Caroline Lee & Barry Lee

We lost one of our own at KKFI as Caroline Lee passed away early in the morning on Wednesday, April 18th, surrounded by her family. Caroline was married to Barry Lee. Together they have been a constant presence in the area music scene and on the radio. Caroline was an early volunteer and organizer for 90.1 FM. When the station went the air in 1988 Caroline hosted and produced “Watusi Rodeo,” (one of the first alternative country radio shows). When that program ended its run, she was often a guest-host on, Signal To Noise. Barry Lee will present a radio memorial for Caroline on May 4th at 9:00 pm. There will also be a concert at Knuckleheads Saloon in July in her memory.

In honor of Caroline’s passing I would love to play a song from Cris Williamson’s 2001 release “Ashes,” 12 original songs about transformation, love, and the Phoenix rising. Helping Cris with the vocals is her friend Bonnie Raitt.

Kansas City based singer songwriter John Keck joins us to share music from his new EP, Out In The Cold – 12th Street Singles. This is John’s first release since his 2013 Jack Moon Sessions, which was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis.

John Keck, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Out In The Cold – 12th Street Singles. This EP represents the first studio release in 5 years and is the first of 3 songs in a planned series of work. “Out in the Cold” a reflection on our society. These 3 songs were written while living on historic 12th St. in downtown KCMO.

Produced, engineered, & mixed by Chase Horseman at Element Recording Studios.

John Keck’s mom was a teacher.

Missouri Queen.

John’s words – This is an ode to my single mother and the advice she’s given me. I wanted a short biographical song that allows me to give a frame of reference for where all of my songs come from and this was born. My Grandfather flew a B-29 in WWII called the “Missouri Queen”. There were Japanese fighters with floodlights on their noses that would chase the B-29s and light them up so they could be shot down. She told me that he would say “Don’t get caught in the light”, which is advice that she passed down for me to interrupt My Dad was a pilot and always gone when i was growing up, I would look up at the stars and confuse them with taillights of airplanes. Hence the shooting stars. When my parents separated, my mom returned to the farm where my grandparents lived and it became an integral part of my life. When I pushed my mom for more advice for the song she repeated what she has always told me, which is this story. “A Persian king asked the wisest man of his country for advice that would always be true, and he replied ‘This too shall pass’”

John Keck

We are talking with Kansas City based singer songwriter John Keck joins us to share music from his new EP, Out In The Cold – 12th Street Singles. This is John’s first release since his 2013 Jack Moon Sessions, which was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis.

John Keck will be in concert with John Statz, and Kelly Hunt, Saturday, April 28, at 7:00 pm at Pilgrim Chapel, 3801 Gilliam Rd, KCMO.

“Song For Mother”

John’s words – The last piece began after the shooting in Ferguson, MO. In following weeks I heard an interview with a woman who was protesting, I remember her saying “We’re just trying to keep our sons alive in the streets, don’t you understand, why can’t people understand”. Her voice stayed with me, haunting me as I watched and read about shooting after shooting. Eventually I dreamt a conversation with a mother who has been confronted all of her days with the death of their child. I woke up and sang this song to myself in the middle of the night. At first she is hesitant to say anything, but then can’t stop herself, going through grief, confusion, sadness, anger, frustration and finally feeling hopeless, pointless. The faint piano represents the child voice/spirit and the violin is speaking for the mother.

John’s words – Just before recording I spoke to the violinist, Shannon O’Shea, I told her what the song represented and asked her to play a solo with that represents the physical struggle when you’re sobbing so hard you can’t control your breath.

John Keck will be in concert with John Statz on Friday, April 27 at Replay Lounge in Lawrence. John Keck will be in concert with John Statz, and Kelly Hunt, Saturday, April 28, at 7:00 pm at Pilgrim Chapel, 3801 Gilliam Rd, KCMO.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi

Gamelan Genta Kasturi with Balinese Guest Artists, under the direction of I Ketút Gedé Asnawa, featuring his wife Putu Oka Mardiani Asnawa, and two daughters Yunirika Asnawa & Yonitika Asnawa performing several dances with the music.

Mr. Asnawa has been faculty at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in conjunction with the Robert E. Brown Center For World Music since leaving Kansas City in 2006. He and his family maintain an active schedule performing, teaching and promoting Balinese Cultural Arts.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi have been Studio Residents as part of the Charlotte Street Foundation/Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, premiered a large scale collaborative work in 2011 featuring his Patrick Alonzo Conway’s original composition Angels & Demons at Play through Urban Culture Project and ArtSounds.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments as a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together – instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighboring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 34 provinces w/ the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the S. of the island.
Patrick Alonzo Conway went to Bali.

11. Cris Williamson – “Motherland”
from: Motherland / Wolf Moon Records / November 14, 2017
[30th release from legendary singer songwriter. Produced by Julie Wolf.]

11:34 – Interview with Cris Williamson

Cris Williamson

Legendary singer songwriter Cris Williamson recently released her 32nd album, Motherland. Cris Williamson is a brilliant songwriter, poet, pioneer, and renegade who recorded her first album in the 1964 when she was sixteen. Cris Williamson’s groundbreaking album, The Changer and the Changed, was released in 1975, and became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time, selling over 500,000 copies. The sales of these records allowed the independent label Olivia Records to release music from a whole new movement of diverse female artists, all overlooked by mainstream music. Cris Williamson helped to forge a historic movement in the male dominated music industry, fostering the creation of completely female owned record labels, touring companies, and music festivals. The movement, (often misclassified as a genre) was about opening the doors, and smashing glass ceilings, for so many women to follow, who had been shut-out of the game, simply because of their gender. Cris seemed to shrug all of that off with an earthy sexy confidence that makes audiences swoon for her. She wrote music for people desiring to find their own identities in modern folk and pop music. No one had ever courageously written and performed so many brilliant full length albums of songs by women, about women, for women. At the same time, these songs are universal to us all. These songs were all impeccably and professionally produced and have stood the test of time and could go up against any of the songs by Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, or James Taylor. Only difference is mainstream radio and television has almost completely ignored Cris Williamson. Despite this injustice, through her amazing voice, and spirit, and open heart, Cris has helped make the world a better place for all female and LGBTQIA artists who follow the path she cleared. We owe her for that. Cris Williamson has written and recorded hundreds of beautiful, incredible songs, while remaining one of our most underrated singer songwriters of the last 50 years. If you’ve never seen her in concert, now is your chance! Cris Williamson will be in KC for the first time in 10 years, at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church , 4501 Walnut, on Saturday, April 28, at 7:00 pm.

