2. Destroyer – “Tinseltown Swimming in Blood”

[11th studio album from Destroyer from Vancouver, British Columbia fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar and formed in 1995. Destroyer songs are characterized by abstract, poetic lyrics and idiosyncratic vocals. The band’s discography draws on a variety of musical influences, resulting in albums that can sound markedly distinct from one another; in Bejar’s words, “That’s kind of my goal: to start from scratch every time.” Daniel Bejar was born October 4, 1972. Bejar has gained widespread popularity through his musical collaborations with Vancouver indie-rock band The New Pornographers, but has released far more material as the frontman of his band Destroyer. He is renowned for his poetic and often cryptic lyrics as well as his unorthodox vocals. Bejar’s father was a Spanish physicist and his mother was a Spanish teacher. Growing up, Bejar moved frequently, and as an adult he has resided in Canada and Spain. Bejar attended University of British Columbia for three years: “To my credit, I eventually dropped out; to my discredit, I waited three years to do it. I was taking mostly English and Philosophy classes, fooling myself into thinking I might be an academic.”]

[Brodie Rush is a songwriter, musician, singer, organizer, artist, film maker, music video creator. Over 20 years ago KC native, Brodie Rush formed the experimental, psychedelic, prog-pop band. In 1996, Be/Non recorded two sets of songs in a small home studio in Lawrence, Kansas, that would become their first two EPs released on cassette. Be/Non, The band has had more members than Spinal Tap, but Brodie has remained the only consistent member, songwriter and producer. Be/Non personnel: 2007, Brodie Rush – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Bass, Percussion, Drums; Ben Ruth – Bass, Upright Bass, Vocals; Adam Stotts – Guitar, Vocals; John Huff – Keyboards, Synths, Vocals; Adam Phillips – Drums (although Ryan Shank – played Drums on this track.) The troubled “Freedom Palace” LP was recorded over 10 years ago in the summer of 2007 by Paul Malinowski and Brodie Rush in Kansas City, Missouri. Anodyne Records had commissioned Be/Non to re-record songs from, “RAN” and “Esperanto At The Pantheon, Incognito” along with other unreleased material. The music from the title track “Freedom Palace” was written by John Huff and had the album been released, would have been the first Be/Non composition not penned by Brodie Rush. Be/Non was a 5 piece before recording negotiations began in 2007. Directly before preproduction, the band had lost its drummer of 3 years and Be/Non was actively searching for a replacement. Between Brodie filling in on drums for two songs and Billy Brimblecom playing drums on another track, Be/Non asked Adam Phillips of The Architects to drum on the album’s remaining songs. The album was mostly recorded at Westend Studios in Kansas City and at Brodie’s home studio The Gold Room. After tracking 97% of the album, the project was taken to Studio G in Brooklyn New York for mixing by Joel Hamilton. 10 days later, the album was mixed and ready for duplication. No formal album covers had been decided on. John Huff had an idea of a Unipegadong by a nebula in space, while Brodie was thinking a castle floating in mid air. The first cover idea was mostly just pointing arrows going in all directions. Emotionally that was probably the closest to the mindset of that recording. The album “Freedom Palace” was never pressed or released. Because a contractual arrangement could not be agreed upon between Anodyne Records and Be/Non, the band would not see an album released until 2009, “A Mountain Of Yeses”, 11 years after it’s last release in 1998. “Freedom Palace” is dismissed by the band as a complete failure. Ultimately not having rights to the recordings, the inability to reach a contractual agreement with Anodyne Records and unhappiness with the final mix led to the disbanding of the “Freedom Palace” line up in early 2008. Reclusive, secluded and freshly divorced, a depressed Brodie Rush stopped all live performances for the next two years. Spending time to construct the concept record “A Mountain Of Yeses” as a solo endeavor under the Be/Non band moniker. Then, six years later in 2014, John Hulston of Anodyne Records graciously gave Brodie Rush full rights to the “Freedom Palace” recordings and masters. Be/Non has since tried numerous times to re-record the material for a proper release, but never could fully accomplish this task. Finally, for the entire world, for better or for worse, Be/Non and Haymaker Records would like to present the final mix of “Freedom Palace” the way it was originally intended. Be/Non adamantly renounces the production, mix and performances on these recordings, with few exceptions. The album was mixed and recorded during a dizzying haze of drug and alcohol abuse. The lyrics, the tone and the feel of the record is very unfocused, angry and misguided. This record does not reflect the proper sonic soundscape or performances Brodie Rush and Be/Non had intended whatsoever. “Freedom Palace” was full of rehashed versions of songs better left to their previous incarnations. “Moi Ou Toi” from the 7″ is a remake from “Freedom Palace” but the “FP” version is a remake of the original “Ran” version. Complicated. In fact ALL of the recordings on “FP” are remakes from “Ran” and “Esperanto.” “Do the Heat” and “Lucy” are again remakes of the “Ran” and “Esperanto” versions. The version of “Ice Fight” on “FP” I think… is different than the B-Side to “Moi Ou Toi”. A different remix with other instruments. We had two different versions from 2015. The Kraftwerk reference was unintentional. John Huff started playing that back in 2006 but hadn’t heard the Kraftwerk song until I played it for him in 2015. He just did that and thought he was cool. I hadn’t heard that tune until 2010 or so. It was an accident. There is an unreleased, unfinished song called “No God Of Mine” I recorded in 2002 on my 8 track that when I tried to remake it in 2007 with Mike Cochran on drums, John heard it and played me a song from the band YWKMBT Trail Of Dead from 2005 that was almost identical even the timing on the changes. The vocal melody was different tho. I got so disturbed by it that I stop working on the song altogether. “Garlic”, “In The Nighttime” “More Than Enough” and “Current And The Rind” were all part of an unreleased collection called “Enhance The Smoky” from 2000. Same year “Tenderfoot” was written.]

Momma’s Boy, an Indie Surf Pop 4-piece band from KCMO, formed December 2015, and made up of former members of Rev Gusto: Peter Beatty on guitar & vocals, Shaun Crowley on guitar & vocals, Quinn Hernandez on drums, and Jared Bajkowski on bass & vocals. Recorded at Element Recording Studios with Joel Nanos.Their debut EP Liquid Courage was released Feb. 25, 2017.]

