handler, and Pinky Weitzman. he Magnetic Fields (named after the André Breton/Philippe Soupault novel Les Champs Magnétiques) are an American band founded and led by Stephin Merritt. Merritt is the group’s primary songwriter, producer, and vocalist, as well as frequent multi-instrumentalist. The Magnetic Fields is essentially a vehicle for Merritt’s songwriting, as are various side-projects including The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, and The Gothic Archies. Merritt’s recognizable lyrics are often about love and with atypical or neutral gender roles, and are by turns ironic, tongue-in-cheek, bitter, and humorous. The band released their debut single “100,000 Fireflies” in 1991. The single was typical of the band’s earlier career, characterized by synthesized instrumentation by Merritt, with lead vocals provided by Susan Anway (and then by Stephin Merritt himself from The House of Tomorrow (EP) onwards). A more traditional band later materialized; it is now composed of Merritt, Claudia Gonson, Sam Davol, and John Woo, with occasional guest vocals by Shirley Simms. The band’s best-known work is the 1999 three-volume concept album 69 Love Songs. It was followed in the succeeding years by a “no-synth” trilogy: i (2004), Distortion (2008), and Realism (2010). The band’s most recent album, 50 Song Memoir, was released in March 2017. The band began as Merritt’s studio project under the name Buffalo Rome. With the help of friend Claudia Gonson, who had played in Merritt’s band The Zinnias during high school, a live band was assembled in Boston, where Merritt and Gonson lived, to play Merritt’s compositions. The band’s first live performance was at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1991 where they played to a sparse audience that was expecting to see the Galaxie 500 spin-off, Magnetophone. The 1999 triple album 69 Love Songs showcased Merritt’s songwriting abilities and the group’s musicianship, demonstrated by the use of such varied instruments as the ukulele, banjo, accordion, cello, mandolin, flute, xylophone, and the Marxophone, in addition to their usual setting of synthesizers, guitars, and effects. The album features vocalists Shirley Simms, Dudley Klute, L.D. Beghtol, and Gonson, each of whom sings lead on six songs as well as various backing vocals, plus Daniel Handler (who has written under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket) on accordion, and longtime collaborator Christopher Ewen (of Future Bible Heroes) as guest arranger/synthesist. Violinist Ida Pearle makes a brief cameo on “Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side”. The band’s albums, i (2004) and Distortion (2008), both followed the album theme structure of 69 Love Songs: The song titles on i begin with the letter (or, in the case of half the songs’ titles, the pronoun) “I”, whilst Distortion was an experiment in combining noise music with their typically unconventional musical approach. The liner notes claim the album was made without synthesizers. According to an article: “To celebrate the release of Distortion, Merritt and The Magnetic Fields played mini-residencies in cities around the country, culminating with six shows at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music.” Realism was released in January 2010, concluding what Merritt termed the “no-synth” trilogy (following i and Distortion). The next album produced would feature synthesizers “almost exclusively”. In 2010, the documentary film Strange Powers: Stephen Merritt and the Magnetic Fields made its debut in film festivals around the world. It was directed by Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara. Shot over a period of 10 years, it discusses the formation of the band, Stephin’s friendship with Claudia Gonson, the production of various albums, and Stephin’s move to California from New York. It won the Outfest 2010 Grand Jury Prize for Feature Documentary. The band was chosen by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform a rare festival performance at the All Tomorrow’s Parties event that he curated in March 2012 in Minehead, England. The band released its tenth full-length album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, on March 6, 2012 to critical acclaim. This album, sometimes compared to 69 Love Songs, brought back the use of a synthesizer. Merritt told fans on his website, “I was very happy to be using synthesizers in ways that I had not done before. Most of the synthesizers on the record didn’t exist when we were last using synthesizers.” The song “Andrew in Drag” has garnered much attention, receiving play from entities such as CBS News and NPR’s All Songs Considered. In 2012, the Magnetic Fields celebrated its new album by launching a North American and European tour. It began on March 6, the release date of Love at the Bottom of the Sea, and continued for two months. In 2016 it was announced that the band’s eleventh studio album, 50 Song Memoir would contain fifty songs, akin to the 69 Love Songs concept, one to commemorate each year since Stephin Merritt was born. It was released in March 2017. On May 15th 2020, the band will release the album Quickies – twenty-eight songs under three minutes long through Nonesuch Records. The first single “The Day The Politicians Died” was released on February 25th, followed by “Kraftwerk In A Blackout” on April 1st and “I Want To Join A Biker Gang” on April 16th.]

Nicole Spinger

Nicole Springer lives in KC. Nicole Springer has a big amazing voice; once you hear it, you cannot ignore her voice. In the true courageous spirit of DIY, she started her first band by putting an advertisement on Craigslist for a guitarist. She is founder of the bands, The Clementines, and The Good Hearts. She defies categories because her voice sounds like so many things; Rock, Pop, Folk, Gospel, Broadway, and Blues.

On the April 10, 2019 edition of WMM she shared the radio debut her single, “Hell.”

We first met Nicole as part of The Clementines, originally a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer, playing LIVE on our April 25, 2012 show. Their band included Stephanie Williams on drums, and Travis Earndshaw on bass.

Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO.

Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals through – out high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education.”

She was the founder of critically acclaimed + award wining local groups, The Clementines, The Good Hearts, Nikki and the Rooftop Punch, Heart Machine. She’s written original music for her bands The Good Hearts, Heart Machine, and her solo projects.

Last November Nicole was on the cover of Camp Kansas City Magazine in a feature article written by John Long, where Nicole talks about being homeless, being rejected by her family for being lesbian, and overcoming her own fears while pursuing a career as a musician. Nicole is married to Bethany Cain and has recently found new confidence in her music ad in telling her own story of her life.

Nicole Springer is parent to a cat and 2 doggies. She is also proud wife, sister, & aunt.

Besides her own songs, Nicole Springer loves singing covers from the 1980’s – 1990’s. More info at http://www.nicolespringersings.com where you can hear her originals and covers

Artists Nicole Springer likes: Janis Joplin / Judy Garland / Beach Boys / Beatles / Broadway / The Supremes / Dixie Chicks / Haim / Tegan and Sara / 80’s pop /

Nicole sings from the heart, writing every song to be a reflective piece of her life story and as a means to evolve and grow as a human. She describes her sound as pop-folk but additional influences such as gospel, soul, and Motown find their way into the mix. With her sometimes big, always emotional vocals, Nicole performs each heartfelt song with a raw emotionality that aims to move people and free herself.

[New single written by Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy. Produced by Jeff Tweedy. Mixed by Tom Schick. All proceeds from the song will be donated to My Block, My Hood, My City – a Chicago organization ensuring seniors have access to the essentials needed to fight COVID-19. Mavis Staples on vocals; Jeff Tweedy on guitar, bass & vocals; Stephen Hodges on drums; Scott Ligon on piano; Glenn Kotche on percussion; Donny Gerrard on backing vocals; Vicki Randle on backing vocals; Kelly Hogan on backing vocals; and Akenya Seymour on backing vocals. Last year on May 10, 2019, Mavis Staples released “We Get By” her 14th studio solo album. Mavis Staples is an iconic rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. The album’s cover features the photograph “Outside Looking In” by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden. The album was produced and written by Ben Harper. Staples & Harper had previously collaborated on “Love and Trust”, a song from Staples’ 2016 album, Livin’ on a High Note. In a statement, Staples said, “These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.” Mavis Staples has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down.]

4. David Bowie – “Sunday”
from: Heathen / ISO – Columbia Records / June 11, 2002
[Heathen is the 22nd studio album by David Bowie. It was considered a comeback for him in the US market by becoming his highest charting album (number 14) since Tonight (1984). It also earned strong reviews. The BBC said the album’s title track “shows that Bowie could still pen disarmingly direct, affecting pop of a very individual inclination 30-plus years after he started”. World-wide, it sold one million copies and experienced a four-month run on the UK charts. Although its production had started before the September 11 attacks in 2001, the album was finished after that date, which resulted in the influencing of its concept. He supported the album on the Heathen Tour throughout 2002. Heathen marked the return of record producer Tony Visconti, who co-produced (with David Bowie himself) several of Bowie’s classic albums. The last album Visconti had co-produced was Scary Monsters in 1980. This was Bowie’s first album in over a decade to not include guitarist Reeves Gabrels, who debuted with the singer on Tin Machine (1989). Originally, Bowie had recorded the album Toy for release in 2001. This album was meant to feature some new songs and remakes of some of his lesser-known songs from the 1960s. Although Toy remains officially unreleased, re-recordings of the tracks “Afraid” and “Slip Away” (then titled “Uncle Floyd”), appear on Heathen. Some other re-recordings of songs from the Toy sessions were included as B-sides to the singles from Heathen. The album was recorded at the mountain-top Allaire Studios in Shokan. Early recording sessions for Heathen were by Bowie on guitars and keyboards, Visconti on bass, and Matt Chamberlain on drums. The trio recorded about forty songs, ranging from brief sketches to nearly-complete compositions. Additional recording sessions took place at several studios, and featured performances from newcomers and previous Bowie collaborators. Bowie regulars Carlos Alomar (guitar) and Sterling Campbell (drums) returned, as did The Who guitarist Pete Townshend, who played the solo on “Slow Burn” and had earlier played guitar on “Because You’re Young” from Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps). Newcomers included Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, pianist Kristeen Young, and prolific bassist Tony Levin of King Crimson. The song “I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship” contains the lowest note Bowie has ever sung on an album (G1). Although many of its songs were written for Toy, and some are cover versions, biographers and critics of the time claimed that Heathen deals with Bowie’s impressions of the September 11 attacks. The lyrics of songs such as “Slow Burn”, “Afraid”, “A Better Future” and “Heathen (The Rays)” focus on the degradation of mankind and the world in general, recalling his earlier album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and the song “Five Years”. Bowie denied that any of the album’s songs were written after September 2001, though he admitted that the songs deal with the general feeling of anxiety that he’d had in America for a number of years, adding “it’s not unlikely that you’re going to have a sense of angst in anything that’s recorded in New York or by New Yorkers.” He also said in a 2003 interview: “It was written as a deeply questioning album. Of course, it had one foot astride that awful event in September. So that was quite a traumatic album to finish. This one hints at that, but it’s not really trying to resolve any trauma. [September 11] did affect me and my family very much. We live down here.” The album contains cover versions of three songs: “Cactus” by Pixies, which features Bowie on all instruments except for bass and is his only recorded drum performance, “I’ve Been Waiting for You” by Neil Young (which had also been recorded by Pixies as a B-side for 1990’s “Velouria” single), and “I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship” by Norman Odam, aka the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, from whom Bowie lifted part of his “Ziggy Stardust” moniker in 1972. The latter two songs were taken from a list of songs that Bowie compiled in the 1970s for his never-recorded Pin Ups 2 album. Bowie, who was 55 at the time of the record’s release, said, “I’m pretty much a realist. There’s a certain age you get to when you’re not really going to be shown [on TV] anymore. The young have to kill the old. … That’s how life works. … It’s how culture works.” For this reason there were no music videos released for any of the songs from this album. The song “Sunday” was played live at the Heathen Tour and A Reality Tour concerts. A live version recorded at The Point, Dublin in November 2003 was included on the A Reality Tour DVD. A Moby remix is available on the bonus disc of the 2-CD version of Heathen, and a Tony Visconti remix was released on the European version of the single “Everyone Says ‘Hi'” and the single “I’ve Been Waiting for You”.]