Cris Williamson thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

On Motherland we just heard the title track, a song Cris wrote. All of the other songs on the new record are written by her musical contemporaries of the past 50 years: Joni Mitchell, Eliza Gilkyson, Laura Nyro, Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan, Jackson Brown, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen & Jennifer Warnes. We’ve heard you cover songs from Joni Mitchell & James Taylor on earlier releases.

Cris Williamson was part of NPR Music’s 2017 feature on The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women with her record – The Changer and the Changed: A Record of the Times (Olivia Records, 1975)

Cris Williamson

From NPR Music’s The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women (7/24/2017):
“I’m kind of hand-carried, person to person,” Cris Williamson told the journalist Ben Fong-Torres in 1981, when asked how people discovered her music. “There are secretaries who’ve told me they can’t get through the day without running home during lunch hour and playing it.” Such was the impact of the Wyoming native’s voice, clear as a mountain stream, and her empathetic songwriting, which made this album one of the best-selling independent releases of all time and the cornerstone of the feminist “women’s music” movement. Produced by Williamson and featuring dozens of the era’s finest women musicians — including guitarists Meg Christian and June Millington, bass virtuoso Jacqueline Robbins and vocalists Holly Near and Margie Adam — Changer blended pop, country and folk elements in songs that were both cuttingly intimate and generously communal. (A few featured large choruses inspired by the sing-alongs women’s music artists inspired in concert.) Williamson’s own keyboard playing ranged from contemplative to dance-floor funky. The clear and confident lesbian desire behind love songs like “Sweet Woman” and “Dream Child” made Williamson a sex symbol; her philosophical side made Changer a record of spiritual growth, too. Speaking what at the time remained mostly unspoken in pop, this album truly changed lives. —Ann Powers (NPR Music)

Cris Williamson

From http://www.smithsonianmag.com:
Ginny Berson belonged to the Furies collective, a radical, separatist household that published journals, taught classes, and advocated communal living apart from men. Judy Dlugacz, 20, had postponed law school to pursue lesbian activism and was interested in finding an economically workable means of serving the women’s community. Performing as a folk musician at area clubs and coffeehouses, Meg Christian was eager to meet other women songwriters like Cris Williamson—who had released her first album in 1964 at age 16.

When Williamson came on tour to D.C., Christian and Berson not only arranged to bring other women’s music fans to the concert; in a gesture that changed history, they also scheduled a follow-up interview on Georgetown University’s “Radio Free Women” program. On the show, Berson spoke about how she and other members of the Furies collective were searching for a bigger project to invest in— “something that’s for women, by women, and supported by women’s money”—and Williamson responded with a simple yet provocative suggestion, “Why don’t you start a women’s record company?”

It has been over 10 years since Cris Williamson has been back to Kansas City.
Cris will be playing at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church Kansas City, Missouri, 4501 Walnut, Saturday, April 28, at 7:00 pm.

Cris is also doing a show in St. Louis on April 28, at MCC of St. Louis

http://www.criswilliamson.com

Never one to rest on her laurels, to which Cris replied laughing, “What Laurels?” In the last 17 years Cris have released 11 full length albums (a few of those were double albums). That works out to be a new album every year and half. Considering the process of writing, recording, mastering, raising the funds to produce and launch a new record, we asked Cris to share what she might be currently working on for the next release. She told us that she has a back log of new songs she has written and collected and from those songs she is working through what she may release next. She has been playing with the idea of releasing an album of American standards, but held back because so many other musicians have been doing this.

(Note: The laurels that are being referred to when someone is said to ‘rest on his laurels’ are the aromatically scented Laurus Nobilis trees or, more specifically, their leaves. The trees are known colloquially as Sweet Bay and are commonly grown as culinary or ornamental plants. Rest on his laurels. The origins of the phrase lie in ancient Greece, where laurel wreaths were symbols of victory and status.)

Throughout the last 15 years Cris Williamson has also conducted Songwriting Workshops.

This summer Cris will be traveling to Norway with Olivia Cruises, and returning to National Women’s Music Festival, and in the fall, attending Women’s Week in Provincetown.

Cris Williamson’s groundbreaking album, The Changer and the Changed, released in 1975, became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time. As William Ruhlmann of AllMusic writes: “The Changer and the Changed was to women’s music what Michael Jackson’s Thriller was to the music industry in general in the mid-’80s, an album that sold far beyond the perceived size of the market, more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. Eventually, it reportedly sold more than 500,000 copies. from: There’s a Riot Going On / Matador Records / March 16, 2018
[15th album from band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. Since 1992, the lineup has consisted of Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals). In 2015, original guitarist Dave Schramm rejoined the band and appears on their f14th album, Stuff Like That There. Despite achieving limited mainstream success, Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintains a strong cult following. They chose the name “Yo La Tengo” (Spanish for “I have it”; or referring to a female-gender object or person, also “I’ve Got Her”) in an effort to avoid any connotations in English. The name came from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, “I got it! I got it!” only to run into Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, “¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!” instead. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by left fielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish and had missed a team meeting that proposed using the words “¡Yo la tengo!” as a way to avoid outfield collisions. After getting up, Thomas asked Ashburn, “What the hell is a Yellow Tango?”]

[On April 28 the band embarks on month-long European Tour, followed by dates in the states, then back to Europe.]