5. Superorganism – “Everybody Wants To Be Famous”

[Superorganism is an indie pop band that formed in early 2017. The group is made up of 8 members, one of which is a 17-year-old Japanese girl only known as Orono. The 7 other members go by the names of Harry, Emily, Ruby, B, Tucan, Soul, and Robert. The group, started with members from all over the world including The United States, Japan, South Korea, London, Australia, and New Zealand, makes original internet-age electronically-tinged indie pop music. Bandmembers Harry, Emily, Ruby, B, Tucan, Soul, and Robert were all longtime friends who decided it was finally time to work together. Harry and Emily met Orono during one of their old band’s Japan shows (she attended as a fan), and they struck up a Facebook friendship with their future bandmate. After discovering she could sing, they invited her to add lyrics and vocals to a demo they’d been working on for a new project at the beginning of 2017.]

MidCoast Radio Project Board Member and 90.1 FM Membership Committee Chair – Lesley Pories joins to talk about 90.1 FM KKFI, and how listeners can become more involved. Lesley moved to KC four years ago and has been volunteering at 90.1 FM for most of that time, and has served on the Board of Directors for two of those years. A DC native, Lesley has a Masters in Urban Planning from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters in International Relations from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. Aside from the East Coast, she’s lived and worked in Uzbekistan, India and Guinea. Here in KC, she also serves on the Board of BikeWalkKC. During the day, Lesley works as a Senior Sector Analyst at water and sanitation non-profit, Water.org.

Performed by Sisco with members of The Blackberry Winter Band: Linda Stoffel – Vocals, Dennis Crider – Guitar, Van Colbert – Banjo, Tedi May – Upright Bass, Bo Brown – Mandolin & Dobro. Marideth Sisco is a journalist, teacher, author, musician, student of folklore, and creator of Elder Mountain Press, a venue for publishing stories relevant to Ozarks culture and history. You can hear her essays “These Ozarks Hills” on public radio, ksmu.org. Discovered by producers of the independent film Winter’s Bone who asked her to be a part of the film and to serve as music consultant. “Winter’s Bone,” ended up winning best picture and best screenplay at Sundance Film Festival, it was honored at the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for four Academy Awards. 9. David Byrne – “Everybody’s Coming To My House”
from: American Utopia / Todomundo – Nonesuch / March 9, 2018
[Co written with Brian Eno. David Byrne’s first solo studio album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Even though since then he has released albums with Brian Eno, Fat Boy Slim, and St. Vincent. The album is his 11th outside of his work with talking Heads. The new album is one part of a larger multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful which aims to give reasons for being happy and optimistic in spite of political strife and environmental problems. The project was entitled after the Ian Dury song “Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3)”. David Byrne writes: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking. This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses. Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on. I have no prescriptions or surefire answers, but I sense that I am not the only one looking and asking, wondering and still holding onto some tiny bit of hope, unwilling to succumb entirely to despair or cynicism.”]

12. Sufjan Stevens – “Tonya Harding (In Eb major)”

[Sufjan Stevens (SOOF-yan) was born July 1, 1975, and is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His debut album A Sun Came was released in 2000 on the Asthmatic Kitty label which he cofounded with his stepfather. He is perhaps best known for his 2005 album Illinois, which hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the single “Chicago” from that album. Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there until the age of nine, when his family moved to Petoskey, in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. He was raised by his father Rasjid and his stepmother Pat, only occasionally visiting his mother, Carrie, in Oregon after she married her second husband Lowell Brams. (Brams later became the head of Stevens’ record label Asthmatic Kitty).He attended the Detroit Waldorf School, Petoskey High School and Interlochen Arts Academy, and graduated from Harbor Light Christian School. He then attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and earned a Masters of Fine Arts from The New School in New York City. Sufjan is a Persian name meaning “comes with a sword”. It predates Islam and most famously belonged to Abu Sufyan, a figure from early Islamic history. The name was given to Stevens by the founder of Subud, an inter-faith spiritual community to which his parents belonged when he was born. A multi-instrumentalist, Stevens is known for his use of the banjo, but also plays guitar, piano, drums, xylophone, and several other instruments, often playing all of these on his albums through the use of multitrack recording. While in school, he studied the oboe and English horn, which he also plays on his albums. Stevens did not learn to play the guitar until his time at Hope College. Stevens lives in Kensington, Brooklyn, in New York City, where he makes up the Brooklyn staff of Asthmatic Kitty Records.]

11:15 – Interview with Ryan Wilks & Tim J. Harte

Ryan Wilks is a Kansas City based artist who’s work has explored gender issues, queer erotica, femininity and sexuality. His new exhibit, Here Where You Wish, is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, 2018. Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way being crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish. Tim J Harte is composing ritual based sounds/music for the event. The 40 square feet altar is being constructed by Sean Prudden and Ryan Wilks, to house the objects that people bring to the piece.

He just recently composed music and conducted a 7 piece ensemble for Trench Warfare, a theatrical performance presented last Saturday evening, January 13, at the National World War I Museum and Memorial J.C. Here Where You Wish is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, Central Library location at 14 W. 10th St. on April 6, 2018.

From Ryan’s press materials: Kansas City-based visual artist Ryan Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the KCPL Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry way that encourages the public to consciously and methodically enter. The elaborate and flowing entrance is meticulously crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish.

Tim J Harte akadungionmaster is composing ritual based sounds/music to softly play through the installation. The altar itself will be 40 square feet and constructed by Sean Prudden and Ryan Wilks, and will beautifully house the objects that people leave behind.

We are talking with Ryan Wilks & Tim J. Harte about the new exhibit, Here Where You Wish

From Ryan’s press materials: Altars are typically resurrected to pay homage to a historical event or to worship deities. This altar is intended to serve as a nondenominational safe-space for personal expression and reflection. Created for everyone, by everyone. People from all walks of life are encouraged to write down a wish and leave it on the altar. A wish, a non-religious prayer, opens us up to a child-like connection to the invisible and allows us to gently believe even if just for a second that what we most desire can and will come true if we are bold enough to speak its name.

2017 was a hard year for all of us. No matter what side of the protest lines we stand, we do so because we are uneasy, angry, afraid, and unwilling to compromise what we think is right. There is a need to create a safe and sacred space for all of us to feel hope in. To believe in the power of the individual and of a wish.

