At 10:15 we talk with Kansas City based singer songwriter Jaclyn Bell. In March of 2019, Jaclyn released her first full-length album, “Wanna Be Mine” recorded here in Kansas City. Jaclyn Bell released her EP “Memories” in 2018, that featured her songwriting capabilities combined with the Nashville talent where it was recorded. In March of 2019, Jaclyn Bell and her band are playing Made in KC for First Fridays on Friday, July 5th; the Bull Creek Distillery on Saturday, July 6,; and Sunset Grill on August 3.

At 10:35 members of the Kansas City based Rock & Roll trio Heavy Grams join us in our 90.1 FM Studios. Heavy Grams were formed in 2018. Members include: Jeff Wall on guitar & vocals, Calandra Ysquierdo on bass & vocals, and Dustin Mott on drums. Heavy Grams just recently released their self titled, debut EP, that was recorded at Weights and Measures Sound Lab with Duane Trower.

3. Mavis Staples – “Change”

[14th studio solo album from rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. The album’s cover features the photograph “Outside Looking In” by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden. The album was produced and written by Ben Harper. Staples & Harper had previously collaborated on “Love and Trust”, a song from Staples’ 2016 album, Livin’ on a High Note. In a statement, Staples said, “These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.” Mavis Staples has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down.]

[Raye Zaragoza was born and raised in Manhattan and moved to LA at the age of fourteen. Her mother is an immigrant from Japan and her father is of Mexican and Native American heritage. At age 6, Raye sang “You Can’t Get A Man with a Gun” from Annie Get Your Gun on national television when her father was playing Chief Sitting Bull on Broadway. She became involved in school musicals, started playing guitar at age 12, and started writing songs in her late teens. Zaragoza released her debut EP Heroine in 2015. She started to gain national attention in 2016 with the song “In The River,” protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. Raye and her brother made a video for “In The River” that included facts about Standing Rock and it received 100,000 views overnight. The song was awarded the Global Music Awards’ 2017 Heretic Award for Protest/Activist Music and the Honesty Oscars’ award for Best Song. In 2017, she independently released her debut album Fight For You. Multiple songs on Fight For You address the Dakota Access Pipeline. “Driving to Standing Rock” portrays the power of protest, specifically of the NoDAPL movement. The song “American Dream” was written in reaction to Donald Trump’s election. The album also includes love songs and songs about NYC. She cites Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Joan Baez, as influences.]

Volker Brothers Biography: The word “Volker” comes from the Germanic word “Fulc” meaning people. It is also the name of a neighborhood in KCwhere Erik Voeks & David George met. Volker Brothers are an acoustic duo that share lead vocals & background harmonies influenced by the likes of The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello to Crowded House, XTC, and The Beatles.

Voeks and George first started playing together when one would fill in with the other’s band. Whether it was Erik playing bass and singing backup in David George & A Crooked Mile or David playing guitar and singing backup in Erik Voeks & The Vague Lakes, the two realized they had a musicality in common. Stripping the band back to just the two of them on acoustic guitars enabled them to do a weeks worth of shows in Seattle. They began performing intimate shows around Kansas City, including house concerts and private events, and spreading the word on their melody driven, harmony enriched, acoustic based music. It’s not pop and it’s not folk, but a blend of the two.

Erik Voeks recently released full length album So The Wind Won’t Blow It Away in 2017 on Hanky Panky Records, a label based in Bilbao, Spain. It is the highly anticipated follow up to his 1993 album, Sandbox (Rockville Records) “A pervasively melodic collection of power-pop – a lost masterpiece” (Fresh Air KCUR). This doesn’t mean Voeks wasn’t busy. He has been a very in demand bassist in the Midwest and tours in Europe.

David George also had a recent release — three EP’s over a twelve month period. Here I Go Again, Won’t Let Go, and Lesson Of Love, with each album adding to the previous (acoustic, band, horns). George gained national attention when the Kansas City Chiefs chose his song “Hey, Kansas City!” to be their touchdown anthem in 2015-16 season. He also toured with the legendary John Fogerty, performing sold out arenas and the “late night” circuit (David Letterman, Jay Leno).

Volker Brothers have just finished recording and are releasing their first studio recording, a 5 song EP entitled Wrecking Ball. It’ll be available online digitally & physical copies at shows on June 28, 2019. The album was recorded w/ Duane Trower at Weights & Measures Soundlabs featuring a full band accompanying Volker Brother’s signature sound.

[29 year old Jessica Paige moved to Kansas City from Manhattan, Kansas, after caring for her ailing grandmother for several years. She told CJ Janovy of KCUR News. “After she passed away, I started doing music full time, recorded my album and started touring.” Jessica self-produced my first album “Sweet Nothings” with Nashville-based artists and producers. The album is a reflection of the life-cycle of a relationship; the exciting and insecure beginnings to the lamenting demise of something that was once beautiful. The single released from the album, “Beautiful Life,” is a soul-pop reflection of someone trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions of trying to rescue or walk away from a relationship, while still appreciating how beautiful it is to love, regardless of how things turnout. While working on “Sweet Nothings,” Jessica settled in to Kansas City to start working with a full band and laying the groundwork for her next album.]