4. Keaton Conrad – “Cinnamon”

New & MidCoastal Releases + Doby Watson
+ Witch Jail + Kadesh Flow

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Universal / Dec. 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme]

2. Beach House – “Dark Spring”
from: 7 / Sub Pop Records / Expected May 11, 2018
[th studio album from American dream pop band from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2004. The band consists of vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist, keyboardist, and backup vocalist Alex Scally. Unlike with previous records, Beach House took their time with the recording process of this album. Instead of one long studio session, they recorded when inspired by batches of songs, which resulted in five mini-sessions over the course of eleven months. All of the songs on the album began in the duo’s home studio in Baltimore, and were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles. The band stated that their goal throughout the recording process of the album was “rebirth and rejuvenation,” continuing: “We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically, we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the album’s feel.” The band also stated that 7 didn’t have a producer in the traditional sense, which let the ideas drive the creativity and not any one person’s process. The band’s touring drummer since 2016, James Barone, plays on the entire record. They also worked with Peter Kember, known by the stage name Sonic Boom, who helped “in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection. Thematically, 7 often deals with “the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny.” The album’s title itself simply represents it being the duo’s seventh studio album, saying they “hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album,” although they later mentioned that the number 7 represents some interesting connections in numerology, which further inspired them in naming the album as such. The band cited the “societal insanity” during 2016 and 2017 as a deep influence on the creation of the record, elaborating: “there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and perfect moments, was an endless source.”]

3. The Get Up Kids – “Maybe”
from: Kicker EP / Polyvinyl Record Co / To Be Released June 8, 2018
[Matt Pryor on vocals & guitars, Jim Suptic on guitar, Rob Pope on bass, James Dewees on keyboards, Ryan Pope on drums. On March 29, 2018, Polyvinyl Records announced on their Instagram account that they had signed the band and that new music will be coming soon. The Get Up Kids are an American rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. Their second album Something to Write Home About remains their most widely acclaimed album, and is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the second-wave emo movement. However, like many early emo bands, The Get Up Kids sought to dissociate themselves with the term, as it was considered dismissive to be seen as an “emo band.” The band departed heavily from their established style with the release of their 2002 album On a Wire, which saw the band take on a much more layered, alternative rock sound. Years later, guitarist Jim Suptic even apologized for having the influence they did on many of the modern third-wave emo bands, commenting that “[t]he punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now … If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” Due to internal conflicts, the band broke up in 2005. Three years later, the band reunited to support the tenth anniversary re-release of Something to Write Home About, and soon afterward entered the studio to write new material. In early 2010, the band released Simple Science, their first release in six years, followed in 2011 by the full-length There Are Rules. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams.]

[On June 14 The Get Up Kids will launch a 20 city month long US Tour]

4. Shy Boys – “Keeps Me On My Toes”
from: Shy Boys / High Dive Records / January 17, 2014
[On April 3, 2018 it was announced that Shy Boys had been signed to San Francisco based, national label, Polyvinyl Records. Hailed as “The Beach Boys on Robitussin”, Shy Boys (brothers Collin & Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little & Ross Brown) were bred in the dankest basements of Kansas City, MO as a group of ill-fitting squares in a scene of punks and weirdos. We find these great friends now, still living & loving in KC, trading instruments while creating melodic, happy-sad tunes to make your heart swell. Shy Boys’ sophomore album will arrive later this year on Polyvinyl Record Co., bringing with it big, melancholic vocal harmonies of a past’s present, amidst these strange and bittersweet future daze. This was the bands debut release. Brothers Collin Rausch, Kyle Rausch, and friend and roommate at the time Konnor Ervin, created this record. Collin and Kyle’s father was a High School band director and music teacher. Konnor Ervin was the lead singer and songwriter of The ACBs, where Kyle also played drums. The 10 song release had two singles premiered by Stereogum. “Keeps Me On My Toes” was a song Collin wrote in 15 minutes while his girlfriend was in the shower. Wednesday MidDay Medley has been a big fan of The Shy Boys and all of the ACBs recordings. In 2011 we started playing songs from The I’ms, a duo made of up Collin and Kyle, who posted 6 of their self recorded songs on their facebook page. We included this informal release in our Top Ten of The 111 Best Recordings of 2011. 3 of the songs from The I’ms recordings ended up being re-recorded for Shy Boys. The album was recorded at West End Studio, over two-weekends.]

[On Saturday, April 14 Shy Boys launch their 15 city US tour at Replay Lounge, in Lawrence Kansas, with Cocordion, Fraydee Cat, and Fullbloods.]

In 2011, he was offered a contract from Sony which he rejected, referring to the $250,000, 5 album, 2 option and one milestone option deal as “insane.” Mac Lethal has also managed a Tumblr feed called “Texts from Bennett”, in which he posts text message conversations between himself and his cousin Bennett. Instead of attending college, as Richard Gintowt wrote for The Pitch in 2009, “Watson spent his young-adult years touring the country with a guitar and a box of Clif Bars, one for lunch, then a real meal for dinner, and a bunch of sad and beautiful homespun songs that are as sparse and haunting as those of Leonard Cohen or Jason Molina.” In 2009 Doby released Twenty Two. In 2013 He released Watson & May an EP in collaboration with Margo May that was produced & engineered by Lennon Bone. Double Shift Music released Doby’s album Live-In Son in 2014, and the EP collaborative: Swearengin, Watson & May in 2016. More info at: http://www.dobywatson.bandcamp.com

10. Doby Watson – “In Rows” (Live)
This song was on Doby’s album: Live-In Son / Double Shift Music / October 17, 2014
[For the record: Watson performed the songs live, while being recorded, in Ross Brown’s basement in KCMO. The next day, also in Brown’s basement, Grant Buell (Rhodes), Jerad Tomasino (vocals) and Hannah Jensen (viola), having never practiced with each other or Watson, improvised their parts over the live recordings of Watson. Richard Gintowt added additional vocals at his home in San Francisco, CA. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings & auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. Mastered by Cory Schulz in Milwaukee, WI.]

We are talking with Singer-Songwriter Doby Watson who has just released his new EP, Family Mattress Deluxe, on February 23, 2018, on Error Records.

From Doby’s own words: “When I was a kid I played guitar in some hardcore bands. When I found myself without a band, at the end of high school, I started trying to sing and write songs. Falling on the moniker “Boo Hiss” (something a class mate of mine said in place of swear words). I put some songs online and got asked to be on a small DIY label from Ohio called Tract Records. Around that time, I befriended touring DIY artists’ such as Viking Moses, Real Live Tigers, Manipulator Alligator and a young man named Joseph Murphy (who was in tons of bands), as well. Through these connections I was encouraged to tour and became involved in the Midwest’s various DIY communities, making countless friends.”