5. The MGDs – “Time For Love [feat. Danielle Nicole]”

6. Jenny Lewis – “Wasted Youth”
from: On The Line / Warner Records / March 22, 2019
[On the Line is the fourth studio album by Jenny Lewis. Recorded at Capitol Records’ Studio B, the album has contributions from Beck, Ringo Starr, Ryan Adams, Don Was, Benmont Tench, Jason Falkner, and Jim Keltner. A month prior to the album’s release, Ryan Adams, who helped produce the record, was accused by several women of sexual misconduct. After the album was released, Lewis told Pitchfork: “The allegations are so serious and shocking and really fucked up, and I was so sad on so many levels when I heard, I hate that he’s on this album, but you can’t rewrite how things went. We started the record together two years ago, and he worked on it — we were in the studio for five days. Then he pretty much bounced, and I had to finish the album by myself. Jennifer Diane Lewis was born January 8, 1976, in Las Vega. She was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the indie rock band Rilo Kiley. Lewis gained prominence in the 1980s as a child actress, appearing in the films Troop Beverly Hills (1989) and The Wizard (1989) and the television series Brooklyn Bridge (1991–93). In the mid-1990s, Lewis semi-retired from acting to focus on her musical career, and formed Rilo Kiley in 1998 with fellow former child actor Blake Sennett. Rilo Kiley released four albums before they disbanded in 2014.Lewis has released four solo albums: Rabbit Fur Coat (2006), Acid Tongue (2008), The Voyager (2014) and On the Line (2019). In addition to Rilo Kiley and her solo career, Lewis has been a member of the Postal Service, Jenny & Johnny and Nice As Fuck.]

“Rising Sun” written by Peter Beatty

in the morning
the fun is gone
there’s nothing for me now
but the rising sun

9 in the morning
my joe is warm
there’s nothing to do now
but weather the storm

and I’ll do it tomorrow, how about you?
as if we have anything to lose
everything will still be here when we’re done
till we meet again, rising sun.

the room is still spinning
I’m feeling like I’ve died
but there’s no need to worry
with you by my side

We meet again, my only friend
we know this story from beginning to end
so stop the nonsense and quit playing pretend

dancing shadows fill the room
and ill sing that familiar tune
we all know that we’re going to soon
but it the end I know love will bloom

and I’ll do it tomorrow, how about you?
as if we have anything to lose
everything will still be here when we’re done
till we meet again, rising sun.

Cruis’n written by Peter Beatty

Ridin’ down the avenue
start to think about something new
have a heart to heart, me and you
figure out if our love is true

is he the one you want
is she the one you want
are they the one you want
am I the one you want

cruis’n down the boulevard
babe I know that your life’s been hard
I think its time that I pull your card
and figure out who you really are

is he the one you want
is she the one you want
are they the one you want
am I the one you want

11. Pedaljets – “Disassociation Blues”
from: Twist The Lens / Electric Moth Records / February 14, 2020
[Twist The Lens was recorded in three main sessions, produced by the Pedaljets alongside their former lead guitarist Paul Malinowski (Shiner, Season To Risk). Though the Pedaljets core trio of Allmayer, bassist Matt Kesler, and drummer Rob Morrow has remained a constant throughout their tenure as a band, they’ve worked with multiple lead guitarists throughout the years, with Twist The Lens being the first record to showcase their newest addition, Cody Wyoming. Bringing in Wyoming, and working alongside Malinowski, allowed the new songs to benefit from a fresh and outside perspective, while still keeping the album within the Pedaljets family. It also lent itself to a more utilitarian process where, as Allmayer describes, “We would constantly listen back and ask ourselves, ‘Are you hearing something this song needs?’ We were really focused on pushing ourselves to make the best music we can and being extra critical.” To round out the team, the band brought in veteran producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) to mix the record and reunited with Archer Prewitt (The Sea and Cake) whose artwork has adorned the last three Pedaljets album covers.]