8. Kelly Hunt – “Sunshine Long Overdue”

[The daughter of an opera singer and a saxophonist, Kelly Hunt was raised in Memphis, TN, and grew up performing other people’s works through piano lessons, singing in choirs, and performing theater. “It was a very creative, artistic household,” says Hunt. During her teenage years, influenced by musical inspirations as diverse as Norah Jones, Rachmaninov, and John Denver, she began writing her own songs on the piano as a creative outlet. After being introduced to the banjo in college while studying French and visual arts, Hunt began to develop her own improvised style of playing, combining old-time picking styles with the percussive origins of the instrument. “I’m self-taught, I just started letting the songs dictate what needed to be there,” she says. “I heard a rhythm in a song that I wanted to execute, so I figured out how to do it on the drum head while still being able to articulate certain notes in one motion.” After college, Hunt followed a rambling path that took her through careers in acting, graphic design, traditional French bread making, and medicine, all the while making music as a private endeavor. “I wanted to get serious about a responsible career choice, but music kept bubbling up. I was writing a lot and playing a lot and started to not be satisfied just playing to my walls of my room.” After moving to Kansas City and discovering her mysterious Depression-era tenor banjo, Hunt began recording Even The Sparrow in Kansas City alongside collaborator Stas’ Heaney and engineer Kelly Werts. “It took almost two years to record,” she says, “learning how to let the songs dictate the production.” Having finally come to light, the album displays Hunt’s penchant for masterful storytelling and intriguing arrangement, as researched and complex as they are memorable, punctuated by her articulate melodies and a well-enunciated and creative command of lyrical delivery infused with deft emotional communication. While reminiscent of modern traditionalists such as Gillian Welch–a number of her songs even borrow titles and phrasing from traditional American music (“Back to Dixie,” “Gloryland”)–Even The Sparrow reveals an ineffable quality that hovers beyond the constraints of genre, à la Anais Mitchell and Patty Griffin. In “The Men of Blue & Grey,” what begins as a Reconstruction-era ballad about the repurposing of Civil War glass plate negatives in a greenhouse roof soon becomes a meditation on the hope that growth and life may one day be able to emerge from the ruins of suffering and haunting of violence. “Across The Great Divide” turns an otherwise traditional accounting of spurned love into a philosophical epic of the ethics of forgiveness and freedom, evoking the ideas of Søren Kierkegaard and Walt Whitman.]

A few weeks ago, Dick Von Dyke performed at Des Moines Pride and when he got back to his hotel, his Jeep had been broken into. He admittedly left a lot in my car. But the perps stole *so much* of his stuff including drag accessories, his class ring, all his tips from the weekend, and his laptop. By stealing it he lost every mix he’d ever made for drag. And his ability to make new ones. Drag is his livelihood and to have all of those accessories and mixes stolen was a devastating blow to his career…but he keeps telling himself they must’ve needed it more than he did.

So to try and make the best of a bad situation, on June 28th he is having a benefit show entitled “Night of a Thousand Dicks.” These lovely entertainers who don’t typically perform as kings have volunteered to do so for one night in order to try and help him get back on my feet.

[29 year old Stacy Busch is Operations Manager for Owen/Cox Dance Group. Originally from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Stacy is a multimedia artist & performer. Her collaborative concert experiences are designed to be provocative and accessible to cultivate broader artistic interest and, reach under-served and/or misrepresented communities. Stacy is the founder and president of No Divide KC, an arts and social justice non-profit that creates artistic events for various social causes. Stacy’s work has been performed nationally as well as in France and Iceland. She recently partnered with Gilda’s Club KC, Owen/Cox Dance and Charlotte Street Foundation to compose and perform the music for “Collective: Our Stories of Cancer.” In 2018, her service with No Divide KC will include partnerships with the Kansas City Ballet School and the Johnson County Library. Stacy’s work has been performed at: the Kansas City Fringe Festival, Art in the Loop Kansas City, the experimental concert series ArtSounds, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and UMKC Composer’s Guild Concerts. She has partnered with the Kansas City Streetcar, the UMKC dance program, Charlotte Street Foundation and the electronic music non-profit KcEMA. In addition to Kansas City, Stacy’s work has been featured at the University of Colorado-Boulder, the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University. It has also been performed by ensembles including: Bent Frequency, the Beo String Quartet and the Zodiac Trio. She is a two-time ArtSounds Grant recipient, a UMKC Women’s Council Grant recipient and was a CITS Scholar at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Stacy received her Masters in Music in composition from the University of Missouri-KC and her Bachelors in Music in composition from Western Michigan University. Her teachers include Rome Prize winners Paul Rudy and James Mobberley as well as Pulitzer Prize winners Zhou Long and Chen Yi. Other influential teachers include Guggenheim Fellow Curtis Curtis-Smith, Christopher Biggs and Lisa Coons. Prior to studying music, Stacy studied print journalism at Boston University.] [This music was composed and original performed when Stacy Busch presented, Mass: Live Performance and Art Gallery, Saturday, February 9, at Musical Theater Heritage, in Crown Center, 1800 Central St, KCMO. Multimedia artist and performer Stacy Busch is collaborating with Australian experimental artist Jade Suine and choreographer/dancer Tianna Morton to create Mass, a new music concert and exhibition. The project is born out of Busch’s month long journey at the Listhus Artist Residency in Northern Iceland, in which she experienced silence, isolation and extreme natural landscapes, which allowed Busch to uncover a more honest connection with her artistic voice and connect it to her spiritual practice. The full live performance is an evening length concert of new music largely conceived during her time in Iceland. Suine is providing a series of visual pieces and Morton brings all new choreography to the live performance. This concert event transports viewers to an environment that is unlike any other: the harsh yet breathtaking northern Icelandic landscape, which is meant to stir an ancient connection to the divine within each person and to transport the viewer someplace otherworldly.]