The altar will be up for 3 months and will grow substantially in its aesthetic as people leave behind a wish on paper and/or an object. Wilks will be rolling up the paper wishes and tying them to hundreds of feather sculptures rotating above the altar, stirring the energy of the wishes. Here Where You Wish will provide a space for internal dialogue and reflection. As the installation is in a heavily-trafficked public library, attending participants will contribute to the interactive aspects of the installation. Additionally, Wilks has plans to utilize and honor the objects others leave in the space by publishing a book, which will be a literary and visual documentation of what Kansas City is wishing for in 2018.

Obviously since Here Where You Wish is in a public space, leaving behind your grandmothers broach is not encouraged if your heart is intent on getting it back once the installation is complete. People may feel connected to certain objects and take them with them. This is not necessarily the goal here, but it may happen, and the Library nor anyone involved in the project can be held responsible for missing objects. Items left should hold some emotional weight with the individual but not to the degree that letting it go with a wish would cause regret.

The objects at the end of the project will be repurposed respectfully, and possibly a part of a more permanent installation in a public space.

There is also the vulnerability of writing down a wish, and people may not want their wish shared in a book; there will be verbiage at the installation that lets people know these are anonymous wishes and to not add information that you would not feel comfortable being published, such as a name. There is something beautiful though, in letting such a vulnerable thing as a wish, be shared with the world, because for every wish there are thousands of people wishing the same wish.

There will be verbiage explaining that objects such as weapons, alcohol, drugs, and food are not welcomed to be placed upon the altar.
Ryan Wilks will be coming in twice weekly to ensure that these requests are fulfilled as will library staff.

[Produced by Stevie Wonder under the name “El Toro Negro” to circumvent Motown’s refusal to allow him to produce the record for Epic. Minnie Julia Riperton-Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), known professionally as Minnie Riperton, was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single “Lovin’ You” and her five-octave coloratura soprano. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the “Queen of the whistle register”. Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. Lesley has been volunteering at 90.1 FM for nearly three years, and has served on the Board of Directors for two of those years. She is originally from Vienna, Virgina has worked in Washington DC, and Atlanta. Lesley spent two years teaching English as a Peace Corp Volunteer in Uzbekistan, worked on small water conservation in Hubli, India, observed presidential elections in Guinea, and obtained two Masters Degrees from the University of North Carolina and the Fletcher School (Tufts). Lesley currently works as a Senior Sector Analyst at Water.org based here in Kansas City.

Betse Ellis is originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Music and a Bachelors of Arts in English, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She has been playing the Violin for over 40 years, with over 20 years playing fiddle and also worked as a teacher of music. Betse was one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed and internationally known band, The Wilders. Betse has released two solo records, and now is recording and performing with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Clarke Wyatt, as Betse & Clarke. Their debut album, “River Still Rise” was in our Top Ten, of The 116 Best Recordings of 2016, and they have just released a new full length recording on cassette called Tunes We Like. [Released as a cassette of fiddle tunes featuring Betse Ellis on standard & cross-tuned fiddles, Clarke Wyatt on banjos & guitar, and some selections with the Brushy Creek String Band. Recorded by Wyatt live with no overdubs at home in KCMO. The instrumental collection highlights traditional Ozark tunes, learned from early string band recordings of the 1920s and from later Ozark heroes such as Bob Holt and soon to be 101 year old Violet Hensley. Seneca Square Dance is from Fiddlin’ Sam Long, recorded in 1926 for Gennett Records. Long is said to have been the first Ozark fiddler recorded. Many who play the tune today use a different chord progression than was originally recorded by Long. Betse & Clarke used Long’s beautifully simple progression. With Betse on standard fiddle, Clarke on standard G banjo, Brett Hodges on guitar, Alex Mallett on bass.]

Today’s show is our 703rd consecutive weekly show. Three weeks ago we celebrated our 700 show, representing 1406 hours of radio, 10,000 hours of preparation, nearly 2000 guests, and over 15,000 songs, from thousands of musical artists.

We have made it our mission to mix musical genres, playing with themes, diversity, equality, free speech, connecting artists and venues and listeners and communities. Wednesday MidDay Medley has proudly endeavored to help tell the story of our growing Kansas City area music scene, “The Midcoast Sound,” as we like to call it. We have dedicated a majority of our programming to New & MidCoastal Releases.

We’ve happily presented new formats in radio, with our popular, “A Story In A Song” series, and our special shows featuring: Apocalypse Meow, The MidCoast Takeover, Middle of The Map, The Crossroads Music Fest, The Outer Reaches Festival, The Lawrence Field Day Fest, and our annual tribute shows to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., David Bowie, Iris Dement, Pioneers of Punk, Visual Art, The Spoken Word, Gay Pride, Civil Rights, and our inteviews with Tommy Ramone, Iris Dement, Laurie Anderson, Lily Tomlin. To say we’ve been inspired by the KC music scene, is an understatement. In just this last year, we’ve played from over 100 local releases of 2017. The KC music community is fueled by a collaborative and generous heart that is beating in so many of the artists I’ve met while doing this show. I am inspired by the women who created radio on 90.1 FM long before me: my friend April Fletcher who know plays bass professionally in Los Angeles, and my friend Anne Winter, who left us in 2009, and reminded us how we’re all connected. I’m inspired by the diverse , intelligent, motivated, listeners, looking for place on the dial, where they can connect to the amazing stories and music and voice of our community.

10:35 – Interview with Kathryn Golden of Porchfest KC

PorchFest KC

The 4th Annual PorchFest KC, will be happening this Saturday, October 14, from Noon to 6:00 PM, featuring 150 bands performing on 47 front porches in the neighborhoods of Valentine, Roanoke, and Volker. Music is acoustic or near-acoustic and spans six hours.! A dozen food trucks will be available throughout the festival area. This is an all-ages, alcohol free event. Joining us to share details of Porchfest KC is Kathryn Golden who grew up in rural north-central Missouri. After college, she worked in New York City, then moved to Kansas City, and then, St Louis, and San Francisco, where in 14 years, she worked for a number of tech startups in project management, and co-founded a non-profit, all-ages jazz performance space in Berkeley, where kids could jam with, and open for, adult acts. She also owned a neighborhood grocery market. Since returning to Kansas City, Kathryn has launched a wintertime storytelling series at the Pilgrim Chapel, and she is the founder of PorchFestKC, a community music festival that takes place on front porches, in midtown neighborhoods.