“Rather than go to college, I chose to focus solely on DIY touring and releasing music (for much of it taking my good friend, then KC native, and amazing songwriter, Austin Swearengin with me for most of these tours). ”

“Around that same time, I made an attempt to be taken more “seriously”, dropped my moniker and unsuccessfully released a mini-album under my own name. After some rather chaotic and unorganized tours for the album, I became depressed and disillusioned with music. I set music aside as a priority, moved to Lawrence, KS and tried to assimilate to what I thought was a ‘normal’ life. ”

“I went to college, got a day job, and wound up generally hating life. This new ‘normal’ path inevitably didn’t work out for me – I moved back in with my parents and held various dead end jobs and sank deeper into a depression, completely ceasing to make any music.”

“I (Doby) performed the songs live, while being recorded, in Ross Brown’s basement in Kansas City, MO. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings and auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. The results were mastered by Cory Schulz in MIlwaukee, WI. ”

The next day, also in Brown’s basement, Grant Buell (Rhodes), Jerad Tomasino (vocals) and Hannah Jensen (viola), having never practiced with each other or Watson, improvised their parts over the live recordings of Watson. The songs sat for some time until they were picked up by Ryan Brewer, who added electric guitar, field recordings & auxiliary percussion while he mixed the songs in Champaign, IL. Ten Thousand One have watched each other get married, have kids, graduate from college, and grad school, create businesses, but through it all they have always carved out time for the band, for that weekly rehearsal, to play music together.

The band has received critical praise for their live performances, and the band’s mix of “alternative to thrash, hardcore to blast beat metal, even dirty blues thrown in.” Their Facebook page refers to: metal riffs and punk beats. They currently see their music as developing a “Southern Rock” sound.

Ten Thousand One were chosen to play RockFest in 2016, the year Disturbed and Seether played the fest. 11:04 – Interview with Lauren Flynn, Aubrey Callahan and Tiffany Smith

Lauren Flynn, Aubrey Callahan and Tiffany Smith make up the Kansas City band, OLIVIA FOX who released their self titled debut EP, on June 2, 2017. OLIVIA FOX followed that up with two new singles: “Slow Motion” released December 14, 2017, and “Utah” released February 16, 2018. OLIVIA FOX call their sound Folk/Pop and it’s a unique marriage between classic folk instrumentation, vocals, and harmonies to modern programmed beats and synth pads.

Block, in the Power and Light District, 1330 Grand Blvd. St. KCMO, with: Hembree, Brandon Phillips and The Condition, The Noise FM, Fathers, Mess, Y God Y, The Dear Misses, Faintheart, Hot Suede, and Keaton Conrad. More info at http://www.weareoliviafox.com

Lauren Flynn, Aubrey Callahan and Tiffany Smith thanks for being with us on WMM.

I met the women of Olivia Fox at Folk Alliance International in the hospitality room of the KC Collective Showcase.

OLIVIA FOX is a relatively new band, they been together for a little over a year and a half now, and were all brought together through their manager David “DJ” Lee.

David “DJ” Lee is also the manager for Second Hand King and Tour Manager for Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear.

Aubrey Callahan, Lauren Flynn, and Tiffany Smith with Manager – DJ Lee of OLIVIA FOX on the April 4, 2018 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Lauren Flynn, Aubrey Callahan and Tiffany Smith talked about how they ended up with the name OLIVIA FOX, after days and days of searching and talking about names.

Mark shared that his impression of the name is, “strong, creative and dashing women.”

Mark also referenced OLIVIA as the name of the first all women run record label, Olivia Records, a collective founded in 1973 to record and market women’s music. It was the brainchild of ten lesbian-feminists living in Washington, D.C. who wanted to create a feminist organization with an economic base. In 1973, the collective put out a 45 with Meg Christian on one side and Cris Williamson on the other. Without making themselves dependent on any high-profile person, they made $12,000 with that 45, enough to put out singer Meg Christian’s first record, and soon after, Cris Williamson’s groundbreaking album, The Changer and the Changed, in 1975. During a radio interview in Washington, D.C. in 1973, Williamson suggested that a record label aimed at gay women would be a good idea. The independent label Olivia Records was founded the next day. Olivia Records release of Williamson’s The Changer and the Changed became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time. Eventually, it reportedly sold more than 500,000 copies, which would make it a gold album, although it has not been certified as such by the RIAA. (That does not disprove the sales estimate, however. Albums are not certified automatically; a record company must request certification and pay for an audit.)”

“Utah” was released February 16, 2018, after “Slow Motion” that was released December 14, 2017, and after their self titled debut EP, OLIVIA FOX came out June 2, 2017. For the recordings the band has been working with Tyler Banks who engineered, mixed and mastered the recording and co-produced the music with David DJ Lee. Tyler also played Drums, Keys, and Programming

Lauren has been the primary songwriter for these first recordings, and also has worked with DJ Lee on the vocal arrangements.

OLIVIA FOX just recently recorded a live acoustic version of their song “Woodpanels and Wine” for their tiny desk contest entry.

OLIVIA FOX performed “Wood Panels & Wine” live in our 90.1 FM Studios.

13. Olivia Fox – “Wood Panels And Wine” (LIVE)
also available on Olivia Fox – EP / OLIVIA FOX / June 2, 2017

Wood Panels & Wine

It’s a cold dark place
They’ll never see my face
They’ll never hear a word I say
You like it that way

They’ll never find me out
I got myself locked down
All my intentions hit the ground
You got me so strung out

It’s like you got a gun
And you press it to the side of my head
I say what you want me to say
Then you leave me for dead

Breathe it in it just feels right
Focus on a faded line
You got me all in my mind
Until the well runs dry

It’s like you got a gun and you
And you press it to the side of my head
I say what you want me to say
Then you leave me for dead

Oooh

What you so confused about
Why you always bring me down
You got some nerve to call me out
But, I know your secret

It’s like you got a gun
And you press it to the side of my head
I say what you want me to say
Then you leave me for dead

It’s like you got a gun
And you press it to the side of my head
I say what you want me to say
Then you leave me for dead
Leave me for dead

Oooh

11:32 – Interview with Ryan Wilks, Sean Prudden and Tim J. Harte

Ryan Wilks

Ryan Wilks is a Kansas City based artist who’s work has explored gender issues, queer erotica, femininity and sexuality. His new exhibit, Here Where You Wish, is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, 2018. Wilks is constructing a large public altar in the Central Library with a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way being crafted by renowned artist Ari Fish. Tim J Harte is composing ritual based sounds/music for the event. The 40 square feet altar is being constructed by Sean Prudden and Ryan Wilks, to house the objects that people bring to the piece.