Belle told Michelle Bacon at The Bridge that, “Many of the tunes had been written around five years prior, when Loux was just 15 or 16 and had only played them as a solo artist — with occasional accompaniment from her dad, guitarist John Loux, and keyboardist Charlie Hibberd. In 2017, she hired the two musicians and a couple other friends to track “Aligned,” dubbing the project Belle and the Vertigo Waves, in the hopes that she’d eventually assemble a live band. “Recording was a surreal and emotional experience. Playing the songs with a band was like seeing them come to life,” she said. “I knew there was no way I could be a solo artist anymore, because I fell in love with the [full band] sound so much.”

In honor of our 15th Anniversary we welcome to the airwaves live performances from: Calvin Arsenia, Betse Ellis, Jen Harris, Mikal Shapiro, Barry Lee and Maria Vasquez Boyd. Plus, Mark interviews Iris DeMent, Krystle Warren, Kasey Rausch, and Fran Stanton. We will also have musical premieres and special musical tracks brought to us by Brenton Cook, Jake Wells, Marion Merritt, Nico Gray, and Necia Gamby.

During the past 15 years, Wednesday MidDay Medley has welcomed over 2000 guests, and we have featured 15,000 songs from thousands of musical artists. We have made it our mission to mix musical genres, playing with themes, diversity, equality, and free speech. We seek to connect listeners with artists and venues and studios and community gathering places. Wednesday MidDay Medley has proudly endeavored to help tell the story of our growing Kansas City/Lawrence area music communities, “The Midcoast Sound,” as we like to call it.

[Originally released January 1, 1980, reissued on CD 1996 on M.I.L. Multimedia. Fela Anikulapo Kuti was born October 15, 1938 and died August 2, 1997 He was also professionally known as Fela Kuti, or Fela. He was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre and human rights activist. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa’s most “challenging and charismatic music performers. Fela Kuti was a political giant in Africa from the 1970s until his death. Kuti criticized the corruption of Nigerian government officials and the mistreatment of Nigerian citizens. He spoke of colonialism as the root of the socio-economic and political problems that plagued the African people. Corruption was one of the worst, if not the worst, political problem facing Africa in the 70s and Nigeria was among the most corrupt countries of the time. The Nigerian government was responsible for election rigging and coups that ultimately worsened poverty, economic inequality, unemployment, and political instability, which further promoted corruption and thuggery. Fela’s protest songs covered themes inspired by the realities of corruption and socio-economic inequality in Africa. Fela Kuti’s political statements could be heard throughout Africa. Kuti’s open vocalization of the violent & oppressive regime controlling Nigeria did not come without consequence. He was arrested on over 200 different occasions and spent time in jail, including his longest stint of 20 months after his arrest in 1984. On top of the jail time, the corrupt government would send soldiers to beat Kuti, his family and friends, and destroy wherever he lived and whatever instruments or recordings he had. In the 1970s, Kuti began to run outspoken political columns in the advertising space of daily and weekly newspapers such as The Daily Times and The Punch, bypassing editorial censorship in Nigeria’s predominantly state controlled media. Published throughout the 1970s and early 1980s under the title “Chief Priest Say”, these columns were extensions of Kuti’s famous Yabi Sessions—consciousness-raising word-sound rituals, with himself as chief priest, conducted at his Lagos nightclub. Organized around a militantly Afrocentric rendering of history and the essence of black beauty, “Chief Priest Say” focused on the role of cultural hegemony in the continuing subjugation of Africans. Kuti addressed a number of topics, from explosive denunciations of the Nigerian Government’s criminal behavior; Islam & Christianity’s exploitative nature, and evil multinational corporations; to deconstructions of Western medicine, Black Muslims, sex, pollution, and poverty. “Chief Priest Say” was cancelled, first by Daily Times then by Punch. Many have speculated that the papers’ editors were increasingly pressured to stop publication, including by violence.]

[5th release from Kevin Robert Morby born April 2, 1988. follow up to his 2017 release City Music. Kevin learned to play guitar when he was 10. In his teens he formed the band Creepy Aliens. 17-year-old Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs. He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and roommates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 and 2012. He began a solo career in 2013 releasing his debut album Harlem River. His 2nd album Still Life was released in 2014. His album Singing Saw was in WMM’s The 116 Best Recordings of 2016. His album City Music was in WMM’s The 118 Best Recordings of 2018]

[Lucy Rose was born June 20, 1989, She is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Her debut album, Like I Used To was released in 2012. Rose released her second album, Work It Out, in 2015 on Columbia Records. Her third album, Something’s Changing, was released in 2017 on Communion Records. Born in Camberley, Surrey, England. Rose’s musical origins began with her playing drums in her school orchestra; her songwriting started with her writing tunes on her family home’s piano. She is the youngest of three sisters. She later bought a guitar from a shop she passed on the way to school, taught herself and began writing material at around the age of sixteen. Rose never played her material for anyone until she left home after completing her A-levels. At eighteen, she moved to London; instead of taking her place at University College London to study geography, she began experimenting and performing with other musicians. It was at this time when she met Jack Steadman, the frontman of Bombay Bicycle Club. After becoming friends, Steadman asked if she would like to perform vocals on a song he had written and was recording. The acoustic album Flaws came out with Steadman on lead vocals, and Rose performing backing vocals, most notably on the title track “Flaws”, as well as others on the album. She also performs some backing vocal duties on Bombay Bicycle Club’s third album, A Different Kind of Fix, and features in their fourth, So Long, See You Tomorrow. Rose also performs some backing vocal duties on the track This Sullen Welsh Heart by the Manic Street Preachers on their album Rewind the Film. A fan of tea, Rose began selling her own blend named ‘Builder Grey’ (two part English Breakfast and one part Earl Grey) at her shows as a substitute for merchandise or CDs..]