Kathryn Golden says, “My deal is this…. I love to CREATE things. I love community building. I love seeing people have a great time around something new. I love creating opportunities for great stuff to potentially happen, and being as creative and non-conventional as possible in doing so. I love music. So I put those together for PorchFestKC.”

After a business trip to San Francisco, she decided she needed to live there, and on her 32nd birthday she woke and drafted her resignation notice, spent two weeks selling most of what she owned, and moved — not having a job to go to was just an inconvenience. Over the next 14 years, she worked for a number of tech startups in project management and/or customer-facing roles, as well as a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley.

In addition, she co-founded a non-profit, all-ages jazz performance space in Berkeley, where kids could jam with, and open for, adult acts — mostly around “out” or avant garde jazz. She also owned a neighborhood grocery market, which seemed very logical having never even worked in retail.

Her final role before returning to Kansas City was in helping develop demonstratives (graphics) for large white-collar crime trials — many of them boring tech-related trials. However there were a few really awesome exceptions: The Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf, the overturn of California’s Prop 8 same-sex marriage case, and a trial against Tyson Foods for unfair treatment of an immigrant worker. While there, she also partnered with Oakland School District to create a dozen libraries in Oakland’s elementary schools.

This year’s PorchFest KC features 150 bands, on 47 porches, in the Valentine, Roanoke, and Volker Neighborhoods

All performances are 60 minute sets. Performances are acoustic or near-acoustic. The goal is to be heard to the sidewalk, not down the street.

This year’s PorchFest KC also features for the first time: Blues Bands, Reggae Bands, and a 14 piece Classical Ensemble

11. Pixies – “Monkey Gone to Heaven”
from: Doolittle / 4AD – Elektra / April 17, 1989
[1st single from the band’s 2nd studio album. Formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band comprised Black Francis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, backing vocals) and David Lovering (drums). The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist; she was replaced the same year by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016. Doolittle was the Pixies’ 1st international release,. Doolittle has continued to sell well in the years since its release, in 1995 it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album has been cited as inspirational by many alternative artists, while numerous music publications have ranked it as one of the most influential albums ever. A 2003 poll of NME writers ranked Doolittle as the second-greatest album of all time, Rolling Stone placed the album at 226 on its list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” Pitchfork ranked it as the fourth best album of the 80s.]

11:15 – Interview with Kent Shelton

The Midland

The Midland Theatre at 1220 Main Street, in downtown Kansas City originally opened a a giant grand cinema, in 1927, named Loew’s Midland Theatre an opeated until 1961. Over the years, the theatre has been known by various names including: Saxon Theatre, Midland Stadium where boxing matches were held, Midland 1-2-3 Theatre, and Midland Theatre. In 2007, AMC and the Cordish Company formed a partnership to undertake a multimillion-dollar renovation of the historic venue. Since reopening in 2008 the venue was called The Midland by AMC. In 2013, AEG Live, the Cordish Company and Arvest Bank announced a multi-year naming rights partnership to the Midland Theatre. The venue’s name officially became the Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland in September, 2013.

In March of this year Kent Shelton moved his family from the Rocky Mountains of Denver Colorado to the Missouri River Valley of Kansas City, where Kent assumed his position as General Manager of the Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland Theatre. Before moving to Kansas City Kent was Manager at AEG Presents Rocky Mountains, The Ogden Theatre and The Bluebird Theatre in Denver, Colorado. Kent joins us to share information about upcoming shows and events at the Midland as well as The Truman, KC’s newest venue.

This year The Midland is celebrating 90 years as a working venue.

Among the major changes made in the redevelopment, the main-level seating rows were removed and replaced with a tiered open floor plan that allows for cabaret-style tables and chairs, or standing room for general admission events. The Midland’s exterior marquee was restored to its original 1927 appearance.

The five level office portion of the theatre that faces Main Street was converted into a mix of bars, lounges, and administrative space. According to the Cordish Company of Baltimore, the developer of the project, all changes meet historic preservation guidelines as required by state and federal governments.

Denver to Kansas City

Ogden Theatre is where I first saw Jonathan Demme’s film Stop Making Sense a critically acclaimed 1984 concert film, documenting the Speaking in Tounges tour of Talking Heads shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983, as the group was touring to promote their new album Speaking in Tongues. The movie is notable for being the first made entirely using digital audio techniques. The band raised the budget of $1.2 million themselves.

Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Kent grew up in the suburbs of Denver and studied Performing Arts at University of Northern Colorado.

Since May of 2014 Bill Sundahl has served as 90.1 FM KKFI’s Special Events, Volunteer, Underwriting Coordinator. Prior to that he was owner of Spice of Life Productions. For more than a decade he has produced the Crossroads Music Fest, the Spring Dance, The Donkey Show, and many more great Kansas City events. He is also a working musician, playing bass and singing in the Starhaven Rounders. Bill was honored with Urban Hero Award from the Kansas City Downtown Council in 2007 and has won two Pitch Music Awards. He’s also on the Advisory Board of the Midwest Music Foundation. Bill joins us today to share details about KKFI Collaborations, Friday June 30, at 8:00 PM at The Folly Theatre.

Seven sets of arts organizations will perform a series of original, spectacular, and unique collaborative artistic creations, live on the world famous Folly Theater stage. KKFI will also record the performances and for an Audio CD to use in future fundraising efforts.

The night begins with a VIP Reception in the Folly Board Room with appetizers and cocktails between 6pm and 7pm. The On-Stage portion of the night will begin at 7pm with a panel discussion on the nature of collaboration in todays artistic world. Kansas City based producer, and musician and keyboard player, Desmond Mason is originally from Los Angeles. He went to Southeast High school and studied History and Higher Education at UMKC. Desmond has worked at Park University, and the American Jazz Museum. Desmond is a versatile performer and composer, who desribes his music as “firmly rooted in KC Kazz, R & B, gospel, and hip-hop music and strives to be something that the audience can feel in their spirit.”

Derick Cunigan is a singer, songwriter who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He studied broadcasting at Northwest Missouri State University. He has worked for KMBC Channel 9, Steel City Media and KBEQ, KFKF, and KCTV Channel 5.