Also joining us is Sean Prudden who joined Ryan in creating the giant altar. Sean is a musician, performance artist, artist, builder of altars, designer, carpenter, future voice over artist and radio announcer.

Tim J Harte

Tim J Harte

Tim J. Harte is a musician, composer, co-founder of the Kansas City record label, Mother Russia Industries. He makes music using Sega Genesis, Dungeons and Dragons, math and several hard working laptop computers. Tim J. Harte is currently studying composition at UMKC’s Conservatory of Music. He just recently composed music and conducted a 7 piece ensemble for Trench Warfare, a theatrical performance presented last Saturday evening, January 13, at the National World War I Museum and Memorial J.C. Nichols Auditorium that had scenery designed and built by Sean Prudden.

Ryan Wilks, Sean Prudden, and Tim J. Harte, thanks for being with us again on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Renowned artist Ari Fish is creating a transformative temple-like labyrinth entry-way for Here Where You Wish. Ari Fish is an artist based out of the middle west of the United States of America. Her work focuses on ideas of transcendental experience for the benefit of the human condition. Fish’s most recent work consists of multi media constructions of temporary temples, meditative video work and sound, and intuitive prayer-driven sigil drawings. Fish has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally; showing in Italy, Germany, Japan, and Canada, She is a recipient of the prestigious Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Award of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as an Arts KC Inspiration Grant recipient. Ari Fish received her BFA with an emphasis in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute where she was awarded the Top Twelve Competitive Scholarship to study. Fish is currently the Academic and Career Advisor, as well as the Continuing Education Instructor for college bound high school students at the Kansas City Art Institute. She is the artist in residence at KSHB Studios, Kansas City, Missouri.

Here Where You Wish is an immersive public installation coming to the Kansas City Public Library, Central Library location at 14 W. 10th St. on April 6, 2018.

The altar will be up for 3 months and will grow substantially in its aesthetic as people leave behind a wish on paper and/or an object.

Wilks will be rolling up the paper wishes and tying them to hundreds of feather sculptures rotating above the altar, stirring the energy of the wishes. Here Where You Wish will provide a space for internal dialogue and reflection. As the installation is in a heavily-trafficked public library, attending participants will contribute to the interactive aspects of the installation. Additionally, Wilks has plans to utilize and honor the objects others leave in the space by publishing a book, which will be a literary and visual documentation of what Kansas City is wishing for in 2018.

There is also the vulnerability of writing down a wish, and people may not want their wish shared in a book; there will be verbiage at the installation that lets people know these are anonymous wishes and to not add information that you would not feel comfortable being published, such as a name. There is something beautiful though, in letting such a vulnerable thing as a wish, be shared with the world, because for every wish there are thousands of people wishing the same wish.

There will be verbiage explaining that objects such as weapons, alcohol, drugs, and food are not welcomed to be placed upon the altar. The objects at the end of the project will be repurposed respectfully, and possibly a part of a more permanent installation in a public space. Ryan Wilks will be coming in twice weekly to ensure that these requests are fulfilled as will library staff.

Ryan Wilks, Sean Prudden and Tim J. Harte, thanks for being with us again on WMM

Here Where You Wish, is an immersive public installation opening at the Kansas City Public Library, at 14 West 10th Street, First Friday, April 6, at 5:30 pm.

from: Heaven’s Only Wishful – Single / Don’t Guess / February 2, 2018
[Artist, Singer-Producer, multi-instrumentalist, born and raised in Toronto. MorMor writes, records, and produces most of his own work. He tells pigeons and planes, “A lot of my inspiration stems from wanting to share a perspective of Toronto that I feel hasn’t been represented,” he says. “I’m glad Toronto is getting a lot of attention right now, but my experience of the city that has shaped me isn’t really part of the story yet.” he goes on to say, “I always felt different from the other kids at school. I went through a really hard time because I was the kid who always hung out with a wide variety of people. I kept searching for kids like me, but it never happened. In the end it gave me some good perspective. I was a pretty rebellious person when I was young. I had a problem with authority. I was reluctant to take orders if I didn’t believe in the cause. I might be the only kid who got suspended in the first grade. Music was something that I could escape through.]

10:32 – Interview with Howard Iceberg & Rich Hill

Howard Iceberg & Rich Hill on the March 28, 2018 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Legendary Kansas City Singer Songwriter – Howard Eisberg records and performs under the name Howard Iceberg. He is one of the most prolific and poetic songwriters of the Kansas City music scene. He has written hundreds, possibly thousands of songs. Howard has done all of this while also leading a distinguished career as an immigration attorney, and he has donated much of his time and music to valuable projects that serve our community. Howard Iceberg began performing in coffeehouses in the late 1980s with fellow area independent songwriters Scott Hrabko and Iris DeMent. Over the past three decades he has released countless CDs, and recorded multiple collections of songs. In 2011, Howard Iceberg & The Titanics released a seven CD, box set, of 106 new songs, all instant classics. In 2014 he released a collection called Spring 2014, on his birthday May 9, 2015 he released, Smooth Sailing which included 13 new songs. In September 2016 Howard released a 2 CD set of 26 new tracks called, “Kansas City Songs.”

Larry Kopitnik, for The Pitch writes, “Pianist-vocalist Rich Hill has a personal sound steeped in the rich jazz, blues and gospel traditions of his Kansas City hometown. His keyboard style is grounded in the long tradition of jazz piano from ragtime to stride, bebop and modern jazz. Depending on the song, he might play something that sounds like Fats Waller, then something with a kind of Bill Evans or Chick Corea feel, followed by a tune suggesting Ray Charles’ blues-tinged earthiness. His success entertaining audiences with his keyboard and vocal talents while maintaining a certain standard of artistry is a notable accomplishment proven by continued demand for bookings.”