[Weyes Blood is Natalie Mering, born June 11, 1988, in Santa Monica, CA and grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She has released 4 albums and an EP. Both her siblings and parents are musicians and music played an important part in her upbringing. Her older brother, Zak Mering, is also a noteworthy recording artist, producer and songwriter under the “Raw Thrills” alias. At the age of 15 Mering began using the moniker Wise Blood to write songs. She changed to Weyes Bluhd on several self released records before changing the spelling to Weyes Blood. She took the name from the Flannery O’Connor novel Wise Blood. At the same time, while working on her own material, she toured the underground music scene with bands Jackie-O Motherfucker and Nautical Almanac. In 2011 she released the album The Outside Room as Weyes Blood And The Dark Juices on Not Not Fun Records. Uncut magazine described the album as “the vibe is devotional and ethereal, but with an edge”, while Beatbots found it “an impressive and ambitious album”. Natalie released her second record in October 2014 called The Innocents, which was released through Mexican Summer. In 2016 she released the album Front Row Seat to Earth on Mexican Summer to great acclaim throughout the music industry, and has spent the past few years touring throughout Europe and the states.]

[The Brian Jonestown Massacre is the self-titled eighteenth studio album by American band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical project and band led by Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig!, and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behavior of Newcombe. The collective has released seventeen albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, thirteen EPs, sixteen singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The band name is a portmanteau of deceased Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the 1978 Jonestown Massacre.]

[Eddie Russ’s Fresh Out was independently released in Detroit in 1974 and has remained a collector’s item ever since. Russ was an important figure to emerge from the vibrant underground jazz scene that thrived in Detroit in the early 1970s, existing in the cultural and economic desolation of the city after the departure of Motown in the late 1960s. This scene included the musical collective Tribe (including members Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin, Harold McKinney and Doug Hammond) and Kenny Cox’s Strata Records. Eddie Russ’s Fresh Out was first released in 1974 on the independent Jazz Masters record label. As well as including the classic jazz dance cut The Lope Song, Eddie Russ’s Fresh Out featured the debut of the group The Mixed Bag who subsequently recorded for both Tribe and Strata Records. Eddie Russ released two further classic jazz funk albums in the late 1970s, See the Light and Take a Look at Yourself.]

12. Throbbing Gristle – “20 Jazz Funk Greats (Remastered)”

[3rd studio album by British industrial music group Throbbing Gristle, released in December 1, 1979 by the band’s label Industrial Records. It is known for its tongue-in-cheek title and artwork, and has been hailed as the band’s best work, with UK magazine Fact naming it the best album of the 1970s. 20 Jazz Funk Greats is the band’s first full studio album, as prior albums contained both live and studio recordings. The production is credited to “Sinclair/Brooks”. The album was recorded on a 16-track borrowed from Paul McCartney after Peter Christopherson had worked on artwork for McCartney. The album was produced using electronic musical instruments and effects units, primarily from Roland and Boss. Throbbing Gristle were an English music and visual arts group, officially formed in September 1975 in Kingston upon Hull by members Genesis P-Orridge (born Neil Megson), Cosey Fanni Tutti (born Christine Newby), Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and Chris Carter. They are widely regarded as pioneers of industrial music. Evolving from the experimental performance art group COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle made their public debut in October 1976 on COUM exhibition Prostitution, and, the following year, released their debut single, “United / Zyklon B Zombie”, Throbbing Gristle dissolved in 1981 due to interpersonal differences; the individual members went on to participate in other projects, such as Psychic TV, Coil and Chris & Cosey. The band was reformed in 2004, and released three more studio albums—TG Now (2004), Part Two, and The Third Mind Movements (2009)—before disbanding again after P-Orridge’s departure and Christopherson’s death in Autumn 2010; the band’s last studio project—a cover version of the 1970 Nico album Desertshore—was released in 2012 under the moniker X-TG.followed by an album, The Second Annual Report (1977).]

[Ibibio Sound Machine is an English electronic afro-funk band from London. Formed in 2013, the band currently consists of vocalist Eno Williams, guitarist Alfred Kari Bannerman, percussionist Anselmo Netto, drummer Jose Joyette, bassist John McKenzie, trombonist/keyboardist Tony Hayden, trumpeter/keyboardist Scott Baylis and saxophonist/keyboardist Max Grunhard. The band was formed in London 2010 by producers Max Grunhard, Leon Brichard, and Benji Bouton. The trio were interested in producing music fusing elements from 1980s afrobeat and 90s drum-and-bass. They approached singer Eno Williams to create vocals for the project. After the first sessions had been successfully finished, live musicians were added to create a full band. These included the Ghanaian guitarist Alfred Bannerman from the band KonKoma and Afro-rock band Osibisa, Brazilian percussionist Anselmo Netto, and multi-instrumentalists Tony Hayden and Scott Baylis. The band released their first single in January 2014 on Soundway, entitled Let’s Dance. Their self-titled debut album followed in March the same year. In 2016, the band signed to Merge Records to create their follow-up record. Their second album, Uyai, was released in 2017. Ibibio Sound Machine is a clash of African and electronic elements. The band claims their sound is inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West African funk and disco, modern post-punk, and electro. The name of the band itself finds influence from Eno Williams’ mother, whose native tongue was Ibibio. While Williams was born in London, she spent most of her childhood in Nigeria with the rest of her family. Her mother often recounted numerous folk and children’s stories from her own heritage and passed them on to her daughter. Williams took this inspiration and crafted lyrics from these sources and married them to modern themes.]