Singer songwriter Ivøry Black has been busy this year playing Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library. Ivøry Black plays the Kauffman Stadium, July 1, before the 1:15pm Royals home game. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivøry moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivøry moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. On June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, “Ready Get Set.” Ivøry is now currently in the process of writng and recording a debut full-length album, to be released in early 2018. Ivøry Black joins us to share new songs including, “Family Tables” that will be released as a single in August. Ivøry Black plays Revolution Records, on Friday July 7. The new album is being recorded in Ivøry’s home studio, a dream made possible by the management skills of Klaartje Van Lue, who took the opportunity to guide Ivory’s career.

Anna Selle is a very busy person. She is staff Photographer at Playlistplay, she works for for The Record Machine, and currently serves as Program Associate at The Literacy Lab. She has worked for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the educational department and volunteered with Americorps, Anna Selle grew up in Kansas City and studied English at Truman State University. Anna Selle is the co-founder Editor at HearQueer, a new print + digital publication featuring interviews, reviews, stories about queer identifying musicians with portions of proceeds going to local organizations working to protect and advocate for the queer community.

Anna has brought along her friend and co-founder of HearQueer, Bill Dickey who serves as Managing Editor of Hear Queer. HearQueer launches on June 30, at Mills Record Company featuring Erica Joy and Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type.

5. Crocodiles – “I Like It In The Dark”

[4th studio album by noise pop/indie pop band from San Diego, CA. The group was formed in 2008 by core members Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell after the break-up of their former punk bands Some Girls and The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. Brandon Welches also played in an early incarnation of Dum Dum Girls and he is married to frontwoman Dee Dee Penny. The album was produced by Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes in Los Angeles, California. Guests on the album include Gregg Foreman of Delta 72 and Cat Power, soul singer Afrodyete of Breakestra as well as Welchez’ brother, jazz musician Josh Welchez.]

[In September 2010, Crocodiles released an instrumental song, “Kill Joe Arpaio”, referencing the controversial anti-immigrant Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Arpaio heard the song and responded using twitter, “Msg for the San Diego band ‘Alligators’ who wrote new song called ‘Kill Joe Arpaio’: BITE ME,”. Arpaio also referenced the song during an appearance on Phoenix TV channel KPHO, saying “I’m a little concerned about the music, where kids can get this type of music. I think it sends a bad message. I understand freedom of speech, but there has to be a line of threatening a law enforcement official.” Crocodiles responded via Spin Magazine saying “Maybe if the song was called ‘I’m Gonna Kill Joe Arpaio,’ he’d have a case but what we are attacking is the attitudes and policies he represents. In reality, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that his much-deserved heart attack comes soon; the world can always use one less racist.” ]

6. Superchunk – “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo”

[10th studio album from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, indie rock band consisting of singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. Formed in 1989, they helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. Their energetic, high-velocity style and do-it-yourself ethics were influenced by punk rock. The band released a string of full length album’s and compilations throughout the 90’s. Members McCaughan and Ballance founded the successful independent record label Merge Records in 1989 as a way to release music from Superchunk and music created by friends, which has expanded to include artists from around the world like Arcade Fire and The Magnetic Fields.]

10:30 – Interview with Idris Raoufi of The 816 Bike Collective

Idris Raoufi is a co-founding member of the 816 Bicycle Collective a volunteer run organization working to rescue, repair and redistribute bicycles. The collective wants to increase the bike community to promote alternative transportation that is healthy, inexpensive, and with zero emissions. The Kansas City Bicycle Federation currently owns the building at 518 E. 31st St. intended to house The 816 Bicycle Collective non-profit community bicycle shop, as well as other like-minded individuals and organizations.

Idris Raoufi discussed the programs of 816 Bike Collective: The List and WRENCH

All bikes are built up by WRENCH mechanics and are double checked for safety. The goal of the list build-up is to provide a bicycle that rolls, stops and is safe to ride; for any further maintenance or upgrades, our shop is here to assist with those needs. Each WRENCH volunteer has a dedicated shift on either THURSDAY or SATURDAY and attends WRENCH meetings. WRENCH volunteers help patrons of the collective with bike needs during any shop hours and often are responsible for opening, greeting, running and/or closing the shop. WRENCH volunteers have a say in how the shop is run, serve as both student and teacher, have an overall understanding of how the shop works, and basic mechanic skills.

The 816 Bicycle Collective purchased outright three under-loved buildings at the corner of 31st and Cherry. This affords us the unique opportunity to take ownership of our future and implement the programming we’ve always dreamed of. In addition to the new home of The 816, these buildings will provide space for other likeminded non-profits and businesses to sustain the operations of the buildings.

Last week we said goodbye to a friend, a musician, an activist, a singer, a songwriter, an organizer, a founder, a rock & roller, a warrior, a voice, a beauty, a daughter, a wife. The following is Abigail Henderson’s Obituary, as published in the KC Star on August 31, 2013, with additional notes, and 4 songs, from 4 bands, Abigail played with from 2001 to 2013.

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, 36, died Aug. 27, 2013 at her home in Kansas City after a five-year battle with cancer. Abigail was born April 8, 1977, in New York. In 1984, she moved to a suburb of Detroit. In 1999, she moved to KC to live with her mother, Carol Pfander, who preceded her in death. Abigail attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in English. While at UMKC, she was co-founder and co-director of the Association of Women Students. The association sponsored several events, including an appearance by Angela Davis, a performance of “The Vagina Monologues” and a “Take Back the Night” vigil. After college, she also helped organize “Beauty Slays the Beast,” a benefit for political-activism and voter awareness. While in college, Abigail started playing guitar. In 2001, she started her first band, Trouble Junction.

In the fall of 2003, singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson and guitarist Chris Meck got together and started writing songs. They confessed that their first songs were “pretty country…pretty… cow-punkish.” Mike Stover wrote on facebook that, “Trouble Junction had to end so that Abigail could start the next chapters.” In 2003, Abigail started the band The Gaslights with Chris Meck, who would later become her husband. The Gaslights recorded five albums, releasing three of them.

As we approach our 500th show this fall, I remember my friend Anne Winter, who inspired me to volunteer in community radio and so much more. Anne was instrumental in nudging me into working on many great projects and shows. I started doing this radio program the same year The Gaslights released their debut recording. Prominently displayed on the New Releases shelf at Recycled Sounds, Anne’s record store, it was Anne Winter who encouraged me to check out The Gaslights first release, “Midwest Hotel.”