11:04 – Interview with Matt Kesler

Matt Kesler plays bass and sings with the band Pedaljets who earlier this year released “Twist The Lens,” on Electric Moth Records. Formed in 1984, Pedaljets made a name for themselves playing alongside Hüsker Dü, The Replacements and Flaming Lips. In 1989 the band broke up just after the release of their second album, “The Pedaljets.” However, 20 years later, the band came back together in 2008, to give that album a proper, remastered release. Working with producer Paul Malinowski playing lead guitar, the band’s reunion led to “What’s In Between” in 2013, their first album of new material in 23 years. Now, six years later, “Twist The Lens” their fourth full-length, is the first to feature new guitarist Cody Wyoming (of The Philistines), while previous guitarist Paul Malinowski served as producer. Matt Kesler was also the proprietor of Midwestern Musical Company a music store that sold musical equipment, amps, instruments and served as a venue for years of live performances and Midwest Music Foundation Benefit shows. Matt Kesler was the original bass player for The Wilders and he also plays with the bands, SHE SAID, The Doo Dads and Midtown Quartet.

Matt Kesler Thanks for being with on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Because The Pedaljets broke up for 20 years, all of the members started their own families and other bands. Coming back together as a band, after all of those years, all of you were in different places and touring and live performances now were navigated in new ways. The Pedaljets were originally going to be on tour right now, coming back to Kansas City to play Record Store day at Mills Record Company. All of that has been postponed.

The Pedaljets, played an Album Release Party, Saturday, February 15, at 8:00 PM at miniBar, 3810 Broadway Rd, KCMO with Dan Jones and The Squids.

Once hailed as “Kansas City’s answer to The Replacements,” the Pedaljets formed in the mid-80s and immediately began touring the United States nonstop, gaining critical acclaim and support slots with some of the decade’s biggest acts, but never becoming a household name on their own.

After releasing two LPs, 1988’s “Today Today” and 1989’s “Pedaljets,” the band split up.

After laying low for a few years, Allmayer and Morrow formed the band Grither and signed with MCA before Morrow decided to go back to school and relocate to Scotland.

Kesler owned and operated the KC vintage music shop Midwestern Musical Company, selling gear to artists including St. Vincent, The Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell and more.

The Pedaljets couldn’t stay apart forever though, and returned in 2008 with a re-recorded version of their self-titled album and a rekindled hunger to perform.

20 years later, the band came back together in 2008, to give that album a proper, remastered release. Working with producer Paul Malinowski playing lead guitar, the reunion led to “What’s In Between” in 2013, the band’s first new material in 23 years.

6 years later, “Twist The Lens” their 4th full-length, is the first to feature new guitarist Cody Wyoming while previous guitarist Paul Malinowski served as producer.

16. John Lennon – “Nobody Told Me”
from: Milk and Honey / Polydor-Geffen / January 27, 1984
[“Nobody Told Me” was a song that John Lennon had intended for Ringo Starr’s 1981 album “Stop and Smell the Roses.” It was released as a single and became a worldwide Top 10 hit. Other singles from Milk and Honey were “I’m Stepping Out” and “Borrowed Time”. The songs “Let Me Count the Ways” and “Grow Old with Me” were written by Lennon and Ono to each other using inspiration from poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning. They are presented in their demo form. Milk and Honey is the sixth and final album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released in 1984. Following the compilation The John Lennon Collection, it is Lennon’s eighth and final studio album, and the first posthumous release of new Lennon music, having been recorded in the last months of his life during and following the sessions for his 1980 album Double Fantasy. It was assembled by Yoko Ono in association with the Geffen label. Milk and Honey was the duo’s projected follow-up to Double Fantasy, though Lennon’s death caused a temporary shelving of the project. It took Ono three years to be able to resume work to complete it. Ono’s material largely comprises new recordings, which she undertook during the album’s preparation in 1983, which give her songs a more commercial and contemporary edge. Conversely, Lennon’s material, being rough takes and rehearsal recordings, has a more casual feeling. The album title came from Ono, who explained that it referred to their journey to the US, “the land of milk and honey”. “But also, in the Scripture, the land of milk and honey is where you go after you die, as a promised land”, Ono went on to say. “So it’s very strange that I thought of that title. Almost scary – like someone up there told me to call the next album Milk and Honey.” The cover is an alternative take from the same photo session that produced the front cover of Double Fantasy, though this time it appears in colour. After a falling out with David Geffen, whose Geffen Records had initially released Double Fantasy, Ono moved future projects to Polydor Records, which initially released Milk and Honey. EMI, home of Lennon’s entire recorded output—including that with the Beatles—acquired this and all Lennon releases in the late 1990s. Predictably, the reaction to Milk and Honey was less fanatical than the one that afforded Double Fantasy in the wake of Lennon’s death, but it was still well received, peaking at No. 3 in the UK and No. 11 in the US, where it went gold. Jack Douglas, who had co-produced Double Fantasy with Lennon and Ono, also had input into the initial sessions for Milk and Honey, though Ono declined to credit him after their professional relationship soured following Lennon’s death. In 2001, Ono supervised the remastering of Milk and Honey for its CD reissue, adding three bonus tracks and a 22-minute excerpt from Lennon’s last interview in the late afternoon of 8 December 1980, hours before his death. The bonus tracks include home demo recordings of “I’m Stepping Out” and “I’m Moving On” (from Double Fantasy) along with a version of “Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him” featuring Lennon’s vocals only, which was planned to be included on the Ono tribute album Every Man Has a Woman (released 1984).]