15. Coby and the Prisoners – “One Thru Ten”

[Coby Hartzler, Matt Garver, Nate Sustar, Joey Weaver, William Stansifer. Coby and the Prisoners began in 2012 during some downtime between projects for songwriter and founder Coby Hartzler. A collection of solo songs and ideas were recorded over a long weekend at a studio in Indianapolis. It was released quietly online in conjunction with a few shows around Ohio, but the project soon fizzled out and was left at that. // The next phase of the band began to slowly form sometime in 2015. A few new players came into the picture, adding their own flavors and styles. The sound started to take shape creating what could be considered the band’s second album, “Candy Queen”. The album hones in on Hartzler’s knack for pop hooks layered with sounds that can feel somewhat classic yet modern at the same time. Guitar licks and melodies that pay homage to classic rock or the Nashville country of old, yet never retreading over already worn down or recycled territories. // Having grown up in a fairly conservative, small town with religion starkly at the focus, Hartzler began to question what he was being fed. Similarly, small town America rejects the idea that a grown man can continue to pursue the art of music as something more than a teenage hobby. For Hartzler, music is a way of clawing back at some of these things. With this album, he begins to address these issues head on, as if you can see the layers slowly being peeled away. “Candy Queen” hovers somewhere around playful off the cuff lyrics and thoughts that can suddenly dip into deeper and darker territories without warning. Like a simple sunny drive on an early summer’s evening that can feel almost too perfect. When a moment is so good that you can’t help but be reminded of the fleetingness of it all. That it will end. All of these themes swirl throughout the center of his songs but come wrapped up in a colorful candy wrapper.]

17. Pala Zolo – “Up Nothern”

[Pala Zolo is the instrumental electronic project of Lawrence, KS musician Eric Davis. In Pala Zolo, Davis blends synthesizers and drum machines with live instruments to create his blend of cinematic pop music. He chose the name to pay homage to his Sicilian heritage by naming the project after a small Sicilian village he spent time in while studying abroad in Italy. Pala Zolo allows Davis the full freedom to experiment in ways that are a departure from his main gig as the keyboard player in buzzy up-and-coming rock band Hembree (Thirty Tigers, Oread Records). // The inspiration for Pala Zolo came from a chance meeting with fellow electronic musician, Tycho’s Scott Hansen. One day while working at The Granada Theater in Lawrence, Davis was given the job of being Hansen’s driver. For years Davis had been writing and recording his own demos and was completely unsure of what to do with them. After spending the entire day with Hansen and seeing him perform, Davis realized he could bring his incomplete ideas to life in his own unique way. Seeing an instrumental band perform such an emotionally charged set inspired Davis to finish his songs without traditional vocals and to begin creating his own sound in that genre. // Soon after, Davis set forth to finalize the recordings with his good friend and producer Joel Martin (Y god Y). The two of them spent countless hours experimenting with synthetic and acoustic textures to create perfect soundscapes to compliment Davis’ intricately arranged compositions. In 2018, Davis self-released singles House Plant & 40K, and continued to take Pala Zolo to another level by performing live with drummer Gerardo Rojas. The duo brings the songs to life with live synths, guitars and drums and has been resonating with audiences. // In the summer of 2019, Pala Zolo is releasing their debut EP on Kansas City label The Record Machine and looks to take Pala Zolo to new heights.]

from: Please Don’t Be Dead / Blackball Universe / June 15, 2018
[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

3. Rooftop Vigilantes – “Oracle Cop”
from: Let It Be / High Dive Records / July 22, 2016
[3rd full-length, from Lawrence, danger-pop, 4-piece, formed in 2008. Zach Campbell, Oscar Allen, Hannah Hyde & Seth Wiese released their debut record “Carrot Atlas” in 2009 have toured to non-stop since, and have “slept on every couch, floor, dirty mattress there is in the lower 48.” Twice this band has been signed to record labels that later went out of business. They have now been signed to High Dive Records. For this new album, most of the songs were recorded in the basement of band member Seth Wiese. They finished the album on tour, and some of the parts were done in NYC, as was the mixing.]

[Kansas City based Hip-Hop artist Sauce is back with his 3rd original release, “Summer Sauce.” It features Kendrick Lamar and Tech N9NE collaborator, Gee Watts, along with producer/rapper Duncan Burnett. Duncan Burnett produced all the songs except Childhood Crush, produced by M. Fasol. This concept EP sets the tone of love and greatness via future soul, live instruments, and summer vibes. Sauce’s earlier releases charted on Billboard, iTunes and Amazon Hip-Hop charts.]

On Sunday, May 20 early in the evening Eve Sheldon asked asked Facebook humans to request a song of her’s and she would record four of them on the couch and post them. She ended up recording 10 songs in an hour or so, and she write to Tim Finn that it “was a fun freakin snapshot of her singing life.” friends chose songs from Foolish Sad Robot, The Wilders, a Trouble In Mind rap. Eve wrote, that the recordings represent her “mellow vocal stylings of this century, and the VERY FIRST song she ever wrote.” (She was was14.) Eve Sheldon called out other singers to ‘get down with this…imagine some 90s cats layin’ down some of their old tunes…and new cats laying down new tunes. i wanna hear!” Eve called out: Mark Smeltzer, David Regnier, Lauren Krum, Betse Ellis, Howard Iceberg, J Ashley Miller…the list is endless…sing for us, y’all!]