Howard Iceberg and Rich Hill share music from Howard Iceberg & The Titanics’ new album, Netherlands. Howard Iceberg & The Titanics play an Album Release show at The Ship, 1217 Union, in the West Bottoms, Thursday, March 29, 7-9pm, w/ 3 sets of music & special guests. Howard Iceberg calls this album, “More songs from another time and place. This time around, a story album. Not mine, but that of spirits both close and far. Help from Durrell and Hemingway. The stories fleshed out by some of KC’s jazz cats, not to mention the usual suspects. I keep my eyes open and my mouth shut (heh heh). Imagining I am seeing the arc of love and the arc of life more clearly with the years. Waiting for a train.”

Care Beyond the Boulevard was conceived by Jaynell (KayKay) Assmann after she noted the number of homeless people coming into the hospital where she worked as a nurse. As soon as she became certified as a Nurse Practitioner, her first goal was to establish an outreach to the urban poor and especially the homeless. She worked as a volunteer at the Micah Ministry food kitchen and in 2016 while working at Family Health Care, KayKay developed Care Beyond the Boulevard. We see 10-25 people each session (most Monday evenings) and provide care for urgent and chronic health needs. In addition we go on the streets into homeless encampments, providing healthcare directly to the homeless one other night per week, seeing between 7-15 patients. Additional services are provided as necessary through Family Health Care’s Southwest Boulevard clinic. More info at: http://www.carebeyondtheboulevard.org

13. Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark — “The New Stone Age”
from: Architecture & Morality / Dindisc-Virgin / November 8, 1981
[3rd studio album by British electronic music group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. English electronic music band formed in Wirral, Merseyside in 1978. Spawned by earlier group The Id, the outfit is composed of co-founders Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals), along with Martin Cooper (various instruments) and Stuart Kershaw (drums); McCluskey is the only constant member. OMD released their influential debut single, “Electricity”, in 1979, and gained popularity throughout Europe with the 1980 anti-war song “Enola Gay”. The band achieved broader recognition via their album Architecture & Morality (1981) hailed as the band’s seminal work, the album received critical acclaim and has appeared on various “best albums” lists; The Morning News named it the finest record of 1981, and “the blueprint for synth-pop”. The album also became a commercial success, selling over 4 million copies by 2007. The record spawned three international hit singles, which sold more than 8 million copies combined.Critic Hugo Lindgren wrote that OMD have cultivated a “legacy as musical innovators”. In February 2007 a Scotsman journalist said: “If Kraftwerk were the Elvis Presley of synth-pop, then Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark were its Beatles.” In 2008, American publication The A.V. Club noted that McCluskey and Humphreys were “often labeled as the ‘Lennon-McCartney of synth-pop’.” In a 2008 piece on OMD, The Quietus magazine editor John Doran called them “the only Liverpool band to come near to living up to the monolithic standards of productivity and creativity set in place by the Beatles”, and asserted: “Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark are not one of the best synth bands ever: they are one of the best bands ever.” Veteran BBC DJ Simon Mayo described OMD as “the fathers of electronic music in this country [the UK].”]

[Annie Hart is a keyboardist, songwriter and vocalist. She primarily composes and performs in the band Au Revoir Simone. In 2017, she released a solo album entitled Impossible Accomplice. She has contributed vocals to other artists’ projects and appeared on the 2017 series of Twin Peaks. Annie Hart was born on Long Island, New York. She has been in other groups including Uninhabitable Mansions, featuring members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and collaborated as a composer with French band Air for their soundtrack to Les Voyages Dans La Lune. In 2017, she began releasing music under her own name apart from Au Revoir Simone and embarked on a world tour. She has appeared on screen along with the other members of Au Revoir Simone in Episodes 4[8] and 9[9] of the 2017 series of Twin Peaks. Her song, “Hard To Be Still,” appeared on episode one of the Netflix series, Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts. Au Revoir Simone is an American dream pop/synth-pop band from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2003. The group is composed of Erika Forster (vocals/keyboard), Annie Hart (vocals/keyboard/bass) and Heather D’Angelo (vocals/drum machine/keyboard). The band’s name comes from a line Pee-wee Herman says to a minor character (named Simone) in Tim Burton’s 1985 film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.[1] The group’s musical inspirations were compared by the band’s European label, Moshi Moshi Records, to “a dutifully mined musical thrift store”; these diverse influences include Modest Mouse, Stereolab, the Mountain Goats, Louis Prima, Pavement, the Beach Boys, Björk, Broadcast, Belle & Sebastian, David Bowie, Bee Gees and Billie Holiday.]

15. Nina Simone — “Seems I’m Never Tired Lovin’ You”
from: Nina Simone and Piano! / RCA Victor / 1969
[Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, on February 21, 1933 and died in France on April 21, 2003. Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. She worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. The sixth child of a preacher’s family in North Carolina, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. Her musical path changed direction after she was denied a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. “Simone said she later found out from an insider at Curtis that she was denied entry because she was black.” To fund her continuing musical education and become a classical pianist, she began playing in a small club in Atlantic City where she was also required to sing. She was approached by Bethlehem Records, and her rendition of “I Loves You, Porgy” was a hit in the United States in 1958. Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue, and 1974. Her musical style arose from a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music, in particular with influences from her first inspiration, Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied with her expressive jazz-like singing in her characteristic contralto voice. She injected her classical background into her music as much as possible to give it more depth and quality, as she felt that pop music was inferior to classical. Her intuitive grasp on the audience–performer relationship was gained from a unique background of playing piano accompaniment for church revivals and sermons regularly from the early age of six years old.]

16. Sabina — “Won’t Let You Break Me”
from: Toujours / Bar None Records / March 24, 2014
[The singer of avant-garde electro-punk outfit Brazilian Girls, Sabina Sciubba is a multi-lingual artist whose music transcends both space and time. Across no less than five different languages, her straight talking debut solo album Toujours is a compelling, intimate, narcotic dreamscape you might call The Parisienne Velvet Underground and Nico, with a surprising sense of humour. “I photographed myself naked, sitting on a closet, like a French dresser,” she laughs describing the DIY semi-animated video for the album’s title-track. Paying homage to Pythonesque surrealism it sees Sciubba riding a donkey whilst playing a ukulele, wearing nothing but a smile. “The actual photos are ridiculous. My older son was looking at me like, ‘oh no, she’s lost it’.” Equally adept at casting opinion as well as writing songs, Sciubba is a modern day heroine, skilled in the art of elegant seduction. Cut from the same rebellious cloth as other uncompromising femme fatales Patti Smith or Madonna, whilst channelling the visual impact of Grace Jones and Bjork (one billowing outfit appeared to be a ventilation shaft, made of crepe), she is a fearless woman, whose passion for speaking her mind – in German, Italian, French, Spanish, and English – only enhances her sophisticated lo-fi pop music. Born in Rome to German and Italian parents, raised in Munich and Nice, and discovered in Hamburg at age 19 by virtuoso guitarist Antonio Foricone before relocating to New York to lend her stunningly sultry vocals to Brazilian Girls (incidentally one girl – Sciubba – and no Brazilians), the new album was written on guitars in Paris and has found Sciubba reunited with Brazilian Girls producer Frederick Rubens.]