2. David Burchfield – “O Big City”
from: State To State / David Burchfield / June 5, 2020
[“O Big City” was released March 24, 2020. It is the first of 5 singles to be released from, State To State, followed by “Ain’t Gonna Be Easy” that was released on April 7. David Burchfield on acoustic guitars & vocals; Evan Coulumbe on guitars; Danica Cunningham on fiddle & vocals; Joshua James on keyboards, vocals, guitars, percussion & howls; Neil McCormick on bass; Michael John Mckee on drums; Austie Robison on trumpet; and Devon Teran on guitars & lap steel. Produced and engineered by all around nice guy Joshua James inside Willamette Mtn Studio and Farm in American Fork, Utah, USA with assistant engineering by Josh Snider. Mastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering in LA “I learned a lot from that time,” Burchfield says of his unplugged nights in the Rocky Mountain backcountry. That brush with death is recounted on the pensive one-two hush of “Midnight on the Water” and “You’re OK, It’s Alright.” The former is a quick, solemn hit of traditional fiddle tune, while the latter is a poignant Burchfield original, inspired by a hair-raising crash, and the stark perspective that came in its wake—perspective that ultimately led him to rededicate his life to music. “I’d made two previous albums right out of college, and then more or less quit to move to Colorado and become an elementary-school teacher,” he says. “I was in my second year teaching when a truck hit me while driving my scooter home one night.” Rushed to the hospital, Burchfield awoke to find he’d escaped with only a broken nose and a concussion. Above all, he was left with a potent reminder of life’s brevity and a fresh sense of urgency. Once again, he picked up the guitar, and out poured “You’re OK, It’s Alright,” the first of the songs that now comprise State to State. His passion for making music was rekindled. David Burchfield has never sounded more at home.]

4. Lyra Pramuk – “Tendril”
from: Fountain / Bedroom Community / March 20, 2020
[Lyra Pramuk’s debut explores a post-human, non-binary understanding of life. Lyra fuses classical training, pop sensibilities, performance practices and contemporary club culture in what may best be described as futurist folk music. The American opera-trained vocalist and electronic musician releases her album via Iceland’s Bedroom Community label. Created entirely from her own voice, although often shaped and structured by electronics, Fountain is an emotional, sensual, and devotional journey. The title is derived from her family name, Pramuk, which translates from Czech as ‘well spring’ or ‘fountain.’ Often wordless, these songs evoke a new wholeness sustained by the ritual force of drowning, immersion, cleansing, and bathing – also referred to in the album artwork by acclaimed visual artist Donna Huanca. Fountain plays with the perception of music, rhythms, speech, body, and the relation between technology and humanity, exploring a post-human, non-binary understanding of life and the fragile ecosystems it depends on. The work documents a healing that is still in process, and a full circle-moment that reunited Lyra with her sound engineer twin brother, Ben, for the final mix, which they completed in tandem. As a vocal activist and member of the queer community, Lyra moved to Berlin in 2013, following her degree at the Eastman School of Music in New York. Since then, she has also been awarded residencies at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm, Open Port Club Residency in Tokyo and Sapporo, and Future Music Lab of the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine. Her interests also encompass writing, poetry, and fashion, where she is sometimes called upon as a model. As a performance artist, she has collaborated extensively with Donna Huanca and at events such as Glasgow International and the Rochester Fringe Festival. Music composed and produced by Lyra Pramuk. Vocals recorded by Lyra Pramuk and Ben Pramuk in Berlin and at EMS Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm. Mixed by Ben Pramuk in Berlin. Mastered by Valgeir Sigurðsson and Francesco Fabris at Greenhouse Studios.]