The Gaslights toured & recorded from 2004 to 2008. After 9 bass players, 3 drummers, 2 vans, 1 dead moose, 1 impromptu marriage, countless tours of the United States, 3 tours in Europe, 3 full length releases. The Gaslights ended.

In early 2008, Abigail was diagnosed with Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer. In response to her battle with a health insurance company and daunting medical bills, she and others in the music community founded the Midwest Music Foundation, a group that sponsors health care programs and provides financial relief to local musicians who have suffered a health care crisis. Since 2009, the MMF has distributed $30,000 in health-care grants. It also co-sponsored the Well Women’s Clinic, which provides free screenings for female musicians. Abigail also founded Apocalypse Meow, an annual fundraiser for the MMF.

Doing this radio show has taught me about the growing & fertile KC Music Scene. Abigail was always fostering the community, as a songwriter & performer, but also as an organizer. A frequent guest on WMM, she came on the air to talk about Apocalypse Meow & The MidCoast Takeover. On one of her earliest appearances, Abigail told me,”We think of this as OUR radio show.” She was right. In fact, 90.1 FM, belongs to all of us. She knew that.

In 2010, Abigail & Chris formed: Atlantic Fadeout with Dutch Humphrey on bass, vocals; and Amy Farrand on drums. Abigail had lost her hair, but not her power. Anyone who saw Atlantic Fadeout live, could not deny the spirit in her performance. Like opera, you felt the song, because Abigail imprinted her lyrics into your heart, with the strength of her voice.

The new band was created from the ashes of The Gaslights, combined with the super powers of Amy Farrand who plays bass in American Catastrophe (amoung several other bands) and Dutch Humphrey who sings lead in Cherokee Rock Rifle.]

Abigail had undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy treatments. In January 2012 her cancer reappeared and she tried an experimental treatment. As reported in the Kansas City Star, “She took a last-ditch experimental drug and recovered, but not unscathed. The cancer had paralyzed one of her vocal cords. Still, she did not give up her music. Instead, she and Meck started Tiny Horse, a folk duo that would grow into a full band.” She told The Star last October, just days before the 5th annual Apocalypse Meow, “I used to nail notes to the walls, I can’t do that anymore. I had to find a different path. It’s like a guitar player who loses fingers: You can still play, you just have to figure out how to do it differently.”

In addition to her mother, Abigail was preceded in death by her father, Frank Henderson, who died in 2007. Abigail is survived by her husband and many friends and music fans in the KC and Lawrence area. A memorial in her honor was held Sat, Aug. 31, at Unity Temple on The Plaza. After the services, a wake was held that lasted until the sunrise.

Writer, actor, musician, artist, teacher, singer, songwriter – Vi Tran was born near Saigon, Vietnam and raised in southwestern Kansas. He began performing as a toddler in the refugee camps of southeast Asia. Other refugees took pity on the young (and literally starving) artist, giving him what food they could spare. Vi Tran considers his life an open-ended refugee story and All-American tale, full of landlocked sailors and broken lovers; loss and discovery; but most of all, hope. Vi has appeared in Theatres all across Kansas City as an actor, has also become a big part of the Kansas City Music Scene and is on the verge of releasing his debut full length recording “American Heroine.”

Remembering MLK

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Wednesday MidDay Medley celebrated the life of human rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Born Jan. 15, 1929. MLK led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King’s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination thru civil disobedience and non-violent means.

By the time of his death in 1968, Dr. King had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 198I.

A Birthday Tribute to Iris DeMent

Now those songs are part of her brand new release that includes a total of 12 new songs. It is her first full-length release of original songs since 1996. The new record has been critically acclaimed by the music press on both sides of the Atlantic. Iris DeMent was our special guest on our October 10, Wednesday MidDay Medley.]

Wednesday MidDay Medley celebrated the Birthday of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas. She was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, Iris was exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

After a series of jobs as a waitress and typist, Dement wrote her first song at the age of 25. She played open-mic nights in Kansas City, until she moved to Nashville, in 1988, and met producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract.

Dement made her recording debut in 1992, when her independent label offering, “Infamous Angel” won critical acclaim. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record’s word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros. records, which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993.

We featured the music from all five of Iris DeMent’s full length recordings, plus her additional work with Greg Brown, John Prine, John McCutcheon, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Nancy Griffith, Steve Earle, and Gary Kirkland.

[Produced by Jack White of The White Stripes and Racontuers. It was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time, Lynn was 69 and White was 28. The title refers to Lynn’s origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album was the most successful crossover music album of Lynn’s 45-year career. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Lynn won: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for her duet with White.]

[A TV music variety show that ran for 58-episodes from June 7, 1969 to March 31, 1971 on ABC. It featured many folk/country musicians of the time: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard, James Taylor and Tammy Wynette. It also featured other musicians such as jazz great, Louis Armstrong, who died 8 months after recording the show. Recorded at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, then home of the Grand Ole Opry. The first show featured Joni Mitchell, Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw, Fannie Flagg and Bob Dylan. The show included a “Country Gold” segment that featured legends never seen on network TV such as Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys. Cash refused to cut the word “stoned” from Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, he stood by his Christian faith “despite network anxieties”, and persisted in bringing on Pete Seeger whose anti-Vietnam song on another network had “caused a firestorm.” He premiered his Man in Black song on an episode filmed at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University’s campus. The show was dumped in 1971 as part of ABC’s so-called “rural purge,” which also claimed that network’s The Lawrence Welk Show.]

[In 1968 country superstar George Jones witnessed a fight between Tammy Wynette and her husband Don Chapel. At Jones’s urging, Wynette and her daughters drove away with him. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set.”]

[Live performance for Austin City Limits taped in 1983. Loretta Webb was the second of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. Growing up with such humble roots had a huge effect on Lynn’s life and heavily influenced her music as an adult. Her autobiography describes how, during her childhood, the community had no motor vehicles, paved roads, or flush toilets. She married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, known as “Doo,” on Jan. 10, 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray – by the time Loretta was 18, and in her early 20s she then had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. No stranger to controversy, Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, prior to The Dixie Chicks, including “Rated X,” about the double standards divorced women face, “Wings Upon Your Horns,” about the loss of teenage virginity, and “The Pill,” lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife’s anguish at the loss of a husband to war. It has been included in live performances during the current Iraq War.]