17. Jacqueline Taieb — “7 Heures Du Matin”
from: 7 Heures Du Matin – Single / Impact / 1967
[Jacqueline Taïeb was born November 9, 1948 in Tunis, French protectorate of Tunisia. She is a French singer and songwriter of Tunisian descent. She achieved her greatest success as a pop and yé-yé singer in France in the 1960s. Taïeb arrived in France from Tunisia with her parents at age eight. She began composing songs with her guitar at 12 and in 1966 was discovered by a talent scout while Taïeb was singing with friends. After arriving in Paris, she was signed to Impact Records and released the song “7 heures du matin” in 1967, which became her biggest French hit. She was subsequently voted Best Newcomer at the inaugural Midem music festival in Cannes for the song. The song was about a bored teenage girl who doesn’t wish to go to school that day and fantasizes about rock and roll stars such as The Who and Paul McCartney. In the early 1970s, Taïeb took a break from recording. In 1988, she penned the song “Ready to Follow You”, which became an international hit for American singer Dana Dawson. The single sold more than 500,000 copies, and the album sold 300,000 in France alone.]

18. Miley Cyrus — “Twinkle Song”
from: Saturday Night Live / October 6, 2015
[Originally recorded for her 5th studio album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, which was independently released on SoundCloud on August 30, 2015. Opting for an album relying less on computerized elements than her previous release, Bangerz (2013), Cyrus began planning the project in 2013 before Bangerz was released. Work continued into 2014 and 2015, when she befriended and began collaborating with the Flaming Lips. Without previous promotion, Cyrus announced that Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz was available for free online streaming when she hosted the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, released independently. Cyrus has promoted the album with music videos for “Dooo It!”, “Lighter” and “BB Talk”, performances of “Karen Don’t Be Sad” and “Twinkle Song” when she hosted Saturday Night Live, and the Milky Milky Milk Tour in November and December 2015. Miley Ray Cyrus was born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992. She is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. After playing minor roles in the television series Doc and the film Big Fish in her childhood, she became a teen idol starring as the character Miley Stewart on the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana in 2006. Her father Billy Ray Cyrus also starred on the series, which aired for four seasons until 2011. Cyrus has earned five number-one and eleven top-ten albums on the US Billboard 200, including releases credited as both herself and Hannah Montana.]

19. David Bowie — “Sorrow”
from: Pin Ups / RCA Records / October 19, 1973
[7th studio album by David Bowie, containing cover versions of songs. Pin Ups entered the UK chart on November 3 1973 the same day as Bryan Ferry’s covers album These Foolish Things and stayed there for 21 weeks, peaking at No. 1. According to co-producer Ken Scott, the LP was originally conceived as “a complete opposite of [Bowie’s] other albums”, consisting of all cover songs except one original composition, and mainly turned towards the US market since “he wanted to do songs that weren’t known as well in the States as they were in England”, yet eventually the plan was dropped. Pin Ups was the first of two “1960s nostalgia” albums that Bowie had planned to release. The second, which was planned to be called “Bowie-ing Out,” would have contained Bowie covering his favorite American artists, but was never recorded. Bowie also apparently considered making a Pin Ups sequel: he had compiled a list of songs he wanted to cover, some of which showed up on his later releases of Heathen (2002) and Reality (2003). In the album booklet, Bowie, writing in his own hand, describes Pin Ups as: “These songs are among my favorites from the ’64–67′ period of London. / Most of the groups were playing the Ricky-Ticky-Scene club circuit. / Some are still with us. / Pretty Things, Them, Yardbirds, Syd’s Pink Floyd, Mojos, Who, Easybeats, Merseys, The Kinks. / Love-on ya!”The woman on the cover with Bowie is 1960s supermodel Twiggy in a photograph taken by her then-manager Justin de Villeneuve. It was shot in Paris for Vogue magazine, but at Bowie’s request was used for the album instead. “Sorrow” was originally recorded by The Merseys.]

20. Bert Kaempfert — “Wonderland By Night”
from: Wonderland By Night – Single / Decca Records / August 1960
[“Wonderland by Night” (German title “Wunderland bei Nacht”) is a popular song by Bert Kaempfert that was a Billboard #1 hit for 3 weeks, starting Jan 9, 1961. Written by Klaus-Günter Neumann with English lyrics by Lincoln Chase. It was Kaempfert’s 1st hit with his orchestra. The song featured Charly Tabor on trumpet. The original version of “Wonderland by Night” also crossed over to the R&B chart where it peaked at number five. Another cover, recorded and released by Louis Prima, also charted in the same year, reaching #15 on the Billboard charts. Anita Bryant’s version, which included orchestrations by Lew Douglas, reached #18 on the US Pop Chart. Berthold Heinrich Kämpfert, (Oct. 16, 1923-June 21, 1980), better known as Bert Kaempfert, was a German orchestra leader, music producer, arranger, & songwriter. He made easy listening and jazz-oriented records and wrote the music for a number of well-known songs, including “Strangers in the Night” and “Moon Over Naples”. Kaempfert’s own first hit with his orchestra had been in 1960, “Wonderland by Night”. Wonderland by Night, which was recorded in July 1959, couldn’t get a hearing in Germany. Instead, Kaempfert brought the track to Decca Records in New York, who released it in America in 1959 (or fall 1960); with its haunting solo trumpet, muted brass, and lush strings, the single topped the American pop charts and turned Bert Kaempfert and Orchestra into international stars. Over the next few years, he revived such pop tunes as “Tenderly”, “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”, “Three O’Clock in the Morning”, and “Bye Bye Blues”, as well as composing pieces of his own, including “Spanish Eyes (Moon Over Naples)”, “Danke Schoen”, and “Wooden Heart”, which were recorded by, respectively, Al Martino, Wayne Newton, and Elvis Presley. For Kaempfert, little may have brought him more personal satisfaction than Nat King Cole recording his “L-O-V-E”. As a producer, Kaempfert also played a part in the rise of The Beatles when he signed a Liverpool-based singer named Tony Sheridan, who was performing in Hamburg, and needed to recruit a band to play behind him on the proposed sides. He auditioned and signed the Beatles, and recorded two tracks with them during his sessions for Sheridan: “Ain’t She Sweet”, sung by rhythm guitarist John Lennon and the instrumental “Cry for a Shadow”, co-written by Lennon and lead guitarist George Harrison. Kaempfert’s recording of the Beatles, even as a backing band for Sheridan, provided an impetus to their subsequent success, even though none of the Kaempfert-recorded sides resembled the music for which they became famous. On October 28, 1961, a man walked into the music store owned by Brian Epstein to ask for a copy of “My Bonnie”, recorded by the Beatles (but, actually credited to Tony Sheridan). The store did not have it, but Epstein noted the request and was so intrigued by the idea of a Liverpool band getting a record of its own out, he personally followed up on it. This event led to his discovery of the Beatles and, through his effort, their signing by George Martin to Parlophone Records after getting clear of any contractual claim by Polydor. Jimi Hendrix included the melody of “Strangers in the Night” in his improvised guitar solo for his famous guitar-burning version of “Wild Thing” at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.]