7. Yazmin Lacey – “Morning Matters”
from: Morning Matters – EP / Own Your Own Records / March 27, 2020
[Written by Yazmin Lacey / C.Dodds / M.Mbemba / S.Tandy / I.Ogunjobi. Produced by Craigie Dodds. Engineered by Hugh Fothergill Mixed by Eric Lau. Yazmin Lacey on vocals, Sarah Tandy on keyboards, Marla Mbemba on bass, Femi Koleoso on drums, Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet. Yazmin Lacey didn’t set out to be a singer. Born and raised in Manor Park, East London, she relocated to Nottingham whilst working for a children’s charity and initially only considered making music as a way of having fun with friends. However, a chance encounter lead to her earning a place on Future Bubblers – Gilles Peterson’s development programme devoted to discovering and nurturing fresh UK talent – and enthused by the experience, Lacey recorded some songs in her living room, then in 2017 self-released her debut EP, Black Moon. The more polished When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees EP followed in 2018 and includes standout single Something My Heart Trusts, which has clocked up over 4.3 million plays on Spotify. “As soon as I made that first EP I knew there would be three of them, and this is the third”, says Lacey of Morning Matters. “Black Moon was trauma, When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees was healing, and Morning Matters is moving forward.” Morning Matters is Lacey’s most accomplished offering yet and showcases her growing abilities and confidence. The singer pairs candid songwriting with a laidback, graceful delivery and – as the title suggests – Morning Matters is inspired by new dawns and fresh starts. “The EP is dedicated to anyone that’s ever struggled with getting up and out in the morning, for everyone doing work on themselves and trying to live better”, explains Lacey. Contributors include Femi Koleoso and Ife Ogunjobi of Ezra Collective on drums and trumpet respectively (Own Your Own, Morning Matters), celebrated pianist Sarah Tandy on keys (Morning Matters), and jazz protege Moses Boyd on drums and production (Lately, Morning Sunrise).]

Members include Belle Loux on lead vocals, John Loux on guitar. Belle & The Vertigo Waves are releasing a new single on April 17, with a new music video at the band’s instagram page @thevertigowaves. Belle & The Vertigo Waves joined us on WMM on February 5, 2020 and in 2019 in the summer. More info at: http://www.thevertigowaves.com The band’s debut full length album “Aligned” was released on October 6, 2017. About the album, Belle told Michelle Bacon at The Bridge that, “Many of the tunes had been written around five years prior, when I was just 15 or 16.” Belle had only played them as a solo artist with occasional accompaniment from her dad, guitarist John Loux, and keyboardist Charlie Hibberd. In 2017, she hired the two musicians and a couple other friends to track “Aligned,” dubbing the project Belle and the Vertigo Waves, in the hopes that she’d eventually assemble a live band. “Recording was a surreal and emotional experience. Playing the songs with a band was like seeing them come to life,” she said. “I knew there was no way I could be a solo artist anymore, because I fell in love with the full band sound so much.” The music of Belle & The Vertigo Waves have been described as having an “1980s pop-laden sound.” which drew local attention in 2018. Belle has said that in the past 4 years the band has grown to have more of a darker, glam rock sound, grittier and grungier. Their sound is influenced by three generations of musicians in the band, Belle’s growth as a songwriter and singer, and through the band’s work with engineer and producer Paul Malinowski. Belle & The Vertigo Waves are currently recording new music at Massive Sound Studios. Belle & The Vertigo Waves release a new EP, and new video later this year. ]

Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. Jenna & Martin

15. Jenna & Martin – “Wild Side of Heaven”
from: Cosmic Western Duets / Lost Cowgirl Records / January 3, 2020
[Jenna Rae and Martin Farrell Jr. met in Winfield, Kansas at Walnut Valley Bluegrass Music Festival. Both were playing banjo in separate bands at the time and bonded through their love of classic country music. They started learning Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris duets and quickly realized their voices nested well together. Determined to recreate classic country sounding music in a new way they started collaborating on a genre they call “Cosmic Western”. This music incorporates bluegrass techniques, gospel harmonies, rock rhythms and experimental classic country sounds. The duo performs as “Jenna & Martin” wearing coordinated outfits and often times sharing the stage with their standard poodle, Roy Rogers. Martin makes his telecaster guitar and pedal steel guitar speak like a dog, kitten, truck, chicken or whatever the song requires. Creating a wall of rockin’ sound they take their listeners on a Cosmic Western journey through old-timey sounding music and nostalgic emotions.// Jenna likes to write songs that are “three chords and the truth” while Martin loves to add in unexpected chords, key changes, and complex arrangements. Jenna will often take a simple song she has written to Martin and he will add in a new bridge or chord that takes the song to a new level. Martin says Jenna has helped him truly appreciate the simplicity in songwriting and recognize it as a valuable tool to reach the listener. Most of Jenna’s songs are true stories and emotions about her or people she knows. Martin likes to create fictional stories and characters as well as retell historical stories in a new way. Together they come up with lyrics that can make you laugh and cry in the same breath. While the duo loves writing together, they also think it’s important to keep their separate songwriting identities. In 2018, they both released solo records: Jenna Rae “Workin’ Woman” and Martin Farrell Jr. “Tales From the Outer Country”. All of the music they have released has been recorded in their home studio and produced by Martin. // In 2017 with hopes and dreams of taking their music careers to the next level, Jenna & Martin started renovating a short school bus to live and tour out of. They sold a lot of what they owned and moved their bus “Bussalo Bill” out to Jenna’s Grandma’s farm in Peculiar, Missouri. They experienced “country living” for the first time and wrote a lot of music during this time. Many of these songs will be featured on their upcoming album “Cosmic Western Duets”. Jenna’s Grandma passed away in the summer of 2018 and the duo found themselves moving back to the city, out of the bus and into a house in Kansas City, Kansas. Here they set up their studio in their living room and began recording for other people as well. // In the winter 2018, the duo released their first EP together titled “Gingerbread” featuring three original holiday songs. They also wrote, directed, produced, and starred in an eleven minute short film to go along with the album with a surprising twist at the end. // In January, 2020 they released their first full length album of music titled “Cosmic Western Duets”. Most of the songs they co-wrote or they wrote specifically to sing together. They also included two love songs on the album, one written entirely by Jenna for Martin and another written entirely by Martin for Jenna. Since the moment they met, Jenna & Martin found themselves on an undeniable path of writing, creating, producing and performing music together. The duo believes in the power of music and that a good song can turn someone’s day around or even their life. At every show they aim to evoke cosmic and spiritual emotions from their audience that reminds them that each of us is more than our physical being. // Some of their influences include: Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Margo Price, Nikki Lane, Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Danny Barnes, John Hartford and coffee.]