Othmer’s new book “Adventure New Zealand: Beneath the Totaras.” A sequel to her first book “Wits, Whims and Whiskers: A California Pet Tale” – the new novel transports the creative troupe of animal artists overseas on a mission to save the kiwis!

Chris Haghirian has worked for The KC Star for 19 years and helped launch INK in April of 2008 where he puts together music promotions, and organizes music for Boulevardia, The Plaza Art Fair, and Wednesday “Winsday” home game concerts at Kauffman Stadium for the Kansas City Royals. Chris is the host, with Sarah Bradshaw, of Eight One Sixty, heard Tuesday nights at 6:00 pm, on 90.9 The Bridge.

[9th studio album by Spoon. Their first on Matador since their 1996 debut, Telephono. Also the first since 2002’s Kill the Moonlight to not feature multi-instrumentalist Eric Harvey, who left after their world tour in support of 2014’s They Want My Soul. Spoon was formed in 1993 in Austin, Texas by Britt Daniel on vocals & guitar, and Jim Eno on drums. The band is currently comprised of Daniel, Eno, Rob Pope on bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals; and Alex Fischel on keyboards & guitar. Critics have described the band’s musical style as indie rock, indie pop, art rock, and experimental rock. Spoon released their debut studio album, Telephono, in 1996. Their next full-length, A Series of Sneaks, was released in 1998 on Elektra Records. The band subsequently signed with Merge Records, where Spoon achieved greater commercial and critical prominence with the albums Girls Can Tell (2001), Kill the Moonlight (2002), Gimme Fiction (2005), Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007), Transference (2010), and They Want My Soul (2014).]

13. Greta Van Fleet – “Highway Tune”
from: From the Fires / Republic Recordings / November 10, 2017
[2nd EP by rock band Greta Van Fleet, formed in 2012 in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It is a double EP consisting of eight songs; four from their debut EP, Black Smoke Rising, and four new tracks. It consists of vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner. They were signed to Lava Records in March 2017 and a month later the band released their debut studio EP, Black Smoke Rising. Their debut single, “Highway Tune”, topped the Billboard US Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts in September 2017 for four weeks in a row. A second EP From the Fires, containing the four songs from Black Smoke Rising and four new songs, was released on November 10, 2017, alongside a second single, “Safari Song”. The band’s heavy rock sound is influenced by the work of Led Zeppelin and many other rock and blues acts, with lead vocalist Josh Kiszka having a voice that has been compared to Robert Plant’s “husky howl.”.]

14. Built To Spill – “The Plan”
from: Keep It Like A Secret / Warner Bros. / February 2, 1999
[Members include: Doug Martsch, Steve Gere, & Jason Albertini based in Boise, Idaho. The band has released 8 full-length albums. Guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as original members. In an interview with Spin, Martsch stated that he intended to change the band’s lineup for every album, himself as the only permanent member. After their first album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, was released in 1993, Netson & Youtz were replaced by Brett Nelson & Andy Capps for 1994’s There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. A compilation album called The Normal Years followed, which included recordings by both lineups. Built to Spill Caustic Resin, an EP that features Martsch with the members of Caustic Resin, was released in 1996. Between recording albums in 1995, the band gained exposure by playing the Lollapalooza tour. Also in 1995, the band collaborated on the song “Still Flat” for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered, produced by the Red Hot Organization. Martsch signed Built to Spill to Warner Bros. Records in 1995. The deal the band brokered with Warner Bros. allowed it to retain a large degree of creative control over future albums. Built to Spill produced its first major label release in 1997 with Perfect from Now On. By this time, the band consisted of Martsch, Nelson, Netson, and Scott Plouf. Perfect from Now On was met with critical success and caused Built to Spill to become one of the most recognizable indie rock bands. Before releasing another album, Martsch made Nelson and Plouf permanent members of the band. In 1999, the band released Keep It Like a Secret to continued critical success and for the first time, significant commercial success. Live was released in 2000, and the band’s 5th studio album, Ancient Melodies of the Future, was released in 2001. The band’s 8th album Untethered Moon was released on April 18, 2015. The album was recorded as a trio with Martsch, Albertini, and Gere and was co-produced by Martsch and frequent Built to Spill guest keyboardist Sam Coomes. On Sept. 14, 2017 Built to Spill announced on their Facebook page that they were moving on from Warner Brothers and taking over the management of builttospill.com.]

15. Nikki Lane – “Jackpot”
from: Highway Queen / New West Records / February 13, 2017
[Nikki Lane was born October 17, 1983, in Greenville, South Carolina, and dropped out of high school there. She then worked as a fashion designer for a time, before moving to Los Angeles in 2006 and later to New York City. After doing so, she broke up with a country musician, who left her to record an album in Alabama; this experience inspired her to begin writing country music songs. Lane, who now lives in Nashville, also owns and operates a clothing store called “High Class Hillbilly”. Nikki Lane is an American country music singer-songwriter and artist. She has released three albums: Walk of Shame, All or Nothin’, and Highway Queen. Highway Queen was recorded near Dallas, TX at The Echo Lab from February to June 2016 with Nikki’s boyfriend Jonathan Tyler, as well as the other members of her current touring band. Two music videos were released ahead of the album’s release; the title track, Highway Queen, in which Nikki and friends crush cars with a monster truck, and Jackpot, in which Nikki and Jonathan Tyler successfully try their luck in old Sin City, ultimately resulting in a Vegas chapel wedding..]