21. Janelle Monáe — “Make Me Feel”
from: Dirty Computer / Wondaland Arts Society – Bad Boy – Epic / April 27, 2018
[Janelle Monáe moved from Kansas City, Kansas to New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Her original plan was to pursue a career on Broadway, but she soon changed her mind and returned to music. After moving to Atlanta, GA, where she met OutKast’s Big Boi, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and made appearances on Outcast’s Idlewild, where Janelle is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams”. In 2007, Monáe released her first solo work, titled Metropolis. A few months later she was signed to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records. Dirty Computer is the third studio album by Janelle Monáe. In October 2016, Monáe made her big screen acting debut in the critically acclaimed film Moonlight. Monáe also starred in the film Hidden Figures. While filming her two movie roles, Monáe remained active in music with features on Grimes’ “Venus Fly” from her Art Angels album and also the soundtrack for the Netflix series The Get Down with a song titled, “Hum Along and Dance (Gotta Get Down)”. She was also on the tracks “Isn’t This the World” and “Jalapeño” for the Hidden Figures soundtrack. In an interview with People, Monáe revealed that she was already working on her third studio album when she received the scripts for her two first acting roles; therefore, she put the album on hold. It was confirmed by Monae after “Make Me Feel” was released that Prince, with whom she collaborated on her preceding album, The Electric Lady, had worked on the single, as well as the entire album, before he passed away. This was confirmed after listeners noticed similarities between the single’s sound and the late musician’s work. Monae stated in an interview with BBC Radio 1: “Prince was actually working on the album with me before he passed on to another frequency, and helped me come up with some sounds. And I really miss him, you know, it’s hard for me to talk about him. But I do miss him, and his spirit will never leave me.” The synth groove in “Make Me Feel” was played at one of Prince’s parties years prior to its inclusion in the single, as confirmed by Prince’s DJ, Lenka Paris.]

These childhood years of colorful transience were a major influence on later work, as evidenced in songs such as “Lost in the Midway” and “Decatur Street,” among others. Spheeris had two sisters, Penelope and Linda, and a brother, Andy. After his father was murdered by a “belligerent carnival-goer,” Gypsy Spheeris moved the family to San Diego, CA. The family eventually settled in Venice, California. Gypsy Spheeris tended bar at an establishment on Main Street called The Circle. Spheeris moved to NYC in the late 1960s to pursue and develop his songwriting career. The liner notes on his debut album credit friend and fellow songwriter Richie Havens, who introduced Spheeris to Columbia Records executive Clive Davis. Davis signed Spheeris to a 4 album recording contract and his debut album was released on Columbia. Spheeris’ 1971 debut album, Isle of View, garnered a devoted following and FM radio airplay, notably for the song “I am the Mercury.” His 1973 album, The Original Tap Dancing Kid, was followed by a period of extensive concert touring. Spheeris returned to the recording studio in 1975 with The Dragon is Dancing and released Ports of the Heart in 1976. After Ports of the Heart, Spheeris had no recording contract. Except for a 1980 single, “Hold Tight,” Spheeris released no new material through a major record label. Spheeris died at the age of 34 in Santa Monica, CA, when his motorcycle collided with a van at 2 a.m. on the morning of July 4, 1984. The driver of the van, Bruce Burnside, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and felony vehicular manslaughter.[5] Hours before his death, Spheeris finished the self-titled album, Spheeris, which was produced by Paul Delph. This final album was not publicly released for 16 years. Delph would later record two of Spheeris’ songs for his final album A God That Can Dance.

23. Sinéad O’Connor — “Kyrié Eléison”
from: Faith and Courage / Atlantic / June 13, 2000
[5th full-length album by Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor. It was O’Connor’s first release in three years, her previous album being the greatest hits package So Far… The Best of Sinéad O’Connor in 1997, plus it was her first studio album in six years. O’Connor composed a majority of the tracks on Faith and Courage and production duties were shared by a variety of artists including Wyclef Jean, David A. Stewart, Brian Eno, Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler among others. The album sold 1,000,000 copies worldwide and was certified gold in Australia in 2000. As of 2014, sales in the United States have exceeded 219,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Magda Davitt was born Sinéad Marie Bernadette O’Connor December 8, 1966. She rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra. As Sinéad O’Connor, she achieved worldwide success in 1990 with a new arrangement of Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Since then, while maintaining her singing career, she has occasionally encountered controversy, partly due to her statements and gestures—such as her ordination as a priest despite being a woman with a Roman Catholic background—and her strongly expressed views on organised religion, women’s rights, war, and child abuse. In addition to her ten solo albums, her work includes many singles, songs for films, collaborations with many other artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts. In 2017, O’Connor said that she had changed her legal name to Magda Davitt.]