Iris DeMent represents that place in the road, where Country and Folk music merged with honest stories, of working class people, not afraid to tell the truth about the times they are living through. Iris DeMent grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

7. Johnny Cash – “Ring of Fire”

[Co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at #1 on the charts for 7 weeks. “Ring of Fire” refers to falling in love – which is what June Carter was experiencing with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources claim that June had seen the phrase, “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” underlined in one of her uncle A. P. Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry. She worked with Kilgore on writing a song inspired by this phrase as she had seen her uncle do in the past. In the 2005 film, Walk the Line June is depicted as writing the song while agonizing over her feelings for Cash despite his drug addiction and alcoholism as she was driving home one evening. She had written: “There is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns”. Cash claims he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by “Mexican horns”. Four years after the song was released, Carter and Cash were married which Cash states helped to stop his alcohol and drug addictions. Cash’s daughter, Rosanne has stated, “The song is about the transformative power of love and that’s what it has always meant to me and that’s what it will always mean to the Cash children.]

Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.” A nude photograph of Joni Mitchell was included on the inside cover of the original LP and is included in the CD booklet. The photograph shows the singer from the rear and was taken from a considerable distance; she is shown standing on a rock and staring out at the ocean. This created some controversy at the time.]

In the 2002 Iris DeMent did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. I remember when Iris asked us if it was okay that she have a musician friend open the concert for her, we agreed because Iris was donated her talent to the cause of community radio. And then she told us that this musician friend was Greg Brown, who at this point was know all over the country, but had never before played KC.

Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in East KC.

Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most respected singer-songwriters working in music today. He started singing professionally at the age of 18 organizing early folk concerts in New York City, Portland, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In the 1980s, he worked and toured extensively as musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program. He also founded his own record label, named Red House Records after a home in which he lived in Iowa.

Greg Brown has release over 30 recordings and has allowed much of his music to be used to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes. His songs have been performed by: Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Iris DeMent and Joan Baez.

The musical score for the Coen Brothers film “True Grit” was created by Carter Burwell. Much of the music was adapted from old public domain gospel hymns. The very last song heard in the film, during the closing credits, is the only piece on the soundtrack that includes vocals. The song was originally written by Elisha A. Hoffman and Anthony J. Showalter, and originally published in 1887. Copyright is now Public Domain. Iris also included an earlier version of this song on “Lifeline” her 2004 independently released album of protestant gospel hymns, she grew up hearing her mother sing. “Lifeline” does include one original song called “He Reached Down” was this song inspired by a sermon delivered by Rev. Sam Mann.

In his review for WHYY’s Fresh Air Entertainment Weekly Music editor Ken Tucker wrote: “Iris DeMent possesses one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power. Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, ‘There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.’ And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”

Her new album “Sing The Delta” has received glowing reviews from the UK publication UNcut, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and was in many Top Ten Lists of KC music lovers, including being #1 on our list of The 112 Best Recordings of 2012.

A personal note:

I first met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinko’s at West 39th & Rainbow Blvd. in the early 1990s. Iris came in to copy a few of her press clippings and on another visit to make her wedding announcements. Later I discovered her as a singer on Late Night with Conan O’Brien where she performed her song “My Life.” A few weeks later I ran into her at the old Classic Cup Restaurant in Westport. I was nervous and wanted to approach her to let her know how much I loved her music, but she approached me and asked, “How do I Know You?” Our paths crossed again and we bumped into each other at a Patti Smith concert in Lawrence.

Iris performed her song, “Wasteland of the Free,” on stage at The Uptown Theatre to open for Michael Moore, because it was one of his favorite songs.

Iris DeMent played three songs for one of our Big Bang Buffet shows back in 1999, at one of the very first “First Fridays,” at a big show we did at the Hobbs Building during Culture Under Fire. Iris took the stage after an incredible dance performance by David Ollington that ended with his body being absent of all clothing. Iris also volunteered her talent for a benefit for Friends of Community Radio in 2002, at Unity Temple on the Plaza. In 2004, Iris and Greg Brown opened for Amy Goodman (of Democracy Now!), at Community Christian Church, in a benefit for KKFI. Amy is also a huge fan of Iris and Greg. Iris helped raise over $10,000.00 in both benefit concerts she gave for community radio. Iris never took a penny.

A big part of the reason Iris did all of these things, was because Anne Winter was her friend, and Anne asked Iris. Anne was a true mentor who gently challenged us all to rise above life’s mediocrity, and DO something. She challenged us all. But she also LOVED helping to make her friend’s dreams come true. Having Iris play on stage with us at a Big Bang Buffet show was one of those moments for me. Asking me to serve a stagemanager at the Michael Moore show at the Uptown Theatre, was another. Inviting me to sing old time hymns with Iris and Anne, and Ike Sheldon of The Wilders, at Iris’s River Market loft was another. Anne helped to make all of these connections. Anne even went on tour with Iris at one point, to support her friend.

Thank you Iris! …and thank you Anne! I love you both so very much!

Case #1 – 90.1 FM is a grassroots movement, a radio station created by the people in the village. 35 years ago those people created a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization called, The MidCoast Radio Project and for ten years volunteers worked to raise the funds to buy a signal, a tower, and create a physical station with studios and offices, to serve the community. In February of 1988, KKFI began broadcasting over the airwaves…

Those first radio shows were prerecorded on reel to reel tape in the basement of Tom Crane’s house on Pennsylvania Ave, and then delivered to the tower site and transmitter, where they were played. Tom Crane was there in the beginning and has played a vital role in KKFI’s development over the years.

Tom Crane talked about the early years, charity bingo, the reel to reel recordings.

Tom also talked about Anne Winter who hosted a KKFI show as “Little Orphan Annie” and produced Kansas City’s very first Punk show on the airwaves.

Grammy Nominated Iris DeMent has performed at all over the world, at Carnegie Hall, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, and the Grand Ole Opry. She was born in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to KC to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, she first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights. In 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. She made her recording debut in 1991 /1992, with her release: “Infamous Angel.” Iris has collaborated w/ John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, John McCutcheon, Randy Scruggs, Tom Russell and Kansas City bus driver Gary Kirkland. Iris married singer-songwriter Greg Brown on November 21, 2002, while she still lived in KC. They now live together in Iowa. Last week Iris DeMent released her new recording “Sing The Delta” on Flariella Records, that includes 12 new songs. It is her first album of all new material in 16 years, since her fantastic 1996 release, “The Way I Should.” Iris’ new release “Sing The Delta” is already receiving great critical acclaim, and she is currently on the road singing her new songs.