The members of Molly Picture Club are: Aniko Adany on vocals, synthesizers, keyboards, & the omnichord; Matthew Hayden on drums, & drum sequencing; and Michael Tipton on vocals, guitar, & bass. These are some of the hardest working musicians in Kansas City. Their self-titled, full-length, debut release, Molly Picture Club, was one of our Best Recordings of 2012. The band is back with a new EP “In My Own Time Machine.”

The blog talks about how the band went back to the blackboard, to assess what the next phase of Molly Picture Club was going to look like.

“We talked about Madonna. We talked about how some bands seem to stay the same and some continually evolve. We talked a lot, but everyone agreeing what direction we wanted to truly go was another thing. This isn’t really a negative thing and in fact, from what I hear, is pretty common in all relationships. So we played in a space for awhile that had no direction, no end goal, no purpose other than to jam.”

“We talked about adding a bass player, since our bass tracks were pre-recorded and pumped through Matt’s Mac top. To some degree, it was nice because there wasn’t an additional schedule in the mix (we are all pretty busy the way it is), and no 150 lb. bass amp to lug around. Outside of playing live, it was also convenient to just plug in at the studio and record a bass part and then pick up a guitar and start playing to it.”

“Not having a bassist also came with it’s limitations. We are basically unable to change the song format on a whim, or go on a tangent during live performances.”

“In a way, this EP is a testimony of MPC finding its borders with the set of tools we had been working with for the past three years. Things change inevitably and the transition between seasons is undefinable and often relieving, and I think that’s the place this album comes from. But as Andre 3000 once said, “Ya’ll don’t wanna listen to me, you just wanna dance.”

11. Efterklang – “Dreams Today”

[Copenhagen, Denmark, based indie rock band, formed in December 2000. The band has recorded four studio albums. Piramida is an abandoned mining town located deep within the Arctic Circle. In August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang’s 8 piece-live band met up on this island off the Danish coast. The objective was to shoot a film the same length as an album. The result was: EFTERKLANG: THE GHOST OF PIRAMIDA where the group goes on an audio treasure hunt in the empty buildings of the abandoned town, while the narrator, former Piramida citizen Alexander, takes us back to a bygone era, when Piramida flourished and the immigrant Russian miners and their families lived in a Soviet parallel society far from the brutal reality of their homeland. The film makes it’s KC debut at the Middle of The Map Film Festival.]

Chris Haghirian has worked for The KC Star for 13 years and helped launch INK in April of 2008. Chris works on the marketing side of INK and puts together all of the music promotions. Chris has been instrumental in the organization of The Middle of The Map Fest. In addition he has helped organize The MidCoast Takeover of SXSW Music Festival featuring KC and Lawrence area bands. Chris also is a regular co-host and contributor to The Mailbox, a weekly podcast radio show produced and hosted by Michael Byars that is available the the Midwest Music Foundation’s website: midwestmusicfound.org.

Nathan Ruesch is co-founder and manager of The Record Machine, an Independent KC based record label, founded in 2003. With Chris Haghirian, Nathan is the co-mastermind, of The Middle of The Map Festival. Nathan also DJs in clubs from time to time and like Chris is a Passionate lover of music.

“Greetings from Tim Buckley” follows the story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he learns to embrace all of his feelings toward the father who abandoned him – longing, anger, forgiveness, and love. Culminating a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.

12. Jeff Buckley – “Hallelujah”

[American singer-songwriter and guitarist. His biological father, Tim Buckley, was a singer-songwriter who released a series of highly acclaimed folk and jazz albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jeff Buckley said he only met his father once at the age of eight. After his father died of a drug overdose in 1975, he took on his father’s name Buckley and his real first name, which he found on his birth certificate. After a decade as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, Buckley made his public singing debut at a tribute concert for his father called “Greetings from Tim Buckley”. The event was held at St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn on April 26, 1991. Buckley rejected the idea of the concert as a springboard to his career. Buckley gained a following in the early 1990s for his live performances of Dylan and Cohen songs at venues in Manhattan’s East Village. After rebuffing much interest from record labels he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. Over the following two years, the band toured widely to promote the album. In 1997, Buckley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to resume work on the album, to be titled My Sweetheart the Drunk. While awaiting the arrival of his band from New York, he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim, fully clothed, in the Wolf River when he was caught in the wake of a passing boat. His body was found on June 4, 1997.]

The Boston Globe called Connie Dover “the finest folk ballad singer America has produced since Joan Baez.” An Emmy Award-winning producer and composer, she has released four critically acclaimed albums, and can be heard on many soundtracks and recordings of folk and world music. Her acclaimed vocal arrangements of Scottish, Irish and early American music have been featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, A Prairie Home Companion, and Thistle and Shamrock. Connie Dover released her first book of poetry, Winter Count, in 2010 and is a recipient of the Speakeasy Prize in Poetry as well as the Yellowstone and Teton Song Contest Grand Prize.