She embraces personal triumphs on “I Came For The Band (For Show),” breathes new perspective into “Terlingual Girl,” a song she wrote as a 19-year-old in the South-Texan desert, and professes brave truths as heard in “You’ve Got Other Girls for That.” After a vagabond past, crossing paths with hundreds of musicians, she limits the cast of Other Girls to just her brother, sister, and a few trusted collaborators. 5. Lyra Pramuk – “Mirror”
from: Fountain / Bedroom Community / March 20, 2020

6. The Abracadabras – “Give Me Your Name”
from: Be Still, Be Cool / The Abracadabras / January 1, 2008
[5-piece KC band formed in the spring of 2007, with John Nixon on keyboards & vocals, Travis Mckenzie on lead guitar, Bobby (Wayne Hutcherson) Topaz on guitar & vocals, Collin Rausch on bass & vocals, and Kyle Rausch on drums & vocals. Richard Gintowt wrote about The Abracadabras for the October 9, 2008 edition of The Pitch: Be Still, Be Cool is …an avalanche of tunes inspired by alternative rock, Britpop, ’60s psychedelia, hippie folk, and swampy Southern blues. Regardless of what labels or managers get behind it (or not), Be Still, Be Cool sounds like a big-time record — not the annoying Fall Out Boy sort but rather the well-rounded Supergrass variety. Recorded with producer Mike Crawford at his upstart studio, The Impossible Box, the album showcases a breadth of recording techniques from one-take numbers to the sort of trickery that has informed albums since Sgt. Pepper’s. Each track is stacked with harmonies, guitar overdubs and vintage keyboards. “We threw the whole kitchen sink into it,” lead singer John Nixon says. “Mike added a lot of great X factors to tracks. He’d dial up perfect guitar and keyboard tones.” Nixon says the group intended to stack the front of the record with pop songs and then let it “slowly unveil itself as something else.” The song “Deep” is a mellow acoustic number in the vein of CSN&Y, while “Show Me the Sunrise, Callie Anne” summons the campfire country-rock of the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers. Such detours complement infectious two-minute singles like “C’mon and Get It!” and “An Argument.” “We’re enthusiasts of the art of order and timing,” Collin Rausch says. “One of my favorite things to do is take classic rock records and rearrange them to see if I can make them better.” This Friday’s album-release party at the Riot Room should offer a sense of vindication after a long summer. The frustrating events unfolded in July, when a prospective label fell out of the loop and manager Harley Sears also exited the picture. Sears, who also worked with KC bands Lovers in Transit and the Rich Boys, relocated to New York City in May. He says the decision to part ways with the Abracadabras was “amicable and necessary” due to other commitments. “I enjoyed the time we spent together,” Sears says. “Their new album was a labor of love, and the end result was a true work of art.” However amicable the split was, the Abracadabras couldn’t help but feel a bit bummed. “We went from almost being signed and having a manager and possibly moving to nothing,” Rausch says. “No matter how hard you try to stay grounded, you get your hopes up.” Adds guitarist Bobby Topaz (real name: Wayne Hutcherson): “It was like the rug was pulled out from under us. There was a week where we all sitting around scratching our heads like, ‘What’s next?’” The events motivated the group to self-release Be Still, Be Cool. They began unveiling tracks on their MySpace page a couple of months ago, leading up to a free release of the album this week. Rather than invest in hard copies, the band is handing out cards with free download codes. They also plan to make the entire album available for download via MySpace. “I think in the long term it’ll be better to give it away,” Nixon says. “The point is that we’re not big, and we’re not making money now anyways, so we may as well try to get people to come to shows.” Nixon is also adamant about downsizing the group’s reputation for dressing up at shows, preferring to redirect the focus toward the music. “It became more of a thing to talk about what we were wearing than what we were doing,” he says. “[Making the record] was a long and frustrating journey, so we had to do things to entertain ourselves and the audience in the meantime. I think we all like making music more than putting on shiny jackets and making sure our hair is pretty. We like that, too, obviously”.]