Last year on 11-11-11 Iris and Greg Brown performed together here in Kansas City in a benefit for St. Mark Early Childhood and Family Development Center, That night she surprised me when she only performed one or two songs that I had heard before. Instead she shared with the packed crowd at the Folly, many of her new songs that ended up on this record. Iris discussed the process of writing the songs and getting them recorded and produced in the studio.

I read where Iris has said that she “learned about music from people who didn’t use music as entertainment.” That her “parents lived very on the edge. They had a gazillion kids and came from an area where people live on the edge. They used music as a life source. That music had to come through for them and make them feel like they could get up on Monday and keep going.” She said that “You think that’s one of the reasons why you didn’t write for so long. I learned about music as a life line. I feel like that’s the kind of task I’m trying to take on every time I try and write something. I’ve got to make somebody want to keep going. That’s what music was about.”

Iris DeMent has a long history of doing benefit shows for groups like 90.1 FM. In 2004 she and Greg Brown opened for Amy Goodman at Community Christian Church. In the 2002 she did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio and invited Greg Brown to open the concert at Unity Temple, then several months later she and Greg were married in a private ceremony in the offices of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church here in KC.

Kansas City is where Iris started her musical career, singing in coffeehouses. Iris talked about how she loves that we claim her as one of our own, here in Kansas City.

The liner notes of Iris DeMent’s new record talks about St. Mark Church and how the Church took her in during a dark time of her life. She found inspiration at St. Mark, inspiration from the people of the church and also from the pastor of the church, Rev. Sam Mann who she originally heard over the airwaves of 90.1 FM KKFI, and met at an anti-war rally at the fountains near 47th and Broadway near the Country Club Plaza.

The photographs for Iris DeMent’s new album were taken by her stepdaughter Pieta Brown, all except for one photograph that is in many ways a symbol of this recording, that was photographed by her daughter, Dasha Brown. Iris talked about the photo and it’s special meaning.

The new recording contains many songs about her family, and especially her mother, who died last year at age 93. Iris DeMent’s mother sings on her debut “Infamous Angel” and we definitely feel her presence on “Sing The Delta.” Iris writes that her mother dreamed of being a professional singer, and how she asked Iris one day, “Ain’t you got tard yet of trapesin’ All over the country?”

I read a review of “Sing The Delta” that starts off by referencing Iris DeMent’s song, “Let the Mystery Be” from her debut “Infamous Angel.” The reviewer connected that song to her new 5th release, 20 years later, with new lyrics and stories that continue to examine the “religious doctrine on life and death.” The reviewer also references Iris DeMent’s 2004 release “Life Line” which was a collection of traditional protestant hymns.

In reading many of the reviews of Iris DeMent’s new recording, I was struck by the personal relationship Iris has with her fans, who fell in love with “Infamous Angel” and have followed her through these past 20 years, and this period where she has recorded with so many other artists, toured consistently, but also was busy with her family, husband, and daughter. That because her songs were so honest and heartfelt, and special, her fans accepted and understood why it might have taken some time for this new recording of 12 new songs.

We are in the middle of our Fall Fund Drive here at 90.1 KKFI. Iris has had many connections to this radio station. We mentioned Sam Mann, who at one time hosted a radio program on 90.1 FM. Another person who helped build this station was our mutual friend Anne Winter. Iris talked about how she met Anne Winter.

Leonard Bernstein called her “The Bible of Opera.” In 2006, Opera News wrote of her: “Nearly thirty years after her death, she’s still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists.” She was born in New York City on December 2, 1923 and she on September 16, 1977, at 53. Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and versatile opera singers of the 20th century. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Tony and Emmy Award winning Playwright Terrence McNally, who has written about Maria Callas in several of his plays including The Lisbon Traviata, put his muse, Maria Callas center stage, for his play of 1995, “Master Class,” that focuses on Maria Callas after she has headlined every major opera house, and accepts an invitation from The Juilliard School to conduct a series of sold-out master classes for a select group of young professionals. Master Class won both the 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play.

Spinning Tree Theatre has created it’s own new identity through the musicals and plays it has produced of these past two years.

In “Master Class” Maria Callas, is glamorous, commanding, larger-than-life, caustic, and surprisingly drop-dead funny. Alternately dismayed and impressed by the students who parade before her, she retreats into recollections about the glories of her own life and career. Included in her musings are her younger years as an ugly duckling, her fierce hatred of her rivals, the unforgiving press that savaged her early performances, her triumphs at La Scala, and her affair with Aristotle Onassis. It culminates into a monologue about sacrifice taken in the name of art.

In 2004, the Kinsey Sicks were joined by actor/singer/designer Jeff Manabat, who is responsible for Trixie’s inordinate glamour and soaring counter-tenor, as well as the entire group’s hot couture. [Mentored by the great Bobby Watson at the UMKC, trumpeter Hermon Mehari, saxophonist William Sanders, pianist John Brewer, bassist Ben Leifer, and drummer Ryan Lee were the winners of the 2008 Origin Records / Gene Harris Jazz Festival Competition, beating out 10 other very original groups from across the country, the quintet opened for Roy Haynes’ ‘Birds of a Feather’ band at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival and were awarded a deal to record this album of original music. The Midwest Music Foundation presents the release of Midwestern Audio Vol. 1, September 23rd. This is a two-CD collection of musicians from Kansas City and surrounding areas. The compilation was assembled by Brenton Cook of Midwest Music Foundation. The compilation will first be available to the public on Sunday, September 23rd, 7pm, at recordBar (1020 Westport Road, KCMO). The recordBar will be hosting the CD release party, which will feature six artists appearing on the compilation. The lineup includes Gemini Revolution, Reach (with jazz act Diverse), Grand Marquis, Antennas Up, and Everyday/Everynight. Brenton Cook joins us Live from Montreal where he is attending the Pop Montreal Festival.

The compilation will also be available for digital download after Monday, September 24th at 12:00pm at: music.midwestmusicfound.org