Bob Walkenhorst is best known for his recording and live performances with The Rainmakers. He has released 6 successful albums. Popular author, Stephen King twice quoted lyrics from Rainmakers songs in his best seller The Tommyknockers and again in his 1991 novel Gerald’s Game. The song “Let My People Go-Go” gave Walkenhorst and the Rainmakers their first Top-20 single on the British charts. Bob Walkenhorst is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, producer, host, organizer and painter. Always making it look so easy when he plays and sings for annual benefits for 90.1 FM and other community service organizations. Bob hosts a weekly live show every Wednesday Night at 7:00 pm at the record Bar, and The Rainmakers continue to sell out local venues like Knuckleheads when the reunite for special shows.

Radkey played several show for the SXSW Music Festival and were written about in the New York Times and the Atlantic.]

Claire talked about how one of the reasons she ended up being in so many bands, was because when she first moved to KC, three years ago, she wanted to make friends.

Claire grew up in a small farming town in Kansas. She went to High School in Topeka, went to college in Nashville. Claire lived in Nashville for 7 years before coming to KC.

Claire talked about how it would cost $2000.00 a night, for The Crowded Stage to happen in Nashville. Claire talked about the KC Music Scene, and the generous spirit of collaboration that exists between all of these musicians.

[Produced by Rodney Crowell. Chely Wright’s 7th album was released the same day Random House published her groundbreaking autobiography, Like Me. On the strength of her debut album in 1994, the Academy of Country Music named her Top New Female Vocalist in 1995. Her first Top 40 country hit came in 1997 with “Shut Up and Drive.” Two years later, her 4th album yielded her first #1 single, the title track, “Single White Female”. She has had more than 15 singles on the country charts, and has sold over 1,000,000 copies in the United States. In May 2010, Chely Wright became the first major country music performer to publicly come out as gay. She cited among her reasons for “coming out” a concern with bullying and hate crimes toward gays, particularly gay teenagers, and the damage to her life caused by “lying and hiding”.]

Char Daniels is Director of Operations for LIKEME Lighthouse, 3909 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, a project of the LIKEME Organization, a not-for-profit, 501 – C (3) charity founded by musician Chely Wright. The organization chose to open an LGBT Community Center in KC to provide a safe and welcoming place for the area LGBT community to meet and work together to promote equality. Char Daniels talked about Chely Wright’s song “Like Me” from her album “Lifted Off The Ground.”

Char talked about how she became involved in working with LikeMe Lighthouse.

Chely Wright grew up in the Kansas City area.

The LikeMe Lighthouse is located in the same building at 90.1 FM and provides a safe and welcoming space where LGBT individuals and their families, as well as straight allies, can come for education, resources and to build a cohesive LGBT community in the Midwest. The Lighthouse will provide educational and social events to bring all individuals into the Lighthouse, as well as an outreach program to make the Midwest aware of the needs of the LGBT community. The LIKEME Lighthouse will serve as a voice for the LGBT community in the Midwest.

Hours: Monday – Saturday 11AM to 7PM, Sunday Noon to 6PM

Lighthouse comes fully equipped with resources, staff, counselors and a sense of community and safety. Within the Lighthouse, the Community Center provides resources on such topics as the coming out process, gender identity, bullying and other issues the LGBT community faces.

Char and Mark discussed the Grand Opening Weekend of the LikeMe Lighthouse that included sold out events featuring a documentary premiere and a concert featuring Kristie Stremel, Jennifer Knapp, Tracy Ryerson, Stamie Karakasidis, Hal Sparks, Chely Wright, Alan Cumming, Jeff Parshley, Adam Bouska and Thomas Roberts who all came to Kansas City to support the LIKEME Lighthouse.

Char discussed the facilities of The LikeMe Lighthouse that include a Gallery, Library, a Cyber Center, Meeting rooms, a Welcome Center, with more to come.

The 5th annual Record Store Day will take place on Sat, April 21. Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the 3rd Saturday of April each year. Its purpose is to celebrate the art of music. The day brings together fans, artists, and nearly 1000 independently owned record stores in the United States, along with hundreds of independent record stores across the world.

Joining us to talk about Record Store day are : Nathan Reusch of The Record Machine, Jerad Tomasino & Ross Brown of Golden Sound Records, & Coleen Shaw-Voeks of Vinyl Renaissance. We’ll play new music from: Akkilles, La Guerre, The Empty Spaces, Spirit Is The Spirit, Fullbloods, Millions of Boys, Baseball Project, The Sexy Accident, and Kimbra.

Coleen Shaw-Voeks has been working in record stores for over 15 years. She was formerly the owner of Need More Discs with her husband, musician Erik Voeks. Needmore Discs operated for 6 years in Shawnee, Kansas for 6 years before closing in August of 2009. Coleen is currently the manager at Vinyl Renaissance on West 39th Street in Kansas City. Coleen is also a distance runner and a running coach and prefer to spend my free time running through the woods.

Record Store Day was created for places just like Vinyl Renaissance.

Coleen brought in new music that will be released for Record Store Day.

Ross Brown & Jerad Tomasino are two of the founders (w/ Mat Shoare) of Golden Sound Records. Ross grew up in West rural Olathe. Jerad Tomasino moved around a lot growing up but spent some of his high school years living in Omaha. Jerad and Ross talked about their new Golden Sound Records, 12″ vinyl split release with The Record Machine, It is called “Secret Handshakes” and includes 6 tracks featuring Golden Sound Records artists and 6 tracks featuring The Record Machine artists, all created especially for Record Store Day!

Jerad Tomasino & Ross Brown brought in new music from Ross’s band Fullbloods, for us to feature.