10. Yves Tumor – “Identity Trade”
from: Heaven To a Tortured Mind / Warp Records / April 2, 2020
[4th album from Sean Bowie, best known by the recording alias Yves Tumor, is an American producer of experimental electronic music, born in Miami, Florida and currently based in Turin, Italy. Raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tumor started making music at age 17 as an outlet away from “dull, conservative surroundings.” They taught themself to play drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards. Describing their experience growing up in Tennessee as unpleasant, they moved at age 20 to San Diego, and after college to Los Angeles, where they met Mykki Blanco in 2012, with whom they later toured for two and a half years throughout Europe and Asia.In the early 2010s, Tumor recorded as Teams, and made music which AllMusic described as “post-chillwave”. They debuted their Yves Tumor project in 2015 with an EP for Berlin’s experimental club label Janus, and another one for Blanco’s label, Dogfood MG. That same year, they self-released their first album, When Man Fails You (which would later be re-released by Apothecary Compositions on April 29, 2016). In September 2016, Tumor signed with PAN Records and released its label debut, Serpent Music. They had worked on the album for three years after moving to Leipzig, Germany. The album was recorded between Miami, Leipzig, Los Angeles and Berlin. In Pitchfork’s review of the album, critic Andy Beta compared Tumor’s musical style to James Ferraro and Dean Blunt, and noted their use of “unsettling percussive loops and field recordings to create a mood as if lost in a strange urban landscape”. In September 2017, Tumor released a compilation album titled Experiencing the Deposit of Faith for free. Later that week, it was revealed through a tour announcement that Tumor had signed to Warp Records. Following the announcement, they embarked on a tour with a new audiovisual show. In September 2018, Tumor released their Warp debut, Safe in the Hands of Love, with no prior announcement. It was preceded by the singles “Noid” on July 24, “Licking an Orchid” featuring James K on August 29, and “Lifetime” on September 3. The album received universal acclaim from music critics. Pitchfork’s Jayson Greene stated in their review that the album “dwarfs everything the artist has released by several orders of magnitude. The leap is so audacious it’s disorienting.” Tumor’s fourth album, Heaven to a Tortured Mind, was released on April 3, 2020, preceded on March 3 by the single “Kerosene” featuring Diana Gordon. Alexis Petridis, reviewing the album for The Guardian, awarded it Album of the Week, describing it as “extraordinary: experimental, capable of any genre, with an internal logic powering its shifts in mood. Tumor has cited Throbbing Gristle as a major influence, saying: “There’s something about their music, like the hypnotic trance vibes, that really influenced me.]

18. John Prine – “Illegal Smile”
from: John Prine / Atlantic / 1971
[John Prine (October 10, 1946 – April 7, 2020) was an American country folk singer-songwriter. He was active as a composer, recording artist, and live performer from the early 1970s until his death, and was known for an often humorous style of country music that has elements of protest and social commentary. Born and raised in Maywood, Illinois, Prine learned to play the guitar at the age of 14. He attended classes at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. After serving in West Germany with the U.S. Army, he moved to Chicago in the late 1960s, where he worked as a mailman, writing and singing songs as a hobby. A member of Chicago’s folk revival, he was discovered by Kris Kristofferson (although Prine himself credited film critic Roger Ebert[2]), resulting in the production of Prine’s self-titled debut album with Atlantic Records in 1971. After receiving critical acclaim, Prine focused on his musical career, recording three more albums for Atlantic. He then signed to Asylum Records, where he recorded an additional three albums. In 1984 he co-founded Oh Boy Records, an independent record label with which he would release most of his subsequent albums. After his battle with squamous cell cancer in 1998, Prine’s vocals deepened into a gravelly voice.Widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, Prine was known for humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, as well as serious songs with social commentary, and songs which recollect melancholy tales from his life. // John Prine is the début album by American country/folk singer-songwriter John Prine, issued by Atlantic Records in 1971. In 2012, the album was ranked number 452 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Prine was offered a recording contract by Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records after the record executive saw the singer perform several of his own songs at a Kris Kristofferson show at the Bitter End. The song “Paradise” was recorded at A&R Studios in New York (with Prine’s brother Dave and good friend Steve Goodman as sidemen) but the remaining cuts were recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis. Produced by Arif Mardin, who had previously collaborated with the likes of Aretha Franklin and King Curtis, Prine found his new studio surroundings intimidating. In the Great Days: The John Prine Anthology liner notes he admits, “I was terrified. I went straight from playing by myself, still learning how to sing, to playing with Elvis Presley’s rhythm section.” Initially, the musicians at American, accustomed to playing heavily rhythmic material and funky grooves, were thrown by Prine and his songs. As recounted in Eddie Huffman’s biography John Prine: In Spite of Himself, percussionist Hayward Bishop later recalled, “There was no evidence of groove whatever, and I was hungry for groove. Prine came off like a folk poet. This guy was really nasally, he didn’t have any tone to his voice, and all his songs were in the same key! I thought, ‘This is gonna be like milking a dag-blasted dog!’”]

Brodie writes: “This album is a journey into the sculpting process of creating “A Mountain of Yeses”. In contrast to the original release, this compilation contains alternate mixes, isolated tracks and demo versions. Be/Non presents a bizarro-like version of the AMOY album, showing an alternate universe what could have been if the creation of the album went on a divergent path. Behold the paradoxical serendipity of Be/Non’s unique take on constructing a space-themed story/album. A visual accompaniment to the album has been in production since 2008 and now has a 2021 release date.”
